Braves’ quotes after series win vs. Padres

BOBBY COX

“We split with Milwaukee and took the series from San Diego. So if you can split or win series, you’re doing a good job, I think.”

“Huddy did a great job today. He groundballed them to death. And watching Gonzalez play shortstop the last few days has really been special. He turned some great double plays, and he had a good day offensively.”

“We hit the ball pretty good today. Chipper drove in a couple with a couple of hits.

“It was a good, hot day to play baseball, believe me. I couldn’t see a pitcher going past seven today.”

On the hustle in the 7th

“Yeah, we always do that. Our guys beat a couple of balls out. We didn’t really crush the ball that inning, but we added runs.”

On Hinske’s injury

“Hopefully Hinske’s going to be alright for tomorrow’s game. It hit right on top of the foot, the worst spot. For him to come out [it had to be bad]. The X-ray was negative, so hopefully he’s be OK. He’s a big part of our club.”

More on Huddy pitching so well in the heat

“It was hot, man. The heat index was 106 when the game started. That’s hot. There was no cloud cover today at all. He kept the ball on the ground and gave us a chance to get double plays, and we did it.”

On Prado’s series:

“He’s not in any slump at all. He’s hitting the ball normal.”

On Gonzalez’s six straight hits

“I didn’t know that. That’s pretty good. He almost caught Diaz.”

On Heyward

“Couple of nights ago he really hit the ball well. Today he had a base hit, but the balls got in on him a little bit, I thought. Jason’s always hustling, always helping you win games, even when he’s not hitting. But he’s getting his hits.”

On doing it without much from Prado and Glaus

“The first month we had five or six guys who weren’t hitting at all. Now you can depend on almost everybody getting a big knock.”

TIM HUDSON

“We’ve got a long road trip ahead of us. It’s going to be a tough trip, a lot of hot places to play. But it’s going to be nice heading into this trip knowing that you split a series and won a series at home.”

On not giving up a run in three of past five starts, what’s been key?

“Just going in and making pitches down in the zone. Letting those guys behind me make plays. You try to throw it so they can hit it, but not hit it too hard.”

On Alex Gonzalez’ initial impression

“It’s great. I tell you, he’s been a breath of fresh air, both on the field and in the clubhouse. Great teammate, which we heard that before we got him. Defensively he’s been outstanding. We knew what we were getting defensively. And offensively he’s definitely carried more than his weight.

“It’s great. Good luck to Esky [Yunel Escobar]; I’m sure he’ll find his way up there. But I know everybody around here is really happy with what we have.”

On today’s win and series win

“It helps you stay confident, helps you kind of ride that momentum and confidence that you’ve been able to build up the first half of the season and so far in the second half. After losing last night, if we’d have dropped this one, I’m not saying it would have killed us confidence-wise, but it’s definitely one of those things where you want to get off that little bit of schnide and get to playing some good baseball.”

“You have to have a short memory. Last night was one of those games that doesn’t happen to us too often, but they do happen. Good baseball teams are the ones that can put it behind you and go out the next day and play some good, clean baseball. We were able to go out and do it today. Everybody pitched in.”

“It was important to go somewhat deep in the game today and give [the relievers] a day off.”

On pitching in the heat

“If you don’t make sure you hydrate the day of the game and the day before, it can zap you. I felt fine during the game. We did what we needed to do to stay hydrated. I’m sure some teams that come in and aren’t really used to it, come the fourth, fifth, sixth innings, their starting pitchers are running out of gas and don’t really know why.”

MATT DIAZ

“We wanted to have a winning homestand, and it came down to the last day to do it, and we did it.”

Braves’ win-series mantra that comes from Bobby Cox

“You just can’t get too high or too low. Last night could have been devastating. They came back against one of the best closers in the league and won a game. But the fact is, we still had chance to win the series and that’s what we set as our goal going in.

“If you set your goal to win [all] seven games in a homestand and you get disappointed, you’re probably going to have a letdown. We set our goal to have a winning homestand, and we still had a chance to do that today and came out and did it.”

On upcoming trip

“We have a really favorable home schedule coming up. We get to be home almost the whole month of August. So knock out this road trip, hopefully have a successful one, then come home.”

On doing it on homestand without a lot from Glaus and Prado

“Early in the season, I along with a few other people, were awful. Prado and Heyward kept us in it. Heyward, myself, other people go on the DL or are not productive [for a while], and then Prado gets hot, Troy gets hot….

“Chipper told me today was his first three-hit game all year. So we’ve done this without the captain of our team having a three-hit game. That speaks volumes about the depth of our team. We’re going to get hot and cold individually, but it seems like as a team we’re so deep that we’re always going to have two or three guys hot who’ll carry us.

“Then it comes down to Bobby knowing the players the way he does, and not only plays them but puts them in spots in the batting order where they can contribute. It would have been really easy for him to put me in the 8-hole coming back off an injury, but he felt the momentum that I had after the first game in Philly against Cole, and started putting me in the 6-spot and 5-spot. That’s where Bobby’s at his best, just reading his players and knowing how to use them.”

On Alex Gonzalez

“Big addition. Playing behind him…. People doted on Yunel’s range, and rightfully so. He had a ton of range. But not only does Alex have the range, Alex positions himself to get rid of the ball quick. He may not have Yunel’s arm, but he gets rid of the ball so quick, and he’s got a very strong arm. It seems like it’s an easier ball for Troy to catch.

“Watching him turn double plays with Prado – playing behind that is just fun to watch. I’ve got to be careful, because next time there’s a ball between third and short, I may not charge it. I may just expect him to make a great play. Which he probably will, but I can’t just expect that.”

On Heyward beating out bases-loaded, two-out single in the four-run seventh

“Again, this group of guys is not sexy but it’s solid. We play the game the right way, we pitch the right way, we challenge hitters.”

CHIPPER JONES

“I think if we come out and putting emphasis on playing well in the first game [of a series] and then relaxing for the other two and just playing solid baseball, then we’ll be successful.”

On others picking up slack with Glaus and Prado not carrying team lately:

“There have been little streaks where guys have gotten hot and carried us and contributed quite a bit. But if it’s not Prado or Troy or Heyward, it’s Diaz or Infante or B-Mac. Just right on down the line. This team, the more and more I look at it, reminds me of the ‘95 team. You don’t have the guys that are leading the league in any category, but you haven evenly distributed production throughout all 25 guys.

“More times that not, those type of rosters with that kind of production are going to be successful.”

On the lead going into this trip

“It is what it is. We’re just going to concentrate on going out and continuing to win series. We’ve got two division rivals and another team on the backside [Cincinnati] that was just in first place. We’re going to see some good pitching from Strasburg and a bunch of those guys from the Reds. It’s comforting having that lead, knowing that one game is not going to ruin a series or ruin the trip. But we want to continue to play the kind of baseball on the road that we have here at home.”

ALEX GONZALEZ

(Said he once had seven consecutive hits in ‘07)

“It feels great, especially when you win the series.”

On his first week with new team

“I feel very good with this group of guys. I feel like I’m part of the team. Got to keep going, man. Keep winning. I want to try to help this win the division, go to the postseason and try to win it all.”

On his defense

“That’s a big part of my game. Even if I go 0-for-4, I can play good defense and try to help the team that way.”

Well i dont know whats going on with Bobby but hes starting to drive me crazy. Where in the world has Conrad been in all of these clutch situations?? Is he being punished for not being voted into the AllStar game or something? I love the Braves as much as I could love a team, and they are the best team in the NL so theres not much I can say, but come on Bobby.

Man, Huddy’s comments about Gonzalez about sum up the success of that trade. Any Wren second-guessers still out there?

It was blatantly apparent, however, that we are showcasing Dunn and McLouth. Like Matt Diaz needs a pinch runner. He’s one of the faster guys on the team. Although we do not need a trade as much as we someone to take on certain contracts, the appearances of Messrs. Dunn and McLouth in the game were solely for the benefit of the Marlins’ advance scouts who want to get something for Cody Ross. Too bad Dunn couldn’t find the strike zone with a map. Thank you, Peter Moylan, for putting out that fire.

Great, great win, and we were able to give B-Mac and Wags a rest. Total team contribution. The best play was Heyward going from 1st to 3rd on Chipper’s single to left in the 1st inning. Led to the first run. Great hustle.

Go Bravos!!

Good series win for Atlanta. We be at a quality opponent in San Diego. I know talk on the ajc website from many Braves fans has centered around trading for a power hitting Outfielder.

I was listening to Fox Sports radio this evening and they mentioned the L.A. Dodgers possibly putting Andre Ethier on the trading block. What are the chances the Braves could trade for him? He is a power hitting outfielder is he not? DOB, any reason why we could not go after a guy like Ethier?

DOB –

I asked Bradley this, but unlike you he apparently keeps bankers’ hours. Any doubt in your mind that the past 2 days we were simply showcasing Dunn & McLouth for the Florida advance scouts, since they are interested in dealing Cody Ross?

Thanks.

Good win by the braves. Gives them 4 out of 6 for the season series and the one loss in sd was the jj game and we all know what happened last night. Also if the braves and padres end up tied for the best record, i believe the braves would get the nod because of their win in the season series. Go braves.

If we make a trade, lets please not give up the farm. It’s not like we really have to anyway….make a trade that is. Medlin should be untoughable unless for overwhelming circumstances. Big Red has hit a rough spot in the road and Medlin may have to cover for him in the starting rotation.

The late afternoon show on Fox radio said, with the McCourt Divorce getting really nasty, L.A. may be selling pieces off of the team. It’s no secret Torre wont be back next year. Just kinda thought he would bring some pieces East when he comes to Atlanta to manage.

In the post season its about match-ups and right now we are a little short on offense ( I know we won today 8-0) but the team that I see as the team to beat for us is not San Diego, its the Cardinals. Their line up is full of hitters and we would see Wainwright and Carpenter 3 or 4 times in a 5 game or 4 or 5 times in a 7 game series. No doubt we have a better bench and bullpen. But staying pat will make me think of 04 or 05 teams that had enough to get there but nothing else. Plus if the Phillies get hot and make the Wild Card they will be dangerous too. So we need another bat. Cory Hart or Josh Willingham is who id go after.

Boatdoc

J-Man: I agree with your assessment, and the Cards scare me the most in the NL for exactly the reasons you give, but I don’t feel strongly that the Braves need another bat, among those cited as available.

While Heyward was down we really missed his bat, but it was just as frustrating that month he flailed at the bat and his average fell from .301 to .247 at the AS break.

I also hated hearing the national guys asking “does this open up the Rookie of the Year race”, esp with Strasberg coming on the scene.

I was reassured on one show where I saw Harold Reynolds and whoever was with him BOTH agree that Heyward was STILL the leading candidate for ROY, and since he has returned he has hit .348, with a couple of doubles. The individual honors are by far secondary to winning the pennant, but wouldn’t we all like to see the kid get it?

On the “must get a bat” front – I don’t figure the Braves to make a move unless it absolutely looks like Nate has no chance to return to a productive state. It’s easy to forget that although he was an All-Star for the Pirates just 2 years ago, his lifetime BA is only about .258 (close to the MLB average). I KNOW Nate takes a beating on this blog – far more than any fellow human being deserves – but I also believe if Frank Wren and Bobby Cox think Nate can hit .258 the rest of the year, they’ll take it – and not look for another bat.

Yeah – I’d LOVE to see Ethier and J-Hey and Diaz in the same outfield. I’d also love to have a time machine to go back and kidnap 1957 versions of Hank Aaron and Willie Mays.

My point is: I think if Nate looks like he’s going to hit .180 the rest of the year, he’s gone, but I’m not expecting the bat we get in return is going to be Crime Dog or Tex stature.

If the Cardinals win the Oswalt sweepstakes then I agree they are the team to beat, but despite winning 7 out of their last 8, Cincy is hanging with them. Their lineup (save Puhols and Holiday) is overacheiving.

Philly is panicking. They will do anything to get 2 starting pitchers in the next 9 days. They will end up dealing Werth for next to nothing. Serves them right for dealing Cliff Lee.

WE DO NOT NEED A TRADE. We just need to unload McLouth’s and KK’s contracts.

rebman76 -

There is a reason Freddy Gonzales is not managing or coaching anywhere right now. We have quietly locked him up for next year. Your boy Torre will most likely retire. He has already managed the Braves (1982-84). Me thinks you heard some ca-ca on Fox radio today.

McClouth was indeed an “All-Star” but that was only because he was the best player on a terrible team and had no business up there with the real ALLSTARS. Thats a rule I hate that every team must be represented. If the game has World Series implications then THE BEST and MOST DESERVING players should play.McClouth has taken a beating but when your hitting under .200 and playing subpar defense thats gonna happen. And yes this team needs another bat, Because at the end you still have to play the Yankees.

I have a few thoughts on the Braves. I think Bobby is doing some of his finest managing this year. He has really used his roster beautifully. With the exception of a couple of pen arms, he maxes that roster. Which brings me to my next thought: I think Id like to see the Braves send a pen arm down, and bring a position player up. I know with Venters suspended it may be tough now, but we have 2 arms that really dont even play. I dont think Ive seen KK in a week, and Dunn should be done. Not a huge fan of Blanco going down, but it is what it is.

J-Man,

2 years ago when Nate was selected as an All-Star, Fukudome was voted an OF starter and Corey Hart was selected (even though he didn’t have to be, because Braun had been voted a starter also.)

Nate .276 26HR 94 RBI – led NL in doubles with 46
Fukudome .257 10HR 58 RBI
Hart .268 24HR 81 RBI

No – Nate’s numbers were not Hall of Fame numbers, even if he repeated his “career year”. But it would not be correct to say he was the worst selection to that OF-poor NL team. At worst, he was only the third worst outfielder.

The actual question for Braves management is: will ANYONE else they get give them more for the rest of the year than Nate, and will whatever else they have to give up hurt them too much in the long run.

Fan and bang – any chance you can take your mutually immature spat outside?

Boatdoc! You are an eloquent writer. I could have used some of those back in the day. I’m simply stating McLouth is not the answer in center field. Why not put your fastest and strongest outfield arm in center? That would be Mr. Heyward. Get another outfielder for some young pitching prospects (we have more than can ever play for us!) — and you are solid up the middle. Poor Nate will just have to spend his ridiculous salary in some other town. Hello, World Series!!!

Boatdoc

George – Heyward seems ideally suited for RF – but you bring up an excellent point: since he seems to be the premier outfielder on the team, period, don’t you want THAT guy playing Center?

George H. W. Bush

July 23rd, 2010
12:18 am

I would think so, Boatdoc. We ALWAYS put our fastest and strongest arm in center field. Many reasons for the Braves to do so. He’s a lefty. Left center gap covered. Would have to back hand the right center gap. No problem. He’s that talented. Plus, center fielders field more balls that any outfielder on the team. Aren’t we all taught to hit it back up the middle?? He could turn would be doubles into singles — and most importantly — with a man on first — on a ball hit to him — would completely shut down the chance of that runner advancing to third. Little fundamentals like that win many, many ballgames. Wish I could have thought of all this kind of stuff when I was in office………..

I’m sure Bobby loves those responses. He wants to win series, help the team win the division, and he knows no matter what his offensive production is for the day, he can always play good defense. If that’s not orgasmic for Bobby… I dunno what is.

While I respect Bobby Cox for all his accomplishments, I disagree with the “win series” philosophy and think a “go for sweeps” one would be better. Wednesday’s game might have been won with better strategy in the eleventh inning. McLouth should have been pinch-hit for by Lowe, a better bunter, to move Conrad to Second. Hudson (.262 ba) should have pinch-hit for the pitcher who followed by Prado (.317 ba) gave us nearly 6 chances out of 10 to drive Conrad home and end the game with a win.

Boatdoc

Mr. Prez (I voted for you – twice – by the way): I agree with everything you said, although there is definitely the thought to put the strongest arm in Right because of the throw to third. Many precedents for that from Babe Ruth to Reggie Jackson to right here with Hank and Frenchie.

I DO wish we could put a Kemp or Ethier in our outfield – but I worry that there’s really not THAT much available, esp compared to what we might have to give up to get “only” Cody Ross, for example. All I’ll say is – if Ross is about to have a good series…. I hope he’s wearing that beautiful scripted “A” on his cap.

Boatdoc

Nevada – I like you’re thinking on the pinch-hitting situation, although I’ll concede my 20/20 hindsight is not superior to Mr. Cox’s knowledge. I think the “win series” thought might produce a little more relaxed clubhouse atmosphere than “must win every game and sweep every series” thought. Since the best teams EVER have lost 50 + games, I think the ability to come back from a loss – esp tough ones like that middle Padres game – is more productive than the thought that ANY loss represents failure.

Boatdoc. I can’t sleep, either. Retired and nothing to do. The game has changed. I can’t remember the last time I saw a right fielder throw a ball to third without hitting a relay man. How hard can that be? Chipper just said he sees very few left fielders who can make the throw to third base for crying out loud! I remember when the league had far less teams — and only the best players could get there — out fielders routinely throwing runners out at the plate. On a rope, just a bit above head high, and not a single one hopper (it’s getting to be two hoppers nowadays) in sight!! I miss those days. But it was grand to watch real baseball players playing the beautiful game of baseball……..

George – it’s not insomnia in my case. I’m over on the other side of the world trying to help preserve the fighting strength.

I’m hearing you on the throws from the outfield. I was AT the All-Star game at old Fulton County back in 1972. Reggie Jackson was the RF for the American League. Billy Williams was on first and Manny Sanguillen hit a ball into the gap up against the R-Centerfield wall. Reggie picks up the ball at the base of the wall, turned, and threw it to Sal Bando. Bando caught it – ON THE FLY WAIST HIGH STANDING ON THIRD! Williams was safe, but the crowd went “ohhhhhhhh….” from Jackson’s throw.

Willie Mays and Aaron and Willie Stargell were the starting OF for the NL in that game. I wish I could have seen Willie back in the ’50s. One of my FAVorite things about “The Catch” wasn’t just the fact of the catch itself, but that Willie IMMEDIATELY was able to turn and fire a laser from DEEP Polo Grounds (which was like 590 feet back in those days) and hold the runner at second.

bigboi – I don’t know how often i’ve seen a CENTER fielder throw out a runner trying to score from second base on a routine single.

Barry Bonds couldn’t throw out Sid Bream – in a leg brace – from LEFT field… probably 30-50 feet closer than Melky.

I won’t be sad with a platoon including Melky playing CF for us the rest of this year.

If so many venters have much more baseball ability and knowledge than Bobby Cox why do you suppose he is a baseball manager and they are burger flippers who want to super size that order and spend their free time touching the keys on a computer?

DOB: Quotes from the SS? How often did that happen before the AS break? I’ll bet AG makes the beat writing job a touch easier, too.

anybody else notice our boy Chipper not running with 2 outs when Matt D. hit the ball that the right fielder misplayed? He is a lazy dog and I find it ironic that he always spouts off about “playing the game the right way” Yeah right Chipper. Lets recap: Defensive liability, awful base runner, .250 singles hitter….. 15 million dollars/year not exactly the definition of good bang for your buck, huh?

Joe -

Yes, I noticed that, he pulled up at 2nd to turn around and watch the play when he should have been busting it and picking up his 3rd base coach. I do not know if the stop sign got thrown up, though, since you never make the third out at 3rd base. He scored, anyway, so all’s well that ends well. And he is the league’s most expensive “injury” prone singles hitter, but it’s not his fault Wren gave him that deal after he won a batting title. He has contributed since the retirement talk; he just doesn’t have the power stick anymore, which is why evryone is screaming for a “big” bat. He can help this team this year. Still has the highest OBP on the team.

To Justin…… Conrad has been great, but he is a bench player. The Braves have the Best Record in the NL, give the man “Bobby” some credit.. “Read the quotes from the players” So if you were Bobby you would start Brooks in front of who? Prado???? He has carried the team all year. Uh… Gonzo at short or Chipper at 3rd??? As much as I can see that !!! Infante deserve’s as much or more than a chance as Conrad.

Agreed, Hawk! Love Brooksie, but let’s not forget who he is. He’s not better than Prad, Sea Bass, Chipper, or Omar. He’s done a GREAT JOB when called upon as a spot starter at a number of different positions, pinch hitter, pinch runner, and late inning defensive replacement.

What I really love reading is Matt Diaz calling Chipper “our captain.” That is exactly what he is, and
he is always helping this team, even if he is sitting on the bench. He is invaluable in terms of leadership and experience.

Cabrera threw out Kenny Lofton at the plate on a long strike from mid-depth CF in the 2007 ALDS. I remember seeing it on ESPN several times. It was memorable.

A strong second half could propel Heyward to the ROY award, and he and Strasburg are the two best long-term career prospects to appear this year, but with all the hype over Jason and Strasburg and Davis playing in NY, the two top ROY candidates right now would have to be Jaime Garcia and Gabby Sanchez.
I hope Heyward wins, in part because of the Braves winning a pennant, but if I were an honest voter right now, those two would get my votes as 1-2. (PS, Venters value to the team is almost as much or more this year as jason’s)

J-Hey’s injury kept him out of the lineup and out of baseball consciousness for a while there. If he kills it all through the second half, he’ll be right in the thick of it.

For the fellow asking about Scott Proctor, the news isn’t too good. He’s been ineffective with Gwinnett, giving up lots of hits and runs. Check out the website for the Gwinnett Braves and you can see the specifics.

Boatdoc. Must have nodded off there for 10 or 12 hours, gosh darn it. I still like Jason in center field. I know it will never happen with Bobby around. Maybe next year?? And whoever said Chipper is a leader is dead on. I know a little something about that. How many times is he the first one out of the dug out to congratulate a fellow team mate? Who was the first player to bear hug Jason after his first home run? The captain! That’s how you pass the torch like the gentleman he is? I know a little bit about getting old. Tough transition. Going from decorated World War Two bomber pilot to standding at the urinal these days — for half an inning or so — waiting for the gosh darn thing to do its job. I think there was a Presidency in there somewhere. Thanks for listening…and…GO BRAVES!!!

Well. I know quite a lot about sea bass as well. Caught a many a one up at our cabin, up in Maine, out on the coast there. And that new short stop you picked up — he’s a keeper. I’m tellin’ ‘ya. Kid can flat play some kind of ball! He may not be Ozzie; haven’t seen a back flip yet; but he’s pretty darn close. I’ll settle for that beautiful “glove flip” — for one of the better double plays I’ve seen in years!
