Venters got probably a game too much, Cox got the right amount but for the Braves to say both pitches were pitches that got away is just not true, not at least for so called professionals. If Venters appeals, add a game to both Cox and Venters’ suspensions.

Don’t underestimate Ken Macha’s dislike of the Braves and Cox. After all, Macha is technically the replacement for Cox’s leutinent, Ned Yost. The Brewers fired Yost on their way to the playoffs in 2008 which was a low class move. In his 2 years at the helm, Macha has overseen a dramatic backslide down the division table by the Brewers.
We could also throw in that Macha played for the Pirates under Chuck Tanner who tried to take away credit for Cox’s success with the Braves by saying that he paved the way.

i hope that what Escobar is doing will make Wren think a bit before giving away the store again. Escobar will hit 300 for the rest of the year with 10 homers and 40 rbis. By Oct I sure hope you all wont be saying what if Wren had kept him.

The main point is that if they were going to warn and eject on Saturday, they should have warned and followed through with ejections on Sunday. The umpire crew had two sets of rules in the last two games of the series. They should all, along with Bob Watson, be suspended for a month without pay. They all embarrassed themselves and made a mockery out of the whole episode.
Suspending Venters is a farce. I can’t believe how many dumbbells here don’t know the difference between a slider and a fastball. The first pitch to Fielder was a slider, the second was a fastball. Look at the video, not the gametracker! An equal number seem to be ignorant of the reasons why and how a player gets thrown at. It isn’t even debatable what happened in this case. Would the Braves get their already overused rookie lefty up in the pen, warm him to being game-ready, bring him in, and then have him blatantly attack a hitter while Angel Hernandez was behind the plate? How stupid do you think the Braves are? Use some common sense! Angel overreacted, which was predictable, and the warning over a slider escalated beyond his little league ability.
Do not discount the fact that the Braves were only down 3 runs in the 8th inning with 6 outs to get those back against a Brewers’ pen which has given up many games this season. We all know that the Braves lead the world in late-inning drama this season so why in the world would they intentionally put the leadoff man on when they were already down 3? You really think they made a conscious decision to give up on the game so they could hit Fielder for no particular reason with their most valuable pitcher in the bullpen? When Bobby warmed up Venters and brought him in while the team was down 3 he was telling you EXACTLY how bad he wanted to come back and win that game and how possible he thought that was.
Venters has opened other outings with backstop-pitches in warmups and in his first few pitches in the game. He is second on the Braves’ team in HBP (behind Hanson) even though he is just a reliever and has a fraction of the IP of others on the team. A quick check of his splits will remind you that all four of his HBP’s this season were against LHB! He isn’t that good at pitching in to lefties quite yet as a rookie, and nobody seems to remember that the issue that retarded his minor league development was wildness! He is also walking 4.5 guys per 9 IP at the ML level this year, which is high. Some idiots think a good ERA means Venters can put the ball wherever he wants which his definitely not the case. He has a low ERA because his ball moves so much, at times uncontrollably. That is a fact.
Angel is a terrible umpire, which you expect. Nobody knew for sure how bad Bob Watson is until he came in with the suspension.
Only thing worse than what Angel did was what ScottBarry did on Sunday, executing a warning after Heyward was thrown at with three straight fastballs with the third one finally hitting him, and then not throwing Riske out when he drilled Glaus with the same pitch that Venters got tossed for: A tailing fastball inside waist-high. I don’t think Riske actually tried to hit Glaus, to be honest, but just like it was with Venters, they had to toss him. To not do so turned the whole weekend into a showcase for how to umpire little league games. Even a little league umpire should be able to figure out what is going on when Parra, with his team being routed and his pitch count over 100, threw three consecutive fastballs right at Heyward, and so should the little league guy at MLB. Bob Watson is the biggest sap of the whole bunch to turn in the paperwork on a 4 game suspension while ignoring Parra and Riske You cannot have two sets of standards and rules. Insanity!
I really think that MLB is trying to keep Prince from killing somebody on the field. I’m sure Boras is all over MLB to protect his free-agent-to-be. The pictures of Angel snuggling with Prince all the way up the first-base line are good enough that I’m glad the whole thing happened, even if Venters is screwed over. Read Diaz’s comments from the post-game Sat blog…everybody knows Prince is an out of control red-ass (ask Manny Parra) and if he does go to the mound he might end up ending more than one career, especially his own. I’m glad Venters is still alive and that too is worth the ridiculous suspension.
I’m sure they will reduce the suspension on Venters. Too bad Bobby has no way to appeal. The umps and Watson really blew this one.

this is a total bogus call by Bob Watson just not right in my book. Our guys did hit them a time or two, but two of our soldiers got hit in the same inning and nothing was done about it????? How can Bob Watson justify these suspensions??

PDOG@124am……Once again, Escobar had LAID-DOWN on the Braves. He wasn’t going to do anything to help the Braves win, he was a liablity, not an asset.
Up in Canada right now, he’s trying to prove Wren was wrong.
He had already proven in Atlanta, that he didn’t care anymore.
It probably will not be long before someone or something makes him mad in Toronto, and he will lay-down on the Bluejays.
I hope he does great up there, but the Braves will be fine, without his baggage.
Atlanta came out of top of this trade.

Given the girth of Mr. Fielder, it would be very difficult to prove in court that his being hit by a pitch is intentional. This should go to the US Court of Appeals.

This will be appealed and the suspension will be 2 games for Venters.Cox will just sit it out and smoke a cigar. I do think the Braves need to submit a complaint to MLB regarding the decision by the umps NOT to suspend the Brewer’s players. Both sides were warned and nothing came of it.

First of all, there needs to be more plunking in the game, keeps hitters honest – that is one reason hitting surged in the past several years, as well as credit to pharmaceuticals. The worm has obviously turned on the pharma issue, HR are down to normal levels.
Due to Selig’s poor stewardship of the game of baseball, we have players (like Fielder) who basically wear pajamas out on the field, and look nothing like an actual baseball player. Manny is another pajama-wearer. Their image and actions are a red flag that MLB basically has no real commissioner, only a buffoon.
Where have stirrups gone? Why are players wearing slacks to play baseball in? That is laziness. There are no uniform standards in MLB. That trend should have never been allowed to start in the first place.
Even the NFL has uniform standards.
Selig now has so many stooges in the MLB offices, that even when he passes on, they will still circle the waters like a rudderless ship.

Venters suspension for four games is terrible, and Cox’s suspension for this reason is not justified. But for the good of the team, is there any possiblity that Cox’s suspension (for whatever reason) could be extended until the end of October?

Everyone needs to realize that Escobar made his own bed. Frank Wren did not have a horrible first half, Frank Wren did not have a bad attitude that was detrimental to the team during the first half.
I hope Escobar does well, it will hurt the Braves in the long run to see him do well during his career but remember Yunel caused the trade.

The real scoop is that Venters purposely hit Fielder but not for hitting the hr but for eating the chickfila cow on top of the stadium. Fielder said “he was glad to get back to milwaukee where he is allowed to eat the loser of the 7th inning hot dog race”.

Fielder has been hit 14 times this year. Where any of the other pitcher/managers suspened. venters has the fourth best era,etc in mlb as a reliever. so an umpire has to decide for himself the intent of a pitcher when there is a hitbatsman! they have a hard time getting their calls right on issues with fullproof in front of them, but now they have to reach deep into a pitcher’s psyche and pull out information on intent on their own! just a receipe for disaster if you ask me!
Venters should not have received a warning for the first inside pitch, should have gotten the warning on the hitbatsmen, and then perhaps tossed if it happened again!
On Sunday, I thought there was more intent after warning was given and a one of ours was hit, I would think as umpires you would think revenge or at least you had ammunition to think it was intentional as well!

I don’t get all the hatred for Prince Fielder. The suspensions for Cox and Venters are warranted. The claim that Venters wasn’t throwing at Fielder is laughable. The first pitch was behind Fielder and just over his head. The second one was 2-3 feet off the plate and hit him in the middle of the back.
If you can’t do the time, don’t do the crime.

Since the Brewers manager says that the team has been hit 47 times this year, maybe the MLB should look at them. Sounds like they are crowding home plate or putting their bodies into the balls.

You are getting all giddy because he had a good 4-game series? He had a good opening day, too. Followed by 3 and a half months of mostly suck. He has hit 2 homers in Toronto, which does us as much good as the 17 that Alex Gonzalez hit for them before coming here. Yunel is an emotional player, and he is riding high on emotion right now. We all know how he is capable of playing when riding high; also when riding low. But don’t get all starry-eyed over 4 games; baseball is a marathon, not a sprint.

Considering that every conversation we have had I have owned you to the point of you having to change the subject to Prince is fat or Prince is a crybaby, I will continue to use this one. I should have figured you would have made something like this up, considering most of the things you say as facts I disprove.
