Braves’ quotes after Sunday’s loss

BOBBY COX

“Tommy’s really throwing the ball well. He almost dominated today, I thought. The little blooper to right field [triple after Heyward's diving catch attempt] and a guy that never makes an error, Gonzo. Those were the two runs.

“He couldn’t have pitched better. We just left way too many guys on base. They gave us opportunities with bases on balls, and we just couldn’t take advantage of it.”

Hasn’t that been the big problem lately?

“A little bit. It happens. You’re going to leave some on.”

“We’ve had a lot of opportunities. We get guys on. Our guys are doing a good job of getting on, working the strike zone and all that. But we need to pick it up a little bit with our hitting.”

On the big crowds, playoff atmosphere

“We had big crowds. It was fun to play here. I’m proud of what they [Reds] have done; I mean, brought the city back to life here.

“They were all great ballgames. We were in all three. Could have won all three, could have lost all three.”

On Jason Heyward’s hustle double on hit to shallow right-center in ninth

“That was a great play. I could see it coming. I knew when he left that batter’s box he was headed to second.”

First impression of Ankiel

“Real good. He’s a great outfielder and he hit two balls right on the button today, one to short and one to Votto at first base. I thought he had a good day.”

TOMMY HANSON

“I felt good, even warming up. All my pitches felt really good. It just didn’t work out for us today.”

“I felt good with all my pitches. I was commanding my fastball and both my breaking pitches, and mixed in a couple of changeups, too. So at any point I felt like I could throw any pitch I needed to, or wanted to.

“I still felt good through the last out.”

On bouncing back from his recent rough stretch

“I think in that rough patch I learned more than anything I have since I’ve been up here. I learned the most in that time. Hopefully now that I’ve switched over to the other side [of the pitching rubber], the first base side, it feels really good. Even my side sessions, it feels really good. All my pitches feel great from that side. So hopefully just keep moving forward.

“You’re always going to have to make adjustments. I’m glad that adjustment has worked out for the better.”

On dealing with a game like this

“It’s always tough losing. You want to go out there and win the game. But I felt like I went out there and did my best, gave us a chance to win. It just didn’t work today. They’re a really good team. They swing the bats well, and they pitched well today. One of those days, there’s not much you can do about it. We just have to, from a team standpoint, just keep our head up and keep moving forward. We’ve got a game tomomrrow. Got to keep going.”

JASON HEYWARD

On stretching ninth-inning hit to a double, when did decide to go?

“I attempt to, right out of the box, think that every time and make them stop me. And once I saw how long that ball was rolling, I said let’s get on second. A base hit away from tying it up.”

On the road trip

“If you look back on the trip, I think yesterday was our biggest loss. We lost another 3-run game in Washington, but other than that there were some one-run games we played real close. We had an opportunity [Saturday] to extend that lead while we had them 2-nothing, but we just didn’t come through there.

“Good teams find a way to win, especially in their home parks.”

On the diving catch attempt

“I mean, you’ve got to lay out. You can’t leave any question. That’s the only I’ll know if I could catch it, is if I dive. I don’t want to be standing up there with two outs. I want to lay out for my team and the pitcher.”

ERIC HINSKE

On the 3-6 trip

“If you look back I’m sure we didn’t hit well with runners in scoring position. All you can do is keep swinging. We faced some good arms, give the pitchers credit from time to time.”

“If we’d have scored more runs we’d have won more games. Basically we didn’t hit with runners in scoring position. We’ve got to do a better job with that.”

On Tommy Hanson

“His last two starts he’s been unbelievable. In the one inning Jason tries to make an unbelievable catch, and 99.9 percent of the time Gonzo makes that play. And that’s the game. It’s nobody’s fault. Just one of those games today. We’ve just got to put it behind us.

“We’re going home now. It feels like we’ve been on the road for two months now. I don’t know why, but it has. I think that deadline was kind of weighing in on everybody. It just seemed like a long road trip. So get that over with, and now we’ll put this behind us and roll.”

This road trip was another example of why this team will not make it to post season. They do not hit on the road.

TP is the hitting coach. One of his main duties is to help guys avoid long slumps. In this regard TP himself is in a long slump.

BC needs to change the batting order for the balance of the season. Jay Hey should not be batting second. He should be hitting third. McCann should be hitting fourth.

Drop CJ and TG to fifth and sixth.

Bobby Cox may very well be the single most overrated manager in MLB history.

All the runners left on base and he couldn’t manage the team to a run or two! BUNT, HIT & RUN, STEAL, SOMETHING BOBBY, SOMETHING!

Pathetic! He just sits on his hands and keeps stealing money from the Braves.

Braves will be in 3rd place a week from Monday with this mediocre offense. What ever happened to the big bat Frank Wren promised?! What a load of crap. What is the point of not trading any good players on ur farm team to beef up your MLB team. We do this every year. Padres got two bats to beef up their lineups, hell even the yankees beefed up their already potent lineup. So what do we do, we go get Rick Ankiel, haha. Watchout NL pitchers, Braves got a potent lineup now. What a waste of a baseball team.

When are we going to bring up Freddie Freeman? Enough is enough. The Mets brought up Ike Davis and he is killing it. Why do we have to keep playing the grandpa’s, and making trades for older players. This team is so cheap. They have an awesome farm team, and it will always stay like that. They don’t trade them, yet they don’t bring them up. What is the point in that? Every playoff bound team increased their chances substantially, and we pretty much broke even. We are in first place, so we needed to have a trade that would keep us their. I think the last big trade for the Braves was Fred McGriff. Sad, so sad. (yes i know big tex, but he was here about 6 months before we sold one of the best firstbasemen in the league to the yanks)

If you can’t hit and you don’t field, what chance do you really have?
Tommy Hanson pitched well enough to win, but got screwed by two bad plays behind him (back to back, at that) that allowed both runs to score. The first was going to score anyway, but the second NEVER should have happened. At least they didn’t yuck it up in the outfield the way they did after Cabrera’s error yesterday that was SO Little League. JJ was remarkably forgiving in his comments.
This team is pitching well, but not playing worth a crap.

Braves problem is they will always pay rediculous amounts of money to potential pitchers, but never to proven bats. This is why they will never make the World Series again. Once Jayson Heywards new contract comes up, dont expect him to be a Brave. We would rather give up 7 million dollars a year to a pitcher like Kawakami, or 15 million to Derek Lowe(r ya kidding) than to a great young talent like Heyward.

And why was that, Mike? You mean… it didn’t work? Oh yeah.

A deadline trade is not a guarantee of anything. Trade deadlines are on thing in a long list of make and break factors in a team’s year. Hot streaks, cold streaks, injuries, players stepping up, players stepping down, the season other teams in your division are having, barnyard luck, and last but not least: the outcome of the games played on the field.

The Braves can win the division. They can lose it, too. Just watch the games, yo.

something is up when so many players get left on.

most of the team did a great job working the count today, but none of them seemed to be able to dial in on “hittable” pitches. most of the pitches over the plate got taken for strikes.

the point of patience at the plate is to wait for the “right” pitch. when that pitch comes along you HAVE to be able to get a bat on it and at LEAST get it into play. 4 hits today and 10 men left on?

the braves don’t have a line-up that is going to blow people away, but if the braves are going to build a team around pitching (great pitching this series, btw. even JJ did a fine job considering his line at the end of the game) we need to at least have the talent to drive in some runs.

i’m currently living in the cincinnati area, and i got to enjoy the reds broadcast of the game today. the thing the reds announcers kept talking about was how the braves’ numbers just didn’t “look” like a 1st place team. i couldn’t help but notice how right they were.

great pitching, no one will argue with that. but we need some heat in those bats. even if the braves can hold off the phills and take the division (i think they can), they won’t be serious contenders until they can get those bats going…whether it be with the guys they have, or by bringing up some more young talent (freeman at first?).

Unfortunately i have been watching. I have watched this offense slimmer down to 1 and 2 rungames with 3 to 5 hits and leaving an average of 10RISP per game. They left 33 against the Reds! Cant win ballgames like that. Im just saying dont expect Rick Ankiel to be the savior. Maybe this team should fire TP, hell look what it did with the Phillies. They went from 7 back to now 2.5. Something is wrong, hel McClouth goes to AAA Gwinnet and already had hit two HRs. Escobar moves to Toronto and has hit two HRs and is batting over 470!! Gonzo comes here and has gone in a slump of 0-18 before finally hitting his first HR for the braves today. You tell me what is wrong with that picture??!!??

You actually asked why the Braves keep trading for older players? Because the teams trading for younger players are the teams out of the playoff race.
You also said that we traded one of the best 1st basemen to the Yanks when referring to Mark Tex. Do you want to check on that one again, genius?

“You tell me what is wrong with that picture??!!??”

My crackpot theory about baseball trends is this: They start out for any number of reasons, but they continue on their own steam because once a trend is going, it tends to keep going. Mostly because baseball is so mental, and because hitting in particular is so rhythm-and-confidence based.

So teams that start the year, or at some point develop the trend of such things as: winning at home, or winning on the road, or hitting with runners in scoring postion, or failing with runners in scoring position, or winning late in games, or losing late in games, or even – the grandaddy of them all for Atlanta Braves fans – losing in the playoffs. And once there’s a trend, it’s hard to stop. And the longer it goes, the harder it is to stop.

I honestly believe that a great majority of these kinds of trends, while they do form sometimes for real reasons based on strong or weak players on the team, form lives of their own very independent of the product on the field.

Something comes along and breaks the streak – for good or for bad – and swings the momentum over to a new trend, and the new one becomes just as hard to break as the old one. Sometimes it takes half a season to get something reversed, or a whole season, etc. Consider the worst-to-first stories in baseball. You think the small percentage of personnel changes on your typical worst-to-first baseball team can account for those huge differences in winning percentages? The ‘91 Braves, the ‘91 Twins, the ‘08 Rays, the ‘10 Padres… and many more. The engine that drives those stories is as much momentum, rhythm, and confidence as anything else.

At least, I will say, I think a lot of baseball comes down to that. Certainly not all. More of it than most would admit who think the solutions are so obvious – replace this or that player or coach.

Confidence, rhythm, momentum = a great deal of winning and losing baseball. And confidence, rhtyhm, and momentum are often formed by arbitrary events.

Disclaimer: I do believe that great pitching is less susceptible to this law than great hitting. So that a team with truly good pitching has a much greater chance of developing good trends than otherwise.

End of crackpot theory.

We need to lay the blame where it belongs, the owners. Wren can’t come up with a great hitter on the money he has to spend and the owners control the money. What was this crap about the Braves having 94M to field a team in 2010? Right now it’s 84M available. What happened to the other 10M?

bigstack19

August 1st, 2010
6:30 pm

The team missed out on getting a bat before the deadline and now they are stuck in the mud. They can’t manufacture runs because they have zero speed so they are a station to station team. They wait for the big homer but they have no power so it doesn’t come and that leads to all the runners left on base. The last homer I remember Glaus hitting was against Kansas City yet Bobby Cox continues to bat him 5th. Chipper has struggled all season and most of last but he is glued into the 3rd spot when he should be hitting 7th. Heyward who is the only Brave with the threat of speed or power hits second when he should be hitting 3rd or 4th. They traded the only threat of speed on the team for a platoon outfielder. Now the best hitter, Prado is hurt and will miss two weeks or so. Maybe they can get a bat in August but I doubt it. We won’t see Freddie Freeman this year at least until September. I feel like this team doesn’t have enough offense to make the playoffs right now and will be out of first before the 15th and struggling to hold onto the wild card by the end of the month.

I have been a Braves fan since they used to get their ass beat by the Expos. I have followed this team from worst to first, then back down again. I said Big Tex is one of the best, not the best. He sure is hell better than Troy Glaus. Problem is Braves never want to spend money on a bat, just “potential” pitchersw. Now we are stuck with 7 million a year with KK and 15 million a year with Lowe. Why not trade Lowe? We could have kept Vasquez and traded Lowe at the beginning of the year and made more money for a stronger bat. Troy Glaus was Franks Big Bat. He did good for a while but he is old, and it shows everytime he runs. When I say old players, Trust me I amrooting for them, but they need more help from the front office, or we all will be watching the Phillies playing in October, wondering what could have been.

Forget the Phillies….they are a cinch to jump ahead of the Braves if they don’t get it together soon…better start looking out for the Florida Marlins…who have aims on catching the Braves and the Phillies…and have a better manager (he recently outmanaged Bobby Cox without having his best starters facing the Braves and a had a worn out bullpen to boot for the series…still outmanaged Cox). I repeat…Bobby Cox is one of the worst strategic, game-day managers of ALL TIME. Great in the clubhouse and in the dugout…but gets beat almost every time when important moves are made by each manager. Freeman….by the way…is better than Glaus or Hinske right now…and Hinske is a better player when he is coming of the bench and not playing every day. Bring up Freeman…and at worst….alternate him Glaus against left handed pitching (Freeman would play most of the time facign righties…and use Hinske off the bench where he is better. But….bringing up Freeman now would mean they would have to pay him more sooner….and forget about putting winning ahead of money for the current Braves ownership.

Speaking of out managing. The one guy Cox has consistently out managed over the years is Baker. Today you had to question Cox’ use of Chipper and Diaz. Against a lefty (who could not be pulled) he uses Chipper against him of the lefty killer Diaz. Then Chipper’s left handed swing is unavailable against a righty in the ninth – although Diaz had maybe his best at bat of the year and Cox likely figured that Baker would not use an overused closer three days in a row – the reason the Reds will fall short as have the Cubs and Giants when Baker managed there.

We got Ankiel to play center…not to move Hayward over there…but I agree, sit Melky down. It’ll at least give you another switch hitter on the bench. The guy shows flashes of being able to get things done, but for the most part he goofs off. If he ‘jogs’ out one more ground ball I think I would want to…well, something harsh. And that business of laughing at the ’shank’ throw he pulled yesterday. I pretty much hated the Faux announcers – especially the frosted-haired one (I forget his name and don’t really care) that couldn’t seem to shut his mouth – but he was right in his observation about the cavalier way Melky treated that embarrassing play. We probably would have lost anyway, but that was ‘bush’.

We’re only 2 and 1/2 in front now – even without Utley, and now Howard, those guys come up with ways to win – not us.

Glaus has to sit for a least a series or two and if he can’t produce by mid August he must be benched. The Phillies in my opinion are a flawed team, as are the Braves of course, but this division is Atlanta’s for the taking and they should win it by at leat five games. In the end the pitching will be the difference, especially the bullpen. Lidge is their closer? That’s a joke. Keep the faith people.

Jt..I think we are agreeing with each other..I think Torre and Larussa are highly overrated…Torre had any player he wanted or needed to have…didn’t have to manage much..Larussa’s teams were so juiced in the 80’s then he gets handed the best player in baseball

Am I the only one that wishes people would stop suggesting changing the lineup? If you actually do some research you will find that the order of the lineup makes little or no difference. The only fact that can be shown is the number of at-bats per season varies with each spot. Results are far too random to say that one order is better than another, so your lineup changes mean close to nothing.

When did the Phillies who beat up on Arizona then just lost 2 out of 3 from The Nats just like us..Become such a threat..if they aren’t up 5 runs in the 9th they blow it..even five isn’t ebough sometimes…Is Lidge and the rest of thier starting pitching gonna get better all of the sudden..it’s been 2 years of mediocre pitching

I’m so tired of watching the same stuff everyday. They can never string hits together and bobby has the lineup all screwed up for example today. Puttin conrad in leadoff when yesterday infante went 3 for 5 in leadoff spot. And everybody needs to get off frank wrens back. There wasn’t many big bat outfeilders available. Ankiel had a good game today just hit balls right at people. But as far as seeing tehe same bull crap everyday anytime braves have runners on base its almost a guaranteed double play or strike out. Everybody is tryin to hit it out of the park and not 1 of them really have the power to do that with the exception of mccann and heyward we better do something soon or were gonna choke before we get a chance to choke in the playoff

The thing that gets me is the few times that ATL had a chance to drive in runs… McCann and JHey swung at horrible pitches to end threats. For all the patience and pitch taking, it doesn’t mean a thing if you swing at bad pitches. Braves are in a rough patch. Bound to happen with all the series winning they had been doing. Get ready for the next series.

As bad as it sounds, getting a few hits and waiting around for the three run home run is the best way to go unless you are playing for one run in the late innings. I forget where I read it, I assume Moneyball or maybe a J.C. Bradbury book, but about half of all major league games have the winning team scoring more runs in one inning than the losing team scores in the entire game, making small ball inefficient. Also, you guys contradict yourselves saying the Braves need a big bat and then saying they need to play small ball. The big bat does not help you play small ball, it helps you hit the three-run home run.

Seven walks, none scored.

No bunt attempts, no hit-and-run plays, no steals.

Chipper gets the lefty, so Matty gets the righty.

It’s on Bobby.

To back up my post with today’s scores and excluding the SF/LA game, 8 of the 14 games played had the winning team score more runs in one inning than the losing team scored in the game.

These crybabies make me sick. We are in 1st place in August people! This is something we haven’t experienced in 5 years. I, for one, am excited. I think we have what it takes to hold off the Phoolies.

Yes, we had a rough roadtrip. Big deal. We play immensely better at home.

Yes, we have to face some tough pitchers this week. Big deal. We’ve beat great pitchers before.

Yes, we needed a big stick at the deadline. Big deal. Ankeil is an upgrade over what we had.

Yes, our shythead owners shorted us on the payroll this year. Big deal. Wren and Cox managed to put together a competitive team that resides in 1st place.

Florida won the Series with a $40M payroll. We can do it with an $84M payroll…as long as Lowe doesn’t get a playoff start.

It’s simple. The Braves ARE DONE. They will hang for another week or so and then the big slide takes them under. The Phillies will dominate the remainder of the year and when they get Chase back, they will run off and hide. The Braves DO NOT HAVE THE HITTING TO REMAIN IN THE RACE!!!!!!!!!!!! Ohhhhhhhhhhhh, they got a pitcher who cannot handle the pressure, see Braves, Tigers and Yankees. Yup, he did great for the lousy KC Royals. Big deal. And, a lifetime hitter of about .235, with some power but strikes out every other time at bat. Ooooohhhhhhhh, such BIG gains at the trade deadline. Nope, the Braves won the division for 14 years in a row. Now they are going to miss the playoffs for the 5th straight year and probably equal that 14 times in a row, but going the other direction. The Braves ARE DONE!!! School starts next week, NFL in camp, college football coming in less than a month or so. GOOD BYE Braves, we are off too America’s TRUE GAME, FOOTBALL!!! Losers.

Yo, Willie G. Get a grip dude. Arthur Blank does not want to own the sorry Braves. He knows a black hole when he sees one. He ain’t gonna throw that Homer Depot money down that black hole of the Braves. No way, no how. How do you think the guy got rich? Certainly NOT by making stupid business decisions like buying the lousy losing Atlanta Nothing Braves!!!

When you draft pitchers 75% of the time at the top of the draft, you end up with few hitters. They waited until Chipper was almost done and just drafted a few 3B this year. These guys will take 2-3 yrs of course. Meanwhile, the offense will continue to sputter.
Kearns went to the Yanks for a player to be named and Ludwick was also available for a reasonable price. Why didn’t the Braves get either when they need a right handed hitter ?
The wild card is our only chance and that isn’t too good either.
