Isn’t LaRoche signed for next year, too? If so, he’d cost about what Berkman would cost. Roachy can’t play outfield though and they won’t bench Glaus.

“A little better than Pods with upside, but still not exactly what we need, and I would be careful about what I offer for him. His value is not as high as many ESPN-watchers would think.”

I agree with all of this. The key is that at 34, Podsednik is about to fall off a cliff. How we valuate what Ellsbury can give us for the next four years under contract should determine his trade worth. Just looking at our team in the short term, a top of the lineup of Ellsbury, Prado and Heyward offers a lot of overall ability.

The Cardinals’ “market” transcend the population of its immediate surrounding area (though that population is not small). The Cardinals have a following like the Braves. They dominate a large geographic area and have for a very long time. Nothing small-market about them.

If we do trade for Ellsbury, I hope it does not include Medlen, Dunn, Venters, or Kimbrel. If that’s the case, than I say do it and let him run as much as he wants. Than bat Heyward behind Glaus for protection and let the fun begin. Oh, Diaz needs to be our everyday LF till he fails. If they will give Nate McLouth all that time in the OF, Diaz has certainly deserved it.

Honestly, give me a break. He is a clear non tender candidate. He shouldn’t cost more than a B- prospect, at best. A complete joke if more than that is given up for him.

Steve from OH, agreed on Ellsbury. He is overrated because of the market he plays in. Theo knows this, and will ask for far more than any team should give up for him. Plus, they aren’t going to just give him away. Controllable through 2013, so no rush on a trade needed.

The Cardinals are a religion in the St. Louis area. It’s not that they have a larger population than other cities it’s that 80% of the people who live in the area follow, support and love the Red Birds. Not so in cities like Houston, Miami and dare I say Atlanta to name a few where football reigns and baseball is second at best. That’s the “market” I’m talking about. I’m not discussing the census.

I agree. 35-year old Pods is much less attractive than 27-year old Jacoby. Big difference in how they’ll perform now and in the future just because of their respective ages.

And that lineup does offer a lot of stability in the long-term, but we’re still a bat short. However, if shoring up the club means acquiring Ellsbury now and signing someone else in the offseason, then Wren needs to go for it. We can’t worry about what the Phillies are doing right now–their window is closing and ours is just opening. If we don’t make a deep run this year, so be it. We’re poised to be in much better position down the road, especially if LM would open their damn pocketbooks to help Wren get that last piece.

Thanks Crime Dog.

Robert, let me just add. It really doesn’t matter what the Braves and Phillies have against each other’s rotation. They only play each other 6 more times. 3 in each park. One could/should/can assume that they might go 3-3 against each other. Then what?

What it really comes down to, is that clearly, the Braves and Phillies likely have better rotations than most of the teams they will be facing until game 162, which likely means that the dog-fight will continue.

I’m not so sure we’ll be that lucky as fans to have those final 3 games mean anything. My guess is that the division is wrapped up before then.

The city became so diluted when it grew so quickly but there is a whole generation of fans at the games this year probably like 17-25 yrs old that is the biggest generation of native Atlantans in a long long time. Jacoby Ellsbury when healthy, and he should be back in a couple of weeks or so, is one of the best all-around players in the game. He has awesome speed and base running skills, hits the ball consistently and fields his position well. Although they are on record as saying so, it surprises me the Red Sox are even considering moving him.

Jacoby at the leadoff spot would allow Prado to return to his favorite spot at #2 in the batting order.

Unfortunately FW and the brain-trusts are waiting at the last minute to jump into the fray at the sales table, hoping to pick off a real bargain. That’s not the way to win a pennant though. If you are in first and you hesitate with improving your team, you are not going to come away with anything useful. Teams like the Phillies, the Dodgers, etc, etc are making it happen, not waiting for it to happen.

Remember, over the winter the promise of a significant power hitter for the team turned out to be Troy Glaus. Let’s hope for the best but be ready for a let-down.

have to say i agree he’s never been given the same patience or sample size to say how he would hit righties in the long haul.

actually, diaz has more PA vs. righties in his career than lefties. makes sense, since about 3/4ths of the pitchers in the majors are righthanded. he has OPSed over 200 points lower against righthanded pitchers, at .707 OPS. what suffers the most vs. righties is power, as he slugs only .378. that just isnt a guy that needs to be starting vs. righthanded pitchers, sorry.

No way for us to know, but I would bet the Cubs aren’t interested in trading him. They are sellers for this year, but have Byrd under contract for another 2, at a very reasonable price. I don’t think they are looking for a full rebuild, more of an off year (in their management’s eyes).

This is exactly why Wren’s position is so difficult. Ostensibly, we’re in win now mode for Bobby and Chipper but in terms of the construction of the team and our minor league status, we’re built for the future more than the now. The concession he has to make to improve our chances at a 2010 World Series cannot be one that overrides our ability to be an NL favorite in 2011 and 2012. I mean, someone randomly asked earlier if Mike Minor would come up and offer better performance than a guy we’re paying $16 million and I could not in good faith dismiss the premise. And Teheran, not Minor, is a our best pitching prospect. The only time in my life where the Braves had a similar situation was when our team was in first place and we also had a 100 win Greeneville team.

I just hope the Braves win a WS this year. 1 Major championship in Atlanta sports history is pathetic. They came out with a list of the most miserable sports cities and Seattle was #1, Atlanta #2. If you combine all the Atlanta teams they have played a combined 147 total seasons with 1 championship. The Braves have went to the NLCS 11 different times with just 1 WS to show for it. The Hawks have been to the playoffs 26 times since 1968 with no appearances in the NBA Finals to show for it.

Ellsbury would be a great acquisition if the Braves can get him. I have seen multiple reports that the Red Sox are trying to move an OF since theirs is getting slightly overcrowded so it would make sense. Ellsbury heads to arbitration for the first time this year, so he would be under control through 2013. Imagine your starting lineup begginging with Ellsbury, Prado, Heyward and McCann for the next 3 years.

I could see a deal based around Dunn and one of the young pitching prospects along with 1 more prospect getting it done. Might even be possible to avoid losing Minor, Teheran, Vizcaino or Delgado

All the Atlanta teams will have a big decade, including the Thrashers. Random thoughts:

1. If Braves can get Laroche cheap, do it; send Glaus to AL as a DH.

2. Ellsbury would be a plus; but Melky has hit about .300 the last three months. Diaz, Ellsbury, Heyward v. Diaz, Melky, Heyward – how much gain? how much do you give up for that gain? that’s the conundrum facing FW.

3. What about rumor that Werth got past 2B with Utley’s wife? Heard it on a TV show while spinning through channels. That might explain why he’s suddenly available – and no one seems to be jumping at him. DOB: have you heard the rumor, or that there’s an “issue” there?

4. Team seems tired. Glaus needs a long rest. BC needs to tweak the batting order more than a bit.

“If we don’t make a deep run this year, so be it. We’re poised to be in much better position down the road, especially if LM would open their damn pocketbooks to help Wren get that last piece.”

Hasn’t that been what Braves fans have been saying for years ???? It’s ALWAYS next year. Well guess what, this is Bobby and Chipper’s last season and we need to do whatever it takes to send them out with a Championship.

If McLouth had any nuggets, dipped or not, we might not be in the postion we’re in right now…

o we traded McLouth and KK for pop tarts and some coco cripsies and then flipped the crispies for polynesian sauce?

I swear I’ve heard these lyrics in a Beck song before. Am I just imagining things?
