Troy Glaus is in a major slump. I think it’s time to do something. DL him, call up Freeman. And while you’re at it release Kawakami or send him to AAA, and call up Mike Minor, send Medlen to the bullpen.

Imagine that pitching staff
SP Tim Hudson
SP Jair Jurrjens
SP Tommy Hanson
SP Derek Lowe
SP Mike Minor
RHP Kris Medlen
RHP Peter Moylan
LHP Eric O’Flaherty
RHP Takashi Saito
RHP Kyle Farnsworth
LHP Johnny Venters
LHP Billy Wagner

That’s pretty good starting 5 and an absolutely nasty bullpen. And I assure you everybody will stay fresh because it just gives Bobby so many options.

Hey, all you so called Braves Fans. You do understand, this team , due to our ownership( Liberty Media), has a self induced payroll of around $87 Million. The Padres, Rays, Rangers and Reds are all below the Braves in payroll. If, you notice, all these teams have one thing in common. THEY are built on home grown prospects, smart trades and intelligent free agent acquisitions.
GET IT IN your heads! We are not the Yankees, Phillies, Red Sox, Cardinals, White Sox, Tigers, Angels or up till this year the Dodgers. That will not change or likely improve until the Braves are sold, sometime in the future.
If, many of you had your way, the Braves would have traded Minor, Freeman, Teheren, Delgado, Vizcaino, Beachy, Kimbrell, etc. for Adam Dunn, Cliff Lee and Corey Hart. All for JUST a BETTER chance and winning a World Series. These prospects are the ones that if utilized and added to properly will form the foundation of a team that will compete for World Seires for the next 10 years. Trading for Hart, Lee and Dunn would leave us with 1 year of Hart next year and without the payroll to resign Lee and Dunn.
I will be the first to yell and scream, if the Braves become a BIG PAYROLL team in the future and make economical safe moves to better the team. But, the Yankees, Red Sox, Phillies Etc. can trade as many top prospects as the like, BECAUSE the can just go sign a high priced top free agent to replace them. Do you not learn through history? We signed Derek Lowe and Kawakami to big contracts and are unable to spend to make the team better because of that(and the McLouth trade)
We need to nuture our very best prospects, build a extremely deep farm system and trade the players to replenish that become too expensive to resign (possibly Hanson, Jurrjens ) in 3 years to add young valuable position players to Minor, Teheren, Delgado Etc. and our core position and bullpen players of McCann, Prado, Heyward, Freeman , Venters, Kimbrell, O’flaherty, Dunn Etc.
But, GUESS WHAT, we are still competing NOW. First Place in the NL East and Leading the Wild Card. So cheer for the team and quit your BI***in!

Mike Minor has been outstanding in AAA. 5 starts 31.2 IP 4-1 with a 1.99ERA, 35 strikeouts, and 10 walks.

In 20 minor league starts(15 in AA, 5 in AAA) he has pitched 118.2IP 6-7 with a 3.49ERA, 144 strikeouts, and 44 walks. That’s nasty with all those strikeouts. He reminds me of Cole Hamels, with a 90-94mph fastball and an excellent change up.

Have to say that I wasn’t too impressed with slick Rick and the farnz but we didn’t give up any of our best prospects or kmed. I’m real happy with this trade because we got another bullpen piece that can get some outs, and we got an upgrade to blanco. Also something to think about…we don’t have to pick up slick rick’s option paving the way for an ellsbury or someone else not mentioned to play CF. I applaud Wren for keeping the awesome farm and getting an upgrade, although slight, to what we had before the deadline.

Ernie Johnson puts me to sleep. He doesn’t make the game as exciting as Chip does. The only bad thing about Chip is he expects a homer everytime the ball is in the air, probably an effect of having called all those homers for Sosa and McGwire(when he faced chicago).

The Braves are not the Yankees–or for that matter even the Phillies with respect to payroll, attendance etc. and prb never will be. I am not suggesting that you have to have a $150-200 mil payroll to win championships–but less face it–it helps to have a lot of resources. As long as we are stuck in the middle of the pack in terms of payroll the Braves will always have challenges with regard to stacking their roster the way most of us fans would like. I am not certain this team is good enought to get to the WS–but I do think they are good enought to get into the playoffs–and sometimes odd things happen in the playoffs….ie, the Marlins in 2003 and the Cardinals a few years ago.
The thing that I just don’t get by so many on here is the notion that Cox, Wren, JS are just hapless idiots who dont care about winning or who are not trying—-thats just simply BS–no matter how you slice it. They have to work within the paramaters they are given by the people signing the checks–thats true in any business–isnt it? I think most resonable folks would argue that given the payroll restrictions that actually started what 10 years ago ago or more when Ted sold the team that they have not done badly—but what does it take—for Cox to come out and say I dont want to win–I am stupid and I do not belong int he dugout?…..or for Wren to say that he is in incapable moron who lacks the drive and knowledge to be a major league GM. How many other teams over the years do some of you guys think might have liked to have had Bobby as a manager—I think he stayed here all these years because this is where he wanted to be—same for JS and now Wren.
I would love to see 3-4 WS banners hanging from the Ted–but how many do you think the Yankees would have if they had worked within a budget like most other major league teams—would Cashman look all that smart if he had an annual budget of $85-90 million—-thats what A-Rod, Jeter, Marianno and Tex make–forget the other 21 guys.
If there were 3 million plus in the stands every year that would help —is that the fault of the manager or the GM also. How many Ws rings do you think Joe Torre would have if he had been on a team that had a more normal payroll and a more normal owner—how many has he won since the left the Bronx?
All I am saying is a little perspective from some of you people——I have been as disappointed in the last few years as anyone on this blog I dare say–but at the end of the day I am a Braves fan–I have lived and died with them for 35 years since I was kid. But all the personal attacks on people who have brought the only success this franchise has known since it has been in Atlanta is just hard for me to understand.

“Hopefully, Ankiel can find Gonzalez’s missing offense, cause I heard alot about it before Escobar was traded.”

As opposed to Escobar’s .618 OPS? The problem with this bit you’re doing is that it requires two things: ignorance of Escobar’s 2010 performance of a Brave and the overlooking of Gonzalez’s gastritis. BTW, with his 0-4 game today, Escobar is now for 2 for his last 13 as a Blue Jay. His July OPS, even tossing in that hot streak the first few days in Toronto, is .743 as opposed to Gonzalez is at .750…with gastritis.

You may now return to your mindless ranting.

“Have to say that I wasn’t too impressed with slick Rick and the farnz but we didn’t give up any of our best prospects or kmed.”

A poster earlier today did an exceptional job of breaking down the deal. While I have enjoyed the comical aspect of the same people complaining about our overworked bullpen last night complaining about Bobby leaving JJ in too long today (seriously, those posts should come with a two drink minimum), as I said last night, our bullpen looks exhausted. Even if we can escape an inning with Chavez last night, get him a win, and ship him out of town for Kyle Farnsworth, I’m all for that.

Farnsworth, for all of his overhead, is a legit flamethrower. The opportunity cost is that we give up the promise of Tim Collins for it, and we probably let Farnsworth go in the offseason rather than pay him $5.25 million. That’s the part I regret but if Collins seals the deal, we have to do it since Ankiel is better than our other options. I wanted Willingham and Ellsbury would have worked, but the fact that we fill out our 25 man roster as completely as is possible in this day and age without giving up any of best organizational arms is an achievement.

I will be curious if we tweak further in August or if this is it. Looking at our roster now, none of the names makes me cringe although I think Glaus is in the same spot Heyward was last month. He needs to be recovering on the DL. Why we don’t seem to want to do that, I don’t know.

noleeeee

July 31st, 2010

nothing buys you a guaranteed championship. but a huge payroll puts you in the middle of getting into the post season almost every year which is the greatest single requirement to winning a championship. Remind me how many times the Yanks have failed to reach post season the last 15 years?
Once you get there it is a crap shoot for every team, but are you suggesting an extra 140 million dollars wouldn’t make the Braves a little bit better team this year? hope not….

Steve from OH

But with as low as payroll is and with the prospects coming thru the system, they might hold on to the club. They’re probably making a good profit as is and stand to make more $$ as Heyward matures and the Braves move into their window for winning.

Playoffs, that would be so awesome to have an entire channel devoted entirely to the Braves. They could show old Braves games, and a bunch of other stuff.

Can you imagine if Gates was an owner? He could purchase every free agent and have the single A team stocked with Major Leaguers. The rest of the clubs would have to put together a team of ragtag misfits who didn’t get along at first, but by the end of the season, they understand the true value of hustle and sportsmanship.

The Padres inquired about Jacoby Ellsbury before picking up Ryan Ludwick, but were told he’s not available according to ESPN Boston’s Gordon Edes

yes jeffrey, and they would bring their kids to the clubhouse and have a ferris wheel in the bullpen. it would be a fun team anyway, lots of smiles.
