we dont need chris young or his contract. He cant hit outside home park. he is another mclouth and we would be stuck with his contract also. young = mclouth x 2
How could Phillies get trade like this one after another without keeping all their untouchable prospects?
I would argue that J.A. Happ is more valuable than an “untouchable prospect” anyway. The kid has already proven that he can play at the MLB level. He was runner up in ROY last year in case people have forgotten.
You guys who are high on Bautista absolutely kill me. You want to trade a future 3rd starter (Medlen) for a guy who at 29 has hit more than twice his career high in HR’s. Bautista’s OPS this year is nearly 200 points higher than his career average. Yea – he’s going to sustain that level of dominance. We do not need Bautista! Especially if we are trading a solid SP like Medlen to get him. Come on people – quit being so here and now and think about what this means for the future of the Braves.
coach smith, i think you’re right about the Phils bullpen, and i don think it will come back to haunt them, but not until the postseason. that is the time of the year when a bad bullpen costs you games. but it won’t have a significant impact on them because they have a really good offense and a pitching staff that now has 2 aces and a potential 3rd ace on it. those guys are going to eat up so many innings that a good bullpen won’t be as necessary.
but the lack of a bullpen makes them very unlikely to win a World Series, in my opinion.
Wooderson,
I brought him up also..His 3 year splits are okay and he would be our best defensive CF since Andruw ate Krispy Kreme out of business. A 6-7 hole hitter like Andruw was and could steal a few bases. Don’t know if he is available, but maybe Beachy and Delgado get him. Maybe add in another reliever like Dunn or Marek
“Remember those days when the Braves could afford the big trades and when free agents wanted to come to Atlanta to play baseball…?”
Yeah, I also remember hearing no end to the whining about the players the Braves gave up in those big trades a couple of weeks ago during the All-Star break.
“But to get Jose Bautista you probably have to trade a good pitcher like Kris Medlen.”
If this is the scenario my answer is no all day. Meds is way to valuable. All you have to do is look at the Oswalt deal. The Phillies basically got him plus $11m for Happ and parts. I think you would have a 50/50 split in an argument as to who is better between Meds and Happ. With all that being said one and a half years of Bautista is not worth 4-5 years of Medlin.
Naw, I am enjoying where the Braves are right now and been proud of this long stay in first place. I just don’t worry about what the Phillies, Astros and Mets do in their organization.
I worry about what the Braves are doing. Don’t know how that got misunderstood, but sometimes people read into it what they like.
Who could the Blue Jays scout possibly be looking at on our ML team. Dunn or Chavez? I dont see anyone else on the 25 man that we would be prepared to give up for any of the Toronto pieces. Or could it be Matty Diaz – please no!
coach smith is right Chris Young is the guy in my opinion… his career numbers arent great but he is a GREAT athlete and besides, he is an OBVIOUS upgrade from Mclouth/Cabrera
Says you…. So what, you take one week of struggling on the road and all of a sudden this team sucks to you? Do you even realize that the Braves have only lost 2 of the last 25 series they’ve played? You wanna be a Negative Nellie, fine, be one. How bout finding a better reason than “individual stats” to support your negative thoughts though.
Let’s not forget Oswalt is just one player. Fangraphs has Oswalt worth 2.7 wins better than a readily-available or fringe starting pitcher so far this season. So how much of an impact can he possibly make in two months? I mean, I don’t want to downplay the significance of the Phillies adding a starter who has been more valuable than anyone on their staff not named Halladay. This move along with getting Utley back soon may push them over the Braves. But it’s not as much of a sure thing as it seems to some. Plus there is a decent chance that both teams make the playoffs. Plus the trade deadline is not over. I would be moderately surprised if the Braves don’t at least upgrade a little bit before the deadline or before the August 31st deadline.
well this is A MUST WIN GAME FOR THE BRAVES. you cannot and should never lose a series to the marlins and nationals in back to back series. The phillies will sweep the pathetic diamondbacks and be 2.5 out if we do not win .. again they should never lose this series..
Chris Young and Adam LaRoche (he of the second half surges) would greatly help the Braves offense. Chris Young will give us more than a rental in CF. The Braves could keep Glaus as a backup 1B/3B, pinch hitter or trade him for a prospect.
I would rather have them than a 1 hit wonder. With the HR Alex Gonzalez hit in Toronto and Yunel’s resurgence there as well, I view Bautista’s numbers with a bit of skepticism
“The kid has already proven that he can play at the MLB level.”
I think it’s a distinct possibility that Happ matches the performance of Oswalt from now until the end of 2011. Having said that, he’s far from a kid. He turns 28 in October.
Look, I am just as nervous any blogger about the recent slide – but make a comaprison of the Braves to the TB Rays. They are both mid-market teams, so I think the comparison is fair. The Rays had the best record in baseball and were leading the AL East, then went through a 3 or 4 week slide and lost the division lead and slipped pretty far down on the MLB’s best record thing. Now they’s began to bounce back and are on the Yankees’ heels in AL East and have MLB’s second-best record. Braves are just going through a cold spell- they’ll be back just like the Rays. Plus- I don’t think Phillies and Mets are as good as Yankees and Red Sox, so I think if we just wait this out, we’ll be fine. Could we use a bat? You bet your a** we could, but it doesn’t look like Wren wants to pay the going price- and I can’t say I blame him. Let the Phillies burn their minors to the point where in 4-5 years, they’re gonna be in big trouble. And Braves will still be looking down at them in standings.
To whoever said the Braves would have to give up Medlen to get Bautista: I doubt it. The Blue Jays and everyone else knows that there is a risk that Bautista reverts back to being a mediocre player for the rest of the season, so they know they can’t ask for a talented, young pitcher as good as Medlen in return.
The Phillies are making moves like crazy and are involved with several that they are working on.
Meanwhile we are hearing nothing about the Braves. It appears that Frank Wren was telling the truth when he said that they were likely to stand pat.
I dont get it. The phillies are doing what it takes to win now. The braves always have the wait and see attitude. That is why we havent won anything in the last several years.
Once again we will lose because no one wants to do anything.
Chris Young and Jason Heyward would be be a great tandem in the outfield… the ball would have to be hit on a rope to fall between those guys…talk about two guys who can cover some ground
As I have said before, you won’t here much from the braves before a trade. They got burned by the furcal thing and have kept a very tight lip since. Did anyone hear about the A Gon trade. The answer is no. I expect that will be the case on the next trade as well.
Jeff, nope. Not a must-win game. There are still a little over two months left and no matter what happens, the Braves will still lead the division. Absolutely not a must-win unless they changed some rules and we don’t know about it. Calling it a must-win is laughable. Anyone who calls this game a must-win should just go ahead and turn off baseball and get out their Bulldogs, Tech and Falcons gear because that’s the sport you need to be watching. Baseball is a 162-game season and there are still a little over 2 months left.
i think that making a move is what put us over the hump when we got the Crime dog.

regardless of market size, my point was that every team goes through winning streaks and losing streaks. We are currently in the latter. I believe in the very near future we are likely to return to the former. My whole point was more about not panicing and less about market sizes. My comparision to Rays was just to prove that a successful team can have a bad stretch and still return to form…
No…hes going to stay inside on heyward….not going to give him anything he can extend on…..seems like the running way people have started to pitch him…theyd rather walk him than let him extend….p*ssies.
No im not saying it wsa a good pitch….it was entirely too low….it was a good pitch if the hitter chases it….OUT of the zone….but it is being called a strike…absolutely ridiculous zone.
2 easy outs. betcha we dont score another run.. if u cant touch burnett. storen destroyed them tuesday and capps was money. chipper 3-1 count grounds out. bravoo.
“Baseball 101, right. But a player who can produce in that situation is not necessarily going to put more runs on the scoreboard for your team over the long haul. My point is, you can’t build an offense merely around players who are good at driving in runs via sac flies and groundballs. You win by building an offense around players who are good at getting on base first and foremost and then players who are good at slugging. What’s that great sac-flier going to be when there is nobody on third? He is going to be a guy who pops out. Yes, all things being equal you want the contact guy. But if things are not equal, I’ll take the better on-base/slugger over the contact guy.”
Shaun …I have two thoughts regarding this.
1. Do you seriously believe that a player in that situation should adjust their approach based on the number of theoretical overall runs that could be scored, or the actual potential run that is available there and now for the taking?
2. Who the hell is talking about building a lineup constructed of guys who are good at producing sac flies and RBI groundouts? Lineups have been constructed as you suggest for a long, long time. Even my rec softball team does this. Your original statement under refute was that RBI’s should be ignored more or less. Numerous real game situation examples have been given as to why this is not true, yet you continue to immerse the debate with Epsteinian construction theory.
Rob….the thing is what Heyward is gong to have to do…is back up a step off the plate…if you noticed hes much closer to the plate now than he was the first half of the year……and thats why hes getting tied up inside…..and grounding a lot of balls….man when this guys extends….hes going to be absolutely money from the 3 hole in the lineup….
Poor AB by Chipper, why swing? Burnett was losing his control a bit. What a waste. I really have no faith in Chipper, not like Glaus would have come through though..

No im not saying it wsa a good pitch….it was entirely too low….it was a good pitch if the hitter chases it….OUT of the zone….but it is being called a strike…absolutely ridiculous zone.

It looks to me like the pre-season projection engines actually projected McLouth to have a better season this year than Chris Young.

Shaun @ 3:05 pm

Either way, I had a feeling he wasn’t going to do s***. Really wish he had though.
This is utterly disgraceful. The f***ing Washington Nationals.
I mean, not only did we lose the series to the Marlins, we trailed in every single game. What is that about? My God, can we do anything?
