Braves trade Mitch Jones to Pittsburgh

CINCINNATI – While the Braves continued pursuing possible additions before Saturday’s non-waiver trade deadline, they made a small deal Friday that shed an outfielder from Triple-A Gwinnett’s roster.

Journeyman outfielder Mitch Jones was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates for cash. He’ll be assigned to their Triple-A Indianapolis affiliate.

Jones, 32, hit .250 with 18 homers, 45 RBIs and a .292 on-base percentage in 89 games.  Braves general manager Frank Wren said the outfield had become crowded at Gwinnett.

The Braves were trying to add a proven hitter or relief pitcher before Saturday’s 4 p.m. deadline. Payroll constraints and a reluctance to trade elite prospects presented obstacles.

“We are looking at different scenarios,” general manager Frank Wren said in an e-mail Friday. “[We] have had lots of conversations but there are limited players available at this time that fit our needs.”

I thought Mcguirk said that the Braves didn’t have cutting payroll this season. We now see that those were both untruths.

Third????!?!?!?!
now we need to get a proven, yet cheap, outfielder! What about Guillen or Ross?

Is Ross still on the market and what’s his price?

Are the Braves also looking for relief help?

Oh yeah…greaaaat move Wren. Trade someone with a decent average (not great but decent) and who also has 18 HR’s…when the Braves need another %$#@# bat in that lineup.

Yeah, wonderful job Wren.

Whatever happened to Scott Proctor? Seems like a healthy Proctor could be just what the doctor ordered. As far as outfielders go, Jim Edmonds could probably be had and would represent a huge upgrade.

trading medlen is the worst idea ever. he has good stuff, really good stuff. i agree that we would be great trade bait, but i am vehemently opposed.
i don’t think minor is going anywhere; he’s the only southpaw stud in their near future. i thought he would be traded since he’s supposedly ready for the show until i found out he was a lefty.

I would be very surprised if Frank Wren were to trade Medlen unless the Braves get a heck of a lot more than Cody Ross. Trading Medlen for a hitter is very risky. You know what you got with Medlen, which is a good starter or reliever with a killer change-up that makes his fastball look more fierce than the radar gun would indicate.

If you trade him for a bat then you really have to hope the guy hits for a new team in a new stadium and possibly in a new league. I think not.

PS: You have to really be blinded by irrational hate for Chipper Jones (RBI tonight, by the way) to blame him for Rolen advancing to 3rd on that fly ball. Just a quick thought. Could be wrong, but seems like Wagner’s velocity is still pretty darn good, but his heater is straightening out too much and staying out over the plate rather than bearing in on righties and running from lefties. Just a thought. Slider is still nasty, but teams are sitting on (straight) fastballs early in the count and jumping on it.

Either way, big save tonight. 3.5 up.

This team needs a bat especially if Prado goes down to injury. Guillian looks like the best option

play Prado at first and Infante at 2nd base. Sit Glaus until his ankle heals then maybe he will get his hitting groove back.

DOB tweet:

#Braves’ Prado is being X-rayed now, jammed a finger on his right hand sliding on that winning hit.

To bring someone up you have to sit someone down…so let’s put Troy on the 15 day disabled list..legs/hip…and bring Freeman up to play 1st for a bit and see if he can bring his bat up…

Still have Hinske and Infante to rotate at first with Freeman if he struggles…

Of course all this depends on Prado and his hand…

i couldn’t believe when the braves president stated that the payroll didnt go down, that it was about the same or higher. even with the bonus money to glaus and saito, the braves were about $2 million less than 2009 25 man roster….
