BOBBY COX
“Lowe pitched a pretty good ballgame. In that kind of humidity – it was 88 percent humidity, and it wasn’t raining. It was rough out there today.”
“We hit the ball well and played good defense. We looked pretty good. We got the split. After [losing two of first three], it turned out OK.”
On McCann’s grand slam
“That was huge, are you kidding? Mac can do that. It doesn’t matter if they’re left-handed, right-handed, anything. He can hit. And he caught a nice game today, as well.”
On Diaz
“Matty’s really hot. He only had two or three games down there. I thought it would take a lot longer when he got back. I didn’t really think he was ready. But he is. I think he wouldn’t need spring training. I think he could skip all of it and start the major league season without any at-bats.”
On upcoming Padres series
“We go from series to series, and that’s it. Whatever the schedule says we’re playing, that’s what we do. We haven’t seen them since early April.”
On why umpire said he didn’t eject Riske after the warning
“He said he didn’t think he threw at him…. It’s a mess.”
On Gonzalez’s defense
“He’s got the quickest feet and gets rid of the ball so far. He’s really good.”
On Omar’s four-hit game
“Omar had a big day, too, and he’s going to get overlooked. He had a nice day, and he wasn’t feeling real good, too.”
More on Lowe
“He was out of gas. We were hoping he could go six. It was so humid today, you wouldn’t have believed how humid it was. Could hardly breathe.
“We finally got him some dang runs.” (The Braves had scored a total of two runs while Lowe was in his past four starts.)
DEREK LOWE
On his sixth-inning exit
“That was the most disappointing thing, the sixth inning. Sometimes I find myself struggling sometimes when you get a big lead. You kind of lose your edge maybe, get a little lethargic and think, home run here, that’s OK, and next thing you know you’re out of the game. It happens that fast.
“We were fortunate to have some guys rested in the bullpen to pick it up the rest of the way.”
On avoiding home-series loss with today’s win
“We’re, like 20 games over .500 at home and hadn’t been in this situation in a long time. It was a big win. I think guys sensed that coming to the park today, we wanted to even up the series. Mac’s grand slam got us off and running.”
On McCann wearing his batting helmet again for postgame interview today on TV, after getting grief from Braves teammates for wearing it in the All-Star postgame interview:
“I was going to put it on today. It was definitely funny to see at the All-Star game. He got some serious ridiculing about why he wore it. We all know why he wore it; I’m not going to tell you why. But it was fun. He knew he was going to get a little ridiculing when he got back [from All-Star game]. And he did.”
On the San Diego series
“It’s very important. It really is. We haven’t seen them in a long time. When you think about them you think about their pitching. Their pitching is fantastic. Not just their starters, they have the best bullpen ERA. They’re tough to score off of. But we’re very confident in our starting pitching, so it should be a great three games of pitchers’ duels.”
On Jurrjens facing Padres again after career-worst start against them in April
“It’s been so long, and he’s a different pitcher from last time.”
On Rickie Weeks’ two homers off Lowe
“In my opinion, they’re the same – leading off the game you never want to walk somebody. And then I backed myself into a hole, up 8-1 with a 3-2 count, you don’t want to walk him there either. Not to say you have to throw it right down the middle.”
“Clearly you’re happy with the win. We did a lot of great things today. But I wanted to go deeper in the game.”
Heat/humidity have anything to do with it?
“No. Again I just think it’s a game where you have such a big lead that you think, one run here, one run there, it’s not going to be a big deal. And then it turns out to be a big deal.”
On Diaz’ performance since back from DL
“You look at what he’s done. The pain that he was playing through… You look at our team, yeah we got Alex [Gonzalez in a trade], but getting J.J. back was just like trading for a starter. He’s made three [healthy] starts all year; he’s as healthy as anybody [now]. Heyward missed 15 days, Matty missed longer than that. So we end up getting three guys back in a short period of time. I think we’re a good team, and it should be fun the next 2-1/2 months.”
Some observers think you guys might need one more piece
“You could say that about every team. Every team’s always saying we need one more guy, one more guy, here or there. But what do you need? I think we’ve won a lot of games with some of our starters out. Two or three starters a game, it seems like, don’t play. And we find a way to win. And I think that was one of our strengths leaving spring training, the depth of our bench.
“There’s a lot of guys who can step in and play multiple positions, and you saw how that was beneficial in the first half, with Hinske and Omar…”
BRIAN McCANN
“Everybody hit today. It was a great team effort. Everybody worked the count, took what the pitcher gave us, and we were able to put up some runs.”
What were you thinking on the 0-2 pitch down middle
“Better not miss it. Because I knew if missed that one, he could go anywhere. Luckily, I didn’t miss it.”
What does win like this do heading into off day before Padres?
“We’ve got to keep going. That’s what we keep saying, we’ve got to keep playing this kind of baseball the rest of the way out and see what happens.”
On importance of not losing this home series
“When you open up and win the first game of a four-game set, you’ve got to at least take another one. And we did that today.”
On how he’s hitting the past month or more
“I feel good. My swing feels good, my body feels good, and I’m ready for the second half.”
Big week for him
“Yeah, the All-Star thing was great, and today was great again.”
On swinging well against lefties again
“My whole life I’ve been able to hit lefties. I’ve been through some things these last two years where I wasn’t able to stay back [in stance]. Now that I can do that, I’ll be able to work the ball a little more and take what the pitcher gives me a little more.”
On his confidence and swing improving
“About a week and a half before the All-Star break I was starting to feel really good. I made a couple of adjustments, and they’ve been working out for me.”
On Jurrjens facing the Padres again
“When J.J.’s on his game, he’s as good as it gets. The guy who pitched out in San Diego was hurt and he wasn’t quite ready. When he’s at full strength like he is now, he’s as good as it gets.”
Will this be a good test for Braves, knowing how well Padres pitch?
“Absolutely. They have one of the best records in the National League. We’re both in first place. We’ve got to show up and play good.”
ALEX GONZALEZ
No spring training necessary for you and Prado to get in synch?
He smiles and says, “We’re from Venezuela, man.”
On facing San Diego
“It’s a great series coming up Tuesday. We’ve got to keep it up, play hard, keep winning.”
You like the vibe here in the clubhouse?
“I’ve been around a couple of the guys here. I know Prado, Blanco, Infante from Venezuela, man. It’s a great feeling here. Great group of guys. Feels like family.”
MATT DIAZ
“It’s nice to come back and be a part of it. As soon as I went on my rehab stint, my hand felt fine. I didn’t feel bad at all, and then it was just a matter of getting some timing down. Fortunately in that Philly and New York road trip we faced quite a few lefties, so I started to get my timing down there.”
On facing San Diego, is it more important because both in first place?
“No, not at all. You haven’t been listening to what Bobby’s been preaching for [all these] years. It’s win every series no matter who it’s against. So that’s our goal. We didn’t lose this series against Milwaukee, we tied it. We’ve got San Diego coming in, then you’ve got to try to take two out of three.
“If you win every series throughout the course of the year, you’re going to have an unbelievable record.”
On saying Saturday it would be key to score early against Parra
“I did say it was important to get him early. It was good to get those two runs in the second, and then McCann kind of opened it up. Not kinda – McCann did open it up with that grand slam in the third. I think it was seven runs in three innings. That’s what we needed today.
“I’ll put their 1 through 5 [hitters] up against any in the league, so you know they were going to score some runs. But once you score seven by the third inning, it was kind of nice to have a little breathing room against that kind of offense.”
On depth of the Braves’ team
“I think Chipper said it best in spring training when he said, you look at our lineup and you don’t see sexy, but you see solid. And that’s how we feel, we feel we’re solid.
“The depth we have, not only on our big league team but in our minor leagues, is something that we have on other teams. Chipper goes down, we bring in an All-Star. Someone goes down on another team, they’re calling someone up from the minor leagues.”
Do you feel personally like you’re getting back to where you were last season?
“My swing’s feeling real good right now. I’ve got some timing going, got my approach back to where I want it to be. And hopefully we can continue this for another couple of months.”
On team offense today
“It was a breakout today. We finally took advantage when their pitcher made mistakes. The last couple of games their pitcher made very few mistakes, but they made mistakes and we weren’t able to capitalize. Today, every time Parr made a mistake, we punished him. That was good to see.”
On the hit batsmen
“We don’t know if any of those were on purpose. All we control is ours, and we know ours weren’t. But it did look bad. So if the umpire gave the warning right away and kind of squashed it right away, then he did a good job of taking over the game.
“We’re pretty good at protecting our hitters, and they’re probably pretty good at protecting their guys.”

Right now I would rather have Diaz and Heyward more than I would want Hart. Infante in center with Diaz and Heyward on the corners is a great hitting OF.

Good move at SS, but unless there is an injury, no more pieces are needed. This offense and outfield is fine.

“get a little lethargic and think, home run here, that’s OK”
“you think, one run here, one run there, it’s not going to be a big deal”
why would you even think that giving up some runs is ok? You’re suppose to be thinking “how can I get this guy out” not “even if I give up a run here, it’s no big deal”

The Brewers are going to want the moon for Corey Hart. We’d probably trade for Ross (FLA) instead. We don’t really need a big bopper, but we could use a platoon guy to go along with Matt Diaz (or Eric Hinske, depending on your preference).

So far , the change of scenery has been good for Escobar. He is hitting .462 after 3 games, all victories. Meanwhile Gonzalez is hitting .231 .

Hard to argue with the success level this group has already produced. If we go after anybody it has to be of Hart`s caliber or no trade at all. And we can`t get into a Texiera deal again..we don`t need anything or anybody that bad. This team, as currently constituted, can win it all.

Agreed TheWad…I wish they started the playoffs today.
Good for Escobar. Maybe the change of scenery will help him. I still don’t know what his ceiling is but if he gets a better attitude and starts having fun, he could be good. I guess the Braves just felt it was time to make a move with him. Gonzalez will hopefully have a great second half.
How bout that sellout last night!

it is fairly ironic I have to say. That is, Esco hitting bombs, grandslams, .500 obp, and batting .400+ in 1 series, while Gonzalez has 1 double, no rbis, and made some plays today with the glove that helped win it. Pretty spiffy plays as well. kinda funny. Lets hope he gets some chances to deliver for us

Actually esco is just back in 2 hole. Where he’s always hit well. Still the trade might help him grow up. This trade will hurt. Like Tex trade if prospects don’t pan out. Jo Jo will also do great there. We just don’t have room for him. Now we have to make. Room for Minor. Looks like Medlin will be in bullpen also. Chaves goesdown. Could be traded with Blanco or Mclouth. Milkey has to be the best 4th of in baseball. A little more power or avg. Would make him a top starter. Instead of just avg.

Did you see all the former Braves that were all-stars ? Wainwright,Andrus,Soriano,Furcal. We got Drew,Tex for one year each,a minor leaguer, and nothing (free agency) for those 4 all-stars. Yeah, Braves GM’s are REALLY smart…
Since the Bluejays are building for 2013, go get Vernon Wells from them for McLouth,Diaz or Hinske, and a top AA pitching prospect.

I think the trade was good for the Braves. I’ve always thought that Escobar was one of, if not the best defensive shortstops in the league… at least he had the potential to be. His biggest enemy is himself… whether he ever realizes that or not will be the riding factor in his success at the major league level. I’m pulling for him and hope he does well. You can’t look at the trade and base an opinion on 3-4 games… you’ve got to look at the bigger picture. Same with a team’s numbers… look at the big picture and remember that it’s a long season. A lot of things can, and will, happen before this season is over… hopefully the vast majority of the things will be positive for the Braves. I think the schedule is in the Braves favor and it’s gonna be a good season for them and us as Braves fans. In spite of many negative comments about Bobby Cox and others on the coaching staff and front office, I think they’ve done a good job overall and I really hope that this season continues to play out well for Bobby… and Chipper… because after this season, he’s gone.

I agree with a previous blogger. How can Lowe say stuff like “With a big lead you say its okay if I give up a hit and a homer, hard to stay focused.” ??? Mr. Lowe, that’s the difference between you and Roy Halladay. Halladay would be doing his best to pitch a shutout if he was winning 35-0. It’s called giving 100% at all times, Derek Lowe.

Some of the best players ever had bad attitutes in the clubhouse. Does Ty Cobb,Pete Rose,Reggie Jackson, and Rickey Henderson ring bells for anyone ? So what if Escobar doesn’t sit and b.s. on the bench with Chipper and others. He gets paid to play well not be everyone’s buddy.
If you label players clubhouse cancers then you are in the game for the wrong reasons. Give me a guy that hits .320 30 100 that stays to himself over Mr. Nice guy that hits .215 3 21.

I don’t want Corey Hart. I think between Diaz and Heyward with occasional time for Hinske and Infante, the corner outfield spots are fine. A little more offense at CF would be nice but it hasn’t looked like McLouth or Melky are going to give that. Also, thinking about trades……this is the day in 1993 the Braves got Fred McGriff! I don’t see anything that big happening this year though

I really like this team constructed as it is. If we get an offer we can’t refuse that is one thing. But I don’t want to sell the farm to get a rent a player for the rest of the season. Again as one blogger put it, the Texeira trade. Although Andrus is the only one really showing out as far as I know. Again as another blogger put it, we’ve already accomplished the essentials of a trade with JJ, Diaz, and hopefully a fully healthy Heyward. I like the team as constructed, frankly I am more concerned about our bullpen depth. Saito makes me nervous, know he’s got good stuff, but I just don’t have a lot of confidence in him, I feel Moylan is overworked. I think we’ve got the lefties covered, with Venters and Wagner as well as O’Flatery. One more strong right hander may make the difference, I am hoping in a perfect world, Kimbrell can be the one to get us over the top. Wish he was used in a regular bullpen rotation instead of Saito at the moment.

Infante and Hinske are best at producing when spot starting and pinch-hitting…not starting everyday…imo. Thus, trade a decent prospect (Redmond or DeVall) and either Melky or Blanco to the Marlins for Cody Ross to solidify our OF and chances of making a deeper push into October.

ok everybody is talking about derek lowe like he’s crazy or sumthin, but what happened to him is very common. it’s easy to lose focus when you have a great lead. Why do you think so many closers have trouble whenever they come into a game with more than a 4 run lead? it’s a mental thing. for example, if you have the bases loaded, 1 out, a 3-2 count, and a 10 run lead, I’m sure your mental state will be a lot different than if you had a 1 run lead. you will be more willing to sacrifice the walk, etc.

The great pitchers pitch to get every hitter out no matter what the score is.
And I said GM’s, which for you hal means plural and includes both Wren & JS.
Vernon Wells wouldn’t be a renta player. He would be another Fred McGriff and be a real 4th clean-up hitter with real power. Chipper,McCann, and Glaus aren’t true clean-up hitters.

Brandon, the pitcher is supposed to get outs without giving up hits or walks. When it becomes acceptable for him to give up hits and walks then it is time to rethink his competitiveness. The great players and team bury weaker teams. They don’t stop the bleeding. Remember FSU football in the glory days beating Duke and Wake Forest by 60 points every year ? What Lowe said was he doesn’t give 100 % all the time. That’s unacceptable.

I am not for making any more trades. I think the Escobar trade is going to hurt us long term because he is only 27 and will be good for a long time. Gonzales is 33. If we make anymore trades, teams are going to want our young pitching which we should not give up. Finally, everybody plays a role on this team, and the chemistry is great. Sometimes you are better with a good platoon than you are with one guy unless its a star. Having said this, I would move McClouth and KK if you could for minor leaguers to save payroll for next year that we will need to resign Glaus, Hinske, and Infante, all of whom are important to keep as Braves now and in the future.

I think Escobar’s start is evidence he needed to get out from Bobby’s thumb or just needed a change of scenery. Good luck to him.
I also don’t think the trade will hurt the Braveslong term for one reason: Edward Salcedo, the then 18 year old ss from the Dominican that everybody was trying to sign, and the Braves did, another great move by Wren. Scouts compare him to A-Rod. Projections are for him to be to the majors late ‘11 or ‘12, the same time Gonzales will be leaving.

Esco wasn’t a good fit in the clubhouse. If you’re a great player, but bring the team down mentally, then you’re hurting your team. I hope he grows up and this trade may have been the light switch for him. Nothing but good wishes for Esco, but he his the Braves’ past now and we move on without him. Prado has someone else to talk to as well which is a nice perk for our best player.
And for what it’s worth, Yunel was a bit overrated, us Braves fans and media are guilty of doing that with most of our guys. Frenchie, Davies, Schafer, Johnson, Salty, Yates to name a few in recent memory.

I agree that Derek Lowe’s comments aren’t very “soothing” to Braves fans. But then, I think if a pitcher is placed in that position, they can’t let it get them thinking the worst and “Yunel” for the rest of the inning/game. Seriously, I wish Escobar the best, I really enjoyed watching him at SS, a really good defensive player. This Braves’ second half should be great to watch.

I can’t believe that nobody has mentioned Marlon Byrd. Decent hitter and a very solid defensive center fielder. I was disappointed that he made such a good play in the AS game because until then, he was probably the best center fielder that nobody has heard about.
McLouth is good defensive center fielder, but hitting .175 is going to kill the Braves offense. You know you’re in trouble when one of the starting pitchers is doing more from the plate than a position player. Come to think of it, maybe Huddy should be a part-time hitting instructor.

Does anyone think the braves need a starting pitcher? I know 1-5 we have good starters, but with the exception of Hudson, none of those guys is dominating right now. I think to win the WS, you need two guys who can win you games single handed. Now if Tommy can get it turned around, we’ll be fine, but I was hoping last year that he would be one of the elite starters in the game by this time. Medlin has really been the Braves 2nd best pitcher.
Problem is, there is probably no one worth getting available since Cliff Lee has been traded. Just a thought.

I always like Alex Gonzalez from he was playing for the Marlins and that is why I do not consider this a bad trade, especially if Escobar was a problem in the Clubhouse. However do we know that was the case/ I have not heard any comment from any player, Coach or Front office personnel to suggest that, could it be the fall off of his offensive production. I still think he is a talent and he will flourish elsewhere.
His career numbers tells us he is a good Ballplayer, and i am no Psychologist but when Bobby dropped him to 8th in the lineup i knew he could lose focus. This guy was at the top of the NL last year when hitting with runners in scoring position and you start the season with him hitting 7th and 8th instead of 2nd behind Prado. Also what took our great Manager so long to realize that McLouth was not a leadoff hitter?
Prado should be leading off and Escobar hitting 2nd to start the season.

What is up with Jason Heyward? He seems to be pounding the ball into the ground as if he is playing on an artificial turf. He would do well in Toronto with that approach. Heyward proved early in the season that he can hit lefties, as he proved going deep against lefties going opposite field. However recently he seems to be pulling everything and has started swinging at some bad balls out of the zone. Could there be too many advisors in his ears?

i for one have always been for letting players play there way out of slumps as well as putting out a balanced line-up every night, such as power, speed, defense, right, left, right, left in the batting line-up. but at this point in the season it is a for gone conclusion that melky sux, nate is having an awful year and hinske is a pinch hitter. however, diaz is back and healthy, and omar continues to produce when he is in the line-up. so barring a trade, the braves should put this line-up out there the rest of the year: PRADO 2B, HEYWARD RF, JONES 3B, MCCANN C, GLAUSE 1B, DIAZ LF, GONZALEZ SS, INFANTE CF. and as the game goes on sub in mclouth or cabrera for defensive purposes if needed.

I look at the trade of Escobar and Gonzo almost like the trade of Gary Templston and Ozzie Smith Templeton was at the time a up and coming Power arm shortstop with all the tools,he was with St Louis.Mean while the Padres had a player Named Ozzie Smith.Ozzie was At the time above average SS they traded it worked out well for the Cards.

Looks like we will be 5 1/2 and 6 games up (respectively) by the end of the night. You can’t beat having a good night’s rest and gaining on the other two “sure-fire bets”. (All disrespect due to ESPN).

Escobar hit ANOTHER home run today. Couldn’t we have waited till the trade deadline to make such a big decision?

I suspect that Escobar wanted out of Atlanta and deliberately dogged his play to force the Braves hand. you don’t go from barely hitting ball to the warning track all year to hitting the ball 10 rows up out of the ball park two days in a row. In watching his stance he is more open now so that he can pull the ball. This year in Atlanta he was so closed that he could not pull the ball with power. Now we could guess that Tito Gaston changed his stance once he got to Toronto, but the better answer is that the young man just wanted out and played his way out by his play iin the field and at the plate.
