We should disable Glaus and get Freeman’s feet wet. A couple weeks off would do wonders for Troy and his legs. We’d also have a chance to evaluate whether Freeman might help us in the stretch-run. What’s he gonna do, be worse than Troy’s been lately?
For anyone wondering: Kenshin Kawakami does in fact still exist. I personally saw him walk out to the bullpen before today’s game and–get this–saw him THROWING A BASEBALL during the 9th inning. From a mound, no less! I have no clue how good he looked as I was on the complete opposite side of the stadium, but I guess he still can throw if needed.
Hey DOB: I am up here in Montana and don’t get a chance to post too often, but I really appreciate all the information on the goings on down in Atlanta. Had a couple of random questions/observations for you and the regulars: (1) I am driving (yes driving) out to Atlanta next week–taking the kids to the game on Friday night. Since it is the Glavine deal, anyone have any tips on where to (or not to) park, etc? Will have my 92 yr old grandmother who lives in Smyrna, so it should be quite the circus. (2) On our way up to the beach, we are staying in Greenville, NC–is Perkins the bbq joint in Wilson you’ve mentioned in the past? (3) The national media has been hammering clubs on their reliance on young pitchers down the home stretch (Rays, Yanks, Pads, etc)–but I haven’t seen much on the Braves with respect to Hanson and/or Medlen. I am sure I’ve missed someone chatter on the blog, so sorry for beating a potentially dead horse on that one. (4) You should have seen Metallica when they rolled thru last year. I caught them in Boise–on the rail no less–and they really brought it. A Danish band named Volbeat opened–really good–kind of hard rock/metal meets rockabilly. (5) Thanks for getting me on to the Shield. Was a big Wire fan–liked that series more–but Shield was really good. DIdn’t realize that the guy who directed the first Wire episode (and played the editor who gets booted in the last season) directed the last Shield episode. Anyway, thank you (and Carroll) for all that you guys do.
Could we have gotten Ryan Ludwick? Well, obviously the Cardinals wanted a starting pitcher they could plug into their rotation NOW. I’m sure then didn’t want KK. If they were thinking of Lowe, the salary scared them off. Hudson, Hansen and JJ are off limits. That leaves Medlin–were we willing to deal him for Ludwick? If the Cardinals wanted him, we should have. We could bring Minor up, plus the 5th starter gets skipped sometimes.
I gues the Cardinals didn’t want him.
Ankiel gets hurt a lot, TnBrian. In fact, it may very well be that an Ankiel injury is the thing that gets McLouth back to the bigs to shut up all them haterz.
As for melky and hinske laughing it up, if that was escobar, he would be roasted way way more.

Bobbi’s boys… As long as everyone can get along in the club house and hold hands!
Coach and his love for Posednik. Those numbers are better than Ankiel’s for sure. Can’t argue with that. The leadoff thing, I dont know about though. Prado and Infante are just fine there. And you think Bobby would let Posednik run like that anyways?
This blog has simply become way too depressing to read. I have never seen more negative, whiney folks in my life. Some of you people make my 4 year old look mature. We gave up Jesse Chavez and Gregor Blanco, people! In return, we take a flier on Ankiel, who certainly has some pop and has a good glove and Farnsy, who has been damn good this year.
You wanted Ludwick, did you? How bad? Bad enough to give up Meds and more? At worst, Ankiel will play much better defense than Melky and have similar numbers at the plate.
TnBRian, Prado is gone for a while, Infante’s value lies in his versatility. Now he has to man 2B full time and lead off. We shall see how well he holds up. But good point about Bobby, the old man would put the brakes on Podsednik if he were a Brave.
Chop Chop, Derek Lowe can throw his arm out in his next start, a guy who’s never been on the DL. Anybody can go down with an injury. Some are more injury prone, I know, but I don’t look at it that way.
Does anybody give a rip that “The Milkman” thinks it’s funny that his stupendous error help blow another VERY winnable game? I can’t image Diaz or Prado EVER laughing about such an idiotic & costly error. That guy should find a comfortable spot on the bench!
Coach, yeah, a week or maybe a little longer is what they wrote on Prado. He hopefully won’t be out that long.
I won’t argue with any of y’all getting on Gonzalez. Man alive he looks awful at the plate. He looks like an overmatched rookie up there. He really does.
Glaus might be done. Hate saying it, but he looks damn near crippled. Shame because he’s only 33 or so. I’m also starting to wonder if he was heavily into the steroids and now it’s taking its toll on his body. 33 year olds shouldn’t be this bad off.

The only thing I can congratulate Frank Wren on is this…….
He stubbornly held onto all his young starting pitching. Which is smart in the long run.
————————————-
And I am glad he did. I think we had this discussion the other with other folks. While this maybe Bobbi’s final season, it is not my last as a braves fan. I dont want to make moves just for him. We have a great base to continue success to get a WS title in the future.
No but I agree with Tn Brian in that before the season I told my brother Tn Mitch that I suspected Glaus’ numbers were steroids related & now I wonder if he returned to using them during the month of June only to go without all of July. Bringing up Freeman may be best option.
Also, anyone else notice that on the defensive side, we’ve got a fat guy playing in left field (HInske who currently should be playing 1st base for the anemic Glaus) and another fat guy who could care less playing in center field?
In the past, cabravesfan, if I didn’t see you on the blog, I wouldn’t say hi, figuring I’d wait until I see you. You always seemed to pop out with a “hi, Tom”.
So lately, I’ve been just saying hi to you guys on my first post. However, you two haven’t been around when I have, and I’ve been saying “hi” to cyber-space. So I figured tonight I’d wait and bang, there you are and I’m in trouble.
I don’t know, TnBrian. I just don’t get the Ankiel part of this. Seems like the Royals really wanted to get him the hell out of there, doesn’t it?
He’s only played in 45 games between AAA and the bigs this year. His numbers in both places weren’t exactly eye-popping. I understand that he’s a complete roll of the dice, which is exactly the kind of half-measure that Wren shouldn’t have been forced (if he was forced) to take. In this case, I’ve got to believe that somebody told him that he couldn’t spend more than X amount of dollars on deadline acquisitions. Think about it. If the Red Sox had acquired Ankiel and Farnsworth at the deadline, could you imagine the snickers? They’d be justified. The same holds true for the Yankees, especially after the wonderful time Farnsworth had there the last time around. They’d look at Ankiel and think, “Gee, this guy hasn’t done anything since 2008. He’s 31. What the…?” What if the Phillies had done this? You know, Victorino’s hurt. Trying to add another bat. Getting that solid veteran arm for the pen? Any team’s fans would wonder.
We don’t live in a bubble here, but we’ve got to be able to step outside of our fan loyalty to take a look at moves that are made and judge them at face value. There is absolutely nothing in what Ankiel has done in the last two seasons to inspire confidence in his ability to make a significant impact in our lineup. Not a damn thing. It’s true that, as far as we can tell, we didn’t give up much, but if that’s the most positive thing about the trade, what the hell did we make the trade for?
I hope Ankiel kills it here. It sure would help. I don’t care so much about Farnsworth. He’s a means to an end right now and we got some money to help with his salary. The bat is what I care the most about. It is not apparent that the need was fulfilled by this trade.
Rick Ankiel hit 38 homeruns in 2006 for St.Louis. DUMBFOUND
No, he didn’t.he wasn’t even in the bigs that year. he hit 36 homers total over two seasons 2007 and 2008. . well as close to two seasons as he has ever gotten with all his injuries.
he ain’t all that much but he’s better than what we had. and Farnsie should be a good pickup.
Coach: the offense should not depend on Glaus. One of the mistakes made by mid-July was that Bobby Cox insisted on fitting a square pegged Glaus into the round hole of needed 4th hole productivity. Cox was tardy in recognizing McLouth’s defficiencies, compounded by those of Glaus.
In the absence of consistent power as of the second week of June, Cox did not have the luxury of standing pat with a lineup that included the now far away spectre of Glaus’ four weeks of brilliant productivity in May. He was hurt sometime in early June, and rather than spell Glaus, or place him on the DL, Cox decided to go old-school, to the detriment of the team.
Now, the answers are obvious. For better or worse, Ankiel is our starting CF. Diaz and Cabrera must platoon in LF. Heyward, sore thumb and all, is our RF to the end. Hinske has to take 1B tomorrow – and for the rest of the season. Infante and Conrad represent better health than the injured Prado and the fading Jones; they must be used with greater frequency.
Jones’ and Glaus’ greatest value now should be on the bench. As August starts, Cox needs to take an enlightened approach that depends more on health and a hot hand than old tired recipes that do not work anymore, like Jones in the third spot or Glaus playing.
And, of course, the pitching has to be a near-perfect seven from the starters every start, and flawless bullpen execution the rest of the way.
Well, I didn’t get to watch today’s game as life had me busy but I did watch last nights game. Glaus produced six straight ground outs. Which spoke volumes. His swing and especially the timing of it is way offfffff. Glaus is hitting everything of the end of the bat and almost all the momentum is gone by the time he makes contact. When Troy is on, he lifts the ball, but right now the 1st sacker is driving everything straight into the ground. He’s way out in front of ball and the leg lift ain’t helping at all. Dude is a mess right now and needs to sit.
Unfortunately Cox is making the same exact mistake we saw with Francoeur, AJ, KJ and many others. Cox is his own worst enemy at beating himself. hopefully the pitching can carry this team because their manager sure as hell won’t.
The blog mentality: Let’s trade Melky ( to Toronto) for laughing at his horrible throw. And why we’re at it, Henske has to go too, for chuckling along with Melky. Good thing we got Ankiel because we’re going to be short two outfielders.
We went out to dinner last night so we were not around for the game…I suppose I can forgive you just this once, seeing as how I have no idea when you will be back
I do however with some of you who said if Wren could have gotten Ludwick, He should’ve ! But I can live with Ankiel. I think he has upward value. A fantasy player value.
you ever get the feeling that maybe some of the Braves wouldnt mind if Chipper would go ahead and retire with his critcism of the other players while all the while not producing himself and playing horrible defense.
Melky may be a bit of a klutz at times, but I would never accuse him of not caring. The guy always hustles.
As for his laughing. Who here knows how they would react if they did something so foolish in front of 40,000 people? I could see myself laughing as a way to try and shrug it off. But then, I’m not perfect like many on this blog and actually felt bad for Melky when I saw what happened with the throw.
I was on here before and after you guys. I know you went to dinner because I scrolled through what I didn’t see. I have to be back late next week. I have something going on that requires me to get back to town. I won’t know exactly when until Monday.
Are you guys getting settled in with the new place? Or is that an e-mail question?
Ah, cab, I was supposed to add that when I read that you guys went to dinner, I was wondering, what Braves’ fans go out to dinner during a Braves’ game. Geeeeez
We are mostly settled Still have things that need to find places but most everything is put away…still getting used to taking the dog out every few hours, but VJ handles most of that
I assume you will be in and out until after labor day? VJ and I both always look for you to pop up- we were surprised to see you appear during the game yesterday (we scrolled while we watched on TiVo…and we are used to seeing you later at night then that ) Sorry we missed you! (By the way, you aren’t really afraid of little ol’Soph, are you??)
What a freaking mistake that trade is looking like, blows, but now not only do we have to find replacements in the OF, 3B, 1B, we also have to start looking SS. Dumb move. Grow some thick skin fans, I can deal with attitudes.

If you say so, i guess he wouldnt since he doesnt have the range to make an error.
The man has been hurt. Give him a chance. I can’t understand that some of you don’t think he’s not better than Melky. Unbelievable. Now, If Wren could have gotten Podsenick or Ludwick, I see your arguement.

TN Jeff,
Melky may be a bit of a klutz at times, but I would never accuse him of not caring.
