BRIAN McCANN
On importance of this series:
“We found out last year that every game is important. I felt like we ran out of time last year. It doesn’t matter if it’s now or the last week of the season – all these games are big games. We came in (here) and did what we wanted to do. We’ve got to keep doing it.”
On the sixth inning vs. Moyer:
“He was painting all night and that one inning, once we got guys on base and once he had to mix up his times to home plate, I think he got out of rhythm and we were able to put up a big inning.”
On adjustments they’d made since being shut out by Moyer
“It just all depends with Jamie. He’s the best at changing speeds and he can fool you for a complete game shut out, one-hitter. He can fool a whole team all night. We were lucky to get that one inning where his control wasn’t where he wanted it. He’s pitching at a high level for a reason. He spots up as good as anybody in the game.”
On Prado and his two-homer night
“I can’t even talk about it, he’s just been….He’s done everything you could possibly ask from a teammate. He plays hard every single night. He’s turned himself into a superstar. He does everything that you want on a baseball field and in the clubhouse.”
MARTIN PRADO
On Moyer:
“We knew Jamie Moyer is one of those pitchers – he spots all his pitches. We started like we’re going to be patient, waiting for a good pitch to hit and I think that was the key. Troy Glaus got a pretty good at bat with men at second and third and Mac got a huge double right there. We took the lead. That was the key of the game.”
On what’s gotten into him with the homers:
“I don’t know. The first ball I hit, I thought, ‘OK I popped it up.’ I hit it in the right spot. I never thought it was going to go out. The second one, I felt like I hit it better but too high, and I just ran hard in case it hit the wall and I would have to make it second or even third, and it went out too. Fortunately, I had two home runs today.”
On the importance of the series:
“We don’t think about who we’re playing. We just come to the field and try to make adjustments and work on something and what we should do to get better and win more games.”
KRIS MEDLEN
On the homer to Ryan Howard:
“Every time I make a mistake to him he crushes it. He does it to anybody. A different park it gets caught short of the warning track, but that’s the way the park plays. We had the huge inning against Jamie Moyer. He’s pitched us well last two or three games. Big to get that inning from him.”
On his night:
“Back-to-back innings where I had leadoff doubles from the get go. (Jimmy) Rollins kind of ambushed me a little bit. He’s known to do that he has 30, 40 something leadoff home runs. I’m lucky that ball didn’t go out.”
On the Braves winning 10 of his 11 starts:
“Thanks for jinxing me. (Oops.) I just try to approach each game the same way. Try to stay aggressive. When you’re aggressive in this kind of park, that’s going to happen, I’m going to give up a couple home runs. I had no idea (of that stat). I know we’ve been playing well when everybody’s been pitching.”
MATT DIAZ
On the series:
“Doc put us behind the 8-ball by throwing a great game the other night, we responded against their other two guys.”
On Moyer’s sixth inning:
“Prado got him. Then he started throwing more strikes and leaving the ball up a little bit. Mac’s hit was obviously huge. You could tell we wanted it bad when Troy scored all the way from first easily. He was moving quick. That was big. Then I connected on one to center. I was like, ‘Man, I hope that goes,’ because I didn’t think I hit it as good as the one last night and the one last night didn’t get out. I was wondering if I was ever going to hit a homer yesterday.”
On adjustments vs. Moyer:
“The sixth fell apart for him and we finally started making him get the ball up, change our approach a little bit. When you see the leadoff hitter go home run to left, everyone’s like, ‘Oh that’s how we’re going to hit him today.’ And that’s not how you can approach Jamie Moyer. You’ve got to look the other way, and if he leaves it in, hopefully pull your hands inside it. And we were able to do that.”
On beating Moyer:
“It’s impressive what he does, what he’s done for as long as he’s done it, so to get a win against him was big. To beat two lefties, I take that personally and take some pride in that.”
BOBBY COX
On Moyer:
“He got a couple pitches up that we hit. He started off the game, he had that sinker and the cutter going. I didn’t know if we were going to hit him or not. But he got a couple pitches elevated and we hit them. But he’s good. he’s got a tremendous sinker to me. I know it’s only 81 mph but the bottom falls out and it’s heavy.”
On Medlen:
“Medlen pitched a strong game. Medlen had all three pitches going curve fastball and change-up and he threw a lot of strikes. This park is going to give up home runs right now. It’s just flying out of here.”
On McDowell changing pitchers in the eighth because of the heat:
“I told Roger to run out and run back one time. The bullpen knew what we were doing so it was no big deal.”

You guys do realize that the Mets moved Santana up in the pitching rotation with their day off tomorrow so he could face the Braves Sunday before the all star break. Mets are either really worried when they start doing that or they are showing that they want to win really bad. They are supposed to get Beltran back sometime either for this weekend’s game or after the break. Adding one more bat to that team may make them slightly better than us. We have to get one bat to equal them or we need to get Esco hitting. Esco hitting would leave us right where we want to be. Even with CF the way it has been.

Great series win with another big one coming up. The three game cushion is nice as chances are that the Braves will get at least 1 win, so the Mets taking 2 out of 3 will still gives the Braves a 2 game lead.
Nevertheless, it’s time to make a statement against the Mets as the Braves are merely 1-4 (and swept by the Mets back in April) against them. Should be another intense series.

tristian, we’ll match by getting Jason Heyward back healthy in the 2nd half. I do think we need another bat in the lineup. Wren said he’s going to wait to see how McLouth and Diaz perform before he tries to trade for anyone, so it’s a wait and see approach.
Also, how do they match Jair Jurrjens in the rotation for the Braves in the 2nd half. Tough series with the Mets, have to win the first game, we always lose the first game of series for some reason, time for a change. I dont think it’s desperate they are pitching Johan, but they know how big this series is.

Quote from ESPN.COM – “Martin Prado is headed to the All-Star Game despite complaints he doesn’t belong. It’s not his fault; all he did was a little bit of everything.” Kinda strange – there’s a picture of Infante accompanying this blurb. Turns out the article is about Infante, not Prado. The idiot sports media can’t tell a Prado from an Infante. Go to MLB.COM – no mention of the best-in-NL Braves. Go to SI.COM – lots of talk about Youk and Swish – none about the best-in-NL Braves. I don’t know what this team has to do to generate interest.

I agree with the post concerning the Yunel.I don’t get why people dislike him so much.He has had his moments, but he is growing and sometime we grow the most when we go through struggles. He is not having the year that most of us hope that he would have hitting the ball, but he is still balling with his glove and seems to be enjoying himself.I hope his stick comes around in the second half and he helps this TEAM get over the hump and win this thing. But if he don’t hit a lick,I hope he continue to grow as a player like Prado.I hope he remain a Brave a long time.[

When will the Braves get the recognition they deserve? Even on “BB Tonight” they totally discarded how surprisingly good this team is and only really talked about good it would be if the Phils could get healthy and get back in the race. Unbelievable!

I think we need to be very cautious about making a trade. If we can steal a complimentary right hand bat without giving away our top prospects (or somebody like Medlen), then obviously go for it; but the best thing this team has going for it right now is chemistry and lack of ego. A guy like Jose Guillen or Bradley’s ridiculous suggestion of Upton could upset that in a heartbeat. Remember, this team is 15 over and in first place without really clicking on all cylinders yet. If Heyward comes back and does 75% of what he did the first two months, and if Esco and Chipper have even one or two hot spells each, this team will continue to put up runs. We basically just picked up a #2 starter with JJ’s return and a solid right hand bat in Matty D. If we can get the right combo in centerfield to at least have a respectable OBP in the second half and keep playing defense, then we’re sufficient there too. I think this team is poised to explode in the second half and I can’t wait!!!!!

T (althoughomahawk, I agree with you and posted same yesterday — if we win the division, Martin Prado should be the NL MVP. The writers can’t vote for Puhols every year. It’ll be just like Pendleton in ‘91 – Prado’s HR and RBI numbers won’t be that high (I think TP only had 19 dingers that year, and at this pace Prado could beat that), but he’ll win a batting title and clearly be the most important guy on his club. Kirk Gibson didn’t have monster numbers in ‘88 for the Dodgers but he won it.
Right now at the half way point, no question Prado is NL MVP. But we got 80 games left, the next 3 of which are HUGE. Somebody brainwash Chipper into thinking he’s back at old Shea Stadium.

you need to lay off of the heavy mind altering stuff. Braves are a very good team right now. However, they cannot hold their own against the Yankees, Rays, or any of the really good American League teams. They might win the NL this year, but, if they want to win the World Series, they MUST add another big bat to the lineup. They cannot win the division, let alone the NL pennant or WS without another major bat.

Vino @842am…….I don’t think that the Braves need to make any trades.
With Heyward and Diaz coming back, that will give the Braves some more power at the plate, and that is all the Braves really need(in my opinion).
I think that Bradley’s suggestion about trading for BJ Upton was just a Jeff Shultz type, idiotic rambling, to get more bloggers. It is hard to believe that some people took it seriously enough to endorse it, and suggest we trade a better player than Upton(as in Matt Diaz), and top minor league prospects to the Rays for somebody that the Braves don’t have any use for(and apparently no one else in MLB).
Let Cox play the hand that he has been dealt.

As most of the baseball analysts, players, managers, GMs, will tell anyone that will listen, good pitching can trump good hitting.

Yunel is a hell of a player. He’s struggling with the bat right now, but there’s no reason not to think he’ll turn it around. The problem with him is that he’s flashy and cocky and sometimes selfish. How many times have you seen him wave off Prado so that he can step on second and then throw to first for a bang-bang play to complete the double play? He usually makes it due to his strong arm, but there’s a chance that it’s going to come back to bite us at a crucial time. I think it was Tuesday night that he scored a run. The ball isn’t coming to home plate, it’s being cut off. Yunel still does a flamboyant little slide across home and struts over to the dug-out. It’s all show-off, look-at-me stuff. You can respect his ability and admire his talent and still not like his cockiness.

Say Something and What, — You are assuming that that Booby won’t stick the .176 hitting McLouth back in the lineup. Remember the Boob had him there most every day for most of the season before his injury — the Boob had him in the lineup almost every day without giving Hinske or Infante a chance at all – throughout the first 1/4 of the season and even through the nine game losing streak.

ummmm.. had to wait til my last toke wore off.
any good OF with power (Upton, Willingham, etc ) aren’t going to come cheap – either prospect wise (Upton) or money wise (Willingham). Upton is a very good player, but he’s like Escobar $10M talent with a 5 cent brain)..
I don’t know how much money Wren has to spend on a player, but I’d be willing to bet that it’s not much, which would leave the alternatives of Upon (and another possible Texiera fiasco with prospects to give up).
I doublt that Liberty Media will spend the money to make the team competitive for a World Series title. If they did, they would have made significantly better upgrades during the off-season.
My point was, if I didn’t make it clear enough, was that, as the team is composed of now, doesn’t have a snowball’s chance of winning the world series, let alone sweeping it in a 4 game series. They are a good team right now, but nowhere near the Rays and Yankees.

I agree, no trades are necessary, I love this team’s chemistry, I think Esco will probably come around at the plate and there’s no one better than him at SS for defense. I love Troy the man tree chugging around the bases on bad knees, he is such a gamer!!! With Heyward back, all our OF’s are hitting except Nate. I love the versatility that gives us. I don’t follow the logic that because several utlility/backup outfielder types are hitting now, that will somehow continue over the next 2.5 months. Hinske has started coming back down to his career averages. I think Diaz coming back and swinging it well is huge though. They can play him and Hinske in left. Cabrera/Blanco (preferably Blanco because of speed) as the fourth outfielder and if you can, you get a centerfielder who hits right handed on the trade market. I think too many folks fall in love with their guys when they win. Bottom line is that you have to position yourself to succeed in October and aquiring an everday bat would do just that. As far as chemistry, it’s a chicken or the egg argument. Most chemistry exists because the team is winning. Another bat helps that, ergo the chemistry will not be affected. If nothing is out there, I can live with what is there, but the notion that the Braves should just sit on their hands because everything is rosey in July doesn’t make sense when you look at the firepower in the division.

I was a slight bit worried last night since it didn’t appear the Braves were ever going to solve Moyer. The big inning was really huge. It gives the guys more confidence that they can fight back successfully if they end up behind in a game. I’m now sooo psyched the Braves are 3 up going into the Mets series. Now that the Braves are facing them one-on-one, it’s their division lead to make bigger….or to lose. I’m thinking it’s time to help cool off the Mets now — don’t you all?

Only bats out there are willigham, hart and bautista. Stats for those three guys…(all right-handed)
Hart: .285, 19 HR, 61 RBI, .909 ops, 42 runs, 63Ks ($4.8 million)
Willingham: .279, 15 HR, 46 RBI, .921 ops, 44 runs, 63Ks ($4.6 million)
Bautista: .238, 22 HR, 54 RBI, .901 ops, 52 runs, 67Ks ($2.4 million)
Hart is the best option. He is hitting .345 against LHP. Thats what they need and i believe that he is under contract for next season. That would give you 2/3 of your outfield next season. And a damn good one at that. Hinske/Hart, Melky, Heyward is an outfield that could go to the world series. Hinske/Infante/Diaz/Blanco/Melky/McLouth/Heyward….sadly is not. Need a bat. The Nats think that they are very close. They are going to want players that can put them in a playoff race next year. The major weekness they have at this juncture is late inning pitching. To get Willingham, we would probably have to give up someone young and with a high up-side like Venters, as well as a starting outfielder (Melky presumably since McLouth will not be able to prove himself before the trading deadline).

Escobar pouts like a baby about everything. That’s his main problem. DId you see the game the other night where several players had to go give him a hug and pat him on the back after he made an error just to try to keep his head in the game. It wouldn’t surprise me to find out his hitting woes are related to him hitting at the bottom of the order instead of second like years past and he’s just been pouting about it all year….That being said I hope he gets it together for the second half of the season and returns to form hitting wise. That would give the Braves a very formidable lineup.

Although McLouths RBI and HR production were not that bad in the two years before this season, he has always hit in the .250s or below in every season except one. But there is no excuse for Booby keeping him in the lineup this year on and on and on and on (even through the 9 game losing streak) with him hitting in the .170s and producing very little — without giving Hinske and Infante playing time to be productive. No telling how many games this cost the Braves.
There is a slight possibilty that after the time off on the DL, he might come back and hit at his career average in the .250s or better, but this is probably not likely.
Problem is, the Boob is probably going to give him playing time regardless and cost the Braves more games.

No one wants a player to be injured.
But McLouth being on the DL has made it impossible for Booby to put him in the lineup.
How many of you think that we would have won as many games during this period of time McLouth was on the DL – if this had not happened and Booby had been free to put him in the lineup.
