I agree “no more old players” If something comes up to really improve this team for the long run, then do it. Don’t piss away our base to try to steal a championship for Cox & Chipper because it won’t work. This team has had some numbing offensive stretches (like the one we are in now), but has also shown some inspired play. Desperate moves will (have) cost us dearly the last few years. I think we are improving steadily, but we need to quit doing these deals for old/injured men.
Teams like the Yankees are making trades to get players they dont even need while teams like the Braves are just waiting around until it’s probably too late to get someone.
Whomever is in charge of bringing young HITTERS into this organization is what has destroyed the Braves.
We find some of the finest young arms in the game, but we cant get any hitters past Heyward(poss Freeman). Its astonising. We haven’t been able to hit for 15 years. Its the philosophy.
Matt has had a white hot bat…but only against lefties
I would buy that if he didn’t play most of the second half last year in Church’s abscence and put up some good solid numbers. I said it yesterday that Esco and Prado get most of the attention when it comes to our offensive surge last year in the second hald but Diaz was a huge contributor himself.
Ellsberry would be a great fit at the top of the order! Prado has been awesome but he would be more suited at the 2,3 or 6. Could we swing both Gullen and Ellsberry? If we make moves we have to move Chipper out of the 3 hole!!!
“I said it yesterday that Esco and Prado get most of the attention when it comes to our offensive surge last year in the second hald but Diaz was a huge contributor himself.”
If Wren stands pat without trying to improve the club (internally or trade) and Braves don’t make the post season, he will have deserved any and all flack he gets.
ga4life, that’s the reason why we could only manage to win 1 WS. NO HITTING. I mean I can’t remember how many games we lost 1-0 or 2-1 in the WS in the 90s.
Y’all o realize thaty Wren is not playing Yahoo Fantasy Baseball, that he can’t just take someone who has gone 1 for their last 6, go to the “All Availabkle Players ” page, pick the one with the best stats at whatever position he’s needing to fill and tomorrow they will be on his roster?
I would imagine he’s burning the phone lines and cell towers trying to get the best deal out there IF there is such a creature to begin with. The fact he hasn’t seen fit to take the time inform any of you mis=ght just be for one of two reasons – 1. He doesn;t have the time because he’s doing his freaking job, or 2. Let’s face it, dude. If the Braves somehow don’t make it to the postseason this season, it isn’t going to matter what Wren did or didn’t do at the deadline. The fans on boards like this will eat him alive.
Too bad Mclouth screwed the Braves last Sunday by causing us to lose to the Marlins……as a result Coghlan got hurt, and now the Marlins want the kitchen sink for Cody Ross. So Mclouth has screwed us in ways besides his bat and defense…Nice
What about Garrett Jones or Luke Scott? Both affordable, and both teams are sellers. Marlon Byrd has an affordable contract too, but I’m not sure if the Cubs are sellers at this point.
@kerryb, I believe that would make him a buy low opportunity. If his last two years are factors in the trade and he’s doing just as well this year, the Braves wouldn’t be able to touch him. But because he’s injured, I think that there’s a possibility that we can get him for a lot lower than he’s actually worth. He’ll definitely bounce back because of the past that he’s shown to have
With the Braves current roster, does anyone really think we could beat the Yankees in the WS ? Especially now that they have Berkman and maybe Dunn ???
Why are you still bellyaching about McLouth GIDP against the Marlins? If Glaus hadn’t done the same thing, we would’ve won the game and McLouth’s GIDP wouldn’t have mattered.
It’s kinda hard to ignore the fact that Wren is going after Cody Ross, or was. That’s a clear sign that we ain’t getting what most of us obviously want for our team and that’s a slugger. I’m not setting my hopes high on this one. I’ve learned my lesson. The Braves are obviously low on money and Wren has made it very clear he will not trade certain prospects anyways. Good chance teams with a valuable player will eventually get a top prospect somewhere if Wren doesn’t offer one.

@njbraves, you can’t read half of the comments on here anyway. Everyone thinks that their comment will be read so they say whatever the hell they want.
Pretty sure spending millions of exta cheese the Braves don’t have isn’t those trams getting Oswalt and Berkman for “nothing”; if the Steinbrenners owned us we’d be spending money at the trade deadline instead of talking prospects too. Then maybe you’d be happy we got late 30’s pitcher and OF on the decline for half a season for “nothing”
Don’t expect any of the Braves moves to involve the spending of money. The payroll is not gonna go up. Liberty has spent all it will spend this year. LaRoche at first is a great move right now with Glaus struggling. He has a one year contract if I remember right and that is all the Braves want with Freeman in the wings. If Freeman is that close just save the money and bring him up. Next year every team in baseball will be vying for the sevices of guys like Crawford. The Braves won’t get him because they won’t commit the money. Get used to it folks…Until Arthur Blank buys this team they will be the Brewers of the Eastern Division.
Being in 1st place in the regular season means nothing. It’s all about the postseason.
Without finishing in 1st place or being lucky enough to get wild card spot, there is no postseason… so yeah, finishing first is a pretty flippin’ big deal.
After seeing all the names thrown about and trades proposed, I know one thing for sure. Whoever Wren gets, he is going to get pilloried for either getting the wrong guy or giving up too much. But when you consider that folks will find his address and murder his puppies if he stands pat, he really has no way out.
The Braves were doing great before the All-Star break…they trade Escobar…and now the team struggles. Coincidence? Not likely. You move one player out, put somebody else in…somehow, it doesn’t work as well anymore.
However, I can sense the Braves season slipping away. I just never felt as strongly about a trade as this one (Escobar-Gonzalez). If Chipper Jones hits 40 HR and has 120 RBI, then if he wants Escobar out, then fine. But Chipper is a shell of his former self. In fact, for the money he gets ($14 million in 2010; .251 BA, 7 HR, 41 RBI), we could have got 2-3 good players. And the Braves didn’t want to pay Adam LaRoche $6 million/year. Are you freakin kidding me?
And Bobby Cox will be gone after this year (so no reason to jeopardize our future for his sake).
I also wonder about the anonymous quotes about Escobar: “Bobby hates Escobar” and “Escobar doesn’t have a lot of friends in the clubhouse.”
It makes me think these quotes come from only 1 player (probably Chipper Jones). I’m happy for Escobar; from Sportscenter highlights, I see it is all smiles and he is on an offensive tear in Toronto.
And it’s not because I don’t like Gonzalez (he’s had a fine career; seems to be a good teammate), it’s just I’ve see what Escobar can do. Trading him away reeked of panic from the Braves management.
Bottom line: Escobar is a Chevy Corvette (not 100% reliable, but still a high performance vehicle); and Gonzalez is a Cadillac Cimaaron (looks like a Cadillac, but just really a Chevy Cavalier with leather seats).
Don’t you play most of your games at home? I bet some Braves have better numbers at home than away. If you look at Young’s stats they compare with Heyward.
even last year Diaz hit 759 against RHed pitchers. not all that great, though admittedly better than most everybody this year
I was looking at his second half numbers but I don’t know what he did strictly against right handers. I just know he was a big part of that offensive surge and given our current offensive struggles right now we need to play our hot hands cause to be honest, there really aren’t many.
Because the Yankees want to rule the world…rumor has it that when the world series starts they will just purchase whoever the NL team is they are playing and win by default..muahahahah!!
Lolly, finishing 1st isnt as important as it used to be. As long as you are at least a wild card, that’s all that matters. I’d rather win the WS as a wild card than win the division and not win the WS.
Well, the Braves haven’t blown a division lead this late in a season in many years, BravesFanChris25. 1983 looks like the last time (6.5 game lead on August 13th). Chop Chop was three-and-a-half years old at the time.
So, in my opinion, it would be quite appropriate for fans to rip Wren to shreds if this team doesn’t get the job done.
(You’re right, of course. People rip him no matter what. I just think that the numbers would grow…and justifiably so.)

So…to summarize, the Braves are getting no one and will continue to leak oil like a Chrysler well into August. Great.

Well, Cody Ross is not a great player by any means but he would be an upgrade over McLouth.

#Braves still look like team in hardest on Cody Ross. But sources in touch w Braves believe they’re “highly unlikely” to deal by Sat #trades

@njbraves The Yankees are not going to get Berkman and Dunn. Why the hell would they want both?? It makes zero sense.
Berkman in LF, Gardner / Granderson in CF, and Dunn @ DH? That lineup would be videogame level at that point… lol
