I like the idea of Ellsbury…he’s pretty good with the bat, and like DOB highlighted the kid has speed and is pretty good at stealing bases. Him at the top, Prado batting second, Heyward moving down into an RBI spot, sounds good to me.
Our best chance to win it all is not 2010 anyway. We’re not there yet. This team has so much potential in the coming years. Do not trade the future so we can win one for Bobby. Does anybody really believe that’s even a remote possibility?
He’s Bobby Cox. His best chance is for the team to do it for him. It was a pretty successful strategy through the first half, you have to admit. Face it, the more input he has, the worse off we are.
Again, do you really, truly, honestly believe this is the kind of team that can play deep into October?
Nothing that’s happened in the last ten years would suggest that the Braves have much chance of success in the playoffs.
If they can just somehow break out of this pathetic slump sooner than later they can still potentially win the division. Even I would be happy with that. Even if they lose in the first round you’d have to consider this season a huge success if they could just get one more NL East title in Bobby’s last year.
I sincerely hope the Braves have not become the kind of organization that would proudly hang a Wild Card banner.
By no means is Roy Oswalt the difference maker people are making him out to be… redundant?
When was the last time he even beat us? Oh right. The playoffs.
The Braves just need to win, baby. We’re still in first. The Phillies have yet to prove they can beat us. We’ve won five of the last six. Surely, they can do better than that. I’d like to see it.
They just need to break out of this. They still have a chance. Don’t trade Medlen or Hanson or Minor… whoever. 2011 and beyond is what we should be focused on.
That said, we gotta be able to get something for Melky, Nate, Clevlen, Hicks, Dunn, Chavez, etc. Right?
We should also be able to aquire Luke Scott in addition to Ellsbury. If Ellsbury is healthy and we get those two without touching our big prospects, Wren would get thumbs up from me
***************************************
Given the current market and value (and our needs) this seems like an excellent scenario for the Braves.
I also feel that Marlon Byrd would be the best fit for this team. Solid hitter with some pop and plays very good defense. The Cubs are pretty much out of the race sitting 10 games under .500, but its hard to imagine they trade their best player this year. It would take quite a bit to get him but with the pitching depth in the minors there isn’t a spot for everyone. Losing one of the stars won’t kill the Braves.
Jacoby Ellsbury, wow I did not see that one coming……The Braves definitely need speed, but where is this guy gonna hit in the order. Will you move Martin Prado back to the 2 hole and Jacoby Ellsbury leading off? Move Jason Heyward down in the order to 5th or 6th…….I would do it, I’m not sure Cox would want to move Prado, but his been productive wherever his been so it doesn’t really matter. And since he has been in the DL his trading value isn’t exactly high, a few good but not untouchable prospects should be enough.
Maybe someone can clarify, but doesn’t Guillen have a bad rep regarding his attitude at times? I thought I remember hearing him in trouble in the past. I mention because the Braves seem to talk more about chemistry of the clubhouse than in the past – like they are really sensitive to tampering with what they have going.
Regardless, I think Guillen would be a good pick up. It might give the team added fire and punch.
Looking at the list of potential pickups, I can say I threw up in my mouth!
Ellsbury isn’t even ready to go yet! How can you rely on his current health not being a question? He would cost you Minor and perhaps much more. I’m not against shipping talent off to get talent, but Ellsbury is a question mark right now.
Guillen is another head case. Braves just shipped Escobar and now would consider bringing his big brother in? No way I make this deal.
If you could get Fat Elvis without giving up anything and get some money from the Stros to pay him…. go for it! Can’t see paying for him with top notch prospects for the rental.
I have to say I agree with the earlier poster who said put Heyward in CF and put Diaz in right and Hinske in left every day and let Melky be #4.
My question is WHY is Boston making Ellsbury available?
What would they want from us – I wouldn’t think prospects if they still think they are in it. And you don’t give up a legit leadoff guy for a middle relief guy.
Frank Wren is not going to take a chance on Ellsbury if he is not 100% healthy. He would look like another Nate Mcclouth. I like Bautista but like DOB said they probably want to much for him. They guy from KC makes the most since for us. Berkman would be pretty good too.
Tomas, I would bat Prado second and Heyward 3rd – moving the immobile Chipper to 5th where he really needs to be. I don’t know if it’s loyalty or what, but having Chipper stuck in the 3rd hole (and 3rd base) just cripples the lineup sometimes.
My question is WHY is Boston making Ellsbury available?
Good question. If I was a Red Sox fan, I wouldn’t be too crazy about an outfield featuring Mike Cameron, Bill Hall, and JD Drew. I’d be counting down the days until Jacoby comes back.
Kind of funny… if you are following the live stuff (twitter, ESPN trade deadline live, etc.) If everything goes completely quiet for like 15 minutes, you get the feeling something significant is about to break.
arkansas transplant Scott is a below average defender.
at what positions and accroding to whom? looks like he is a little better than average at the corners, slightly below average at 1st, according to fangraphs.
Actually let me add to something I said in my last post.
IF the Braves don’t add the outfield bat by tomorrow, they MUST put Heyward in center and get Hinske and Diaz in there every day. Either that or Infante platooning in the OF with Hinske and Diaz.
The current offense just ain’t getting it. If they don’t add a bat, they gotta get a pick me up by putting their weakest outfield bat (Melky) on the bench and play the four guys who can hit out there. (Heyward, Diaz, Hinske, Infante)
“Nick was being a smart ass…Minor has not been scratched.”
Well, since only a fool would use the word “smart” in any sentence involving Nick. One can only assume that you meant to just say Nick was being an ass.
Is it too late to co-sign on the Ellsbury petition? While it’s not the impact bat we could use this season, I think this could be our speedy leadoff hitter for many years to come. Red Sox have logjam at OF- and Ellsbury seems to be on their poop list. I recall he complained a bit about being shifted from CF to LF, and then Sox claim he’s stretching out this latest injury… all that means he could fall into our lap much cheaper than he would have last season.
So, the takeaway from this post seems to be that the market is really bad right now, and Wren will not add a major piece.
That’s bad. No, the crappy baseball we’ve been playing for the last week does NOT represent this team’s true talent level, but let’s face it: Philadelphia has improved itself a lot recently, and we have stood pat or slid backwards. (Yes, Gonzalez is a downgrade from Escobar. I know all of you people swooning over his calm eyes, professional demeanor, and clubhouse presence don’t want to hear it, but it’s true.)
If Wren stands pat, I do not think we will win the East this year. Maybe we can slip into the wild card berth, maybe not, but the squad as it stands now is probably not equal to Philly even with Utley out. And Utley will be back.
It would be interesting to see if the Giants acquire Adam Dunn, especially if Madison Bumgarner goes to the Nats in the deal. The Nats would then have Strasburg, Zimmermann, Bumgarner and Lannan, all under the age of 26, in their 2011 rotation. Marquis would probably be the other guy. That’s a nice group of arms there.
Would you Ellsbury haters feel better about it if we were able to get Boston to take back KK or McLout as part of the package deal? I’d feel better about giving up one of our better prospects if they’d also take the dead weight off our hands as well, since it would free up cash for this winter.
Please stop it with the I’d rather have Blanco in CF nonsense! If Blanco were that good, he’d be the Braves leadoff hitter. Ellsbury is a bonafide leadoff hitter and basestealing threat. I personally think if the Braves got Ellsbury, they should move Chipper to 6 hole. And have Heyward bat 3rd in front of BMac or Glaus or Berkman(if they decide to make 2 trades)
I don’t think Guillen would be a problem in the Braves clubhouse. It’s true he has had his share of problems including a physical altercation with Mike Sciosca(sp?) when he was with the Angels and he has bounced around quite a bit from team to team. But still, the man can hit and drive in runs, something the Braves obviously need. Another factor to consider is that he is a free agent after the year and should be motivated to produce to better his chances of signing with a team next year.
Also, I think he would be on his best behavior because if word gets out that you’re a problem child on a Bobby Cox run team- a manager who is well respected everywhere and who never calls his players out publically and gives them every chance to succeed- then you obviously have problems. Really I think Guillen is just an emotional guy who wants to win (see comments he made to Kansas City reporters earlier this year about the Kansas City team, I know someone had posted the link on the blog.)
Possible trade: Minor and Delgado + prospect for Joakim Soria, Guillen and cash considerations. Fills need for bat and reliever(plus answers closer question for next year when Wagner retires. Kansas City gets young pitching one of whom is close to the majors.
Ellsbury’s a good player. The Red Sox won’t trade him unless they get a premium for his services. After all, they’ve got Cameron and Drew out there. Cameron appears to be a fossil, while Drew is, well, Drew. As any intelligent GM knows, it’s not very smart to trade a good player out of anger or frustration. You trade a good player because it will significantly upgrade your club now or in the near future.
“Ellsbury or no Ellsbury, the key to making the postseason, in my opinion, is Troy Glaus. What I wouldn’t give for a 3-4 performance from him tonight.”Reality Check
I disagree. There is enough pitching and enough other hitters (along with the cake schedule, mainly at home, the Braves have the rest of the way) to make the playoffs.
But Chipper and Glaus’ prodution, along with where Bobby hits them in the order, have EVERYTHING to do with whether this team can win a road game in the playoffs, much less win a series.
I honestly believe that calling up Blanco, calling up Freeman (and at the very least, platooning him with Glaus), and letting Diaz/Hinske platoon in LF, and getting Infante more AB…..
that Wren is right. The fixes can be made in house. But it ALL predicates on Bobby actually playing the right guys and putting them in the right order.
If Chipper was a 3 year vet that Wren traded for, he’d be batting 7th or 8th (if he would even be in the lineup). What the hell does Infante and Conrad have to do to get some AB? What the hell does Glaus have to do to get a day off?
This slump is just as much on Bobby’s lineup choices as it is who Wren gives him to work with, and/or Liberty Media’s for limiting what Wren can spend.
What about a guy like Mike Lowell who can play first and third when needed. Very sucessful rehab in AAA. Would not have to give up too much. He definitely available!
Arkansas Transplant….How many times are you going to post that ridiculous Greinke trade that has zero chance of happening?? Why would the Royals want KK?? You want Greinke, you’d have to start with Teheran.
Aparently the Astros are into paying thier stars to go away for mostly crap… so lets trade them some parts and let them pick up most of Lance Berkman’s salary.
How does Ed Wade continue to have a job? He might as well be running Enron.
Unless someone wants some combination of Kawakami, McLouth, Dunn, Clevlen, Resop, Chavez, Schafer and/or Lowe, I doubt Wren will be able to get anything done before tomorrow’s deadline. I hope I’m wrong…
Great point at 3:53 KC. Nobody wants to acknowledge it. Money being a non-deciding factor, Lowe and Medlen are the best 4-5 punch in the NL. Which is why for a month all of the experts have been saying the Braves won’t fall apart.
Just so long as the old man doesn’t lead them in a cliff diving adventure by continuing to plug non-productive, past their prime, ex-sluggers into the middle of the order.
jeffrey-
Diaz was given the everyday LF starting job to begin the season last year. He failed miserably… then suddenly became great again when he was moved back into platoon/part-time role. Matty’s my boy, and I like him, but some people are not cut out to be starters. Unfortunately he is one of those.
“This is true. However Lowe/Medlen > Kendrick/??????, and until we reach the playoffs both teams will be using a 5 man rotation.”
Kendrick 4.44 ERA > Lowe 4.48 ERA….I’ll call it a push. So are you really bragging about an advantage on the 5th spot in the rotation?
The Phillies have a better 1-4….but you can hang on the fact that you have a better #5
BTW, its just a matter of time before teams figure Medlen out. His last start was the beginning of that. He’s going to get ROCKED tonight in Cincy….mark my words.
Bonesaw says there is someone at the farm that can outpitch Jesse “I was in the movie Young Guns” Chavez…now pass the peyote brother!
{Kawakami, Dunn, and Chavez sitting in the bullpen:}
Kenshin: “Hey Chay-vez. How come they ain’t playin’ us?”
Mike Dunn: “We’re in the spirit world, @zzhole. They can’t see us.”
njbraves, the package speaks for itself. Who won’t want to fill 3/5th of your rotation for next season in one trade. Plus add a bat to the outfield along with a possible stalwart in the pen? Only giving up one player that was slated past this year…huh.. I don’t know why would you?
Can’t imagine the Red Sox giving away Ellsbury. My guess is that it would cost a lot in prospects. More than you’d want too for a player coming off injury.
N8 – I will disagree with one thing you said, though. The way we’re playing right now, no schedule, even at home, should be considered “cake.” Still, you make excellent points.
Medlen has never pitched more than 67 innings in a seaon. He’s already at 97 and counting….he’s going to wear down in September just like Happ did last year.
Diaz to leftfield, Hinski to 1st base, and Infanti in center. If no trades are in the works this is without a doubt the best possible line up the braves could put on the field at this time.
Diaz has not performed as well against RHP as he has left, but like some other hot performers in Braves history…. he’s never been given the same patience or sample size to say how he would hit righties in the long haul. He can struggle for 20 AB’s against righties and it’s “he just doesn’t hit right handed pitching well.” I don’t buy it.
As for Guillen, does anyone remember that Guillen and Chipper had a pretty good on field dust up a few years back when Chipper was playing third and Guillen running the bases? Surely you guys haven’t forgotten that one have you?
So according to bubble boy this blog: http://thebravechop.blogspot.com/ is the one who posted the ellsbury rumor originally. and according to that blog, Fan house broke the story. and according to fanhouse the sources declined to be named because the talks are still going on. hmmmm………

What I wouldn’t give for a 3-4 performance from him tonight.” Reality Check

He’s going to get ROCKED tonight in Cincy….mark my words.

njbraves, the package speaks for itself. Who won’t want to fill 3/5th of your rotation for next season in one trade. Plus add a bat to the outfield along with a possible stalwart in the pen? Only giving up one player that was slated past this year…huh.. I don’t know why would you?
