Jon–
People weren’t coming to Braves games even before the recession…I think around Buckhead would have been a better location or at least north of downtown, since most of the commuters live north of downtown and have to fight traffic going both ways to go to a game…
Jeez. Whaddy know. Prado and Heyward got to a full count, Heyward laces a double down the LF line and Chipper taps a weak flyout to CF on the 1st pitch that can’t even advance the runner.
But regardless of whatever makes the Braves not sell out every day, there isn’t one single reason and everyone could name something they think why that is.
The big point about that is that it translates into reasons why the Braves don’t have such a high payroll
Bold pre-game prediction coming up… okay, here it is:
The Braves will have a scoring opportunity in the first inning and will fail to take advantage.
Just a hunch. Don’t ask me where I come up with this stuff. I mean, usually they go crazy in the first inning, scoring runs left and right but, this time I’m betting that won’t happen.
He’s an above average pitcher who probably won’t be worth the money he is paid by the Phillies from now until the end of 2011. The Phillies had to make this move to undo some of the damage of the Cliff Lee trade, though.
WHy is it that other teams are trading for all of this talent without giving up practically nothing, but Wren apparently has to chop his balls off to get players that’s not even half has good?
I think somewhere around Sandy Springs would be more of a central location, since the Atlanta metro is much more heavily populated north of I-20 than south. Downtown isn’t really central from a population standpoint.
But who makes up most of that population? People moving here from every where else in the country. They aren’t going to suddenly become braves fans if you move the stadium. The Braves have fans that come from everywhere throughout the southeast and every throughout the country. Downtown for better or worse is a solid location because its easier to find if i’m not from here. There can be some improvements but I think they need to stay downtown and usually on the southside of the city there is more room to build.
I’m already pissed off because the one night I thought I would get to watch the game on my TV (MLB network), since my guide said it was the Reds/Braves game, but when I go to turn it on, it’s the frickin Red Sox!!
Then I get the damn mlb.tv logged in in time to see Heyward’s walk and Chipster hit a ball that would have been an out on a beer league softball field.
I backed off of the Heyward into the 3-hole and Chipper to the 2-hole for a while because they were winning. But this is frickin’ ridiculous.

BravesFan2010: It would be nice, but it wouldn’t be realistic. I would believe that that would tie in, exponentially, to what the ownership is willing to put into the team. If the team is only willing to put the 15th most into payroll in the MLB, then they’re more likely than not going to have their own TV station.
While weather is a factor, the layout of the city has a huge impact. Atlanta has the 4th longest commutes of any cities. The three cities with longer commutes–NYC, DC and Chicago, are much more densely populated. By the time, one leaves work, commutes home, it is a huge schlep to get back to the stadium. The city sprawls and so is not conducive to having large attendance. There are many other factors, but the city layout, combined with a large population of people who relocated from elsewhere, i.e., have loyalties elsewhere, would significantly impact attendance.
I don’t know if it was said here earlier but Miss Iowa — the butt of Batista’s joke the other day — threw out the first pitch in D.C. Very nice looking lady.
Actually, the Braves were the butt of that joke the other night.
