Braves’ quotes after Friday’s 10-inning win

BOBBY COX

“Heck of a ballgame. Mac came through big for us. Medlen, I thought he was throwing outstanding tonight. Too bad he got hit and had to come out, but he should be OK for his next start.”

“Prado, I don’t know. He’s going to go have it X-rays real quick and see what’s up. He jammed [his finger] when he slid somehow. Gonzalez barely felt good enough to get in the game, but we were out of players, so he had to.”

“The bullpen again was good. Johnny gave up the homer, but it looked like a fly ball.”

On the would-be Conrad homer

“It was over the fence. [Heisey] made a great play on the ball, timed it perfectly. I didn’t know if he caught it or not, till I saw the replay.

“Conrad, I can’t say enough about him, how great he’s been all year as a pinch-hitter and reserve on the bench filling in at times.”

On Prado and Heyward at-bats in 10th: “They had good ones. Great ones. Jason came through.”

On the Medlen balk: “He said he moved his front leg or something, but he didn’t. I saw it.”

On Philadelphia finally losing: “It’s good they got beat. It’s fun to watch the scoreboard. You’ve got to take care of your own game.”

KRIS MEDLEN

“I felt great. After the balk I felt like I made my pitches, they just put them in play in good spots. Cabrera’s a tough guy to strike out, and Rolen came up with a good hit, too.”

“It was a good win. We needed one. We’ve kind of scuffled on this road trip. Overall huge win. Two really good teams playing against each other, two teams at the top of their division. Really good win for us.”

On the full house, loud crowd

“Playoff atmosphere. If we win the East, then it could be a [postseason] matchup for us.”

On his lower forearm injury

“It just feels bruised. It hit me in the meaty area, not on the bone or anything. Once I got hurt my hand was shaking. It hurt. It’s just really sore right now. Who knows how it’ll be feel tomorrow, but I’ve just been icing since I’ve been in [the clubhouse].”

BRIAN McCANN

“I was thinking, there were more things that happened in this game tonight…. It was a battle between two really good teams, two really good pitching staffs.

“The at-bat Heyward had tonight, it was – you know, when you’re 20 years old you’re not supposed to be doing stuff like that. And off one of the better closers in the game.

“With the game on the line, he’s one of the guys we want coming up. He came through for us tonight.”

On Medlen

“Every time he takes the mound he competes as hard as you can compete. That one inning, just a couple of bloops, got the balk called on him and I think he got out of rhythm for a minute. Then just started locating after that.”

On hitting at this ballpark

“It’s amazing to come here and hit. It’s … [chuckles] I don’t know. It’s not a big yard at all. It’s not a big yard at all.”

“It’s still two months in the season, but it’s two teams in first place. Every game from here on out is big. This is what you play the game for.”

On Chavez

“He came in and did exactly what we needed him to do. Pounded the zone, got a big strikeout to end the inning.”

JASON HEYWARD

“It was late in the game. I had a good idea what I needed to get done right there, just be patient and try not to do too much.”

On whether this is what you’d guess playoff atmosphere is like

“I would say it’s gotta be something close to it. Another first-place team from another division, and they’ve got a big crowd. They’re coming out playing really well. It was great to hang in there against them on the road and get a win.”

On winning series opener and gaining game on Philly

“We’ve got to win, that’s the bottom line. Series opener, series ender – we’ve got to win games.”

“Regardless of first place or last place [opponent], we want to play well and we want to win series. That’s the goal. The first two series [on the trip] you’ve got to give credit to both those teams. They play really well in their home parks.”

REDS’ JOEY VOTTO

“In my opinion the Braves have an outstanding bullpen, the best in baseball.”

Great win tonight. Hope Prado is okay. If Medlin needs some time, i would like to see minor get the call. Another good start tonight. 1 hit in 7 innings. Also would be a rest for medlin. Hope wren goes and gets somebody tommorow. Ellsbury or C. Young are prolly the best fit. Lets go bravos.

Hey guys, just wanted to let you know I am alright. I got bent under a little bit, but it’s really nothing more than a sprain. I will probably get in the way of Martin swinging a bat for a few days, but I think me and him can get our groove back by middle of next week. Expect Martin to be sidelined all weekend with a big bag of ice on me, but we will be back to whoopin azz and taking names around Tuesday-ish.

Prado's Pinky

July 31st, 2010
7:03 am

and willie g… turn out the lights, party’s over? Not hardly. Yankees are a team of guys that will be playing the senior circuit in 18 months. If we had a team that played .300 baseball in our division, we would be playing .630 ball as well. I look for their old fogies to ramp down in the next month. Rays are going to edge them in September while they are on cruise control eating Geritol.

braveshoo

If prado just has a jammed or even a broken pinky, he can play with that. If he has torn ligaments, he is out 6-8 weeks, and we are history. We cant absorb this injury.
Also, it is obvious Glaus needs to go on the DL. He is hitting below .200 the last 100 bats, with no power because his knees are shot and he cant get his legs into his swing. I think he is hanging on because he has a bonus prvision in his contract if he gets over a certain number of bats. DL him now; bring up Freeman, and let him and Hinske split time at 1B.
And finally, Infante has got to play every day.

He is not out if he slides feet first with a hook slide . I’ll bet very few players know what a hook slide is let alone how to make one. Gosh I learned how to make a hook slide both on the left slide and the right side when I was in high school in the sliding pit. In those days nobody got hurt from a hook slide because your foot was on the side and your spikes did not get caught unlike a straight on slide where your spikes would get caught if you not did do it right.

Chillahill43

Yea whatever he would have been out with a hook slide. You guys that were so good in high school. I mean you really come on here and talk about how YOU did it in high school, these are world class athletes and you want to hive them advise about sliding and hitting and throwing. Get real clowns they are trying to WIN and if that means head first slide to increase chance of beating the throw, then head first it is. But please i could give a S&it how you did it highschool. This is PRO

For all those who keep talking about how the Yankees will when it all, yes it’s true they have an all-star lineup over there but baseball is one of those funny games where you can have the best team in the world but come playoff time, if you’re cold, then you will lose. Remember the 2001 Mariners and the 2006 Cardinals.

Ellsbury is one the most over rated players going. ESPN, hard up for anything Red Sox, built this guy up. He had a nice 2007 postseason, but a larger sample size shows he doesn’t get good jumps on the ball in the outfield, has a dreadful arm, and although he has some line drive ability and is not just a slap hitter, he is not what you would call a tough out. Of course, it would depend on what you give up, but this isn’t a guy I would build my outfield around, that’s a cinch.

braveshoo, inclined to agree on Escobar. Too much ability, too much youth, and playing the premier up-the-middle position, to grow impatient and deal him away.

while his centerfield defense might be a bit overrated, a .770 ops with 70 steals (and only 12 caught stealing) is a stellar season and i’d love that production from a centerfielder. according to fangraphs, he’s a very average defensive centerfielder, which is much better than anything we’re getting from melky, mclouth, or even blanco (who looks the part but his defensive stats are subpar). if we can get him for one of our lefty relief surplus pitchers and a rank 15-25 prospect, you’ve got to pull the trigger.

Martin will do anything to help the team, head frist was the only way he could have scored on that play. He is the heart of the team [WHAT EFFORT] if he is out for any lengh of time we are in real trouble. Also Blanco is eligable to be brought back up today, DO IT! and if no trade also bring Freeman up, he could be ready to hit big league pitching.

Yea and i know what the hook is and i know that no matter you explaining high school physics and college kenisiology and bla bla bla. You can bet your arse the reason that they slide head first is that it is Quicker period….. Look DUDE players go on DL swinging at pitches, running & throwing. Oh i get it lets stop all that too… My point.. This game goes at twice the speed of High School. And u better bet they do what it takes to win. Period. —- just tired of you Glory Days guys telling me how you did it when u were 16… These are pros…. They know what they are doing…. And sometimes you have to risk to get the reward…..

BobbyMahlon is right regarding feet first sliding using the hook slide. Also allows you to pop up real quick if the ball is thrown away. Watch Chipper the next time he slides. At least he is still doing this proficiently. Head first slides lead to many serious hand & finger injuries. Mike Minor & Stephen Marek have been pitching great at Gwinnett and deserve a callup along with Freeman.

Rhino

Heyward has looked like the Heyward of early this season minus the power. I think the thumb might be holding back some of his power. Either way, he’s hitting the other way and looks great.

I wonder if the lack of moves by Frank Wren means he thinks Freeman and other minor leaguers might be called up soon to give the Braves a boost. Roughly 4 hours to the trade deadline….

Ok hook slide is the best thats why the best base stealer in baseball (ricky henderson) never went in face first. Yea you can get hurt hand and wrists but you can do that batting. . Ask Medlin. And omar…. Ask magglio ordonez if the hook slide guarantees a safe trip back to the bench. The reaction they have is get to the bag…. This aint your old mans game anymore. Players are stronger quicker faster than the 60s 70 s and 80s. . You play the game. You play it for 162 games at full speed. You sometimes get hurt. Say lah veee!!!!
Ok its not ideal. But its part of the game. It aint always the best choice but at the time they do it they feel its the best choice. Its part of the game lets just hope its a 15 day and not a 45 day injury!!!

What’s happening with KK? When was the last time he pitched?

Now that both Medlen and Hanson cooled off a bit, I think it might not be a bad idea to move KK back in the rotation and move Medlen back in the pen. That would strengthen the pen and KK is just as good as Medlen and Hanson have been lately.

William and braveshoo- STFU…

=====

You lost me at ‘STFU.”

It’s a small mind that is threatened by differing opinions. Did you think an internet board, of all things, isn’t a place for differing opinions?

We all don’t have to be in love with choices made by management, to “prove” your corny concept of fandom.

If you were actually more secure in your stance – whatever that is – I would explain to you that it is a sign of intelligence to be able to gracefully accept that not everyone agrees with you.

Intelligent people don’t get emotionally twisted up when someone dissents, because usually they’ve arrive at their viewpoint by careful consideration of what they consider the facts, therefore, they possess a modicum of confidence in their position. They don’t lose their self-composure when someone doesn’t back their view up, like a 2-year old who cries if he doesn’t get his way. Some people, believe it or not, are actually stimulated by “debate” – perhaps you don’t realize this, but our nation is founded on such a system of democratic thought and process.

I would explain this to you, as I said, if you could understand it, but since you cannot, I’ll skip the lecture. I’m sure, one day, the light will dawn for you.
