jeffrey–I wouldn’t want that, to be like the Yankees. It’s nice to see your team succeed because they’re shrewd and make good personnel decisions vs. buying everything. It’s more fun to follow an actual baseball team vs. a fantasy team.
Will Cox ever pull a starter after 6 or change the batting order so that the weakest hitters do not bat 3 and 5?? How many must be left on base???? Need to keep Infante and Prado hitting together and move Glauss and Chipper down.
DOB–I dont know what they are payiing you to do this thing–but 7000 plus hits since yesterday afternoon is pretty impressive—I bet the rest of the paper combined hasnt had that many LOL– maybe its time to renegotiate your deal!
So, whatever your feelings on the trade, I still think the fact that we have what amounts to a 24 man roster needs to be addressed. The bullpen looks wore out because they are. They are thin because Lou Diamond seldom pitched and KK NEVER pitches.
I can agree that this trade makes us marginally better, but we could have “traded” KK for Kimbrel or Marek and had a bigger upgrade. Kimbrel and Chavez > KK and Farnsworth.
Like this trade better than the Escobar trade. Especially since I’m not convinced that Collins will ever be more than a LOOGY. Only negatives I see about this trade is Ankiel strikeouts (but he is a legit upgrade) and how Farnsworth will be used. Either way we officially have the best bullpen in baseball. Liked Blanco a lot hopefully he gets a chance to be a full-time player.
Jeffrey, I said after the game was tied 2-2 that JJ should be taken out of the game. Guess what happened next ? 3 Runs scored. I mean, it was just so obvious that JJ was losing it and needed to be taken out.
can’t get rid of KK now. He’s the only one in the pen that can go longer than 2 innings. He doesn’t get used because are bullpen is deep with 7/8/9 guys and we don’t get blown out because of the starting pitching. And we don’t blow people out because we don’t score.
WOW …thanks jeffrey d …sorta blows my mind, if ya know where I am coming from …THANKS for the confrim …weird …never would have thought …and that is DEF ??, wow …lol
A day off? Dude needs at least two weeks off. DL Glaus, call up Freeman
And I hope they DL Prado. I don’t want him playing hero, rushing back, and sucking, trying to play through it.
I’m getting a little tired of guys playing through injuries for weeks before someone on the team realizes, wow, he’s not doing too good, maybe he’s injured.
Hinske at 1B, Melky in LF, Ankiel in CF and we can claim to have made a legit improvement in our defense, and give Glaus a day or three off.
I dont think we have any position players to spare, or a player in the minors who fits the bill, but I think this team does have a need for a speed guy, and Bobby actually seemed to enjoy using Blanco’s speed late in games there for a few weeks.
Braves2010, I think the Braves will be able to sign a core group of players of McCann, Freeman, Heyward and Prado. But, only if we have cheap position replacements for 3B, SS, a couple of Outfielders and a balance between a few starting pitchers that are well paid with some that have not reached arbitration and a core of bullpen pitchers that are cheap. The probable trading of a Hanson, Medlen or Jurjjens should provide one position player. The team has drafted heavily for the middle and corner infield spots and our Minor league teams are flooded with potential bullpen options. So, the Braves just have to find that balance in payroll that allows them to keep the most important players and changing the pieces around them. Similar to keeping Maddox, Glavine, Smoltz and Chipper thru the prime of their careers!
JJ had a good game going. Wonder if its just a coincidence that he lost it the inning after taking that pitch to his left elbow?
At any rate, no better time than tomorrow to put one in the ribs of the Reds starter. No…. actually try to hit his arm, hand or wrist. That seems to be where the Reds are going. A team can go all season and not have a pitcher HBP. Is it just a chance that the Braves have two starters HBP in back to back games? Seems to have been effective today cause JJ was cruising till the inning after his HBP.
Tomorrow, we should break Farnsworth in. This guy is a Beast in a wooly should it break out! When he was with the Cubs, he started AND ENDED a number of fights! He’s good for that even if he doesn’t record a single out from the mound. He’s like an enforcer in hockey.
I’m serious. Braves need to get some payback for getting two starters HBP in consecutive starts. No way that’s an accident.
Posted this to the trade article, but figured it was worth posting again here:
If you ignore the 1/23 slide Ankiel went into when he was trying to play hurt, he’s actually hit .333 in 69 at bats this year. And he’d have an OBP of .389.
I’m not expecting that out of him, but people who think he’s not an improvement are being ridiculous. We got rid of Chavez, we got a legitimate reliever, we got a power hitting OF who’s capable of playing CF (honestly, he was probably the only one we could’ve gotten who fits that bill), and we got 2 guys who are reasonably priced.
And to top it off, we gave up nothing of real value to our team now or our future.
There’s 3 different ways we can use KK: 1) when our starter gets shelled and is pulled and we’re down 9-0 in the second. 2) when we’re winning a laugher 12-0 in the late innings and 3) when we’re in extra innings and we’re out of relief pitchers and he has to go the duration,
Actually, I don’t have the same negative opinion most of you do about KK. He numbers not all that bad. He’d be starting on a lot of staffs. And he’s pitched a several gems for us.
RHR- “speaking of getting hit, man was JJ hot when he got beaned or what? you have to admit, it does look suspicious after they hit meds last night and got him out of the game. weren’t hitting JJ so they threw at him? thats phillies level bush league right there.”
Yeh, you know how it is you can’t let those pitchers go leaning out over the plate, you got to brush’ em back every now and then. LOL! I’m not buying it.
just talked to my buddy out in KC, he told me good luck with Ankiel playing 30+ games for the rest of the year. said he tends to be hot for a week or so, then ice cold for 3 weeks..when healthy..he also said Farnsworth has battled back problems all year..maybe they’ll both be National League kinda guys… i don’t think this is the trade that gets us over the hump and into October..man, Glaus is going to have to get it together, would someone tell him its May all over again…
I like the trade. A RH bat would have been better, but still a clear upgrade for CF. Plus, we’re going to have some strong arms in the OF with Ankiel and Heyward.
I havent read all the analysis about Ankiel and his role in the outfied. but am I wrong in assuming that we might have a platoon in CF and LF because of this. Ankiel/Melky for CF and Hinske/Diaz for LF or are we going to see Ankiel as an everyday CF? I ask because Ankiel’s splits dont look too good against LHPs, Avg, OBP and slugging drop off significantly. There is ofcourse a way in which Melky can play both CF and LF, but that would entail seeing him out there everyday – not very pleasant.
There is going to be a lot more flexibility though and runners will fear the arm much more. Going from a CF who was afraid to throw to a guy who can gun down most anyone from the wall is a big upgrade.
Playoffs!!!! – regardless of what you think of KK, it does not matter. It also does not matter what anyone on this blog thinks of him. Bobby will NOT play him. He has pitched once in the last month. Its better today than yesterday, because he is now our last guy in the bullpen, instead of sharing that spot with Chavez, but its very clear that nobody has any confidence in him, and Bobby would rather watch the arms fall off the guys he trusts than trot KK out there.
.573, I figured. More of the making fun of other people’s spelling I guess but I’m not attentive enough to find where it originated from, 73 pages and 7K comments will do that.
““It allows us to fill our two most important needs, and it also didn’t force us to give up any of our top young pitching prospects,” Braves general manager Frank Wren said. “We really like Collins, so it’s not to say he’s not a good looking young prospect.
“But I think everybody knows who our top starting pitchers are in the minor leagues, and we were able to hold onto those guys.”
If the Braves did the following I’d be happy and would think they will definitely win the NL east.
DL Troy Glaus, maybe rest is all he needs to get back on track. Call up Freddy Freeman. Release Kenshin Kawakami or send him to AAA. Call up Mike Minor. Send Medlen to the bullpen.
2B Martin Prado(when he heals)
RF Jason Heyward
3B Chipper Jones
C Brian McCann
LF Eric Hinske/Matt Diaz
1B Freddy Freeman
SS Alex Gonzalez
CF Rick Ankiel/Melky Cabrera
With that starting 5 and specially that bullpen their should be no problem.
If KK didnt feel insulted by the move to the bullpen, that is understandable. But seeing how he didnt even come in to pitch before Chavez, must be humiliating as hell for him. Also he cant easily ramp-up and get his arm ready for a starting role in case Medlen’s innings become too much, he is worthless for the Braves right now. He might be around with the Braves next season – if not a ML team, possibly be sold to a Japanese team or something.
yeah I try to stay away from the spelling thing, they’re either doing it is a joke or they actually spell that way … and most of the times it’s hard to tell which one it is
I wouldn’t mind seeing them try Minor as the 5th starter and put Meds back in the pen. His ERA is a run or so less when he pitches there and his lack of a solid third pitch seems to indicate the main reason why. I have always thought he will be more valuable as a 7th or 8th inning guy.
I wonder what KK thinks of not being used at all. Seeing Chavez come in before him must’ve been humiliating.Even if Meds gets sent to the BP for innings’ sake KK is never going to be ready as a SP. He is most likely a goner in the offseason.
GTax, the guy is having an awesome season in AAA, specially lately, he could easily be called up and do a better job than what Troy is currently doing. 295AVG 14HR, and 62RBI’s, without striking out a lot, and getting his walks.
BravesFanChris, It would suprise me very highly if we see Chipper in the line up tomorrow, as it is one of his multiple days off in the week. Probably not going to happen.
The only question I still have is…why no play for Ludwick? Again, I think it was because the Braves never, ever had any intention on putting J-Hey in center.

Didn’t know about JJ getting pegged.
Seems pretty weird the Reds had 2 HBP’s back to back on Braves pitchers.
I wanna win really bad now. I agree, put Farnsworth out there tomorrow and dare them!

Glaus needs a couple of days off. Either popping everything up or grounding out weakly.

baseball needs more people charging the mound. it seems like you rarely see brawls anymore
That’s because if you frown or throw your bat you get eaten alive

DOB added a Wren quote to his trade story:

Tomas, that is quite the overhaul. Is Freeman ready to be called up? Sounds like Glaus could use a bit of a break and rest up.
