FW needs to make a trade now!
a lot better news than i was expecting
July 31st, 20101:33 pm
DOB – any trades sitll in the works for the Bravos? Know it’s not likely but sure would like to get Dunn…Having Prado out is certainly going to hurt a lot, but rather go ahead and DL him to give a few more extra days so we have him healthy for stretch run plus rather not play short handed for next week and a half…
In all seriousness, Prado is the most important part of this team. If he’s only out for 1 week, it’s a huge blessing. I’m skeptical that he can avoid DL though…
July 31st, 20101:35 pm
If he’s only out a week it’s not too bad because Infante can fill in for him but if he’s out the whole 15 days could let the Phillies catch up to us. Hopefully it’s not that long.
July 31st, 20101:36 pm
If Gonzalez doesn’t play, are we a middle infielder short? I can’t think of who else can play 2B or SS, can Conrad fill in in either or those spots?
I hope this doesn’t mean Blanco is going back to AAA
July 31st, 20101:38 pm
Conrad at 2B.
July 31st, 20101:39 pm
New team policy….no more head first slides. We don’t need this right now. The Phillies are on our tails and we aren’t doing a thing to improve the team. We need a trade today. I’m worried Wren is going to stand pat and then we are going to hear him go on and on about waiver claims in a few weeks. How he thinks there are going to be quality players available. Two players we should be making a serious run at…Adam Dunn and Jacoby Ellsbury. Nuff said
prado is so important to this team;s winning that I see we will have more numbers in loss column than in win column.
IF Omar goes to 2nd and Omar is the only one who could be Prado for awhile but then who plays short.
Gonzalez is not a sure bet as gastritis is something that can bite you again and again.
by the way, Yunel is hitting .358 for Toronto. evidently they know how to handle him….we didn’;t and that is a shame.
who else could play SS if Gonzo gets sick again……and Prado goes on DL…who do we have at Gwinnett?
tex is lame
July 31st, 20101:40 pm
Damn we dont need to make a move now do we? just ellsbury and we are good like this site says..
July 31st, 20101:41 pm
oopps, me bad! Conrad at 2nd is a good option and keep Omar at SS but we know Cox won’t keep Omar at short. he hits tooo good.
OMAR AT SHORT AND CONRAD AT SECOND!
July 31st, 20101:42 pm
HICKS SHOULD GET A CALL SOON
new blog policy
the words -nuff said- are forever banned!
When are these guys going to learn that sliding head-first has more bad possible outcomes than good? Jeez.
Conrad’s natural position is 2nd. We have enough guys to fill the middle infield. Question may become one of quality versus quantity though…
July 31st, 20101:43 pm
Losing Prado is huge. Leadoff men impact on teams lineup is critical. Look at the Phils w/o Rollins and Mets without Reyes. To make it worse look at the next 10 starting pitchers the Braves will face….
Arroyo,Volquez,Santana,Dickey,Pelfrey,Linceum,Zito,Cain and J. Sanchez.
That’s tough for a lineup that has already been struggling as is.
and you cant take away head first slides. its baseball. sliding practice may be good though. he would not have scored and we may not have won if he didnt slide the way he did.
July 31st, 20101:44 pm
Kelly Johnson is being shopped…could help if Prado goes on the DL…and play LF when Prado comes back…Just sayin’
July 31st, 20101:45 pm
decent blog tex, did you break that before DOB did?
July 31st, 20101:46 pm
Yunel hitting .358 for Toronto?? I remember a guy named Jeff Francoeur who was leading the Mets in batting average, HRs and rbis back in April. Yunel will be Yunel as soon as he gets called for an error he disagrees with and spazzes out for an inning or two.
July 31st, 20101:47 pm
The big elephant in the room isn’t second base; Infante can sub there effectively for awhile. No, it’s at first base, where Troy Glaus is officially carrying the torch for Nate McLouth. With labor negotiations just a couple of years away that may well change the current structure of free agency and level the market for small market teams to be able to keep their young stars (if MLB knows what’s good for it), Freddie Freeman couldn’t be a more obvious choice to bring up NOW. Get it done if you have any interest at all in winning this year, Frank Wren; the window can close overnight.
you can take away head first slides….some teams have mandated that star players not do it….or, outfit players with a “cast” like device for players to wear…posednik of the dodger (formerly of the Royals) has one he wears after breaking finger…2nd time this year we’ve lost a catalyst to a head first slide…but I guess that’s baseball…so is missing the playoffs
July 31st, 20101:49 pm
We need a good hitter Prado, Heyward, Mccan aren’t an army of hitters there three.
Our pitching is fine we need Dunn or another hitter I don’t care if we trade many “prospects” in Triple A to get him!!!!!!
July 31st, 20101:50 pm
I love Freeman, I think it may be wise to bring him up to give Glaus a extended breather. Maybe recharge his batteries. Don’t give up on him yet. We were all calling for his head in April and then he led the team in May to a lot of wins. If it wasn’t for him, we’re not in 1st. But I do need he needs a break….and a long one at that.
Please don’t trade for Ellsbury! Play Gregor in center, Diaz in left, Hinske at first for 5 days…give Glaus some days off and he will be okay…If making a move go for Dunn, please no Ellsbury.
Troy Glaus WTF WTF!!!!! is wrong
July 31st, 20101:51 pm
Rumor has it we might get Cody Ross from da Marlins iz on MLB
Yeah no more sliding head first(Ricky Henderson did it for 20 years) or trying to take second baseman out or diving for balls or trying to knock the ball out of the catchers hand. No more foul tips off the foot or shin and for goodness sake when a guy throws 90+ don’t get anywhere near the ball. Bunch of nansies.
Prado plays hard agressive baseball – it’s what got him here and he should never change.
July 31st, 20101:52 pm
we don’t have a lot of prospects in AAA, our strength is pitching in the lower levels…but, we’re not giving them up…and I don’t blame Wren for holding onto them….Medlen and Minor are going to be the ones to go if we make a “major” trade
July 31st, 20101:53 pm
Maybe we can pick up KJ, Andruw, Frenchy, Cody Ross, Adam Dunn, and even convince Smoltzie to close for us. We need to fill in for Prado and counter the Phil’s move NOW
July 31st, 20101:54 pm
Glaus needs to be replaced. If not replaced, at least dropped in the batting order. Hit 5 of the weakest ground balls ever last night. Statues have more speed. If a runner had been on first base, it would have been 5 double plays. A rally killing machine.
July 31st, 20101:55 pm
Cody Ross is not much of an improvement….I like J Clay’s take: gregor in CF, Diaz in LF and Hinske on 1B. and to heck with whether the opponent’s pitcher is a righty or lefty. who says Matty can’t hit right handers. tis a mystery to this ole woman
No way Minor goes. They need a lefty in the starting rotation . I have this feeling odd man out is Lowe.
July 31st, 20101:57 pm
Ricky did it for 20 years….but Heyward did it for 2 months and tore his hand up…and now Prado. I know it’s needed at times, but at other times it is not. We’ll see what happens next time we lose a team leader to a head first slide.
What’s wrong with Ellsbury….nothing. When he’s full strength in a few weeks he gives the team an X factor that we don’t have. Speed on the base paths drastically effects a game.
I am tired of the silly, teenage girlish FIRST crap. Will the “guardian” of the website please not allow it?
Sometimes the best trade is the one that you did NOT make.
July 31st, 20101:58 pm
DUMB DUMB DUMB! Apparently Prado didn’t learn a damn thing about sliding head first. He was out for a couple of months before with an injured hand when he slid into a base head first. It hurts the team when that happens to a player. Like the man said, players should be fined when sliding head first. I guess you can’t cure STUPID.
July 31st, 20101:59 pm
Gregor is not an every day CF, if he was…he would have been there a long time ago. He’s great for a short time…but not the whole season and not in the playoffs…we’ve had Gregor for how long and how many CF’s in that time….obviously someone doesn’t think he can handle it
July 31st, 20102:02 pm
Roja – clearly you are either not a Braves fan or simply in the minority. How is this team going to win the division as constructed? look at our next ten games with a lineup that seriously is struggling. our competition has improved – Padres, Cardinals and PHILLIES. FW HAS to make a trade if he cares about winning period. We need a bat and an 8th inning reliever b/c since his injury Saito has s*it the bed
Flag – He may not be option long term in center but neither is Ellsbury…they both have speed (so did McLouth) – I’d rather roll with Gregor than give up prospects for Ellsbury…Recall, Bobby did not think Prado was everyday material either until KJ was hurt – even after he came back they put him in over Prado for a week or two…Cox, for all his strengths, if he has made up his mind on someone tough to change his mind…The move to give up prospects for would be Dunn – though I doubt that will happen
Ouch! On the bright side, Infante will finally get to play.
July 31st, 20102:04 pm
Why don’t some of the brilliant GM’s on here just trade KK and McLouth to the Reds for Votto and Cueto even up.
Chief Nock A Homa
As guardian of this website, I now no longer allow Vanfowler to comment!
(Spoken in a loud booming voice, of course)….
July 31st, 20102:05 pm
Akinori Iwamura appears to have regained his stroke at AAA. And I bet the Pirates would let him go cheap. Just sayin’.
Hey bobby – can we sweeten the deal a bit and add in Chavez? They might be interested given last night’s performance! haha
Who made head first sliding popular in the major leagues?
I agree we need another arm in the ‘pen but I think that can wait until waivers. No point in paying a premium price for Downs, Frasor, Dotel, etc…. We could still bring up Kimbrel. We need bats….plural as in more than one. I like Seabass but where is the power he had in Toronto. We need proven players too. I’m glad Hart and Ross are off the market. They are one hit (if that many) wonders… I really don’t know why everyone is in love with Ross…his numbers aren’t great.
Man….there’s slightly less than 2 hours left before the trade deadline. Can’t the Braves make some kind of trade? They always need another bat. And they have one pitcher in the bullpen that is just dead weight…can’t use him (KK). An arm, a bat, or a callup would be nice. Yes. I know that the minors are entering their last month of the season. But, the Braves are trying to hold off the division contenders after they just got stronger. They need to stay at least five steps ahead.
By the way….glad Prado’s injury wasn’t more serious. My heart fell into my stomach last night when I saw him writhing in pain miliseconds after scoring in that headfirst slide. You’d think the rest of the team would learn from J-Hey’s DL stint to stay away from that sort of slide. Siggghhhhh…..
And, I think it’s ridiculous that the Yanks just got Lance Berkman. WHY did they need anyone else? Sometimes I think that a salary cap is needed just for certain teams so that parity can exist in the MLB as a whole.
July 31st, 20102:06 pm
Seriously, might we be one of the mystery teams in on either Dunn or Manny?? I really can’t imagine Manny, just because of potential clubhouse issues, but have to believe FW is at least making a run at Dunn…
Either of those bats puts us at ease, though…
July 31st, 20102:07 pm
For all those banging on the head-first slide, it should be noted that Magglie Ordonez broke his ankle on 7/24 using a feet-first slide!
July 31st, 20102:08 pm
Who was the guy Conrad beat out for the last roster spot in spring training? Was it Joe Thurston? I believe he is a utility type guy that would be a better choice than Hicks.
July 31st, 20102:11 pm
J Clay- Ellsbury has speed and can hit for average and has done so consistently at the ML level. I know that Bobby didn’t give Prado a chance…but Gregor has yet to prove he can do it….every time he fills in he starts off good and then cools…he is not and will not be an everyday CF…a nice piece for the bench and that is it.
Prado Has Fractured Pinky; DL Decision in Couple Days | Tomahawk Take | An Atlanta Braves Blog
[...] Reported by the AJC, Martin Prado has a fractured pinky and the guess is 7-10 days. Bobby will let Prado sit a couple days before making the decision on whether to place him on the disabled list. [...]
DOBber, all i have to say is this, Al Rosen…1954 All Star game…look it up
July 31st, 20102:12 pm
For unemployed Chief Nock A Homa……………I’m baaaaaaccccccckkk!
I too was wondering about Manny…but I don’t think he fits this clubhouse
The Real Don Steele
Yunel will be a good, hot dog player on a mediocre team. Hope he makes the Hall of Fame but he couldn’t be part of a championship caliber team where he’s not the big show. Prado’s success pushed him over the edge. So long and good luck!

Dodgers just got Lilly
Grandpa Right, formerly of Cochran
July 31st, 20102:14 pm
I’d rather get KJ back than Cody Ross- he could play 2nd for the next 2 weeks and then move to the OF after that. Neither is enough of an improvement to give up a strong prospect.
Escobar’s short-term success only PROVES that he can play when he wants to play. As far as I am concerned, it simply confirms that he needed to go. He’ll get bored with his new surroundings and the same old Esco will be back.
Blanco in CF and the 8th spot gives us a second leadoff man. Diaz every day is better thyan enyone else that has been mentioned in trade deals.
Vanfowler’s not playing by the rules…
He now must be banned from all sites….
JK – don’t get all worked up over it….
July 31st, 20102:15 pm
i’d like to see Ohman back in our pen…he is lights out and does a great Harry Caray impression
Manny doesn’t fit our clubhouse, but gotta think his bat would be exactly what would take us all the way…
July 31st, 20102:19 pm
DOB – any thoughts on what FW might be doing???
It’s so quiet, don’t you think he might be exploring something fairly big?? Seems to be how he’s always operated…
No to Ross, he’s no help…..
July 31st, 20102:20 pm
I’m worried that it is quiet as far as the Braves are concerned…but there was nothing about the Esco-Seabass trade….so I’m okay with quiet as long as there is a big bang before 4
Ross is off the market since Coghlan got hurt….ok by me
July 31st, 20102:21 pm
KJ sounds like a good fit for now. I am unsure if he signed for 2 years at Arizona though. He can play LF and 2nd Base just fine. Plus, he would not disrupt the chemistry of the team. Jeff Francouer is an option as well. Nobody bitched about him defensively and he can cover the 7th spot well. The expectations were too high the first time around. Prado will be missed. Thankfully Infante is there to help!
Whoever says that headfirst slides should be banned should be banned. Whoever says that the Escobar trade is hurting the Braves should be banned. Whoever says that Bobby is an idiot should be banned. Whoever thinks that the Braves will be fine with Conrad starting ANYWHERE should be banned.
July 31st, 20102:22 pm
what a bunch of pathetic losers to complain that Prado got injured hustling and sliding head first. Oh No a player got injured playing a game!!!! What a shock! Maybe any player who runs into a wall or gets hit by a pitch or dives for a grounder those guys should get “fined” too. Injury is part of the game. These are real humans playing a real game, not the computer fantasy game that you mom’s basement living, fish belly white, Dorito’s eating, man boob having losers are playing. Get a life.
July 31st, 20102:25 pm
the fact that frank wren can’t get creative and find us a servicable outfield bat is driving me crazy
Prado got hurt playing the game the way it should be played. All out to win! Pete Rose style. get over it DA. Prado is a gamer! Gives 110% all the time, team player, U do what U have to to win.
July 31st, 20102:28 pm
Dave- Is it safe to assume that Prado’s injury isn’t going to require a surgical pin? I know other avulsion fractures can require pinning. Will have a cast for a few days? Although I am hopeful, the description of the injury sounds worse than a 10 day stint.
tyler nj brave
enough with the head first slide talk…..plain and simple, if he didn’t hurt his hand you would have said what a beautiful slide it was.
Get Ellsbury…..makes our team that much more potent because heyward goes into an RBI spot in the line up
July 31st, 20102:29 pm
We should have got Dunn two years ago instead of that broken down left fielder. can’t even remember his name now
He may not be option long term in center but neither is Ellsbury…they both have speed (so did McLouth) – I’d rather roll with Gregor than give up prospects for Ellsbury
Agree. Ellsbury is basically an invention of ESPN. He’s nothing special – I would not give up anything decent on the farm for this guy. It’d be one thing if he were great defensively, which he isn’t, or had a really great career OBP, which he doesn’t. He’s got speed, but doesn’t get on enough.
I wouldn’t mind him as a bench guy, but to give up real prospects and make him the every day CF? No way.
July 31st, 20102:30 pm
I know Rick Ankiel has missed all but 30 games of the season, but in the 10 games since he has been back he is hitting the ball hard and with base hits. why wouldnt we take a flier on him?
July 31st, 20102:31 pm
Scrub – he’s already gone to the Padres..
July 31st, 20102:32 pm
Hinskie needs to play first, so we can rest Glaus. A long rest. And we need to pray that Cox doesn’t get Greg Norton back before the deadline. Our great manager Cox who all last year pinch hit Norton ahead of Conrad.
July 31st, 20102:33 pm
Oooops sorry Scrub – it was Ludwick, not Ankiel… Could be a help…
July 31st, 20102:34 pm
J Clay and others:
Jacoby Ellsbury would be a MAJOR upgrade for a team that is woefully short on speed. Any one who feels that Blanco is a better player than Ellsbury needs a serious reality check!
ankiel is still with the royals
July 31st, 20102:36 pm
I just enjoy it when the GM’s on this blog say who is a every-day player and who is not.You never know until someone is given the chance.(Prado for instance).Blanco needs a chance and Thurston would be a better call-up than Hicks. He has ML experience and can play second as well as third. You know we need an extra player for thirdbase fropm time to time.As foir Yunel,I still say it was a bad trade. Our next manager might have done a better job of relating to YE,but BC made sure we will never know.A potential superstar get traded for a journeyman.Oh yeah.did Bobby jump Chipper for not running on a pop up with two outs?Oh no,his oblique or his whatever was hurting him,but for the first time in many moons he don’t go on DL.Amazing, isn’t it?Prado get well, because you are due arbitration and you know you are not a back-up catcher,so beware.GO BRAVES….. .
July 31st, 20102:37 pm
Right……120+ steals in 2 seasons is nothing special, but somehow Gregor Blanco and his part time .300 avg is? Ok…..glad to know that ESPN conjured up all those steals and those .300 avgs. were just flukes. Geez and some of your arm chair GMs called Frank Wren stupid.
I know his history is injury prone, but he is not owed a lot of money. i would be the same type of move like Glaus.
July 31st, 20102:38 pm
Church traded to D-Backs..
July 31st, 20102:40 pm
DId not say Blanco better than Ellsbury….but did say I would not give up prospects for Ellsbury, rather would take my chances with Blanco….Dunn is worth trading prospects for IMO but not Ellsbury
July 31st, 20102:41 pm
Anyone watching Prado throwing himself at the plate last night, or seeing Heyward launching himself for an extra base on one of his self-created doubles, should recognize something larger about the players many blog-posters so blithely eviscerate with their snide commentary. These extraordinary athletes may look indifferent standing at the plate– slack and barely engaged as they try to master pitches being thrown at them. A truer image of the intensity they bring is in the base-running and especially the slides, throwing themselves headlong and perhaps even unwisely at the bag (you could see it in the just-plunked Medlen going into second-base last night, doing what he could to prevent a double play). Prado’s slide last night showed him frantic to touch home– how COULD he let his right arm get under there– risking himself and the career that is opening-up for him to score a run the Braves finally didn’t even need. That effort is implicit in every at-bat, every pitch thrown. The brotherhood of cheap-shot writers on this blog need to acknowledge that.
Ellsbury is clearly a better player than Blanco. To say anything else is just silly, but is Ellsbury better than Blanco enough to make up for what you would have to give up to get him? That is a reasonable question, but the problem is we have no idea what the Red Sox would want in return if they were even interested in moving him.
July 31st, 20102:42 pm
it’s not imperative that Frank make a trade by 4 pm today…
it’s imperative to made the deal by the end of August. Today is the “soft” deadline. End of August is the “hard” deadline to add players for the post season roster.
I’d rather make the right deal by the end of August than make a bad deal by 4 pm today.
July 31st, 20102:43 pm
Latest tweet from DOB says likely Braves get a trade done for a reliever and/or hitter…
Ross is a waste of a move and if it happens its b/c the Braves are broke. Recall Bowman said after the winter moves were completed the Braves had maybe 1.5-2mm left for a bat at the deadline.
Well they spent that money on Gonzo.
It is no mystery why Wren has made no moves – he has no more salary room. I hope to be proved wrong (massively wrong in fact) but no move or getting a mediocre guy like Ross or a no name reliever screams “we are flat broke”
Wren would have to be high to think waiting on Nate and Diaz was an important step for his post season aspirations.
Come on, Nat has been bad since the late Summer of 2009 and Diaz does the same thing after every DL stint – he hits like Babe Ruth for 30-45 days then tanks.
How are a bench player and a wrecked CF key variables for a team serious chasing a ring?
Answer – they only are when you are at your payroll ceiling with zero flexibility from your corporate owner.
The brass is likely more worried about paying Glaus and or Saito’s accelerators than they are getting a impact power bat for the OF.
Wren is hoping Chipper retires, FF is ready, Gonzo hits 25hrs/yr until he leaves and Carl Crawford returns his phone call come November.
I doubt he is financially prepared to go “all in” this year.
I posted this now to look like at goat at 4pm!!!! I hope my bell and collar are ready in 90min.
July 31st, 20102:44 pm
The thing about Ellsbury is, he’s often over matched by good pitching. He’s just not that good. He’s a guy you like in small samples – the daily grind exposes him for what he is: great speed/bad jumps/no arm in OF. great speed/mediocre bat/average OBP at the plate.
I think people get mesmerized by the idea of speed for it’s own sake. But in baseball, there’s a reason why slugging trumps speed. You can’t steal first base.
July 31st, 20102:45 pm
Who knows on Escobar? I think Yunel needs to find a manager who understands that when he dyes the top of his hair blonde that it is really a testament to how focused he is on baseball.
July 31st, 20102:46 pm
the braves need to move today….waiting until the end of august is going to sink this team…the phillies made up 5 games in a week and have added another #1 pitcher….we need to counter today….or in another week we’ll be looking up at the phillies in the standings
oswalt is no longer a no. 1
July 31st, 20102:47 pm
SRI, I don’t think Braves were in on Ludwick this time. Not sure, but that’s my understanding.
There’s a problem with that Aug deadline though. If the Braves find a player that they covet on the waiver wire, then being a first place team doesn’t help when everyone else gets a chance to make a claim on that player before you can. And then if you are lucky enough to find the right guy and claim him, you have to come up with a match for the team giving him up. The only players who slip through are those owed a large sum of money. The Braves are not going to claim those players and the ones they can afford are not going to fall to them on the waiver wire. Especially when teams who are chasing you have a chance to claim them first.
And yes…..anytime a player can legitimately give you 50 steals a season and be a threat at the top of your lineup….it is worth one or two prospects. Especially when that lead-off threat will make your whole lineup better. Who else on this roster now can do that?
I hear Ken Griffey Jr is available and talking to the Braves again……jk
We talk baseball, other sports, music, movies, BBQ and whatever (except politics or religion)
