BOBBY COX
“Huddy was outstanding. He gave up two real cheap runs in the first inning. The ball was right at Prado, almost, the one that [Hudson] deflected. That cost two runs. Other than that he made one bad pitch. That was it. He was lights-out.
“That’s as good as – I say it every time he pitches – he had as good a stuff today as I’ve seen him have ever, even when he was with Oakland. He was just outstanding.”
“Nolasco always strikes out a lot of our guys. He always has. Occasionally he’ll ring up 12, 13 punchouts.”
Won all series on homestand
“That’s good. We had a chance for a sweep today with Huddy. We’d have liked to have a sweep. But their guy pitched good, too.”
On Brooks Conrad’s defense:
“Conrad made three really good plays. He’s a good player. He can play a lot of positions. He’s been one of our sparkplugs, he and Infante.”
On falling short in rally attempt
“We always feel like we are [going to rally]. But [Marlins'] Nunez has unbelievable stuff, too. He’s hard to hit.
“It is surprising when we don’t [pull off a rally].”
TIM HUDSON
“We can up on the short end today. Couple of pitches cost us the game. The home run to Uggla was just a cutter that pretty much corkscrewed in there.”
On the play off his knee: “I’m not sure if Prado would have had a play on it, or Esco would have had a play on it. Just those two plays. One guy beat us today.”
On his All-Star selection (we didn’t talk to him about it before game because most pitchers don’t like to be interviewed before starts)
“It’s an honor. I’m excited about it. It’s going to be a lot of fun. I’ll have a chance to make some pretty awesome memories with my son. More than anything, I’m really excited for Omar. Charlie Manuel moved up a couple of notches in my book for that.
“It’s awesome that he selected him to the game. Obviously I’m happy for B-Mac and Heyward and Prado as well. It’s going to be fun.”
More fun going with four teammates?
“I tell you, it’s a great group, man. It’s going to be fun. I know it’s Heyward’s first All-Star game, Prado’s and Omar’s. It’s going to be a great experience. I’m excited.
“When I first game here to Atlanta, I didn’t think it’d take me six years to get to the All-Star game. And I’m sure that management didn’t think so, either. But it’s nice to finally get back. It’s nice to be healthy. Last year at this time, I was wondering how I was going to feel on my rehab starts. What a difference a year makes.”
On Uggla, who’s played in a couple of All-Star games himself: “In my book, he should probably be there this year.”
On the play in first inning: “I tried to catch it. It came off a little quicker on me. If I’d have had a split-second more I probably get a glove on it. But it just goes off my knee. It was kind of crazy, because Hinske broke to the bag thinking I was going to make a play on it, and it went right where he [had been] playing. So just a little bit of bad luck there.
“But the game-breaker, to me, was the homer. I was thinking if I make a better pitch there, obviously it’s a 2-2 game late and we have a better chance to win.”
On Nolasco: “He impressed me today. I’m not much of a hitter, but his fastball was really sneaky. I say sneaky – it was 95, 96 [mph]. Everybody was asking me if I thought the shadows were playing a part in me missing those heaters. I said no, it’s the velocity. That’s the reason why I missed ‘em.”
BRIAN McCANN
On Hudson vs. Nolasco
“They both went back and forth and both made pitches, and we just couldn’t get that big hit today.”
On the first-inning play
“He made a good pitch, sinker down in the zone. Uggla’s a good hitter and squared it up. That’s how this game goes.”
On the homestand
“I thought we played great. We didn’t score a lot of run, but our pitching, I talk about it every day, it’s as good as it gets.”
On this week’s road trip
“Big road trip. We need to come out and keep doing what we’re doing.”
On his two-hit day at the plate, including his 10th homer
“First inning, I came up with the bases loaded and no outs and punched out. That’s the play of the day, for me. So I didn’t have that great of a day.”

I had the feeling that our failure to make more of a bases-loaded, no out situation in he first would come back to bite us with Nolasco going. You have to get this guy early and we simply didn’t get er done!

Bottom of 7th, one out and down a run, why does Hudson bat? Don’t we have a bullpen that can pitch two innings? If we don’t score it’s over (and it was). And don’t tell me Hudson is a good hitter…did you see that at bat?

This is the Braves most important road trip of the year this far, period. Yes, I know it;s only July, and we have half a season left, but, if we dont play well on this trip, ans stumble into the break, with, say a 1-5 or 2-4 road trip, and not in first place, psychologically, that will be not good.
I’m hoping for at least a split of the six game trip. If we can do that, it would be acceptable going into the break.

Charlie Lau @1234am…….obviously, you don’t want to accept the facts, but I’ll tell you anyway.
Hudson is a good hitter. In fact, he had as good or better batting average, than over half of the starting lineup yesterday.
Did you notice the ABs of many of the other Braves batters yesterday?
A lot of Ks.
The game also featured an umpire that was calling almost every ball that came within 6 inches of the edge of the left side of the plate, a strike.

This is a little off the subject, but at first I was really excited about Infante making the All-Star team. I am still happy for him, but I wonder what the All-Star game is coming too. He is a part time player and I know he would be starting at alot of other teams, but you don’t put a part timer on the All-Star game when there are other everyday players that are better. Uggla is probably one that should have made it. I mean 16 homeruns for a middle infielder is something. And I am not pushing Uggla, but numbers don’t lie. If we don’t get a Commissioner and get Selig out of there we are going to ruin the summer classic and baseball. If we are going to reward plattoon type players, lets put Dale Murphy in the Hall of Fame. The Utility player position is a joke. Even though I know they are valuable to the team they are not better than other players that are true All-Stars. Just my feelings.

@124am………’lineup is awful without Glaus and Heyward’.
It seems like I remember the Braves winning a bunch of games just last week, when Glaus was in a mini-dry spell at the plate and JHey was sitting in the dugout with a cast on his hand.

Due to work commitments the only day I can get to games is Sundays. I went the last 2 Sundays and they lost both. It seems like on Sundays, especially after winning the first 2 of a series, they decide it is a good time to not play the regulars. Yesterday, a crowd of 45,000 and Chipper sits again and Glaus is given another day. With Heyward already out RBI were at a premium. It seems 1/2 of the crowd wears Chipper jerseys and he sits. I don’t buy the rest idea. When Chipper was playing all the time he was much better. Why does a baseball player need rest anyway. They “work” 3 hours a day and most of that is sitting and standing, really not doing anything. If they are in shape it should not be hard to play every day. Give them days off on the road…but when 45,000 come, many to see Chipper, others to see Glaus drive in some runs…how can you justify giving them both time off. Bobby has had a great career, but it seems like he is thumbing his nose at the fans, especially on Sundays. My recommendation is…AVOID SUNDAYS at the ballpark.

My only fault with Bobby’s managing yesterday, assuming the need to rest Chipper before the next 2 series, was using Chipper, instead of Omar to pinch hit in the 8th. Given they were likely to walk Chipper, they may have pitched to Infante in that situation. That would have left Chipper available to pinch hit in the 9th with the bottom of the order coming up. With Chipper no longer available, I would have used Infante to hit for Diaz and Glaus to hit for Moylan. Glaus gives a better shot at a tieing HR with 2 out and none on.

Pittsburgh Al – I agree. How do you not have Chipper in lineup of July 4th? How does Chipper not demand to be in lineup? One of the biggest crowds of the year. The fans deserve some consideration. Sunday’s games have always been low scoring it seems.

What the All-Star game is coming to (finally) is a game to be played to win! Charlie Manuel said he wanted the best utility man on the lineup, and that is Omar Infante this season.
Perhaps the NL is damn tired of losing home field advantage in the World Series and is finally going to play the game seriously, the way that basic league pride characterized the games back in the 1960’s through the early 80’s.
Back then, there was natural rivalry and league pride that fueled the contest. Today, the free agency has diluted the league pride. Kind of sad that it took a decision by the commissioner to restore the rivalry to the game, but perhaps it finally has.

Back in the late 40’s and 50’s the leagues played to win even if it were just for league pride. The biggest stars — Williams, DiMaggio, Mays, Mantle, Aaron, even catchers like Berra and Campy, played the whole game, even if it went extra innings. The starting pitcher went 3 innings, and, a reliever could go more. Lew Burdett pitched 4 innings in one of the late 50’s games. There are more teams per league now, but if the rule requiring one player from each team were eliminated and each squad were restricted to 25 players, the game itself would be more competetive and more interesting. There will always be some deserving players excluded, but some these may be accommodated by using the also-rans for the home run derby. There should also be a limit on the number of relievers on each team. A starter like Latos is more deserving of a birth on the team than a reliever like Capps. With pitchers only going 1 inning and most hitters only getting 1 AB, there is no offensive continuity leading to a lot of low-scoring, boring games.

That is why a player should play at least 4 and 1/2 innings. Cut the rosters down, but make sure each team is represented. If we are going to play to win play the best the entire game. Let starting pitchers go at least two or three innings.

Good work on the quotes DOB!
The Braves should do well tonight. Halladay’s ERA is up to 2.43 which is the highest I have ever seen it. We just beat Josh Johnson who has the lowest ERA so there’s no reason the Braves can’t get it done tonight. I’d prefer to have J-Hey and Glaus in there, but Diaz and Infante will help fill the gap.

Gonna be tough tonight against Halladay. I would love to bury the Phillies’ hopes with a big series. Yesterday’s AAA lineup was not enough to win. I trust Bobby’s decisions though. We will be at full-strength soon and will hopefully keep winning series. Keep it rollin Bravos.

Looking at Nolasko ERA the last two games, what was it about 6.00. We seem to falter everytime we play someone that is going thru a rough patch. The guy pitched a great game. Hudson was more than good enough to win. Uggla’s “hit” had it not been touched by Hudson would have been an out. Glaus needed the rest (banged up) Chipper ????? It seems like anytime a kid coming up from triple A with no major league wins will usually pitch the game of his career against the Braves…..Win some lose some… still a fun team to watch.

Vernon, like many other BlueJays is having a career year (3 months). Vernon is also overpaid. I believe he’s making over 15M this year. We are already overpaying for Lowe. Unless the blueJays will take Lowe off our hands, say no to Vernon Wells.

The discussion about playing the All-Star game more like a GAME is valid, especially since the winning league gets Home Field Advantage in the World Series and the American League has capitalized on this. Jim, you give an interesting historical perspective, but the “play the whole game” mentality often extended past the ’40s and ’50s. In the first Atlanta All-Star Game (1972) Joe Morgan played the entire game at 2nd, and had the game-winning hit in the TENTH inning. (Interesting that Morgan went 1 for 4 and won the MVP for his single – admittedly a walk-off single, while Hank went 1 for 3 and had twice as many RBI with his home run.)
