Did I mention that the Phils haven’t lost a game since they fired their hitting coach Milt Thompson? Just saying……

Just saying? Well what else is there to say?

They weren’t hitting. It’s a business. If you’re not getting results, you’re gone.

That’s an example of an organization that respects the expectations of its fan base. Is it easy to say that it was a good move based on the Phillies recent seven game win streak? Yes. Plenty of times it’s a move made in haste or desperation (Cubs for example), but it’s something that in my opinion was justified.

It’s a business decision but not one you would see in Atlanta because the Braves aren’t a business, they’re a family. We couldn’t possibly do that to TP. He won a batting title nineteen years ago. He’s the best.

Ok Melky … you’re left handed. Hit left handed and that’s it. You can’t hit sh** from the right side. How does he not realize this? Or does he think he has more value as being labled a swutch hitter? Yeah, right.

Melky. A walk would have worked there, man. Geez. Especially if youre going to take a slap little swing and ground out to second. What’s the point in getting into a hitter’s count if you’re going to take a swing like that?
Oh well. Got one back. But Babe Desmond is due to hit this inning.

ugh. i’m sure i’m going to get criticized for being too negative, but this sucks soooooo bad. a week ago it felt like we were on top of the world. then half our players forget how to play, our lead gets cut in half in a matter of 1 weekend, and the Phillies just went out and got ANOTHER ace. after watching this team blow it so many times for 20 years, i’m having a hard time summoning the strength to keep watching this team.

someone please encourage me or give me some good news!!! i don’t care if you have to make it up… i’m so depressed right now…

You guys say play the hot hand and Diaz should be playing more — hasn’t Hinske been hitting the ball well, too?
You want Diaz to play for Heyward?
Personally, I wouldnt mind Hinske playing 1B a few games and letting Diaz get more starts in the OF, but by and large this platoon thing is working out OK for leftfield. It’s center field that is the huge gaping hole.

Folks think about how the Braves got the lead in the division?

Troy Glaus carried the team in May and part of June. Hinske played great, in fact over his head. Heyward had big hit after big hit for a while before getting hurt. Hudson has been lights out. Prado has been worthy of league MVP in the first half.

What I’m getting at is this. Other than Hudson’s performance, could anyone have expected the great performances by the above personnel?

Can Glaus be expected to match what he did for two months? Can Hinske, a backup roleplayer, be expected to continue to perform at a high level? Heyward is a keeper but can’t expect him to be the horse that gets the Braves to the promised land this year. Prado is great but can you depend on him to be “the guy?”

Mac and Chip stunk it up for a good part of the first half but even now that they are hitting better do you really think they will provide the offense the Braves must have?

Hadn’t even talked about the dream season that Conrad has had.

It was a perfect storm. Lots of contributors, lots of contributions. Now it seems they are coming back to earth at the same time. Wish I could expect these players to heat back up but many of them have been playing over their head so you can’t expect that to repeat itself.

It’s a mediocre team, folks!

Anyone who thinks the Braves should make a move because the Phils got Oswalt doesn’t understand baseball. You don’t make reactionary moves like that. The Braves should make a move for a big bat because they need one. They have needed one for several years yet refuse to address it. Whether the Phils get Oswalt is really inconsequential. As fans does it make us anxious? You bet. But it would be a bad move by Wren to stand pat regardless of whether the Phils acquired Oswalt because there is a need. Just like it would be a bad move to aquire someone if there wasn’t a need to just to match the move. The people I don’t get are the folks who think this team is set with the current group of outfielders they run out there on a nightly basis. Get a bat Wren because there is a need.

“GV, don’t forget the money the ‘Stros are sending though.”

The thing about that is Oswalt still makes $20 million between now and the end of next season. He also has the 2012 $16 million option that the team will receive local pressure to earn. So while the money sent back in the deal seems like a lot, it’s only 60% of what they would have had to pay, or 33% once we factor in the option. In this day and age, those big money contracts have to go to players who earn them. Oswalt hasn’t done that from the 2008-2010 period. If I’m a Phillies fan, I’m livid over the turn of events that took Cliff Lee off the team only to bring in an inferior pitcher later.

GT Fan

July 29th, 2010

CopenhagenBravesFan, there’s multiple theories for that. Among them…

1) The Jays’ clubhouse isn’t as “professional” as the Braves.
2) Being traded jolted Escobar a bit.
3) I don’t think everyone in the Braves’ clubhouse wanted to see the back of Escobar when he first came up. Heck, before last season, the rumor was the Braves wouldn’t include him in a deal for Peavy because they felt he was a cornerstone-type player. Give him some time to wear out his welcome.

From the last blog from buttermaker: “Just a question for the RBI debate. If a player comes up in a sac fly situation and is able to work a pitcher and get a ball lifted to the outfield and another player can’t,doesn’t that say that one player did his job better than the other?”

a) One inferior hitter could get a lot more opportunities to get sac-fly RBI’s than another superior hitter.

b) An inferior hitter with certain a certain skill-set may have a better chance to hit a sac fly than a better hitter. Basically a free-swinger who is not very good overall and who overall cost the team runs may have a better chance to drive in runs via sac flies and such than a better overall hitter.

The team was already struggling offensively BEFORE the Phils got Oswalt. Has nothing to do with Oswalt. Has everything to do with the Braves impotent run production.
