Braves’ comments after Saturday win vs. Mets

BOBBY COX

“Huddy pitched well, and we made some nice plays behind him. Glaus turned a nice one. He pitched good. Got a lot of groundballs.”

On leaving lot of runners on base early

“Yeah, we did, but we made up for it. We came right back and got some.”

“Pelfrey I thought he threw the ball well, too. He got a ton of groundballs. We snuck a lot of them through, and when he had to have a double play, he got it.”

On Infante’s series

“I’m glad he’s having this. prior to the All-Star game. It’s great. Not too many starting right fielders end up playing the infield.”

On Hudson

“He’s had a great first half. I don’t even know how many wins that is for him. I know he’s lost a couple of heart-breakers. He’s really had a terrific first half. Strong – really strong.”

On Heyward’s BP session

“He’s not going to play [in the All-Star game], but I think it felt good, is what Bubba told me during the game. It’ll be nice to get him back.”

On winning these series before break

“They’re all important. The last one we had was important. The one we had before that was important. The next one is going to be against Milwaukee after the break, that’ll be important.”

Going to break in this position

“It’s good to be in first place at the break.”

TIM HUDSON

“It was a big win for us. Going into the break, at the very least we’re going to be four games up on these guys. You couldn’t ask for a better road trip, taking at least two out of three from [both of] these guys.”

“I felt good about my start today. I didn’t feel really great out there, but it was one of those things where I just bobbed and weaved. Guys made some good plays and had some timely double-plays that kept them from having opportunities to score. I wasn’t nearly as good as the outcome, but I’ll take it.”

On being able to turn lead over to this bullpen

“It’s awesome. I mean, it’s awesome. It’s definitely the best bullpen I’ve ever played with, there’s no question about that. We’ve got all the confidence in the world – one-run lead, two-run lead, regardless of how many innings they’ve got to pick up.

“We’ve got some guys down there who are big-time swing-and-miss guys. You can’t ask for anything more out of your ‘pen.”

On the offense

“You’ve just got to keep pressure on the pitcher on the other team. It’s nice to have guys going out there just battling every inning. I know as a starting pitcher, when you have a team that goes up there and just battles every at-bat, doesn’t throw at-bats away too often, it wears down the other pitcher.

“It’s great when you have an [opposing] team going up there and just flailing away at pitches, trying to hit the three-run homer every time they’re up. It’s nice to have guys [on your team] trying to put together good at-bats to get an inning set up, to put yourself in position to score. Over the course of four or five innings, that’s going to, at the very least, wear down the other pitcher, and he’s going to give you something to hit.”

On Omar Infante playing like an All-Star

“Hey, man, he is. He is an All-Star. He’s been very underrated all year. It’s great that he’s getting this kind of recognition. I’m sure there’s a lot of people who may scratch their head just because he’s not an every-day player. But these All-Star games are games that we need to try to win for home-field advantage. You want your best players out there, whether it be left-handed guys in the ‘pen or whatever, situational type players. He’s a valuable player, even though he’s not an every-day player.”

On his double

“I just got lucky, hit it where they wasn’t. Obviously the sac-bunt base hit was kind of embarrassing, because it was such a bad bunt that it turned out to be a base hit. But I’ll take it. I’m not complaining at all.

“And the base hit to right field – I looked at their outfielders and they were playing me like I’d probably play my wife if my wife was hitting. That’s a little embarrassing. I guess my power is not respected yet.”

On Glaus’  double play:

“Double-play line drive. Troy. That would have been, at the very least, second and third with no outs to start that inning off. That was probably the play of the game right there, in my opinion.”

TROY GLAUS

On the double play

“Just reaction to a line drive. Stick your glove out there and hope it goes in.”

How big to win first two in series

“We’ve talked all year about just winning series. We’ve done that now, but we’ve still got work to do tomorrow. Two’s nice, but it’d be great to get three.”

On Hudson throwing seven scoreless without his best stuff

“That’s a testament to him. Even when he doesn’t have his best stuff, it’s still sinking, it’s still running, it’s still doing all the things that it’s always done. He got a couple of key ground balls when he needed them, and ultimately he only gave up four hits.”

On hitting Pelfrey

“You try to attack balls in the strike zone and kind of see what happens. At some level, this game’s not that complicated. You want to attack balls that are over the plate.

“We put some good swings on balls. We had a lot of opportunities, and we didn’t really cash in on very many of them. But the opportunities were out there, and that’s the first step.”

“All you can do is give yourselves opportunities, and then hopefully cash in. Obviously we would have hoped to cash in on more of them, but that’s the way it goes. Today we did enough to win, and Huddy pitched his [butt] off.”

On Wagner’s retirement plans

“Maybe we can talk him out of it. But I doubt it.” (laughs)

BILLY WAGNER

On workload

“It’s a fine line. If you get too much, you wear down. And then if you don’t pitch, you’re rusty. Right now we’ve been in good situations where games are on the line. If we didn’t have a break coming up, I’d probably have tomorrow off. But knowing what we have ahead of us, I’ll be ready to pitch.”

Surprised to go today in non-save situation?

“No, we’ve been doing that all year. Every time we can take a series or gain a game, I’ve got to be ready.”

On Hudson’s performance today without his best stuff

“Tim battled today. He definitely didn’t have his best stuff, but he battled and grinded for seven solid innings. It gave us a good chance to get a lead, and we scored enough to give us a little cushion, so you’ve got to take advantage of that and go out and win that ballgame.”

OMAR INFANTE

“We played very good this whole series.”

“I’m trying the best I can, trying to make contact. I got lucky on one base hit.”

On being in a groove

“I’m very comfortable at the plate. It’s hard. Sometimes you feel comfortable, sometimes you don’t, depending on the pitcher. Some pitchers are more nasty.”

What I was going to say before I got all worked up about being first is that I hate to see the All-Star break coming. It seems like we should be taking two of three from somebody this coming Monday thru Wednesday.

Does anyone out there still think we should “Fire Frank Wren” “Fire Bobby Cox” put Troy Glaus on waivers and call up Freddie Freeman? I don’t think so. They’re on the bandwagon now. Bobby and FW have been doing this stuff for a while and know what they are doing.

Great win today. Huddy pitches a shutout without his best stuff. Things look great for the second half. Glad the break is coming now. A few guys are a little banged up and can use the rest. Refresh the batteries and come out strong at home on Thursday against Milwaukee. Frank Wren should be annointed king of the GM’S for the work he did in assembling the best bench in the majors and he did a pretty damn good job with the bullpen as well. Lets see what he does before the trade deadline. Could be he likes what he see’s and does nothing. 17 games over 500. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. It’s time for a well deserved break…. For all of us.

Bobby Cox should have retired 5 years ago. Winning the World Series this year won’t be enough to change that. A lot of managers or coaches stay in the game too long. Bobby’s one of them. But it is pretty hard to write out a line-up…

Fun little factoid: this is the most games the Braves have been over .500 since the last day of the 2005 season. From ‘06-’09, the furthest they ever got above .500 was when they were 86-70 late last season.

Not sure if anyone’s pointed that out.

Tmac, not only that, we’ve got four tremendous starting pitching prospects in the minor leagues in Randall Delgado, Arodys Vizcaino, Julio Teheran and Mike Minor. My guess is at least one will be traded, but if we hang on to the other three and at least two of them reach their potential (some scouts believe Delgado and Teheran have No. 1 starter ceilings), imagine a rotation in three years with those youngsters to go along with Tommy Hanson, Jair Jurrjens and Kris Medlen, who will all be in their primes.

A lot can happen between now and then, but I don’t think the pitching future has ever looked brighter than it currently does for the Braves. Even when Smoltz, Glavine and Avery were coming up within a couple of years of each other there was never this level of organizational depth.

the braves have been awesome the first half with this team playing well in all facets of the game.

the pitching especially the bull pen has been “lights out! and the starting pitch, one of the top five in baseball period.

we just need the fans to get of their butts and start packing the ball park.

that is the only problem is the fans have not supported this team which is awful!lets go atlanta and lets show the braves players and the organization that we are fully bihind them!

A solid starting rotation. (Other then Derek Lowe and I’m not even going to concede that, is there anyone in this starting 5 you would want to trade away)? A great bullpen. A better then average starting 8. The group we have going out there everyday as a team and I stress the word team is as good as there is in baseball. Just ask Tampa Bay, Detroit, and Minnesota. All teams that will be competing for the postseason come September. I like this team as constructed. I wouldn’t do anything to disrupt the chemistry. Your not going to change who were using in the infield. The starting 4 plus Conrad and Infante is rock solid. The outfield as a unit is finally producing. With a healthy Jason Heyward returning it’s only going to get better.

The Devil …Prado — You got that right. And you can add Hoover to the mix as well. I imagine Minor stays because he’s a needed lefty. One, maybe two of the other right-handers gets traded for a big-time outfielder although if Chipper packs it in, Braves could go after Werth during the off-season. Future is looking mighty good these days. And it’s being done without a healthy Heyward for the last month and with Diaz and Chipper only now coming on strong. Not sure how much more we can expect from Glaus though.

Glaus needs the break as bad as anyone. Give him 3 days of rest. He comes back with new energy. It’s amazing how being in a pennate race can help heal the aches and pains. Troy didn’t even know if he was going to play this year. Now he’s in the hunt for some hardware. He’ll have a solid 2nd half.

Largo

McCann was better in his first year than he is now. With Glaus it’s either feast or famine. Worst outfield in the NL. I’m afraid our good pitching (both starting and relieving) and great bench may have trouble carrying us to the playoffs. We need one good hitting outfielder.

Hey Largo, I’ll give you 2 good hitting outfielders. JHey and the combination of Diaz and Hinske. Plus with both Cabrerra and Blanco both hitting the ball well we have a solid team out there. My God we’re 17 games over 500 with the 3rd best record in baseball. We are not a desperate team that has to make a move.

I don’t understand why people on this blog keep insisting that we need to add a power hitting outfielder to our team. In years past we had power hitters and it seemed like everyone was waiting for the three run homer. We may have won a lot of games with those teams but only one WS. I like the makeup of this team, every night there is a different player who comes up big. It seems like they all feed off each other. With this pitching staff we have right now they are going to keep the games close. This is Bobby’s best managering in years. Why ? Because he’s not waiting for that three run homer. Where is it written in stone that you need to hit HR to win a championship. This team has the best record in the NL at the break, I don’t see any reason, other than injurys, why this team cannot win close to 100 games. GO BRAVES

Tmac

BigD I agree. I’ve said this before, the right combination of 4 outfielders for center and left can do more for you then putting all your faith in one guy. We have some solid options for those positions and there fulfilling they’re rolls very well. One slap hitter with good speed and a good glove. The other three are all RBI guys and have the ability to hit the ball out of the park as well as having power to the gaps.

Make NO TRADES unless someone wants Kawa and his interpreter or McOut(h)! All the other guys (including the mad SS) are too valuable to this team. When someone is not producing, there’s always someone to take his place on the bench. Nice combo of speed and alertness on the base paths stretching hits and scoring from first lots of times. It’s obvious Frank Wren knows more about building a winning team than most of us fans. I am completely surprised the Braves are this good in 2010 despite key injuries and sub par performances by some big cogs (Chipper, Escobar, etc.). It’s also obvious why Bobby Cox is a future Hall of Famer. I am also surprised that the Mets have played this well, and that the Phillies have not (the may be tougher in the 2nd half, however). One thing is certain: The 2010 Braves are for real. When Heyward comes back healthy, watch out! The Braves pitching, both starting and relieving, is the class of the NL (if not the majors).
