Marlins have pretty much no shot at the playoffs. The will DFA Ross at the end of the year anyways. He’s available or at least should be
Has anyone seen the pitchers we are facing this week?
Cody Ross was taken off the trade block when Chris Coughlan ripped up his knee throwing a shaving cream pie. He’s no longer an option, or at least that’s what Marlins’ GM said a few days ago. Now, if Braves throw 5 minor leaguers at them, they’d probably change their minds… but personally I don’t think Ross is worth more than one good prospect or two mid-level ones. He’s just not an impact bat. Spilbourghs… I’d be more comfortable if he had proven himself as an everyday starter type guy. He’s always been part-timer and platooner.
July 30th, 201012:58 pm
GaryO – Hanson is your answer
Lwe would be the 3rd guy. Cox likes to use vets. Suprised how much confidence he has in Venters.
July 30th, 201012:59 pm
I fear that there’s too much talk on the acquisition of relievers out there. Could that be the majority of the talks that Wren is having?
Does he really believe the offense has what it takes to compete seriously???
Anders you are 20 days behind big guy
Steve from OH
Lollygager–still, he can play CF and has shown a decent bat when he’s played. He’s not perfect, but who out there is? Like I said, Wren wasn’t kidding.
time is ticking still and no moves…not even any rumors or speculations for the braves. this is discouraging…
Rob From SC...Chipper's new BFF, Please call up Freddie Freeman
Hanson is back…Just wait
White Sox just got better
July 30th, 20101:00 pm
Yeh, Our pitching doesn’t really match up for playoffs. Just have to hope that our pitching , defense and offense rise to the occassion or we’ll be out faster than you can blink.
July 30th, 20101:01 pm
Will the White Sox flip Jackson to the Nats for Dunn?
Great. Now Venters isn’t getting suspended after Bobby was declared a genius for using him 2 innings the other night and then again? LOL.
In all seriousnous, that’s great news. Hope Bobby gives him a day off soon.
How frickin stupid do you think Ken Macha feels right about now? I actually think the umpires not tossing the Brewers pitcher (and Macha) the next day, played into it.
But what about Bobby? If Venters suspension was completely thrown out and the fine reduced. What “refund” do the Braves get on Bobby sitting out. His suspension should have been over-turned as well, right?
Maybe he’ll get a “get out of jail free” card, and can come out and completely get in an umpires face, get ejected (all for show of course) and then get to stay in the dugout.
I think Macha should have to sit out a game now, for being such a whiny little bitch over something that the league decided wasn’t that big of a deal.
Nova Scotia Steve
I have a sudden feeling of imminent doom – again.
July 30th, 20101:02 pm
keylargo, so snot offends you about the same amount as rape? gee whiz, man whats wrong with you?
WOW ….Miss Iowa!!!!!!
Man, huge deadline to meet at work and I can’t…quit…reading…the…blog
I need help!
July 30th, 20101:03 pm
managers cant appeal there suspension
I second that.
Also lesson to be learnt for Fielder – perhaps stand in the batter’s box and not on top of the plate.
JerseyGil, man I love Trout, he runs more than Crawford, but no way they trade him for 2 months of Troy Glaus. Anything the Braves get for Glaus won’t be expectacular, but the Angels need a 1B, and I want Freeman in Atlanta, so it fits.
yeah, I meant to qualify that Spillborghs statement… I wouldn’t be opposed to giving him a try, but I’d hate to see us give up too much in that deal. He’s the Colo. version of our Matt Diaz- he hits like wildfire in part-time role, but then maybe runs into trouble as every day guy. Wouldn’t give up more than one guy for him…
July 30th, 20101:04 pm
monty… Hudson and JJ in a 5 game series with Hanson/Lowe/Medlen as 3rd SP is fine
Apparently they are not too high on Dunn. And supposedly Dunn does not wanna go to an AL team and DH. There are few suiters left for Mr. Dunn I think.
July 30th, 20101:05 pm
Not only has Venters’ four-game suspension been rescinded entirely, but his fine also reduced.
Miss Iowa is not bad
I need this deadline to be overwith before I get fired!!!!
What is Frank Wren’s opposition to a big bat?
July 30th, 20101:06 pm
Glaus for Trout…I almost died from reading that
God I heard we traded for Natalie Portman the other day, maybe we could trade down the age scale and flip her for Miss Iowa……. woo hoo…. can she play a good CF
someone was upset at rawdog the other day Snotboogie… so dont let it worry ya
imagine if we nicknamed someone “bareback”… now that might get a rise outta some !
From Joe Sheehan at SI.
The Orioles trade OF/1B Luke Scott to the Braves for SS Mycal Jones and RHP Stephen Marek.
Scott isn’t a sexy name, like Dunn or Lilly or Houston’s Lance Berkman, but he’s as likely to help a new team as any of them are. After getting a late start in the majors, Scott has a career line of .267/.350/.504, spending half his six-year career in the brutal AL East. He’s having his best season since 2006, batting .283/.353/.558 while fighting nagging injuries. He’s a left-handed batter with a track record of hitting lefties, and perhaps best of all, he comes with a low price tag and isn’t a free agent until after 2011.
The Braves just demoted Nate McLouth, who’s having a disastrous season, and continue to fake their outfield situation, turning back to Melky Cabrera to man center field while using a rotation in left. Scott would help bolster that group while also providing, with Eric Hinske, alternatives to the sputtering Troy Glaus (four doubles, no homers in July) at first base. Scott’s disciplined approach at the plate fits a lineup loaded with veterans who know how to work the count.
The Orioles have a ton of nearly-ready starting pitching but little else. Jones, a 23-year-old shortstop, is raw (37 errors, 88 strikeouts in 95 games at two levels this season) with demonstrated skills. It’s an upside play for the Orioles, who also get back a reliever, in Marek, with a track record of minor-league success to upgrade the weakest part of their major-league roster.

If you could pick one guy on the market out there who you felt was the best fit for Atlanta who would it be?
Wow what a lawyer…
Oh, I thought Dunn was still their biggest want.
July 30th, 20101:07 pm
Adam Dunn is outta the NL East. I say good riddance.
July 30th, 20101:08 pm
Braves obviously made convincing case in hearing Tuesday, where team officials/coaches spoke and video was shown of other Venters errant tosses (to demonstrate that occasionally the kid just gets wild).
Me too Bravoman
So basically the PHILLIES face the NATS without DUNN or CAPPS?? WTF??
Prediction: If the Braves do not get a significant offensive piece before the deadline, Freddie Freeman gets called up to share time with Glaus at 1B.
July 30th, 20101:09 pm
is that a done deal or a fantasy deal … Scott to us ??
I’m not nastradamus what that said if you look at one of my post from early yesterday Venters Suspension might be canceled. Thanks god i was right.Anyway DOB from what you are hearing do you expect the braves to make a trade today for a power hitter?
July 30th, 20101:10 pm
Efrim: I think it’s almost a certainty that Kawakami is traded and the Braves pick up part of the tab. Or they acquire a bad contract too, and it’s just a swap of those.
I could see KK being traded. I just think it might be a stretch to assume the Braves will send money in the deal. That rule right there is the only one yet to be squezed. The NTC was squezed with Javy, but paying a player to go away… We’ll see. I’m thinking a swap is more likely.
Stop stealing my posts SCBraves… (see my post from 20-30 minutes ago)
I’m almost in favor of any transaction just to change things up and get the offense going
July 30th, 20101:11 pm
July 30th, 20101:12 pm
It’s Joe’s column on SI on what trades he thinks should be made
That post should have prefaced that
I think it was something he think makes sense. Not even a rumor about it so far. So nothing happening with Luke Scott.
People, that Luke Scott trade did not happen! It was an article about five trades that Joe Sheehan thinks should happen!
July 30th, 20101:13 pm
Why wouldn’t the Nationals do all this trades before the series against the Braves. No Mat Capps, and no Adam Dunn. Now the phillies will face them without Strasburg, without Dunn, and without Matt Capps. I hope at least Jackson gets to make a start against Philadelphia.
Brave4life- 1995 all over again???
D-Backs without Haren And Jackson makes there pitching GARBAGE now
Kawakami hasn’t pitched but 1 time in a MONTH…for 2 innings…I think he HAS TO BE IN A TRADE
July 30th, 20101:14 pm
Wren make a BLOCKBUSTER deal, Bring in a HUGE bat and a SOLID arm.
That is Joe Sheehan’s “5 trades that teams should make.” These are trades he’s made in his head. That’s his proposals that he thinks should be done… that’s what happens when you only read the headline or just the first sentence, people. You got damn-near Rick Rolled.
Brave4life- 1995 all over again anything new from Insider about a braves trade? thanks
July 30th, 20101:15 pm
Actually, Daniel Hudson is a good picther. I think he’ll be better then Edwin Jackson in the long run and maybe sooner than later. They got a good return for Jackson
Puzzles me even more as to why they couldn’t get more for Haren
July 30th, 20101:16 pm
Sorry for not posting the “suggestion” part of Joe’s thread. Didn’t mean to mislead people and think it was a done deal. I guess that’s to be expected with everyone on edge heading down to the wire.
July 30th, 20101:17 pm
Brave4life- 1995 all over again???
Greinke and Guillen = Medlen, Delgado, Dunn, Hyde and Diaz
You get both right there.
Sorry LollyGagger. Didnt see your post.
From Jayson Stark
It’s National Sleep Deprivation Week. I’ll sleep next week. Don’t worry about me. In the meantime, the Braves are still looking for offense. But I’m hearing they’re hot on the trail of Cody Ross again. More info coming up shortly when today’s Daily Rumble gets posted.
July 30th, 20101:18 pm
SCBravesFan, BravoMan – While the possibility of Freeman sharing time with Glaus may appeal to some, bringing him up to the majors will require clearing a spot on not only the 25-man roster but also the 40-man roster. Who would you drop? Surely not Conrad who is a force off the bench and with Chipper’s constant nagging injuries. Would you go with four outfielders, count Infante as your fifth outfielder, and waive Clevlen, I suspect? Maybe so. I’m just sayin’ it’s not as simple a process as some might wish.
Agree BravoMan. Nothing like interjecting a young rookie 1B into the mix. Perhaps a spark.
are we trying to get Hawpe ?
Johnny “rock n roll” Venters… woo hoo
We need to stop the bleeding. (Not to mention the insanity).
July 30th, 20101:19 pm
THat trade did not happen…Bawlmer Brave what is wrong with you
July 30th, 20101:20 pm
What’s our record since the escobar trade? Anyone know?
RIC, I’m guessing Clevlen is kind of holding down a spot on the roster for now anyway in anticipation of a move like a trade or calling up Freeman.
I don’t want ROss…That is making a trade just for kicks
July 30th, 20101:21 pm
Lineup against righties:
July 30th, 20101:23 pm
The decision was made by John McHale, Jr., EVP for Admin. and interim EVP for baseball ops. – Twitter
Wasn’t his daddy the Braves GM back in the Milwaukee era?
Was that on twitter or on espn rumer chat?
How long is Corey Hart locked up for if we trade for him?
I Hate Liberty Media
July 30th, 20101:24 pm
Cody Ross = yawn. What a joke.
July 30th, 20101:26 pm
It is on the SportsNation chat on ESPN.com.
UNCBrave….KK hasn’t been pitching because he sucks. It’s as simple as that.
Remember what Frank Wren said about filling their needs internally? I dont think he was just talking about the OF and Bullpen. I think he was also talking about 1B.
July 30th, 20101:28 pm
Well if Frank Wren was talking about filling needs internally, why hasn’t anyone been called up?
Call-up is in September.
When rosters expand.
July 30th, 20101:29 pm
Pat Rockett, I saw yesterday that the Braves were 6-6 with Gonzalez. That was before yesterday’s loss so 6-7
By then it could be too late
July 30th, 20101:32 pm
I think “too late” will come on Monday…by which time Wren will have done nothing to improve this team’s offense.
My point is, it does not seem like it makes much sense. Frank Wren has acknowledged the problem is the outfield, yet if he really felt like he could fill it internally, why hasn’t he called whoever up right away?
Okay guys. My bad. The winning will start again… I trimmed my beard.
July 30th, 20101:33 pm
Could be your quietest trade deadline in a little while DOB.
July 30th, 20101:34 pm
Shaun C – selfish prick, why didnt you trim it 7 days ago
July 30th, 20101:37 pm
Tommy Hanson and Melky Cabrera for Matt Kemp and Kenley Janson/James McDonald…
That gives us this lineup…
Notice I also am cutting ties with Glaus as we already have an OLD MAN taking up space in the infield…
The Haren trade netted very little for the D-backs because Haren is still owed two years on a $44 mil contract that had escalators. I am sure that the D-backs also had to eat a little money in the deal.
July 30th, 20101:39 pm
I can’t wait for school to start back up so we can get all the kidos off the blogs.
July 30th, 20101:40 pm
July 30th, 20101:43 pm
White Sox still focused on Dunn.
Ok, how do you suggest we fix the Chipper, Glaus, and OF problems?
Here’s story on Venters’ suspension being dropped: http://blogs.ajc.com/atlanta-braves-blog/2010/07/30/venters-suspension-rescinded-entirely/
July 30th, 20101:44 pm
Booze….lots and lots of booze
From Twitter: “Braves’ Wren says still looking: ‘Have had lots of conversations, but there are limited players available at this time that fit our needs’ ”
Because I ineptly signed Lowe, KK, and Glaus, as well as traded for McLouth, I do not trust myself as a master MLB trader or moreso, signer of free agents. I am better at player development more than anything else, and I do not wish to be blamed for a “Teixeira II” debacle, given our team’s many needs: LF, CF, 1B, and either SS or 3B, since both are not hitting with any degree of consistency.
If the bloggers can’t agree on THE BAT and we have no restrictions, how on earth can FW get THE BAT with all he has to think about surrounding the issue.
Bartholomew (Bat) Masterson
I can’t wait for school to start back up so we can get all the kidos off the blogs.
Not McFann and the other good ones, though.
We talk baseball, other sports, music, movies, BBQ and whatever (except politics or religion)
