Braves clubhouse after Friday’s walk-off win by Marlins

BRIAN MCCANN

On the passed ball:

“I don’t know how I didn’t catch that ball. The play has to be made. I don’t know. I didn’t make the play. I have no clue how it didn’t go in my glove.”

Frustrating given the multiple comebacks:

“We played a good game. It’s why it’s so frustrating, something so easy as catching a ball…it’s hard. It’s hard right now.”

On Chipper Jones’ comments that the Braves wouldn’t have been in the game if it weren’t for him:

“Means nothing. It’s the game. It’s the ninth inning, bases loaded two outs. My job is to catch the ball in that situation. I’m anxious to see the replay because I don’t know.”

CHIPPER JONES

On McCann’s feeling like he lost the game:

“We wouldn’t have been in the game, if it wasn’t for Mac. Couple guys in there in the ninth inning had some control trouble. You walk guys, you’re going to give up runs. (Wagner) has pitched great. It’s very atypical.”

On the wild offensive night:

“You wanted the last at-bat tonight,” Jones said. “That’s all you can say. It was one of those games where funny stuff happens and in those situations the team with the last at-bat gets it done. We battled hard all night, we played good, we swung the bats good, played good defense, just couldn’t get it done in the ninth.”

On coming back in the series:

“We blew one the other night and bounced back and won in decisive fashion on Sunday. You hate to keep having to bounce back like that but this is where we are. We’ll show up tomorrow and strap it up again.”

BILLY WAGNER

On regretting the leadoff walk to start the ninth

“No not really. Wes (Helm) is a dangerous hitter and if you get too giddy with him trying to make good solid pitches….3-2 fastball in just missed. That wasn’t what beat me. It was the ball to the backstop, just about everything I did was wrong. I wanted it where he could catch it.”

On whether the ankle was or is a factor:

“No, I’m fine. I’m good. (Shoot) if I did get hurt, it might be a good thing.”

On the frustration of losing after multiple comebacks:

“We played well. When you come down here, you know it’s tough. Situation like that you’ve got to make pitches. They’re scrappy. They find a way to do it, you can’t give them opportunities to do it and that’s exactly what I did.”

DEREK LOWE

On the first inning homer to Dan Uggla:

“It obviously wasn’t where you wanted it. It’s still the first inning. You figure you have a long way to go. The walks probably added up a little bit there in the sixth inning but we found a way to battle back.”

On the Marlins:

“They’ve been playing really good of late. They’ve had a lot of games like this where they’ve come back and won. They clearly are starting to get some confidence in late innings and they had a couple pinch hit big hits, one in the sixth and one in the last inning. So any time you can fight back, get yourself back into the game, it gives us confidence. But with that being said we’ll come back tomorrow like we have all year and find a way to claw back and get a victory and go from there.”

BOBBY COX

On comeback opportunities:

“We hit some balls right at them. (Hanley) Ramirez made two great plays up the middle that could have been game-winners for us but they made some plays.”

On the passed ball:

“I don’t know happened. He missed it.”

On the wild nature of the night:

“It was crazy. Derek pitched a heck of a game, had a ton of pitches for six innings but he still had his stuff.”

Walks DID hurt and always do to the leadoff man in the last inning. Make them hit it and give your team a chance to make a play.

McLouth has been the problem all year…maybe they should just leave him here and make him “accidentely” miss the flight to DC…

Not to pin it on him, but Alex Gonzalez not coming through with the bases loaded and one out (after Diaz got hit to give us the lead) really hurt. Sure, that borderline pitch (called strike 3) was probably a ball, but the game could have been put away there.

Additionally, he also failed to move up the runners earlier in the game (runners on 1st and 2nd, no out). I know he did get hits in other situations but these small things need to get done.

Lowe goes 5 and 2/3 and gives up 4 and he gets “heck of a game”. Huddy goes 7 and gives up 0 and his complement is only slightly better than that … “Huddy did a great job today”.

And I can see Lowe still has that attitude that allowing runs is ok

Isnt it ironic that the CF that the Braves traded for last year to replace the slumping Schafer has been slumping ever since he arrived in the ATL??
On the bright side , two thirds of ” Lethal Weapon 3 ” were promoted today to Double-A Mississippi.( Delgado / Teheran )

My humble suggestion to Braves management:

1-Keep McClouth on the bench as insurance, he’s like a Frenchy in that he is going to be hard to trade and get something back…use him soley as insurance.

2-Until Billy Wagner reestablishes his command, have a Plan B to close a game where the pitching coach sees his current malady grabbing hold of him–yank the guy before the thing goes south.

3-Get that Blanco kid back here A.S.A.P.

4-Chipper Jones should be batting in the 5 or 6 spot–when he plays.

The trade deadline can’t come sooner, as far as I’m concerned. I just want Wren/Cox to showcase McLouth and get it over with! It’s obvious the kid can’t play with a winning club. It’s high time the Braves signed Ross, promoted Blanco, or gave the CF job to Melky.

we had great opportunities in first several innings but then up comes mclouth……
WHY is he allowed to play?
Cox cannot stand success; he had a winning lineup and he has to screw it everytime. this year can’t get over with soon enough but pray we don’t get another manager like him.
when mclouth plays we can be guaranteed to lose or so it seems. am sorry for McCann….he carried the whole team and then, crap, got human like and missed a pitch. IF SOMEONE ELSE BUT MCLOUTH HAD BEEN PLAYING WE WOULD HAVE BEEN SO FAR AHEAD THAT THE BALL MCCANN DIDN’T CATCH WOULD NOT HAVE MATTERED.
Bradley gave reasons we wouldn’t lose our lead [I think it was Bradley] but I don’t think he put mclouth in the combination. our lead will continue to shrink and shrink. tis a shame; what an exciting time; what great winning line up. cabrera or blanco are so far superior to mclouth it boggles the mind…..ooops, sorry…everybody’s mind but Coxs.

Nate is getting 4 or 5 games to show what he’s got and if he still stinks it up then Bobby will sit him and for the rest of the season he will basically be used as a late inning pitch runner/defensive replacement. At this point no one will take a trade for Nate.

It was a great game, you can’t win ‘em all. Wags is having a tough time right now but he’s still the best closer we got. Gonzo has been ripping it and he can’t be expected to bat 1.000 in all situations. Lot of baseball left, heck, even McLouth might get it on track and start pulling his weight.

Why didn’t we have a quote from Nate McClouth about being hitless and stranding 5 baserunners. HE is LOSING games for us from time to time. Cut the guy. He doesn’t have what it takes to play major league baseball any longer. He’s done. Why is he on our team? Why is he STARTING for our team?

B-Mac, don’t beat yourself up, Chipper was right, there is no bottom of the 9th but for you. And you didn’t put those runners on base.

This is where age will get you – the dog days. Chipper 38; Glaus 36; Wags 39 (?). Gotta rest some guys. I thought Saito was brought in to spell Wags as the closer now and then. He ain’t no spring chicken – are we seeing him less because he has lost velocity, command or both?

Platoon Hinske and Glaus (righty/lefty). Let Venters try his hand at closing a game. O’Flaherty should be over this viral whatever soon – I hope – he’s our situational lefty. Infante should see a few more games at 3rd.

Why the heck is Diaz not in left every game (if his hand is OK today, I hope)? And Melky in CF? (By the way, nice throw to 3rd last night Melky, you got a gun — too bad ol’ Chip dropped the ball, couldn’t tag him AND let the batter advance to 2nd.)

I enjoyed the play by play posts last night under the blog about Schafer. Nothing else to do here in Gwinnett.

AND WHAT THE HELL AM I DOING DOWN HERE ON THE FARM, ANYWAY? McLouth sucks.

Ask the Mets about that 7 game lead they had at the beginning of September a couple of years back that cost Willie Randolph his job. The sky is not falling, these team is too good except McLouth to panic, but we do need to close out these games, especially when you have a team that shows so much heart to be able to come back so late so often.

Gregor, I do not know why you’re in Gwinnett. McLouth does suck. Whoever posted that McLouth is a black hole in our lineup hit the nail on the head.

Someday in the future…after Francoeuer has “hung them up” after “hanging on” in MLB as long as he can, I suspect that Frenchy will admit that his vision has been troubled and deteriorating for several years. The doctors will confirm that his face/eye-socket fracture suffered back in his minor league days has progressively caused problems with his ability to “track” the flight of thrown pitches at the MLB level.
Yes, his failure to “tame” his “aggressiveness” at the plate may be blamed for his hitting woes. But let’s face it, Vladdie G. is even more aggressive and he has and continues to do quite well with his “free-swinging” approach, thankyou.
Similarly, McClouth probably can’t see well enough to hit MLB pitching either. No further mention of his spring season admission that, “I couldn’t see the baseball so well last season” has been made.
Watch Prado (or even Chipper, when he was/is hitting well) – observe how many pitches that they are able to “spoil” at the last instant, particularly with two strikes in the count. They are able to follow the pitch all the way, and as it breaks down and/or away from them, they are able to “flick” the pitch away foul. Not every single time, of course. But most of the time. McClouth and/or Francoeuer never show this ability. They seemingly can’t track the pitch and react at the last moment to “protect the plate” as do those superior hitters who “see” the pitch along its flight all the way into the hitting zone (or at least much further and deeper into the hitting zone).
Combine vision problems with McClouth’s “upright, stand-tall and swing-big with too early top-hand release” approach: result is what we have seen for past season or so that he has been with Braves.

It will be interesting to see how much longer McClouth experiment continues – much depends upon whether Braves can win with him in lineup producing nothing at the plate. I am sad to say it, but McClouth is probably “out” sooner, rather than later. Wren seems emboldened by recent successes and likely will find some way to “quietly” include Nate in a deal somewhere, to somebody.

My concern is Wagner seemed to shy away from his fastball…so many sliders to Helms led to the walk, which started the inning for the Marlins…if he was tired and no capable of the 95 – 96 mph fastballs that he relies on, Venters should have been in the game…

We will have to give up one of our minor league pitchers with McClouth + pay all his salary this year to get someone to take him. What does this do for us? It gets rid of his 6.5 million salary next year from our payroll which is a big deal. Melky and Blanco are better than McClouth or anyone else we can get. Get rid of the dead wood. Another arm for the Bullpen would be nice too. More important than another bat. Wagner is 39 and coming off Tommy John surgery, and Saito is 40. They need some rest.

McClouth McClouth; Gonzo, Gonzo; BMac, Bmac. Funny – - not a word about Peter giving up the homerun immediately after we tied it.

bad game all around for the most part. way to many runners left on base, moylan and lowe throwing the ball right down broadway on 0-2 counts which resulted in homeruns, mccan’s pastball, to cox bringing in wagner and leaving him in when he clearly was not locating for the second strait outing. to sum it up it was a group effort in last night’s loss. BAD GAME! but it happens.

An important mark of leadership is putting people in a position to succeed. Bobby hasn’t done that in recent days.

I don’t know how to explain his insistence on leaving Chipper in the 3-hole. Nor can I explain leaving Wagner in when his fast ball clearly lacked zip, and he could’t locate his breaking ball.

Sometimes excessive loyalty to an aging player only puts the player in a position to fail.

I agree with everyone, McLouth should not be playing at the major league level. He can’t hit and is constantly trying to pull the ball with an uppercut swing. As far as bullpen help is concerned, Steve
Marek at Gwinnett is having a very good year and could be used as a setup man to give Moylan
and Venters a break. Kimbrel will also be brought back once he improves his control. Billy Wagner
needs some rest. Also why does Bobby bat Chipper in the #3 spot when he can’t hit for power anymore? Bat him eighth or better yet play Infante.

To everyone scratching there heads as to why McClouth is starting: The braves are just giving the guy a chance to show whether or not he can help the team make that final push to the playoffs. They are just giving the guy every opportunity to prove he is MLB capable and will be able to contribute to the team winning. Can’t say I blame them, he is recovering from serious injury with potential to help and becomes a cheaper solution without costing any propects or messing up team chemistry. However in the 3 games he has returned he has failed miserably. In 9 AB’s he has scored 1 run (as a pinch runner), 1 strikeout, 0 RBI’s, 0 walks, 1 hit, left 7 runners on base, dropped his batting ave from .177 to .173. The Braves have lost 2 of the 3 games since his return (winning the one he did not start). With just 7 games left until the trade deadline McClouth would have to get some kind of HOT to secure his spot in centerfield the remainder of the season.I just don’t see it happening especially when you consider the problems he had before the injury this year.I foresee Wren making a move to add to the production from the outfield. Whether or not McClouth is included in any trade is questionable, he could be beneficial off the bench as a pinch runner or defensive replacement in the playoffs.

When Wagner gets tired his fastball seems to be 93mph instead of 97mph. I noticed in the last two blown saves, that when he is over used, he loses velocity. Bobby is going to hurt the team if he doesn’t go with multiple closers the rest of the year.Wagner can’t pitch 3 out of every four nights and be effective. He was throwing 98mph after the all star break but is now looking tired.

McLouth is the worst “starting” outfielder the Braves have had in a very long time. Everyone else who have stepped into the outfield lineup has played great this year. Wonder how those players REALLY feel about Nate coming back and getting right in the line up to: flyout or strike out or the occassional ground out into a double play…usually with runners in scoring position. And to think they got him as a leadoff hitter!!! He has absolutely NO characteristics of a leadoff hitter other than he is fast. But you have to get on frickin’ base to be able to use the speed. Horrible swing. Bad eye for the ball. And this is not just a 2010 slump. Just look at his great year last year with the Braves. Unfortunately, some some strange reason, they feel compelled to use him because of his contract. He should be a last inning defensive substitution for some mediocre AA team.

Nate needs to go and the sooner the better. Wagner looks tired…just his body language says so. 2 blown saves this week…we could have an 8 game lead right now and this thing would just about be over. McLouth’s situation is not unique in sports or life. Once prolonged defeat is experienced, he lacks the mental strength to recover and return to success. On the big stage, at the big moment, all he can do is flail at pitches with a wild upper-cut swing. No amount of coaching or practice is going to correct it; he is the only one that can do it.

Absent a murders row, the Braves need production from batters 1-8. Pitchers can work around those that give them problems and get to sure outs in 8-9.

Whatever the cost is to remove McLouth from the 25-man roster for the balance of 2010, it is outweighed by the cost of keeping him on it. There are other options within the organization and outside that may be obtained at a reasonable cost.

The problem is, the Braves have given life to the Philly and NY. If Waggs takes care of business, the Braves would be on a 5 game winning streak, and would be up 8 games in the NL East. Now, the Phils are looking much better (they knocked out Jimenez in the 3rd today). Philly was close to dismantling their team and throw up a white flag on the season, but now they are going to at least try to make a major deal for a pitcher. I think that NY is going to continue to fade. I do not completely blame Billy, because the Braves continue to not hit with RISP. It is sad that our offense can only score 2 runs in that 9th inning. After Mac tied the game, we had the bases loaded with one out, and only got one run because Diaz got pegged on the hand. Then 2 Ks in a row. Now, the strike 3 call on Gonzo was complete BS. The pitch never caught any part of the plate. Omar just looked foolish on his strike out. The Braves do not make pitchers pay when they put men on base. The team strikes out wayyy too much in big situations. I am not confident that they will get that problem taken care of. I fully expect to drop 2 of 3 in this series because of the crap they pulled last night.

Stop the panicing, people- the BEST teams in baseball lose 4 of every ten- the Braves are fine.

That being said, I still am bumfuddled by Bobby’s insistence on running Nate out there. He is a mental basket case, with no chance to succeed. And on top of that, everyone runs on him mbecause either he can’t or he won’t throw- is his arm hurt?

Gregor Blanco in the 8 spot is like an extra lead off batter- definitely a better option than McLouth.

We old-timers know that Cox has always had a favorite who plays despite not producing; Tommy Gregg may have been the worse, but there is always someone. Norton and McLouth are just the most recent in a long line of non-producers who play anyway.

Guys I looked on here to see if I am the only person in the world that was of the opinion that Nate was bad!! it shocks me to see that is is making 5 million, and is hitting 173….It is one of two things in my opinion, either he was on the juice when he put up the fat stats, or he has a cocaine problem…. he was troubled long before the collision..The front office needs to bite the bullet and ship him out. He is the worst major league player I can ever remember watching… He is awful, when he cashes his payroll check he should be arrested for theft by deception.

Don’t trade too fast! Worst ATL Braves trade ever made = Justice and Grissom for Kenny Lofton. Wow we lost two of the best post season clutch hitters that the ATL ever had for an ageing and complaining Lofton!

Hey now – Bobby has a 6 game lead and he is a CLASS GUY so he will give a veteran player “a chance” and not throw Mclouth under the bus right away. But “a chance” may be over quick if we do not keep winning.

Win one more for Bobby GO BRAVES!
