Quotes from Braves after 12-inning loss

BOBBY COX

On Billy Wagner

“Yeah, he’s been perfect. He just got some balls where they shouldn’t have been thrown, I guess. The one to right field hurt us, it was kind of insided-out, half-jam, half-hit. That hurt.

“He’s been almost perfect all year, stats just off the charts.”

“We had some opportunities. Nate lined out once with a guy on, would have been a three-run advantage. And Chipper did the same thing, lined out to second base with a guy in scoring position.”

On Tommy Hanson

“Tommy got better. I don’t know why his slider always picks up after the third or fourth inning.”

On Medlen

“The first hit, the guy hung across the plate and hit it into left field. Little semi-liner. The other one was a bad pitch, a hanging change-up, I think.”

On Saito not pitching since July 11

“His shoulder had bothered him some, and we were able to wait this long. He threw terrific tonight, just same old Saito.”

On Chipper, did he have recurrence of hamstring problem?

“No, just getting Infante in the game.”

On McCann

“Mac’s swinging great. I’ll rest him tomorrow. Rossy will catch tomorrow.”

Medlen still on for Saturday start?

“Yeah, he was going to throw a long bullpen tomorrow. So this worked perfect. Didn’t turn out perfect, but it works perfect [for making start Saturday].”

BILLY WAGNER

“It’s never a good night [when you blow a save]. You know you’re going to give up runs, but…”

“I tried to throw a fastball up and away and kind of pulled it. It was up, but middle, to the first Hairston. Torrealba, the pitch he hit was a pretty good pitch. The only pitch I regret was not getting the fastball [where he wanted it] and giving them some momentum.

“Just one of those nights where I didn’t have enough to get it done.”

Kind of game you expect from two teams with NL’s best records?

“The Padres, against the teams I’ve played for, have always been tough. I mean, they’re scrappy, they always hang around your games, and tonight was that typical situation where, if you give them just a little bit of an opening, they’re going to find a way. And tonight, the Hairston brothers did enough to get it into extras, and they made some things happen. They’re a good team.

“It’s one of those nights that didn’t go our way, but we’re still very confident.”

Easier to take when you’ve had a season like you’re having?

“No. This is a big game. You win this game, you win the series and you play for the sweep tomorrow. Now we’re in a situation where tomorrow’s a bigger game, for both sides.

“I don’t think you can ever brush those games off. It’s tough to swallow when you know you had this game in hand, and it slips away.”

BRIAN McCANN

On Wagner

“They jumped on his fastball. Looking back on it we probably should have thrown more off-speed pitches, but, you know, Wagner’s been lights-out all season long. This is a 162-game season. He’s been awesome all season. Stuff happens.”

On losing after leading late

“This is baseball. You play 162 of these, it’s going to happen. We need to come back tomorrow and win a game.”

On Hanson’s rebound after rough two innings

“He pitched great. Seems like once he finds his release point, he’s a different pitcher. Tonight he struck someone out in that sixth inning at 97 [mph]. It was good to see him come out and perform the way he did.”

On winning the series, more important because Padres have best record?

“No, it’s not. It’s too early for that. We just need to keep going. We played a great game tonight. We need to come back tomorrow, and we need to win.”

On Padres being similar to Braves

“They didn’t quit tonight. They battled. It was a great played game from both sides. One big hit was going to win it.”

TOMMY HANSON

“I felt a lot better those later innings than the first couple of innings. Felt a lot better with my fastball command. After those first couple of innings, everything went pretty good.”

“It was just my release point. Everything felt good coming out of my hand [after the first couple of innings]. From there on I was making pitches where I needed to. That’s pretty much it.”

On the second inning, three consecutive two-out singles including one by the pitcher

“To Garland with two strikes, that was kind of a get-me-over slider. Being able to get him out would have helped out a lot, but it didn’t happen. I’ll just try to keep going, keep trying to find my release point and make pitches.”

McLouth does suck — and I’m not talking about his hitting. I predict that Wren will trade him come the deadline and it will probably have more to do with his laxidasical play in center field. Tonight, he allowed a triple when, if he had come up trhowing after fielding the ball, could have nailed that runner at third. Now, that run didn’t score tonight but come the playoffs, you don’t want a guy who’s not “buying-in”, meaning playing ball the way Atlanta Braves play baseball.

Look at what Melky did last night gunning down a runner trying to score. Jordan Schaffer and any other CF worth their salt would have at least tried. McLouth…. well, eh would have just put the ball in his pocket (like he has done on three other occasions) and allowed that run to score.

I called the Esobar trade and now I’m calling this one — though, I think everyone knows he’a a gonner. I don’t hate Nate McClouth at all, I’m just saying that he’s not good enough to be an Atlanta Brave if he’s not going to “buy-in” on effort which is a halmark of Brave baseball.

..And David Ross is a great catcher that we are lucky to have — notice that I didn’t use the term backup catcher to describe David Ross. This guy could start on any other club in the show. Now, of course, he’s not hit as well as he did last season but that’s not what we need out of Rossy. The whole purpose of having Ross is to rest Brian. We have others on the team that will pickup his for McCann’s absence.

Joe West,

Tomorrow’s a day game so that’s why McCann will be out. It’s pretty hard to catch 12 innings and then turn around and catch another 9, in the Atlanta heat, just a few hours later. Things like that catch up to players late in the season and hopefully we will be playing long into October. Plus Ross is a good backup as well.

If you are talking about chemistry with players from 1 – 25, just bringing up McClouth and sending another player down is playing with chemistry issues. And when you factor in just how awful McClouth has been, it further magnifies the issue. I also feel that Medlin was improperly used tonight. He hasn’t pitched for quite a while and then is thrown into a tight game in extra innings. He has been stellar in a starting role and Bobby doesn’t need to do anything that will shake his confidence.

The way Nate keeps pocketing the ball like that…I have to wonder if something might not be wrong with his arm.

In any case, he’ll be gone soon. I sure would like to have the Marlins’ Ross. I mean, did you SEE that catch he made last night?! Still, I hope we don’t have to give up Dunn.

Ed: “McClouth” and “Medlin” they ain’t. It’s “McLouth” and “Medlen.” Now go stand in the corner.

Normally I don’t weigh in on here, but “Fan since 1977″ drew my ire. Don’t take this as a defense of McClouth, he has been terrible but give the chance a kid in the second half. If you’ve truly been a fan since ‘77 (which I havent, I’ve only been alive since ‘87 but still) then you understand the hardship this club has face over the years.

There was a time not so long ago claiming to be the best team in the NL as a Bravos fan was laughable at best, then we hit the stretch of victories that led us up to 2005. We have been average at best in the last five seasons.

I think it’s time for Braves fans to sit down, shut up, let Bobby Cox manage and Frank Wren make the calls. For better or for worse, this team is better than it has been in the last half-decade because of those two men and if the Braves really gave a damn what you thought, I doubt you’d be posting “First” on here every twelve hours.

I’m not one of the “Sky is always falling” Braves fans, but we need to upgrade our outfield defensively. I’ve never seen so many balls hit off the warning track in my life (we’re talking season, here, but this game was a good microcosm). The line Nate took on that ball was atrocious. He looked like “Skates” (true Braves fans will know who I’m talking about) out there. Even Melky gets handcuffed, breaks late, etc. He usually catches the ball but it’s a frightening thing to watch. I really feel that the best CF we have is Blanco. Who isn’t a CF by trade. Get someone who knows how to play the dang position. If it stays in the park, isn’t a “gapper” or a defense-breaker (you’re playing the guy to pull and he hits it to the opposite field), and has some air under it, it should be caught. Period.

Also, James Roach, why do you want to “give the chance a kid?” Is this some kind of movie you’re pitching? 3 men and a baby meets baseball? Just having fun with you. I agree with your general point–Braves fans do need to shut up Re: Cox, Wren, and most of the players. But if we’re going to play good pitching, good smallball, and juuuust enough offense to get the job done, we need a CF who doesn’t look like a deer in headlights on a hard hit but catchable fly ball.

Is it just me or does Troy Glaus look hurt? Since June 20th he has 0 home runs and only 4 doubles and his average has dropped 23 points. I know he has had knee & back issues so maybe it’s time to put him on the 15 day DL for some rest because if either of these are bothering him it would explain the drop in his numbers. The rest did wonders for Jason so why no try it on the old guy.

Why was Medlen pitching instead of KK if Medlen is Saturday’s starter. Medlen looked like our best starter before the break. Why mess around with skipping his spot? Cox should not make unnecessary defensive changes at the end of a game because it shortens our bench. I understand why Cox walked Salazar to force Black’s hand. But if Salazar gets a hit it’s a one run game instead of a two. Also if they get Salazar Heath Bell isn’t pitching in a save situation.

Since today is the anniversary of the Battle of Atlanta (1864), it might be appropriate to reflect that Jefferson Davis replaced Gen. Johnston with Gen. Hood, saying that he “failed to arrest the advance of the enemy to the vicinity of Atlanta, and expressed no confidence that he could defeat or repel him.” I’d have to say something similar about playing McLouth in center field. He has failed to defend his position in the outfield, or to launch offensive operations when given the chance at home plate, and therefore should be replaced with Blanco, Cabrera, or Infante.

Starting McClouth the same day he was activated after coming off DL, when team had been winning using Cabrera and Blanco in lefty/righty matchups, tells me Wren wants to (1) see if McClouth is salvageable as a member of this team the rest of the way, or (2) showcase to teams that he is healthy and can play in center field to preface a possible trade. Both needed to be done before the trade deadline so look to see McClouth in lineup again today.

Joe West, the same reason you sit Matt Diaz who hit homers, what, in three straight games? Or send Blanco (batting .300) back down for McLouth (batting .170). Or take Mike Dunn out after recording the most important out of the game at that point last nite, then running out of pitchers.

Should I go on? That’s our Bobby.

In this series, Bobby’s suspension replacement is 1-0, Bobby is 0-1.

This game was a bust on so many levels.

1. Medlen doesn’t deserve a loss here, Wagner does.
2. McLouth is going to screw up the chemistry of this team by just showing his face.
3. This team didn’t take advantage of moving up another game on the teams trailing us in the division.

Simply put, a good team kicks another team while they are down, and a great team puts their foot on that other teams necks and keeps them down. So right now I will classify the Braves as a good team, not anywhere near a great team.

What a golden opportunity last night. Up by 2 runs in the 9th with one of the most dominating closers of all time coming in and who does he let tie the game up? The damn Hairston brothers and Torrealba. When you hear of a Padres comeback in the 9th, you normally look for names like Gonzalez and Headley, not those other guys.

This game right here will be one of the few that the Braves will be looking long and hard at come the end of the season when they are on the outside looking in. When the Braves lose the division lead and are down by 2-3 games, this game will be one of the major ones that should come to mind. We are not talking about a 1 run lead in the 9th, they had 2 runs to work with. No excuses here, the Braves just simply dropped the ball in this one (No pun intended)

Then to have to catch again in the miserable ATL heat/humidity today? No, you rest him, let him come in late in the game if you need a boost, but it’s a long season and we need him healthy for the postseason.

Last night was a non-Brave-like loss. Usually, we win those kind. Oh well, Wags hung up a fastball and I would love to see him come back out today and finish it off. We win the series. All that we can ask for…keep winning series. :)

And I will say that I haven’t had too many disagreement with the Skipper this year, but last night I felt STRONGLY that we should have pitched to the guy in the 12th rather than force them to use their last position. You have to play to win it in the 12th, not forcing them to lose it in the 13th.

Also, Dunn came in at one of the most critical points in the game and got the out! Then we never saw him again. My brother did bring up a good point, however, that you build on confidence with a rookie and take slow steps….so letting him come in that one BIG out was huge for his psyche.

If we win the series today, then all is well again. Huddy should bounce back. He always has this year following a poor outing. :)

It’s a conundrum right now about what the Braves should do as to whether to pursue a trade. Medlen had been discussed in talks for Corey Hart, but with Hanson’s recent inconsistency that absolutely should not happen. Kawakami is obviously too expensive to attract any interest whatsoever (especially with his record), but right now he’s taking up a valuable roster spot that should go to an effective pitcher (the same goes for Jesse Chavez, who seems to portend disaster every time he comes out of the bullpen). I’m sure the Braves will be watching McLouth very carefully for the coming few days to hopefully indicate whether he can return to a competent form, but considering that Cody Ross seems to be the main guy in trade rumors right now, frankly I’d stick with Diaz and Cabrera/Blanco as the starters rather than trade away a valuable piece like Dunn. Ross simply isn’t an upgrade to Diaz, especially the way Diaz is hitting right now. Bullpen help is thin right now across MLB; the Braves could use that to their advantage to get the right player at an acceptable price.

Didn’t see the game last night, listened to some of it. It sounds like we had it until Wagner coughed it up. I think that is only his third blown save of the year so I am not complaining: I think he will continue to do a hell of a job.

One thing though Keith,

Had the Braves did their jobs last night, we already win this series with today going for the sweep or at the very least a series win. Now that they coughed that game up, we could very well lose this series today. Nothing is guaranteed, so when you have a team down by 2 runs in the 9th, put them away, its, as simple as that. Either the case, when you are up by 2 runs in the 9th and the teams trailing you in the division have either already lost or about to lose, you get the job done, you don’t choke. What will they do when they are put into these situations in the playoffs?

I can assure you that the Braves were not scoreboard-watching the Phillies game. That had no bearing on them losing this game. They blew a lead in the 9th. Over a 162-game season it’s bound to happen.

Jesse,

It doesn’t matter, they choked. This team is supposed to be different right? They had a 2 run lead against a team that hadn’t scored since the 2nd inning in the 9th with one of the most dominating closers of all time on the mound. They choked, plain and simple. Now if we were down by 2 runs and couldn’t tie or win the game, then that is another story, but we were up by 2 and had a golden opportunity to separate ourselves from the rest of the division.

Mariano Rivera has blown saves. Every pitcher blows saves. What’s the point?

This team is supposed to be different, you say? NO, EVERY TEAM BLOWS SAVES.

I will bet that 99% of World Series Champions in baseball history have blown 9th inning leads.

Yes, a loss is bound to happen in the 9th every now and then, but this team can’t afford to sit idle while the Mets and Phillies lose. The one thing those teams can do that the Braves can’t is add high profile players for the stretch run which could end up being the deciding factor in who wins this division. When you have an opportunity to put a very good team like the Padres away like they had last night, you do it.

If we got paid big bucks at all of our jobs and we screwed up, how long do you think you would have a job? Not to long is my guess. These guys have one job to do, and they get paid extremely well to do it, that is all I am saying.

If this loss was from a lack of effort, you’d have a point. Wagner is an all-star cliber player that blew a save. Baseball is a 162 game season. You move on

Who cares about Mariano Rivera? I am not a Yankees fan and could care less what they do or don’t do. I am a Braves fan, and get pissed off when they blow a great opportunity like they had last night. Blowing a save and losing the game are completely different. Yes he blew the save, but if the Braves would have still won that game, the blown save is a moot point. He blew the save, and they lost the game, so he didn’t do his job. Now if these players were paid on a game by game basis, that would be a completely different story.

People come on you can not blow this out of proportion,Waggs had a bad night,I think it his 2nd blown save all year,he didn’t try to blow a save, remmeber Dan Kolb.we just win the game today and go on.

Hinske & Jesse, you’re both right. The Braves choked, blew the save and failed to score in 3 extra innings. If we’re going to be a dominant team, especially in October, we had better cut that out.
Every team blows saves, dominant does not mean perfect, so, even though it was kind of heart breaking, let’s get over it and get a win today.

I’m going to the beach for a couple of hours. hinske, you can sulk and bang your head against the wall over last night’s game. The sky is not falling and we willplay again in a couple of hours.

Yes, everyone will move on from that game, but do they have to be laughing and having a great time to show that they are moving on? This team hasn’t been to the playoffs in 4 years, I for one would love to see them back as Division Champions and in the playoffs. They won’t get to either one with blowing games like they did last night.

Hinske Da Man

Again, they blew a save AND the game. Had we still won that game, the blown save is cast aside and forgotten. The fact that we had a 2 run lead in the 9th and 3 outs away from putting the Mets and Phillies in the rearview mirror, that is what irks me. No there is nothing I can do about it, but it still pisses me off as a fan nonetheless.

So let me ask this, what will everyone be saying if the Braves lose today, and not only lose this series, but the Phillies and Mets both win today? That would be the difference of winning a series and losing a series, and gaining a game on a division rival, or losing a game to a division rival. With the Mets and Phillies, you can’t afford to give them motivation this late in the season. Both of those teams have already proven in recent seasons that they can still win the division with being 8-10 games out in August and September.

Last night’s game was proof enough that the Braves need a bat. Other than the franchise in right field, our outfielders were a combined 1 for 9. Will Melky ever get the ball out of the infield?

If we trade for a big bat, wouldn’t it probably be a Right-handed hitter, to offset Heyward and McCann? If so, then he would not have started last night vs. the right handed pitcher. We have Matty Diaz hitting like crazy, HR’s in last 3 games, on the bench because of lefty/righty platooning.
My point is, I don’t want to put too much hope in another bat, especially if it cost too much in prospects.

Wow, I can’t believe how many knuckleheads are freaking out that we blew a save. Jesse, I don’t know why you even bother. Some people can only live in the moment and not see the big picture. Should we demote Wags to AAA because he’s blown a couple of saves this year? WTF? NOBODY CAN SAVE EVERY GAME! This team is different and if they stay healthy they should make the playoffs and then let the fun begin.

Chill out people, jeez. McCann caught that whole game and needs a break. That keeps him fresh and Rossy needs his regular AB’s, too. Same for playing Hinske last night, I am literally Matty D’s biggest fan but players need to play or they get rusty. We’ll bounce back, today, go Braves!!

Yeah it is disappointing seeing Nate in there not even wanting to throw when Melky just saved a run at the plate a couple days ago. Whats worse at this point, Nate’s production or that contract when trying to deal him? Well he isnt playing today so who knows.BTW i had a good laugh during that play because i was on the Padres broadcast channel and Dick Enberg kept saying. “What a great play by Merky Cabrera!” He called him Merky about three times before the guy corrected him. Im so used to hearing Dick Enberg doing AFC football games that i forget he does baseball too.

Jesus Christ, Hinske and other armchair managers and fair weather fans! What you don’t know about baseball seems to be a lot. Quit your whining, Henske. Blown saves and games HAPPEN!!! They aren’t going to win every game. There are no perfect players that deliver a hit everytime or strike everyone out they face. LOL!!! GET A LIFE!!!

DOB – could you help me out about last nights game? When McLouth failed to throw out that guy at 3rd how come the runner wasn’t credited with a triple or McLouth an error an double?
