TIM HUDSON
On the three-run cushion:
“It’s funny. Chipper told me you’re going to have three runs to work with tonight, try to make it last. He was right on. I need to ask him if we’re going to win the World Series this year. Get a little inside info.”
On being 130-2 with a lead of three runs or more:
“For any starter, when you can get a nice lead early in the game it makes your job a lot easier. You can be aggressive in the zone. That’s pretty much what I did. I located my sinker pretty well, was able to change speeds with my cutter and some breaking balls, just tried to keep those guys off balance. It was a fun night. BMac called a great game back there. There were some really nice double plays to get me out of some jams.”
On his potential of throwing a no-hitter:
“I don’t see me ever really coming close to a no-hitter just because I try to make those guys hit it and for the most part, every now and then they’re going to find holes.”
On if he did throw a no-hitter if his stuff could have been much better:
“Probably not. Not with my sinker. I probably could have had a better change-up or split tonight but my sinker was really good and my cutter was good at times.”
On the 11-pitch strikeout of Andres Torres to open the game:
“It would have been heartbreaking if I’d walked him to start the game off after making some good pitches and him fouling off some good ones. I was just trying to mix up four-seamer and two-seamers, change eye levels as much as I can. Just try to stay down in the zone, other than that.”
On Troy Glaus’ hit:
“It was a nice at-bat, didn’t do too much with it, just drove it up the middle. We get him going again man, we’re going to be on the right track. He carried us a long time earlier in the year. We’ve had some guys step up around him but hopefully this can be a confidence-builder for him and get things going again.”
BILLY WAGNER
On Hudson’s outing:
“To lose like we did last night, then you put your ace up on the hill. And he’s stepped up for us all year long. If he’s not getting some type of Cy Young, MVP-type consideration, I don’t know what they’re looking at. Without Tim Hudson on this team, we’d be in trouble. He’s come out and pitched as consistent as anybody. He may not have 16, 17 wins and most of that was because of me and somebody else blowing some games for him. But he’s totally up there with the top echelon with those guys. He’s just phenomenal.”
On Phillies’ closing in:
“We knew we’d go through a bad spell, we knew they’d go through a good spell. We played consistent; we just haven’t got the big hits. And that goes in spurts. We’ve still got two games (on them). We’ve got to continue to play the same way, consistent, and not worry about Philadelphia because (it’s going down to) the end of the season. Those last three games (Oct. 1-3 in Atlanta), it’s going to be what it’s all about. It’s going to be nip and tuck.”
CHIPPER JONES
On Hudson’s outing:
“He was in complete control, command, all night. From the getgo, he was getting ahead and guys played some great D behind him. Gonzo had a couple good turns of double plays after the first couple hits. He didn’t go over the minimum until the seventh inning. Picked a good time to have a dominant outing.”
On Glaus’ bases-loaded hit:
“The hit by Troy was huge. That was the whole game right there. We might still be playing if he doesn’t get that hit. He had a good approach. It’s really the first time in a couple weeks you see him go up the middle or the other way with some authority. Timing was great, they were giving him up the middle because he’s been rolling over a lot. And he got extended on a fastball middle away and drove it up the middle and won us the game.”
On going 3-for-7 with RISP (Just for fun, so you guys can hear him giving us a hard time):
“We got three knocks with guys in scoring position. How about that? I’m sitting there thinking how I’m going to MF you guys after the game.”
Still trying to come up with something, I ask?
“Yeah, I can’t G-rate it on that short a notice.”
BOBBY COX
On Hudson’s outing:
“That is as good as you’re going to see a pitcher pitch a ballgame. Just a lot of strikes, a lot of movement, a lot of groundballs. I guess (Pat) Burrell’s ball was hit pretty good but he was in control the entire night. We grow to expect that from him every outing.”
On Glaus’ hit:
“We had some big clutch hitting night. Glaus with a bullet up the middle and Rick Ankiel and Billy Wagner was lights out tonight. He was lights out last night really, gave up some groundballs….Big one for Troy, he hit the ball hard. It was a big lift. We need his bat.”
On Gonzalez’s double play:
“Gonzalez, I just love to watch him play short. He is a sensational shortstop. I don’t know who does that, what he’s doing.”

nice to see troy finally get a hit but two more double plays show that he hurts the braves lineup as much as he helps it. got to get him out of the middle of the order.

The two double plays were what we expect lately, but you have to hope that maybe some rest from not getting used as much and maybe a little confidence from having the winning RBIs will help Glaus get back on track.
We are only in first place because of the tear he went on at the plate (not counting all the things that have been consistent all year like a really great pitching staff) and if he can get hot again with Ankiel’s added pop, they might make it interesting down the stretch. We haven’t been blown out in games during this second half slump as the pitching has remained as good or better than the first half, we just haven’t had the clutch hits.
Just going off my gut, but I don’t see the braves building a big lead again. If they do somehow hold on with this offense because of their pitching, it should be pretty close down to the end. Should make for an exciting and dramatic finish to the year.
Strangely, I think we have a better chance of going deep in the playoffs if we get there than I do of us getting there. I would put our best 3 starters against any other best 3 out there (yes even the Phillies).
I’d be interested if any one were to look this up, but I’m pretty sure we have a winning record against every playoff contender (those in first or close behind) so far.

Oh and Brandon MLB 10 The Show is eerily accurate at times. For example, I picked up the game on the day it came out and started a season. In the season opener against the Cubs, I homered with Jason Heyward in his first at-bat and also homered with Brian McCann, with Marlon Byrd homering for the Cubbies. Now fast forward to the real opening day on April 5th. J-Hey homered in his first at-bat, McCann homered and for the Cubs Marlon Byrd homered. I was pretty freaked out, in all honesty.

JMAYNE: Given the choice, I’d take Hudson and Hanson. But yeah, this rotation is really something, huh? I’m just hoping Minor gets into the swing of things quickly, cause we really need four out of five guys being lights out with the way we’ve going on offense lately…
As for Freeman, I don’t think he’s ready. All the scouting reports say his plate discipline is still lacking. So he could come up and ambush the league and start very hot like Francoeur did (although that could well wreck his development down the road–worth considering), or he might come up and strike out 3 times a night. I know it seems like we can’t get any worse than Troy right now, but Troy at least has the major league track record to make you somewhat more confident he will shake this slump off, as he shook off the ice-cold start to the season. Freeman doesn’t have the track record, and he has a big problem with his approach which we don’t have the luxury of working through at the major-league level. So long as Troy stays healthy, I think Freeman should stay in Gwinnnett.

Reid- Wagner didn’t blow it. His defense did. After he plunked Huff, he got what should have been 5 outs in a row. How can you say Wagner blew it? A lot of clowns on here were calling for Wags to lose his closer job, thinking he just doesn’t have “it” anymore. He struck out th side on 10 pitches. Where are his critics?

Where are all the haters that were clamoring for the Braves to keep Vasquez and dump Hudson last year, and if you recall I told them to check up later in the season and
that Lowe’s statistics would be equal to or greater than JV’s. However, some clutch hitting is vastly needed.

DOB — show this to Bobby Cox.
From Bill Madden in the NYDN: Thursday night in Miami, the Florida Marlins had a walk-off victory over the Phillies taken away from them when third-base umpire Bob Davidson egregiously blew the call on Gaby Sanchez’s would-be tie-breaking base hit down the third-base line. Davidson called the ball foul despite all the replays showing it in fair territory before and after going over the bag. Despite that, Davidson, characteristically, refused to ask for help. But then, what else to expect from the worst umpire in baseball, an umpire who historically has been involved in terrible calls – and subsequent ugly confrontations with players and managers alike. This was an umpire who was fired by then-NL president Leonard Coleman years ago for general incompetence yet somehow allowed back into the fold by the MLB poobahs. It wasn’t like he got any better in exile either. Last month, Bud Selig got rid of Jimmie Lee Solomon, the VP of administration in charge of the umpires, and replaced him with Frank Robinson. Selig did so because he is tired of being embarrassed by all the bad umpiring. To this, however, he needs to be asked two questions: How much more embarrassing do you need, and why is Bob Davidson still working in the majors?

Preston, it ain’t just Davidson, is it? Angel Hernandez, CB Bucknor, Joe West. They all have made some really, really bad calls this year, both on the strike zone and in the field. Just awful. Friday night, Bucknor’s strike zone? I’m not sure he had one. I think he was just calling them as he wanted to. It was just ugly.
Glad the Braves came back last night and said screw that! I sure hope D-Lowe can keep de game in hand today and shut out the Giants. Make ‘em waste what they had to pay to the ump crew to win Friday night’s game.

There are more than 4 bad umpires, that should be subject to performance review, and probably be dismissed from MLB service. Hernandez, West, and Davidson are the most recognizable ones of the bunch. Those three would be very good candidates to start the process with.

Glaus needs to try chiropractic treatment. I used to have bad knee and joint pain. I’ve been seeing a chiroprator for about 2 1/2 years, getting adjustments about once a week. I turned 50 a year ago and feel better overall than I did in my 30’s.

August 8th, 2010

I really like the idea of leaving Infante at 2nd when Prado comes back and sticking Prado over at first. I think they should try this out for a few weeks. It’ll allow Prado to rest his hand as he won’t have to throw as much, it’ll allow Glaus to rest his knees and it’ll keep Omar’s hot bat in the lineup. Realize I’m not saying this should be the lineup for the rest of the year but why not for a few weeks? Glaus obviously needs some rest and I think it not throwing really could help Prado’s hand and the Braves defense. Also I think that the lineup should look like this during this span:
1. Infante
2. Prado
3. Chipper
4. BMac
5. Heyward
6. Hinske/Diaz
7. A Gonz
8. Ankiel
I really think this could be a good lineup.

obviously a lefty today for the giants. Not one lefthand hitter in the lineup today unless I’m mistaken about Ankiel being a lefty and not a switch hitter.

The only “easy” out in the lineup is Glaus, and even he proved to he’s good for a hit once every 10 ABs or so….so he’ll likely go 0-for-today.
Infante’s good for a hit and/or walk, the key, for me is Melky. Melky’s done well since a slow start, so it’s a “capable” lineup, with their collective potential. I just know with Lowe starting we have to score runs to have a chance.

No Heyward, Chipper, or Mac in today’s lineup? Cox does realize that we are trying to hold off the Phillies right?
The Phillies are doing what they are doing without Howard, imagine what that team will do once Howard is back? So right now the Braves have to try and take advantage of the Phillies weakness and by not playing 3 of your best players in the same game doesn’t exactly make much sense does it? I understand giving guys a day off, but the game today will be the difference between winning the series 3-1 over a very good Giants team, or splitting the series. With how the Phillies have gained ground in the division, the Braves need all of their best hitters in the lineup today.

Omar needs to stay in the lineup for sure, but we need some pop at first base. Platoon Glaus and Hinske, put Omar in Center against lefties, and move him between short and left against lefties. Gonzo needs some time off as well.
CB Bucknor without a doubt is the worst umpire in Baseball, with Angel Hernandez following close. Hohn, West, and Davidson need to go but they are far behind Bucknor and Hernandez, both of whom shouldn’t be allowed to call a Little League game.
