What? Most of the team is 32 or younger, including several in their early to mid 20’s. I’m not complaining about having old men Hudson and Wagner on the team. Any manager would play Chipper Jones. But yeah, Lowe is terrible.
It sounds like to me the Braves management is ok with just making the playoffs, and then losing in either the 1st or 2nd round. This is not a WS Caliber team. This team is no better than the teams from 2000-2005 that won 95-100 games every year and lost in the 1st round every year.
DAN JURIK has enjoyed his first inning of work in DANVILLE after his promotion from GULF COAST where he started five games, pitched 28.2 innings and had a 2.20 ERA.
The cream of this year’s hitting crop seem to be 1B ‘BIG JIM’ GATTIS at .360 BA in 113 AB’s with an .883 OPS, and recently promoted RF DAVID ROHM batting .315 combined at GCL (75) and DANVILLE (58) in 133 AB’s.

You guys are talking like winning the World Series is as simple as pouring a bowl of cereal.
———————————————-
The Marlins shure as heck made it look easy, and they are always a mess.
Jeffrey, I never said winning the WS is simple but it can’t be as hard as the Braves made it seem in the 90s and 00’s !!! 14 playoff appearances and 1 WS to show for it !! Yankees won 5 WS in that time period, Blue Jays won 2, Red Sox won 2, Marlins won 2. Braves couldn’t even win as many WS as the Marlins in the last 20 years ???
Something just isn’t right when you have the kind of pitching we have had over the last 20 years and only 1 WS to show for it. That is just unacceptable.
JOD – I guess the question is would you rather have a sustained level of greatness over two decades, or two elite seasons in the middle of a bunch of losing seasons?
BravesFan2010 …right there is no diff in payroll ‘tween the Braves and the yanks …give me a break …of course that has no effect on winning and losing …
Jeffrey, i’d take 2 elite season in the middle of a bunch of losing seasons. To me, at least when you have losing season year after year you dont have your heart broken year after year. It’s really all about winning the WS. Fans that are satisfied with just making the playoffs are not true fans.
whats the word on the trade? i missed getting the blog reaction but was wishing i was here when i saw it pop up on the screen. i like blanco but i don’t think he was ever going to be much more than an injury call up for the braves, maybe now he’ll get to be on a major league team every day. was surprised to see farny’s name, after all the attitude and ‘braves way’ talk going around yunel but i’d guess he’s an upgrade over chavez, as far as talent goes.
Rick Ankiel is hot since coming off the DL. Since coming off the DL, 8 games he is batting 366, 1HR, 6 RBI’s and 2 walks. For the season he has a 784OPS that’s very solid. He has a great arm and more range than Melky. Melky’s OPS is 694, Troy Glaus OPS 772(even lower after today.). So it’s a pretty good upgrade.
Downside, another lefthander, and he is awful against lefties with a 172AVG. Maybe a platoon with Melky who hits better against lefties.
And Kyle Farnsworth is the big acquisition. It improves an already good bullpen. There is only one pitcher in the bullpen now that doesn’t belong, Kenshin Kawakami.
As I get older, I think about the fact that the Braves had a hell of time just getting to the Fall Classic. There is no shame in losing in the World Series, but if you’re in the playoffs almost every season, I think that being in the World Series is the goal. The Braves only did that five out of fourteen straight playoff appearances. Since they were the only NL team pulling off that kind of run, the resulting disappointment continues to linger. This is why so many fans were desperate for Wren to make a big splash and announce to the world that the Braves were not going to eff around in 2010. While it’s true that the Braves could conceivably win a World Series without that splash having been made, it just kinda takes the starch out of some of the fans who really want to be able to puff out their chest and brag on their club.

JOD – I guess the question is would you rather have a sustained level of greatness over two decades, or two elite seasons in the middle of a bunch of losing seasons?

No question about it, two elite seasons… What does two decades of divison play do for you if you do nothing with them?
Chip Caray only makes me want to throw things at the TV. Kevin Millar makes me want to strangle puppies. Chip is the lesser of two evils, for sure, but it’s just to save the puppies!!
i hope steve and scoots were here with their chests all puffed out when melky crapped the bed. wouldn’t expect anything less as i would most certainly do the same.
I think Atlanta sports fans in general have a reason to be bitter with our lack of championships. Falcons, Braves, Hawks, Thrashers, etc. only 1 Championship in 45 years. Atlanta was named the 2nd most miserable sports city in the country, only Seattle was named more miserable.

DAMN JOD –I’m just tired of the same ol BS that Coxie pulls late in the game.
I know we won last night , but tell me the chances ( % wise with Chavez pitching) and the game on the line.
——————————————–
I hear you man, next year we get to purge this club of the senile old school ways of playing ball. The game has changed, but Bobby hasnt. Good for some situations, but bad for most.
i’d take 2 elite season in the middle of a bunch of losing seasons.
Only one team is going to win the world series every year, so if my team isn’t going to be that one team, I’d still rather them have a really good season than a bad one. The Braves had their share of elite teams during the run, but they also had some teams that were lucky to make the playoffs.

I love Cox, but I am SO glad he’s gone after this year. We need change on this team. No more Chipper either.
———————————
Like Bobby, Chipper’s time has past. Unless he has found the magic elixer in that snuff, then he is done this year.
RHR, I think unelss the player is just overly ridiculous talent can make up for some pissiness(don’t know if thats a word but i’m tired of using attitude and pouty). If Esco was still raking this year he’s probably is still here. It was the combination of the two that got him traded, still don’t like the trade but it is what it is. Braves are realist though. When you have the talent, a lot of other stuff can be overlooked. They may end up regretting the fact that they gave up on Esco to soon and for to little.
Oh and to beat everyone to the punch, here is my disclaimer. Just my opinion folks to one poster on this topic. No need to respond, remind me about the “tude” and yada yada yada…..
Sure Roman, I still follow the Braves even when they suck. At least I don’t have to worry about getting my heart broken though. I have terrible memories of 2003, but I don’t remember much about 2007.
I think the two guys acquired are definite upgrades, as we were reminded by Cabrera’s misadventure today. Farnsworth is another power arm that allows Braves to have great matchups now not just in 7th-9th, but even 6th-9th innings when necessary, and to not have to use Saito back-to-back often, if at all. Their bullpen is really formidable after O’Flaherty returns.

I think people are waking up to how awful the trade is starting to turn out to be… The Braves danced too quick at the voice of Boobi.
Two good looking pitching prospects are doing well this season in the DSL, starter ‘SECOND’ BRICENO (6-3, 2.67 ERA) and reliefer ‘IGGY’ GERONIMO (SV 6, 0.65 ERA).
BRICENO has been out 9 times, 54.0 IP, 39 H, 16 ER, 13 BB, 50 SO, 0.96 WHIP. He also has one hold and a save in four relief stints. SEGUNDO leads the staff in IP. The league is batting .201 against him.
GERONIMO has 16 appearances, 27.2 IP, 14 H, 2 ER, 6 BB, 26 SO, 0.72 WHIP with 14 games finished. The league is batting .151 off him.
Bartholomew, maybe all those Braves teams from 1991-2005 were just not built for a short series ? Is that the reason why we only won 1 WS ? THen again, we had Maddux, Glavine, Smoltz, Avery, etc. And I always thought that having that kind of pitching is what was most important in a short series.
The Braves only did that five out of fourteen straight playoff appearances
But you know how many other teams can say they’ve been to 5 World Series in the past 20 years? Only one….the Yankees (duh). I’m not saying that Bobby Cox hasn’t made his share of mistakes, but complaining that we’ve “only” won one World Series, and “only” been to five World Series is akin to the rich teenager saying he “only” gets to take the Lexus out this weekend because the Lamborghini is in the shop.
It’s not easy getting to the World Series, and all of our successes and failures are in the past. It seems pointless to argue/complain about all that. I mean, does anybody really care anymore that the Diamondbacks won the World Series nine years ago? Or that the Astros made it to the World Series in 2005?
Jeffrey, success is judged by WS titles. So, the Diamondbacks have been just as successful as the Braves in the last 20 years and the Marlins have been more successful.
DOB …thanks for your thoughts on the trade …btw I agree 100% …but as a disclaimer, I think you are the master of MLB beat scribes …YOU are why i come here ….
Yes RG, still friends. I don’t mind Millar. But Chip…..if I lived on a boat, Chip would make me want to jump overboard. The worst for me is when the other team gets a hit and runners score, and Chip announces it with that defeated tone of his
Base hit, left field. One run is in. Two runs are in…

Have to to give Wren a C – for the deadline. Our BIGGEST need was a bat, but he gets a really good closer and a alright C
Farnsworth has recorded seven saves in the last five seasons, but I’m sure he’ll be a really good closer for us.

whats the word on the trade? i missed getting the blog reaction but was wishing i was here when i saw it pop up on the screen. i like blanco but i don’t think he was ever going to be much more than an injury call up for the braves, maybe now he’ll get to be on a major league team every day. was surprised to see farny’s name, after all the attitude and ‘braves way’ talk going around yunel but i’d guess he’s an upgrade over chavez, as far as talent goes.

There is only one pitcher in the bullpen now that doesn’t belong, Kenshin Kawakami.

jeffrey d,
As I get older, I think about the fact that the Braves had a hell of time just getting to the Fall Classic.

I think Atlanta sports fans in general have a reason to be bitter with our lack of championships. Falcons, Braves, Hawks, Thrashers, etc. only 1 Championship in 45 years. Atlanta was named the 2nd most miserable sports city in the country, only Seattle was named more miserable.

i’d take 2 elite season in the middle of a bunch of losing seasons.
Only one team is going to win the world series every year, so if my team isn’t going to be that one team, I’d still rather them have a really good season than a bad one. The Braves had their share of elite teams during the run, but they also had some teams that were lucky to make the playoffs.
