Journeyman outfielder Mitch Jones was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates for cash. He’ll be assigned to their Triple-A Indianapolis affiliate.

Jones, 32, hit .250 with 18 homers, 45 RBIs and a .292 on-base percentage in 89 games. Braves general manager Frank Wren said the outfield had become crowded at Gwinnett.

We just traded for a younger Mitch Jones in Wilkin Ramirez … guess the outfield wasn’t so crowded after all

Cox’s greatest strength is his faith and support of his players. Cox’s greatest weakness is the same (see Leibrandt in the world series as one example if you doubt this). I wish that he would see the wisdom of platooning Glaus and Hinske at first base , at least until such time as Glaus finds his groove again. He could then leave the braves best hitter, after Prado, Diaz in left and do whatever in ctr. with Cabreba, Infante, even Blanco when he comes back from Gwinnett.

As reported by MLB’s own Buzz Blog: The Braves have landed outfielder Rick Ankiel and right-handed reliever Kyle Farnsworth from the Royals in exchange for outfielder Gregor Blanco, right-handed reliever Jesse Chavez and left-handed reliever Tim Collins.

Ankiel provides the Braves the upgrade they were seeking in center field and Farnsworth will return to Atlanta to provide the bullpen depth that general manager Frank Wren has been attempting to land over the past couple of weeks.

In another last minute deal, the Braves acquired Minor League outfielder Wilkin Ramirez from the Tigers in exchange for cash considerations or a player to be named later.

Good job by Wren. We bettered ourselves without giving up any of our big-time prospects. We all would love to win it all this year, but we are set up to have a TON of major talent coming to the show starting in 11-12 that should set us up to have a chance to make a long sustained run.

This is OK. It’s like Billy Knight turning Shelden Williams into Mike Bibby – the team is better now. It doesn’t put you over the top, but there is no guarantee that any move will put you over the top, and the deals that people foolishly say WILL put you over the top cost you too much.

GT Fan

I was just looking to see how much Ankiel would help us, but, honestly, without McOut, the outfield has been great since the AS break.

AVG OBP SLG OPS
Heyward .389 .492 .500 .992
Hinske .310 .412 .621 1.032
Melky .308 .404 .487 .891
Diaz .300 .344 .767 1.110

I had no idea Melky had been hitting that well. I guess it does still do a few things for us. It improves our OF defense, gives us more veteran depth, and gives us the option of playing Hinske over at 1B for Glaus. I mean, if we decided to sit Glaus the rest of the season, we could theoretically rotate Ankiel, Heyward, Diaz, Melky and Hinske in the OF and Hinske and either Omar or Prado at 1B.
