I’ve got to head on to the airport….I should have time to post the postgame quotes from there. but the gamer, a story on oswalt and a notebook should all be online for you now.
Brave4life- 1995 all over again???Maybe not
July 29th, 20107:07 pm
and if a a piece doesnt become available we’re stuck with what we have ?
They got us this far. I’ll be rooting for them to take us the rest of the way.
July 29th, 20107:08 pm
Thanks for the good work Carroll.
I do believe we’re seeing the “real” Braves right now. Win one, lose one, win one, lose two….
Sad, but it is what it is. Overachieved in May & June.
BravesFaninMD, I think CJ has huntin’ on the mind too. He’s always been laid back, but I’m shocked he seems as lathargic as he’s ever looked this year while his team has been in 1st for this long and it being his great manager’s final year. He has really lost his passion for the game it seems. Plus the fact this is probably his last season makes it even more strange on how bored he looks on the field.
With us playing the Reds, I am really really worried
Is there any way we can get Braun?
July 29th, 20107:09 pm
Later, Carroll. Safe travels.
Steve from OH
Danga–I agree. Sometimes nothing is better than something (crappy).
Danga, they got us this far because they overachieved, but now that they’er coming back down to reality we are in trouble. If we rely on Glaus and Prado to carry this team to the WS we are in trouble.
July 29th, 20107:10 pm
July 29th, 2010
“I think our chances of winning the WS is near 0 unless we can get a power hitter than can drive in runs.”
Damn brilliant assessment! That said, we’re not gonna get that by Saturday. So, jettison the old dead weight (to the bench, Gwinnett, or waivers), and bring on The Youth Movement!!!
July 29th, 20107:11 pm
That would be like us trading Chipper Jones in 1999, Braun is untouchable
July 29th, 20107:12 pm
If you say so BravesFan2010. Doesn’t change the fact that adding a player just to add a player doesn’t make the team better. In his tenure here Wren has been pretty aggressive and done his trade work under the radar. If there is a player that feels a need available, I’m sure Wren will go get him.
Thanks, glad to see someone can appreciate a level-headed approach to things here. I’m not trying to be personal or call anyone out… I’m simply observing and predicting that the same group that is raking Wren over the coals for his “inactivity” right now will be the very same group that praises him for the next big move and how we were smart to wait and not overpay. Fickle bunch, sometimes.
July 29th, 20107:13 pm
99 we still had a chance. brew crew has no chance
Without Halladay the Phils would be nowhere
Danga reminds me of Kevin Bacon’s character at the end of Animal House.
Remain calm… all is well.
So is the deadline 4pm eastern on Saturday or is it midnight ?
July 29th, 20107:14 pm
Just sayin that Wren may have something stupidly silly in his plans. He may pull something from so far “out of left field” that nobody saw it coming.
July 29th, 20107:15 pm
tristan…Doesn’t mean they don’t think they have a chance till 2015 when his very club friendly contract runs out.
Tristan, or he could be satisfied with Gonzalez being our “big” trade.
I’m not a mind reader so I don’t really know but Frank Wren may be viewing the Gonzales for Escobar trade as his trade deadline deal just a couple of weeks early. If so, he might feel less pressure to make a true trade deadline deal.
July 29th, 20107:17 pm
It usually goes throughout the whole day on Saturday.
I must say I’ve been disappointed with Alex Gonzalez’s offensive production in his 12 games with the Braves. 0 HR and 2 RBI’s
July 29th, 20107:18 pm
I gotta run, hopefully we will have Kemp before i am back………right cabravesfan:)
Any chance the Braves will be able to get Pujols once he’s a free agent after this season ?
July 29th, 20107:20 pm
I doubt it BravesFan2010. That contract will be HUGE.
July 29th, 20107:21 pm
Just saw that KK has a no minor league assignment clause in his contract. Boy do we agree to some horrible contracts.
July 29th, 20107:22 pm
I wish Arthur Blank would buy the team. I bet he wouldn’t be afraid to spend tons of money.
July 29th, 20107:23 pm
Like last year, too many holes for one trade to make a difference:
1B – Enough said.
3B – Chipper’s old, slow, inconsistent, & hurt.
LF – Diaz/Hinske – no power or consistency – not the answer.
CF – Cabrera/Blanco – no consistent hitting, speed, or power – not the answer.
Four positions that will not be filled by Saturday, but will affect the Braves negatively for the rest of the season.
C – McCann will tell you he is a better 5 than a cleanup.
2B – Now Prado thinks he has to do it all.
SS – we knew what we were getting with Gonzalez: glove, clubhouse upgrade, not much hitting/OBP.
RF – a Winner! who is staying within himself and performing admirably.
July 29th, 20107:24 pm
The more I think about it…what the heck were the Jays thinking sending Wallace to Houston?
TnBrian @ 7:04,
damn, that was funny.
Is anyone else worried that 3 or 4 years down the road when Heyward is demanding $25 mill a year that the Yankees will take him from us ? I can’t see the Braves ever paying anyone $25 mill a year.
July 29th, 20107:25 pm
Steve…That one made me scratch my head, too.
I can see the Yankees getting both Strasburg and Heyward in the next 5 years.
July 29th, 20107:27 pm
It’s pretty obvious by now that the Braves are going to pretty much live or die with the production (or lack thereof) from Prado, Glaus and Heyward, and getting unexpectedly good pitching from Hanson, Lowe and Medlen. Would another bat help? Of course, but it’s not going to solve all of the problems. Still too many holes to be a WS contender yet. Division or Wild Card maybe. But that’s about all. We just have to hope that thise team’s streakiness will turn itself around as it did from April and early May to mid-May thru the all-star break. One thought that I don’t remember seeing, but may have overlooked… wonder if David Ross has any 1B skills? He seems to have a couple of hits each time he’s in there, which is about once a week.
July 29th, 20107:28 pm
You know, that whole thing about not playing for the win on the road has really been working like gangbusters.
I must say. I mean, you can be disappointed that they didn’t tie it but at least they didn’t win it.
That’s the good thing.
So let’s recap. The Braves scored six runs in the series against three different starters and a handful of relievers, none of whom named Strasberg?
Yeah, I guess that’s about right.
@Sopheee, sorry I stepped away for a few minutes. About everthing. Do the Braves make a move ? Do the Phillies win the division ? How the Braves are playing lately ?
The A Bomb
Well, Joe Saunders survived the 1st inning. Now we can really STAND PAT!
seriously guys, what did you expect from him? have you seen his career second half numbers?
sh8t is just weak… yunel on the other hand:
oh but hes a clubhouse cancer and satan himself blah blah blah blah
wren has to get a bat now. a big one.
July 29th, 20107:29 pm
Some of you might not be mind readers, but I sure know what’s going to be said if they don’t get a hitter by the weekend:
“We feel our club as constructed is a playoff type team and one that can go far once we get there. We feel Glaus can get back to that hitter of May and that Diaz is providing a lot of spark in the lineup since his return. Heyward has also been impressive in his return from the DL. We also love our all around pitching.”
July 29th, 20107:30 pm
Heyward won’t be eligible for that kind of cash for 5 years if I understand this stuff correctly. By that time the Braves will have either a) locked him up to a long term team friendly deal or b) had plenty of time to plan their finances so that they are able to lock him up. Hopefully, Heyward becomes the next generation’s Chipper.
Well, looks like Robot Heyward likes Diaz:
WOULD LOVE TO HARVEST BRAIN OF DIAZ, MATT FOR KNOWLEDGE OF LEFT-HANDED PITCHERS. ANALYSIS: ASSEST TO VALUABLE TO TEAM AT THIS TIME
July 29th, 20107:31 pm
Our team hasn’t improved at all since the Braves made the trade for Gonzalez. If anything, we’re worse.
Sounds about right TnBrian.
July 29th, 20107:32 pm
Deadline is 4pm eastern standard time.
July 29th, 2010
What did you expect? Seriously. Doesn’t surprise me at all.
July 29th, 20107:33 pm
Haha. What is Robot Heyward? That a twitter account?
July 29th, 20107:34 pm
Yeah. Robot Heyward is a really funny one…there’s also a Cyborg Hanson
July 29th, 20107:35 pm
Just got more from Wren on standing pat at the deadline. It just keeps coming! Boy is this guy confident in this team:
“We feel with the way our two hitters at the top of our lineup have been getting on base that it’s only a matter of time before the middle of the order starts driving them in on a consistant basis. We feel Glaus can get back …..” oh, I already said that? “We feel with our depth on the bench that injuries are nearly the factor as it could be.”
I need to be one of those BS politicians, or just a lying ass GM of a pro sports teams.
July 29th, 20107:36 pm
There is just too much uncertainty surrounding this year’s team. Glaus is a big question mark. Heyward is great, but he’s a rookie so you can’t expect him to lead the team. Prado is having a career year, but how long will it last ? Lowe is getting older and not a very good pitcher anymore. Wagner is good, but he’s old and has struggled lately. Chipper is old and struggles defensively at times, and can’t hit like he used to. McCann is a good hitter but he’s not a very good defensive catcher. Hanson is good, but he struggles so much early in the game, and since he’s so young I worry about how well he would pitch in the playoffs with no playoff experience.
July 29th, 20107:38 pm
So Wren is confident that Glaus will get better ? Where doe Wren get this confidence from ?
July 29th, 20107:39 pm
Did y’all read where Chipper says he’s “happy for them” on the Phillies getting Oswalt? That was a condescending line from CJ I hope and that he’s really not happy for the enemy.
July 29th, 20107:40 pm
Nate just Homer at Gwinnett
July 29th, 20107:41 pm
BravesFan2010, no. I was making all that up. I promise, nobody said they were confident Glaus would get better. I just predict that’s what would be said if they get nobody this summer. That’s all.
Brian are you serious ? Maybe chipper just doesn’t care anymore. I think his mind is on the offseason and his future retirement.
money cant be an issue. hell a bankrupt team keeps making trades!
July 29th, 20107:42 pm
Rosson are you talking about the Rangers by any chance ?
Actually the way I took it was that Chipper was pretty ticked off when he was asked about Oswalt and didn’t want to discuss it.
I think he’s pretty PO’ED about how his team is playing right now
July 29th, 20107:44 pm
And Joe Saunders has made it through 2 innings. 0-0.
Wren has now confirmed because the top 2 guys in the lineup project to have high OBPs next year we will also be STANDING PAT in 2011.
July 29th, 20107:45 pm
Nate just Homer at Gwinnett
I hope Nate takes to this assignment the complete opposite way Frenchy did. It already sounds like he is so hopefully he can turn it around. I don’t look at this as bad thing as I didn’t look at Jeff getting sent down as bad, I see it as an opportunity for the guy to right whatever has been wrong with him and I hope he does for our sake.
Yunel lost the frosted tips
Bartholomew (Bat) Masterson
Remember last week and the week before, when people here were making fun of the Phillie’s and Met’s bloggers? I do
Still a little chippy from Thursday’s loss, Braves third baseman Chipper Jones sounded like he was in no mood to start worrying about the Phillies and Oswalt.
“We don’t play the Phillies until late September,” Jones said. “Good pick up for them. I’m happy for them.”
July 29th, 20107:46 pm
I knew it! I knew it!
McLouth is a lock for the AAAA All-Star Game!
Way to go!
why are we looking at adding a reliever? o thats right only three of the guys down there get used
July 29th, 20107:47 pm
Good times, Bat. Was that only a week ago?
McLouth just homered in a game for Gwinnett?
Frosted tips or not, I miss that guy
Oh there is a AAAA now ?
July 29th, 20107:48 pm
yes i was talking about the rangers
July 29th, 20107:49 pm
Breaking News…Braves Call up Mcloud.
I thought he got rid of them when he was here? I also think he has braces, maybe thats why he didn’t smile much….
July 29th, 20107:51 pm
Jake – did he? I didn’t know that. And Yunel got the braces? Good for him!
July 29th, 20107:52 pm
Hey Soph, wanna cyber?
July 29th, 20107:55 pm
Danga _ yeah good times. Maybe two, of course the past few days have seemed like a month on the old blog. I, for one would rather ride the roller coaster, than be stuck on the platform watching others have all the fun.
Joe Saunders through 3!
Must be nice to have a lefty in the rotation.
July 29th, 20107:56 pm
The only move the Braves need to make to keep up with or stay ahead of (like it will last) the Phillies is to drop kick Terry Pendleton’s @$$ out of town.
If there’s anybody in baseball who deserves to be fired, it’s not the Pirates’ manager, not the Astros’ or the Brewers’ or the Orioles’. It’s the Braves batting coach.
I’m sick of this bulls***. There is every reason in the world to get rid of him but the Braves sadly don’t carry themselves like a real business. A serious results oriented business would have fired him years ago. The Braves are like some hippy commune that just wants to make everybody feel good about themselves.
Does anybody seriously benefit from their boss kissing their @$$ all the time? If I’m Derek Lowe… well, if I was Derek Lowe I would quit effective immediately and refuse to accept any remaining money I’m owed by the team… I don’t get anything from Bobby telling reporters how well I pitched or what bad luck I had.
How is that constructive? The best teacher I ever had, I greatly disliked. He wasn’t a bad guy but he never patted me on the back or was particularly supportive in any way in a class that was required a great deal of out of classroom work. He absloutely got the best out of me because I wanted to prove him wrong and that I didn’t need his help. I really wish I had more experiences like that.
I’ve just never been the type of person to respond to the kind of excuse making Bobby Cox doles out on a daily basis. How does that make a player want to perform better when his manager will just end up covering for him if he F’s up?
To call Bobby old school is ridiculous. I’m surprised we don’t hear about him giving out little blue participation ribbons.
If the Braves were American Idol, he’d be Paula Abdul. We need a Simon Cowell.
And yes, I just said that.
I have been asking all day…what are you guys and gals worried about? Gregor is on his way in a couple of days!
July 29th, 20107:57 pm
No truth to the rumor that McLouth was taunting Blanco in Spanish as he was rounding the bases during his tremendous accomplishment this evening.
July 29th, 20107:58 pm
“Where is Dave O’Brien ? I don’t care for this new person too much.”
What a piece you must be. I bet you wouldn’t be that rude if you were in person.
First of, this Carroll Rogers is top rate, she’s not the DOB but who is.
Try the Hawks blog- that guy takes a break so they don’t post for 3 weeks.
This lady does the in-game stuff, posts the quotes, a lot of the DOB-esque stuff that I bet she’s not required to do.
Also, you guys are wringing your hands around here like a bunch of old women. We’re in first place have a cow.
July 29th, 20108:00 pm
Listen, don’t hijack my name ! If you are hating, you hate else where !!!
Still can’t believe the Astros…awful deal for them.
July 29th, 20108:01 pm
What business are you in?
its funny. watch the highlights of escobars plays that hes made. hes having fun. hes having fun for a team that has only won 30 something games. he wasnt having fun when he was here? we were winning? whats up with that? short leash?
July 29th, 20108:02 pm
Philly don’t hit lefties all that good, so if Arz can squeeze in a few runs they have a good chance here. Big game. To still be 3 1/2 up after tonight would be huge. Come on D-Backs!
Gregor, Gregor, Gregor!!
July 29th, 20108:03 pm
Did we stuff Willingham into a suitcase, equipment bag, anything and take him with us?
July 29th, 20108:04 pm
Tomahawk Talk, because Yunel is getting attention up there and he’s eating it up.
July 29th, 20108:05 pm
Well look at the brightside of the Oswalt trade, braves usually fair better against righties than lefties and we did not have good numbers against that Happ guy.
“Hopefully she says, ‘Oh, he was a cool guy. He looked like a low-budget Vin Diesel, but he’s nice.’ ” – Miguel Batista on meeting Miss Iowa, Friday
July 29th, 20108:06 pm
He didn’t have the frosted tips the day he hit the grand slam. Over a week now I think.
July 29th, 20108:07 pm
lol. That is funny Couch Tater.
July 29th, 20108:08 pm
How many games are left with the Nats ? Anyone ?
Mitchell: has Lou Pinella ever won a WS?
How about Buck Showalter?
Fact is, the problem here is not Bobby…
You can’t make a silk purse out of a sow’s rear. Wanna blame someone?
Blame Liberty Media, as well as Frank Wren for two stupid signings – Lowe-tard and KK – and a moronic trdae for a mediocre bat – McLouth.
Those three salaries alone have hamstrung the Braves into making moves like trading Javier Vazquez and signing Troy Glaus.
Can’t make pork sandwich out of pig sh!t.
July 29th, 20108:09 pm
Yes, Sweet Lou has won a WS. 1990 with the Reds.
We talk baseball, other sports, music, movies, BBQ and whatever (except politics or religion)
