Also, as much as I love the Braves it just puzzles me when I see KK just sitting in the dugout. Do you remember way back when Bill Naharodney? did not play like the first 50 games of the season. I swear I think Cox was manager then.
Anyway, why not just cut the guy. If you’re not going to use him then trade, cut, demote or just export back. You’re blowing your money anyway. Fill that roster spot with potential.
There’s nobody out on the market right now that I want. I’ll stick with what I got and see if something frees up before september.
I wanted Mike Cameron or Marlon Byrd but Frank said NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.
“I just have to laugh at Wren if he thinks the team we currently have is good enough to beat a team like the Yankees, Rangers, or Rays in the World Series.”
Like every other baseball series, it all depends on whose pitching is hotter that week.
We are the only baseball team who ever ran into Prior and Wood during a Best of Five playoff series when they were healthy. We were the better team but they were the buzzsaw.
Braves team ranks in SB since 2005: 6th, 16th, 14th, 13th, 15th, and so far this year 14th. Acquiring a speed guy does very little when the team doesn’t attempt to steal bases. That’s like acquiring Adam Dunn to sacrifice bunt.
Where is DOB? Less than Twenty-four hours from the deadline and DOB is missing in action. Hello is this mic working?
How bout V. Wells? — Nick Esasky
How ’bout him? He’s got one of the worst contracts any team has handed out, a contract he so underperforms that not even the biggest-payrolled teams are interested in trading for him, not to mention teams in the middle of the pack in payroll. That contract is awful.
The point about Ellsbury is that his slugging % can be overlooked if he can consistently steal bases, and at a 85% clip with a 120 SBs the last two years, I’d sure say slugging can be overlooked.
Also has made 2 career errors and has a .997 fielding %. Obviously not a great measure of defensive ability, but that’s still pretty neat stat.
Shadetree, I completely agree. KK had a great year last year and has pitched better this season than his record and ERA imply. Seeing him sit there is such a frustrating waste. At least pitch him before you pitch Jessie Chavez!!!
@Rhino: Even one inning every few days is better than 1 appearance in the past month. Even 1 inning every few weeks is better than Jesse Chavez’s 1 inning every few weeks.
Ross back on the table according to Stark. Those Fish ain’t fooling anyone. They’ll move him before the deadline…and they probably won’t get what they want for him either.
I have no optimism at all in this team. We are a good team that will fade in the playoffs, if we make the playoffs. I don’t see how this team is any better than those teams from 2000-2005 that made it to the playoffs every year and choked in the 1st round.
Based on a very concise observation by DB it would seem that the Braves should stand pat and dip into the farm for help. I don’t really see anybody out there that would be worth selling the future for a gamble on the present. I still think that this team; with the right luck; can make the playoffs.
Gone Viral, your 2nd paragraph contradicts your 1st paragraph.
I believe we can hang with anyone.
The only team to really thrash us this year was the White Sox.
I would take Huddy and JJ as my 1 and 2 starters. Hanson, Medlin or Lowe for the 3rd starter is not a bad choice. Of those 3 who do you think would give you the best 6 innings.
well success % is an important part of the value of steals, but steals ain’t all that valuable to begin with except in specific situations. Stolen bases do not correlate all that highly with runs scored as a team.
I’d be interested in Ellsbury if the price is right (he’s not the player ESPN would have you think he is), but a good scouting report on his defense would make me feel better about getting him.
Yea, Ellsbury may be a carrer .300 hitter, but he has’nt been this year and what makes you think he will be the rest of this year moving to a new league where he has’nt seen the pitchers. Look how long it took Melky to get use to it.
Ellsbury career SB% 131/154, 85% in 2 seasons or so. I’d love that at the top of my lineup with a .300 average, and .350 on base. I wonder what it would really take for Jacoby?
Can’t really add SB to SLG alone. You’d have to subtract CS from OBP as well, but even so, a single/walk and SB is not as valuable as a 2B, so it makes your new calculated SLG a lot more suspect.
@kerryb: I do believe that cracked ribs might set you back a little on a season. Go, now. Look at his stats and then come back and tell me how much he actually played this year. Then we’ll talk about how much that .250 BA means.
Has anyone else reported a rumor about Ellsbury other than DOB?
Not questioning O’Brien but before I get excited about something like this I would like to see it from other sources…I don’t see the Red Sox trading Ellsbury and is 500K salary as he is well liked in Boston, an excellent defender and is maybe the fastest guy in the league. If they do trade him, do they know something about his injuries that other teams don’t?
joemoedee… “yeah it has helped so much since Escobrat got traded. very important, no doubt ” — Gonzalez’s .277 average with really solid defense is not the reason why they’ve been losing of late.
Yeah, well, it sure hasn’t helped. Especially since Escobar is hitting .354 BA, .901 OPS, 2HR, 7 RBI…and everyone KNEW he was a better player in the 2nd half of the season. And that Gonzalez’s numbers usually goes down in the 2nd half. Just a stupid, stupid trade.
Cody is now available again. Apparently he was only removed from the market for a few hours before the Marlins realized that they would not get anything when they non-tendered him in the off season. “Executives of one team heard that they could acquire Ross for the right offer, according to Jayson Stark of ESPN.com (on Twitter). 5:14″
Its not just the SB% that is exciting about Ellsbury, but the speed at the top of the order in front of Prado in the 2-spot and Heyward in the 3-spot. Seems like a nice 1,2,3 for years to come. McCann in the 5th spot. All the Braves would need is a 4 hitter. They aren’t going to be able to get it this year, so you just have to make due with Chipper, Glaus, Hinske for now.
and they almost all failed long term. we have almost nobody even close to being ready for the bigs other than Freeman as far as position players are concerned. of course that is not taking into consideration “grittiness” etc
@Gary O: I’d like our chances in the post season with the kind of pitching we have. I like to see Hudson/Jurrjens 1-2 and then deciding whether to use Hanson/Lowe/Medlen depending on the situation

If the Braves could sign Werth in the offseason, I would say that Wren should definitely go for Ellsbury. But that’s not likely to be the case, so Wren needs to jealously guard his assets in order to get that no. 4 hitter at some point this winter.
So, you are saying that you expect a guy who has only played 9 games all year to come to a new league and suddenly be a .300 hitter. Not being realistic.

Ellsbury is fast. McLouth is just a smart base stealer, but not a pure threat to steal a lot of bases.
what long term? when do you people want to win? after the hall of manager retires? You think Fredi is gonna make this team better? We dont have to bring up the entire staff, but the future is right now.
I know…Cody Ross is such an uninspiring move and a really ineffective one as well.
In no way does it even come close to a counter punch to the Oswalt trade and I’m sure we’ll all be sickened as to whom Wren gives to Florida in return if he does indeed trade for him.
You nimrods clamoring for this guy are amazing….it’s been almost 15 yrs since the Braves promoted a solid 1B! Since then we’ve had guys like LaRoche and his even worse hitting, bigger-hole-in-the-swing clone that came after him. Put him in a trade for a good hitting outfielder.
Yes, promote Kimbrel and demote that bum Chavez.
I agree with some of the others…..I just don’t trust Frank Wren. He’s spotty at best in his deals. I mean, the whole Vazquez for Melky+hurt A baller thing was one of the worst trades I’ve heard of since the Cubs dumped Lou Brock!
Remember back 2 or 3 years ago when everyone said that 2010 would be our year ? Well, the year is here. And now I hear people saying 2013 will be our year. Will we always be 3 years away ?
Honestly, I could care less if Cody Ross is available or not. I would rather have Ellsbury to be honest. But, I am resigned to the fact that we aren’t going to do much. Again, if the right player isn’t there, he isn’t there. That being said…
….it’s been almost 15 yrs since the Braves promoted a solid 1B! Since then we’ve had guys like LaRoche and his even worse hitting, bigger-hole-in-the-swing clone that came after him.
what in hell does any of that have to do with Freeman?
Ellsbury would be nice, but I can’t see it happening. Just saw on MLBTR that the red sox are also inquiring about Cody Ross. Unless Ellsbury’s injury is more serious than they’re putting out the Sox wouldn’t give up on him and go for Cody Ross.
Let’s hope this line up we have starts hitting like we know they can. I don’t see a move for Cody Ross improving our team that significantly. Also, for the Marlins to trade in division they’re going to want a nice trade chip. Not worth it.
Go for Ellsbury, if we can’t get him hopefully Wren’s got something up his sleeve without depleting our farm.
The one BIGGEST reason we sent Kimbrel down in the first place was to let him get more reps. The one BIGGEST reason that Chavez is in the ATL is so he can rot.
We don’t need Kimbrel to rot, we need him to get better.

what long term? when do you people want to win? after the hall of manager retires? You think Fredi is gonna make this team better? We dont have to bring up the entire staff, but the future is right now.

I know…Cody Ross is such an uninspiring move and a really ineffective one as well.
In no way does it even come close to a counter punch to the Oswalt trade and I’m sure we’ll all be sickened as to whom Wren gives to Florida in return if he does indeed trade for him.

Ellsbury is fast. McLouth is just a smart base stealer, but not a pure threat to steal a lot of bases. MF
prove it.
anyway all I said was his success rate, nothing else.
Freddie Freeman not the answer at 1st!

Coach did but that’s probably not what you want to hear.
But then he might’ve traded him for Luis Durango who is an even better fit.

We don’t need to make a deal for a reliever. Send Chavez down and bring up Kimbrell

That being said…
Don’t hug too hard Frank!

Category: Over/under on Troy Glaus homers for the rest of the season
Over/under: 6
Same for Alex Gonzalez
Over/under: 4
With all of August and September left, I’ll be hopeful and say Glaus gets a minimum of 7 and AGON gets exactly 4. Hows that?

“Every year” is the answer to both questions. And I’d rather have the organization give that answer than circle a calendar every 4 years.

The one BIGGEST reason we sent Kimbrel down in the first place was to let him get more reps. The one BIGGEST reason that Chavez is in the ATL is so he can rot.
We don’t need Kimbrel to rot, we need him to get better.
