Can we send Freeman and an arm to Seattle for Justin Smoak?
Stock couldn’t be lower on Smoak right now, and he’s going to have a tough time adjusting to the west coast (he’d thrive being closer to SC).
Freeman’s from California, correct? Seattle fits the move for him, too.
I’d love to have Smoak work with Chipper on his switch hitting…Smoak had the best swing I’ve seen in my life – and that was his first game in college when we beat him and South Carolina. They came to Elon and he hit a ball right handed that nearly bounced in the left handed batters box over 380 oppo to right field.
I’m all for acquiring Smoak, guy’s got serious talent.
Geography really makes a difference for some players and eventual superstars bounce around a little bit their first couple years, but this guy’s not a prospect. Smoak will be a an All-Star for at least 5-7 years in his MLB career.
Still also waiting on FW to trade for Micah Owings to be an OF for us next year…
Yes, that’s how ESPN’s Keith Law characterized Braves new shortstop, Alex Gonzalez, right after Wren traded Yunel Escobar for him — and before Escobar’s current hot streak.
Here’s the quote from Law:
“I like the minor league portion of the deal for Atlanta more than the major league portion. Escobar has been terrible this year at the plate, but still has an OBP (granted, in the easier league) forty points above Gonzalez’s equivalent, and the latter benefited from the homer-friendly Rogers Centre. Gonzalez is roughly Escobar’s equal in the field and is less erratic, but I’d probably still roll the dice on Escobar’s bat for the rest of the year, especially given Gonzalez’ long track record of OBPs at or below .300; even the change in leagues isn’t going to make him anything less than a prodigious maker of outs, although his consistency will likely placate the manager.” — End quote.
I am still IN SHOCK that Wren made this trade.
But it really makes one question Wren’s OVERALL JUDGEMENT — again and again!
Without Escobar the Braves are simply not as good a team now, as their after the break record demonstrates!
Alex Gonzalez went to hospital this morning w/ gastritis, which caused his fever yesterday. He’s doing better on medication now, won’t play tonight but possibly tomorrow if he keeps improving
You are right, there’s not really much out there I’d give young talent for so I say stand pat and play the cards we have and plan on that young talent winning for us next year. We have too many holes
Wren always keeps his cards close to his chest? Most of them he should never have been played. As a GM he’s a good second assistant to the clubhouse guy.
Yup! One more down for the Braves. That wasn’t the right fit anyway. Berkman is going to the Yanks because they will take his salary on. The Astros needed to hear that since they will be paying for most of Oswalt’s deal
Hmm Omar Infante at SS instead of Alex Gonzalez, I’ll take that all day long! Ellsbury is a pretty exciting rumor. Wonder why they want to get rid of him?
Per Wikipedia on GASTRITIS:
“main acute causes are excessive alcohol consumption or prolonged use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (also known as NSAIDs) such as aspirin or ibuprofen.”
Cody Ross is off the table, reportedly. Berkman is likely going to be a Yankee. The Ellsbury rumor could hold some water, as Boston needs pitching… I’m not sure how much it would improve the team considering his real value is solely on the basepaths, and the Braves don’t attempt to steal too many bases. Take away his SB totals, and you have a less powerful Melky Cabrera.
jaysonst: Mass confusion on Cody Ross’ status. All I can tell you is one team that asked #Marlins today was told “available if price is right” #trades [via Twitter]
I’d like to see Omar at short. He’s not a good defensive shortstop, thus making it possible for the inevitable, and highly entertaining, blowback on this blog to commence.
I agree with poopsie, all the names that you are talking about is not any better than what we have now. I didn’t agree with the pickup of Glaus either. I do agree with one thing, we do needs some speed and some more power in the line up. I would love to see someone like Crawford or Upton in the line up, I think it would be a much better team if that happen. everyone is always talking about how bad KK is in the rotations, but I disagree. I think he is a good pitcher, and has a lot of potential if he would get more run support. Look at the has been that we have now in Wagner. I’ve always been a huge Braves fan since they move to Atlanta, but over the last 3 or 4 years this team has gone from america’s team to a pretender. I want my old team back.
I do agree that this team needs some young guys with a little bit of speed. This team is already pretty darn slow and old. Chipper, McCann, Glaus, Hinske all in the middle of the order is a combo of slow and old and slow. Ellsbury in CF for a while would be nice. Prado is not a leadoff hitter long term. And Jason Heyward sure the heck isn’t a 2-hitter.
I guess the comments are coming too fast for the “one word: Monistat” sort of responses. Nobody cares about humor. They’d rather be wrapped up in rumor. That’s cool.
@Larry – Many reasons. Liberty aren’t going to spend a lot, Wren already over paid for Lowe, Mc-Out, and KK. Wren isn’t in the same class of GM as Cashman et al. He’s constantly out maneuvered and overpays. I’d trade Wren for th emanager of th elocal Shell station
