Postgame comments following Sunday’s loss to Marlins

BOBBY COX

On McLouth’s double play:

“The last one was absolutely a bullet. Nate couldn’t have hit the ball any better, a Screaming Mimi that was right at (Hanley) Ramirez. He hits it softly, they can’t turn it. He hit a bullet.”

On Jurrjens:

“JJ pitched a heck of a game. The four runs in that inning were just stupid runs. A dribbler up the middle, a dribbler to the right side, a hit-and-run dribbler and one ball hit good – (Wes) Helms. That was it, four runs. I thought he was outstanding. Just a shame that we lose that game.”

CHIPPER JONES

On thwarted bases-loaded chances:

“That was the story. We left a ton of guys on hitting into double plays. We had a chance to really bury them there in the first inning popped up and couple double plays late. We should have never been in the extra-inning situation (if) we take advantage of our opportunities, which we’ve been really good at doing for the most part of the year. Just didn’t happen today for whatever reason. You let the other team off the hook that many times, eventually they’re going to cash in and beat you.”

On McLouth’s double play:

“The ball was middle way, he hit it right on the button just right at somebody. It’s kind of a microcosm of his whole year.”

On losing their first NL series since early May

“It’s never good to drop a series especially when you’re within the division but we played well. A bounce here a bounce there we sweep the series. We feel good about the way we played. We keep playing solid baseball we’re going to win a ton of games. We’ve just got to find some holes, or find some outfield with the bases loaded and less than two outs. Maybe we’ll have a little different outcome.”

JAIR JURRJENS

On the pitch to Helms:

“I slipped, lost control of it and left it over the plate. The whole inning started bad when the umpire missed a pitch on Hanley – a 2-2 slider – I thought it was a strike. Everybody thought it was a strike. When you give a guy like that an extra pitch he’s going to take advantage of it. Then I lost my control a little bit, slipped, triple. They played a hit-and-run. Just bad luck.”

It’s crystal clear now that we need to aquire a solid center fielder. No doubt in anybody’s mind that Nate is, and will continue to be a huge hole in our game.

Carroll,
Just want to point something out to you: when you blog and say “Have to like our chances with {fill in pitcher’s name} going,” the Braves typically lose. I am superstitious. But, it has happened frequently, though.

I do appreciate your bloggage, though.

Bobby just STOP IT!!! Stop the madness. McOut should never seen a meaningful AB the rest of the year and today’s AB’s were 2 more too many!!!

Also, inserting Jessie Chavez into a game that isn’t a one sided blow out is like waving the white flag of surrender…

This time I do not like Bobby taking up for Nate!! Bases loaded with 1 out, his job was to get the ball in the air for a sac fly, not hit a grounder or line drive, giving the Marlins a chance at a double play to end the inning. The count was 2 and 0, hitters count, no excuse for a grounder at all. You pick out the next best pitch and put it in the air. How many games have we lost since he came back and was in the lineup as a hitter. I knew this was coming because when he rehab at Gwinnett, his numbers were terrible. Something like 1 for 4, or 1 for 5 every game. His game has gone south for some reason only he knows why?? Blanco needs to be promoted and Nate released!! Forget Ross of the Marlins, he showed nothing this series at all. Give the CF job to Blanco, Infante to shared with Melky!!

Why was Infante on the bench when he hits over 300 against right handers? We brought him in after Nate hits into a D.P; makes no sense to me why a 165 hitter is batting with the bases loaded and a 300 plus hitter is not, Chavez can not come in when the game is tied as he cannot handle the pressure, this loss is once again on BOOBY.

First, the obvious. McLouth sucks. Although I am starting to think he is not even good enough to suck.

Second, just because the Braves are stuck with his contract does not me they have to play him. Or is THAT in his contract??? Of course not. Wren has made solid moves since he has taken over but everyone has one that backfires. McLouth is a trade that just did not pan out. He sucked last year. He sucks worse this year. Let’s cut our losses…pun intended… and move on. Bobby fielded a very successful outfield for the glorious month McLouth was out. Chemistry was good. Everyone contributed. Braves rolled. No need for a big money/big name trade for the outfield. Our 5 game lead was built while Nate was in la la land.

News to Bobby: McClouth sure as hell could have hit the ball better. If he has to be in the lineup he should be prohibited from swinging the bat if anyone is on base. At least that way he won’t hit into a double play and there’s a slight chance he could walk.

Chavez throws hard(94-95), a very straight fastball. He has no second pitch(slider, curve or changeup). He needs to go down and develop that 2nd and 3rd pitch, in order to be effective in the majors. Or they will continue to light him up in the bigs, he needs COACHING bad, to develop these pitches.

Maybe somebody in Braves’ management will notice that McLouth has the lowest batting average of ANY National League outfielder with at least 200 plate appearances–by over 50 points! Nothing personal, but the guy has to go–at least to AAA until he gets his groove back.

Nate McLouth

Problem is: McOut is on a major league contract. He can’t be sent down unless he agrees to it. They’ll have to put him on waivers or trade em for some bats and balls.

And McOut strikes again. Who swings at the 1st close pitch on a 2-0 count when the guy pitching has just walked the two previous hitters and why? Nate “the only way I could hit a ball is if it was sitting on a tee ball tee and even then I might still strike out” McLouth needs to go back to the farm team. During the game last night the announcers said that he is 6 for 63(not including today’s disasters) since his return from the DL; at this rate he’ll be hitting .000 before we know it.

Gary, yes it is. Francouer is just as sorry with the Mets. They are trying to trade him now (given up on him, also). Mclouth deemd to only perform for losing teams, Can’t handle the pressure of producing for a competitor. As for JHey, the thumb injury could be the reason for the power outage. Not saying TP is all that, but Prado is dominating in avg. and power from the leadoff spot. TP won:t get credit for that, though.

Chavez got burned on some good pitches. Can’t fault him for this one.

Nate McLouth, however, should be burned at the stake, er, I mean, cut from the team. Like, yesterday. If the Marlins were looking at him as a potential outfielder, they’re probably looking elsewhere by now. Gotta cut bait.

JT

Here’s an interesting stat. Here are the bottom five batting averages in the majors for hitters with at least 130 AB:

Andruw Jones – .202 in 203 AB
Willie Harris – .194 in 134 AB
Ryan Church – .188 in 165 AB
Garrett Anderson – .181 in 144 AB
Nate McLouth – .169 in 183 AB

Anyone notice a pattern?

We can only hope that McLouth joins the others on the list as ex-Braves. I was really pulling for Nate, but he isn’t getting it done and is hurting the team. He’s not even making up for the lack of offense with stellar defense–and there have been too many times that he hasn’t even tried to make a throw.

I hope Nate gets things turned around… but we can’t afford to let him keep trying here. Get it together in the minors or on another team….

This team with so much promise is in serious trouble. Bobby Cox why wait please retire now, you sent down .300 hitter Gregor Blanco to make room for Mclost. Blanco can drag a bunt. Mclost is your latest pet. Cox would rather be liked as one of the boys than make a decision that must be made, and whiled I’m pissed why not put David Ross at 1st and play everyday. The team can’t carry 2 or 3 .150 hitters. Play those that are hot and let the rest fight it out, Do you remember being puzzled when the Nyets released Billy Wagner out of the blue last year, do you think they knew something? Relax, boys. This was the perfect weekend because the games we lost and could have won took the bloom off the rose just in time. This team is good, hard working, solid top to bottom, but after the pseudo-euphoria of the last few weeks everyone saw the gaping holes during these two losses. Wren/Bobbie being able to simply correct it ain’t so easy, but at least they can’t pretend any longer. The team needs another piece or two. Time to get real serious about that, and the lesson came just in time. Wren might have stayed back if we took two from the fish or swept them, but now he knows he can’t. Be thankful we missed out this series — for the action it brings between now and August 31. Still gotta win in October no matter what the moves, and what to do with major league contracts he wishes he didn’t have — oy, tough one if you’re Wren. But let’s let him figure it out, because he saw the same thing we did. It’s possibly just a tad harder for him to move things around than it is for us to blog about it. I love this team, and hop it can be finally shaped for the big flag.

I wonder why he was given a green light instead of a take sign. I prefer when there’s a take situation for the batter to take. Don’t batters know how to work a walk? I want runs without swinging the bat. Why swing when you don’t have to. That being said it’s too early to give up on Nate. Melky is no bargain. We seemed to play better with the dynamic that Blanco gave us out of the 8 hole.

Call me Crazy but we need to trade for a real outfielder AND a starting pitcher. It would allow us to put Medlen back in the pen which would keep Chavez out of Games. McLouth…now in Norton country…and I swore I would never say that name again!! His first atB he somehow manages to pull a pitch and screws up…then..yes I understand you usually want to drive the inside half of the ball (jeter) and stay back…but when you have a 2-0 count and the pitcher nails the outside corner- that is a PITCHER’S PITCH…leave it alone you clown…it’s like the one time you get to come out of your shoes waiting for a “get me over” fastball that floats middle-in…this conversation is college stuff…take the pitch, at worst it’s 2-1. That said…were like 16 games over .500 and got a three game series against a sub .500 team, take 2 on the road and then were 17 over .500… I’ll take it!!
