Braves Acquire Ankiel, Farnsworth
By Tim Dierkes [July 31 at 3:10pm CST]
The Braves acquired Rick Ankiel and Kyle Farnsworth from the Royals, reports CBS’ Danny Knobler. The Braves are sending Jesse Chavez, Gregor Blanco, and Tim Collins to Kansas City, tweets Ed Price of AOL FanHouse.
Rick Ankiel and Farnsworth!
ankiel and farnsorth is done. just received approval from MLB.
Farnsworth has been good this season and you are not asking him to close. He would be a spot reliever. Pretty good for that role.
at least we got rid of chokevez
Yhaoo twitter report Braves get Ankiel and Farnsworth for Chavez, Blanco and Collins.
Farnsworth and Ankiel to #Braves confirmed. #Royals get Blanco, Chavez, Collins. #MLB
Chavez is gone!!!!!
who is Collins?
July 31st, 20104:16 pm
Wilkin Ramirez for ptbnl.
blanco, collins , chavez.
Love Ankiel but damn I hate giving up Collins
July 31st, 20104:17 pm
I hate Gregor is leaving but I’m glas that Chavez is.
July 31st, 20104:18 pm
Bye Bye Chavez !!!!!!!!
rolling in montana
In told you all and hour ago that the braves were working with royals and dodgers just found out dodgers wanted 4 players for kemp.
what are all you blanco lovers going to do now????? thought he should be the starting CF
July 31st, 20104:19 pm
Braves have acquired Rick Ankiel and Kyle Farnsworth for Gregor Blanco, Jessie Chevez, and another minor leaguer.
what did the ol scrub say?
whats the story on Ramirez?
Farnsworth and Ankiel for Homerun Chavez, Blanco and minor leaguer Collins. WOW! what a pend
way to go FW
J-man???? Having a bad day???? Wow, you have been pretty much wrong all day. Shameful.
July 31st, 20104:20 pm
I like this move you hate giving up prospects but you have to stay ahead of the Phillie’s .
I do hate losing Blanco.
Well, if Farneworth can keep his head on straight this time it’s not that bad. Ankiel has’nt showed much this year but he is a power threat. Blanco was no power threat. The plus is that we got rid of Jessie Chavez.
Good deal for both teams Blanco will start, good for him and Farnsworth 2.42 era 36k’s in 42 inning 2-0 record. Welcome home big boy.
Ankiel always been a Bobby and Wren favorite. Now lets play.
July 31st, 20104:21 pm
IF and I mean IF Ankiel stays healty, great pick up for bravos, hate if for blanco….but I think Ankile will help us
all that talk about how awesome collins was when we traded esco….and now he flip him…..scouts in minors must have seen something they didn’t like
Well I don’t find much wrong with that deal.
we gave up an awful reliever in Chavez, a career defensive backup cf, and a promising small lefthand reliever. Really hard to complain with that.
i take back what i said about the braves screwing this up
All the whiners can stop crying about no trades by Wren.
July 31st, 20104:22 pm
Braves got OF Wilkin Ramirez for a player to be named later…
Who is this Ramirez?
I honestly don’t know anything about Collins, but it doesn’t seem like we gave up much. And took on salary.
damn. Ankiels wiki page already has him as one of our outfielders
I told you to bet on INSIDER. The man is right about 99% on the time .
July 31st, 20104:23 pm
there was never talk of a deal for kemp. dodgers weren’t moving him.
BRAVES GET WILKIN RAMIREZ…BRAVES GET WILKIN RAMIREZ…BRAVES GET WILKIN RAMIREZ!!!!!
Who is Wilkin Ramirez ?
I hope this is true because I’ve said we needed Farnsworth, Dotel or Ohman…….. Plus Ankiel is a tremendous athlete
July 31st, 20104:24 pm
Lucky and insider- my hat is off. Now, insider go ahead and give us your sources.
is Ramirez middle relief?
Ankiel is a good center fielder. streaky hitter with pop. Just got healthy and started to hit. Farnsworth for Chavez probably a bit better than a push. Wilkin probably a replacement fro Blanco at Gwinnette
July 31st, 20104:25 pm
i work for the braves….no specific sources….sorry
J-Man, they have reported the trade all over the place including MLBTV. Why do you “hope” it is true.
J-Man…….Does this deal have your seal of approval?
ramirez is OF prospect, not ML ready, going to be in AAA, think of him as Jones’ replacement
July 31st, 20104:26 pm
Journeyman outfielder Mitch Jones was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates for cash. He’ll be assigned to their Triple-A Indianapolis affiliate.
Jones, 32, hit .250 with 18 homers, 45 RBIs and a .292 on-base percentage in 89 games. Braves general manager Frank Wren said the outfield had become crowded at Gwinnett.
We just traded for a younger Mitch Jones in Wilkin Ramirez … guess the outfield wasn’t so crowded after all
July 31st, 20104:27 pm
Plus if you remember Farnsworth had NO issues when he was here all he did was take more $$$$$ with the Yankees but he would have been our closer if he stayed
Ramirez is a 24 y/o OF who briefly played in Detroit at the end of last season. One of last cuts for them at the end of Spring Training. He has been in AAA-Toledo this season. Sounds like deal for future potential depth more then anything.
How long will the Braves have control of Farnworth and Ankiel?
jones was never going to get a shot at the show. ramirez has potential.
Don’t know if this is enough to give us more pop and worry pitchers. Better than a poke with a sharp stick I suppose
Wow , Ankeil. World Series here we come. my goodness
July 31st, 20104:28 pm
Merlin- Farnsworth is significantly better than Chavez. Not even close. Remember we are using him as a 6th/ 7th inning match-up guy, not a closer. VERY strong. Plus, might even give Wags a spell.
Another bases loaded one out inning ending DP. So predictable for the Bravos…
great throw j-hey
July 31st, 20104:29 pm
J-Man… Kyle gave it up to Houston in the playoffs as I recall. Fastball with no movement ended up beyond the train.
ankiel is going to be the 5th starter!
Braves have the best pitching in the East, all they need is to get some more timely hits with RISP. I believe that will happen.
July 31st, 20104:30 pm
Not a bad trade. From the way it sounds we didnt give up anything real big except for Chavez.Just kidding:)
July 31st, 20104:32 pm
Merlin your thinking of Joey Devine
Cox’s greatest strength is his faith and support of his players. Cox’s greatest weakness is the same (see Leibrandt in the world series as one example if you doubt this). I wish that he would see the wisdom of platooning Glaus and Hinske at first base , at least until such time as Glaus finds his groove again. He could then leave the braves best hitter, after Prado, Diaz in left and do whatever in ctr. with Cabreba, Infante, even Blanco when he comes back from Gwinnett.
So, FW essentially traded Escobar for Alex and Kyle. Not bad. And Blanco and Chavez for Ankiel.
The Farnsworth/Ainkel trade hasn’t hit the wire yet…
Who is reporting it?
July 31st, 20104:33 pm
Work for Braves in 80’s.
Marc in FL
Blanco was the perfect #8 hitter, he was really taking off in that role. I hope Ankiel doesn’t suck too bad the rest of the year.
Uh- Smitty, Blanco was just traded to KC for Rick Ankiel. But thanks for your deep insight on what Bobby Cox “should” do.
July 31st, 20104:34 pm
As reported by MLB’s own Buzz Blog: The Braves have landed outfielder Rick Ankiel and right-handed reliever Kyle Farnsworth from the Royals in exchange for outfielder Gregor Blanco, right-handed reliever Jesse Chavez and left-handed reliever Tim Collins.
Ankiel provides the Braves the upgrade they were seeking in center field and Farnsworth will return to Atlanta to provide the bullpen depth that general manager Frank Wren has been attempting to land over the past couple of weeks.
In another last minute deal, the Braves acquired Minor League outfielder Wilkin Ramirez from the Tigers in exchange for cash considerations or a player to be named later.
Farnsworth is pretty good, UNTIL you realllllly need him. He then comes apart like a cheap suit.
July 31st, 20104:35 pm
Good job by Wren. We bettered ourselves without giving up any of our big-time prospects. We all would love to win it all this year, but we are set up to have a TON of major talent coming to the show starting in 11-12 that should set us up to have a chance to make a long sustained run.
Overall I am happy with the deal. Hope Ankiel stays healthy and can contribute right away. Apparently Ramirez is supposed to be a pretty solid prospect.
TM- MLBTV has reported the deal as done.
prado on dl
No one at Braves game has said a word about trade. Right are wrong? Do players know it?
July 31st, 20104:36 pm
I really don’t like this deal. Blanco was one of my favorite young Braves.
I just hope Ankiel can turn it up w/a contender.
This is OK. It’s like Billy Knight turning Shelden Williams into Mike Bibby – the team is better now. It doesn’t put you over the top, but there is no guarantee that any move will put you over the top, and the deals that people foolishly say WILL put you over the top cost you too much.
Farnsworth appeared in 2 post season games for the Braves in 2005. Faced 12 batters in 3 innings and gave up two hits both home runs, walked 1 and allowed 3 runs vs Houston
insider- 15 day? surgery?
July 31st, 20104:37 pm
thanks johnsmith for re-reporting the news thats been reported 100 times
Typical…. great first inning with hits, BBs, RBIs…. then a 1-2-3 2nd…. need to jump on these guys early when we get a chance.
Ankiel has 9 hits in his last five games including a homer with KC…
I was just looking to see how much Ankiel would help us, but, honestly, without McOut, the outfield has been great since the AS break.
AVG OBP SLG OPS
Heyward .389 .492 .500 .992
Hinske .310 .412 .621 1.032
Melky .308 .404 .487 .891
Diaz .300 .344 .767 1.110
I had no idea Melky had been hitting that well. I guess it does still do a few things for us. It improves our OF defense, gives us more veteran depth, and gives us the option of playing Hinske over at 1B for Glaus. I mean, if we decided to sit Glaus the rest of the season, we could theoretically rotate Ankiel, Heyward, Diaz, Melky and Hinske in the OF and Hinske and either Omar or Prado at 1B.
July 31st, 20104:38 pm
Thank you, dlowe, for your sarcastic remark. It’s helped my focus immeasurably.
JV- fairly good comparison, That move did get the Hawks into the playoffs though.
one more dr. to take a look. will be announced mon. worse than expected.
July 31st, 20104:39 pm
Didn’t know about Blanco. I hate to see him go but don’t think he ever got a fair shake w/ the Braves. He did everything they could ask of him the last time around. He was the only drag bunter on the whole team and threw out runners at home like Heyward just did
July 31st, 20104:40 pm
So…. what do they do with McLouth?
I hope Blanco prospers in KC with the rest of the former Braves there under Dayton Moore.
15 day dl
