How does Ed Wade continue to have a job? He might as well be running Enron. (PMC)

I completely disagree. I think the Astros have been as consistently relevant as any small market team in MLB for about a decade now. True they haven’t won playoff wise but it feels to me like they’ve been consistently in the 2nd half hunt/discussion year after year. Maybe I’m wrong and I’m definetly to lazy to check.

Why didn’t the Braves go after Scott Podsednik? I was screaming for Wren to sign him in the off season. Would have had a solid outfield if we did. And he would have been perfect at the lead off spot. Prado hitting second would have seen more fastballs. So would Chipper. Still makes me angry.

How about Ellsbury + Berkman?

I can’t see giving up Minor for either, but we should hope that IF Minor really is scratched from his start tonight and there really is something going on, it should be big…

I dont see Minor going away for Willingham or Ross or etc…

Ellsbury would allow Prado and Heyward to shift down the lineup one slot and if we obtained both Ellsbury and Berkman, the lineup would be pretty well stacked considering what we’d be receiving…

Berkman isnt quite the guy he used to be, but who wouldnt be rejuvenated about getting out of Houston?

We can also then move Chipper to somewhere he should be in the lineup like 6th

Lineup:

Ellsbury cf
Prado 2b
Heyward rf
Berkman lf
McCann c
Jones 3b
Glaus 1b
Gonzalez ss

Okay…I believe frank realizes it’s not speed, baserunners or solid hitters that we are desperate for. (Note….we could use speed.) we are DEAD LAST in leaving runners on base. We need someone who can clear the bases every once in a while. Heck, we usually just need a guy who can hit the ball to the outfield for a SAC-FLY. Dead last in LOB makes it fairly easy to see what you need. It’s all in the numbers boys! Go Braves!

Regarding Jose Guillen: The man, in fact, cannot hit. 80 OPS+ in limited playing time last year–brutal, even for an SS. Below-average OBP and mediocre power so far this year. Terrible piece. To me, Ellsbury is just a moderately better version of Scotty Pods with a chance to get better. He steals bases better than Pods and plays better D, although his stats suggest he’s a very average defensive CF. Doesn’t hit for a lot of pop, but is better than Melky. Has some projection left as he’ll be 27 in September, so he’s about to enter his prime as a player. He’s a first-time arb eligible next year, so he’ll make about 2.5 MM or so.

A little better than Pods with upside, but still not exactly what we need, and I would be careful about what I offer for him. His value is not as high as many ESPN-watchers would think.

Ellsbury is also a top rate defender in CF. Read: a true gold glove OF and not Nate McLouth. One would think that a good defensive CF in Fenway Park, where CF seems to just go-and-go-and-go with nooks and crannies at each turn, would excel in Atlanta’s relatively average dimensions.

“The Phillies have a better 1-4….but you can hang on the fact that you have a better #5″ Robert

Let’s break down the rotation.

#1’s: Halladay/Hudson… Halladay has a 2.21 ERA, Hudson a 2.40 ERA. Both are having EXCELLENT seasons. Roy has him in IP. So what? Braves bullpen trumps the Phillies bullpen. So as much as people would like to give this one to Halladay. It’s closer to a push than most think.

#2’s: JJJ/Hamels. Hamels has been pretty damn conistent since May first. Posting an ERA under 2.86 in each month. April wasn’t bad either at 3.60. Ironically, Jurrjens has a 2.84 ERA since his return. Which is obviously much closer to what he’s done for his short career, rather than the injury laden spring and April he had. Again. Push as far as I’m concerned.

#3’s: Hanson/Oswalt. Veteran prescence and experience obviously goes to Oswalt. But as I pointed out earlier today, take out Hanson’s back to back horrible starts against the White Sox and Tigers and he has a 3.12 ERA. Oswalt had a horrible June and has bounced back with a very nice July. I don’t know? Maybe a slight not to Oswalt for being the veteran? But when you look at what he’s done against the NL East (especially the Braves), I’m not so sure. In 2 games against the Phillies this year, hanson is 2-0 with a 2.38 ERA. Easily could be a push.

#4’s & #5’s: Lowe & Medlen/Kendrick and ??? Kendrick has a 4.44 ERA and Lowe’s has a 4.58 ERA. So you’re right Robert. It’s another push. Medlen is CLEARLY better than anybody the Phils will throw out in the 5 spot.

You claim that the 5th starter won’t make a difference? Guess again buddy. For starters, the Phillies have that 24 game in 23 day stretch. So for at least 5 times through the rotation, they can’t skip the 5th starter. And if you calculate that each team has about 60 games left after this weakent and divide that by 5, you get 12 more starts (give or take) for each team’s 5th starter.

You tell me that if we had KK making 12 more starts, that wouldn’t make you nervous.

The whole rotation could be thought of as a push. But hell, why not make “Lowe” the #1 if Hallady is night and day above anybody we’ve got. Concede it. Then we’re CLEARY better at 2-5 in the rotation, right?

Braves bullpen is better. Braves bench is better. Braves schedule is better. Phillies have us beat on 1 starter in the rotation and the lineup and that’s questionable with Utley and Victorino out.

The Braves were on TBS nationally broadcast in the 70’s and 80’s but I dont think anyone then would have said Atlanta was a big market. It has nothing to do with national following. Its referring to the size of the media market and who will see them locally. Atlanta’s is huge because the metro area blew up but also because it covers such a large geographic area, i dont think there is another media market in north gerogia unless dalton has local channels.
