Braves quotes after Saturday’s win

BOBBY COX

On Hanson:

“Really good ballgame for Tommy. I think he had 21 out of 29 first-pitch strikes today, and that’s huge for him. I think that’s the key to pitching to begin with. His breaking stuff was outstanding, and he was around the plate, although he hit two guys. He had his overpowering stuff today.”

“The sixth inning, he really bore down and got out of it with the strikeouts. And Moylan came in with two outs, with runners on, and got a tough strikeout against the guy who led the league in hitting last year.” [Hanley Ramirez]

“And Saito and Billy are amazing.”

On the big hits in the four-run inning:

“Infante, and Blanco keeps helping us win games.”

Anything in particular for Tommy was big difference? “Strike one.”

GREGOR BLANCO

On getting big hit in the four-run inning

“Felt great. We’re doing pretty good. As a team, we’re doing everything we can to support each other, and it was my time in that situation. I did the right thing to put the team ahead.”

On Omar Infante

“Wow. I’m his biggest fan. Omar is my hero. He’s unbelievable. For him and Martin, that’s why I’m playing like that. Those guys, Martin especially last year, he was a [backup] infielder and he was doing all the little things every time he played. I’m trying to do that. I know what it takes and what I have to do now, and I’m doing it.”

TOMMY HANSON

“It felt great. I felt good with all my pitches, and we got the win.

“It’s a good way to bounce back after those last two I had. Everything felt real good.”

Did you doubt yourself at all after those last two?

“I had a talk with quite a few of the older guys, and even Kris [Medlen] and Roger [McDowell]. I think I got away from trusting my stuff a little bit and was going out there trying to make a perfect pitch, when I needed to just stay aggressive and do what I did today.”

“I think that’s the biggest thing I can take away from those two bad outings, is to just trust my stuff and always stay aggressive.”

Did you feel stronger as game went on?

“I think maybe a little bit of the adrenaline started going. I knew I was throwing the ball well, and I was having fun. So I just kept trying to do what I was doing. I think so, as the game went on I started striking a couple of more  guys out and things started feeling a lot better.”

On Braves’ four-run third inning:

“Any time you get that, it helps a lot. It was definitely a relief to see that.”

Bobby saying throwing first-pitch strikes was the key

“I think so. Getting ahead of guys, I felt like I could stay with my fastball or go to one of my breaking balls, or even a couple of times some change-ups. It just gave me a lot more options today, getting ahead of those guys.”

Able to come up with strikeouts when you had to

“I just tried to keep making my pitches. It was bases loaded, one out, and you kind of want to go into damage control right there and just worry about one out at a time. It just so worked out that I got the two strikeouts right there. It was an awesome feeling coming off the mound after getting those two punchouts.”

More on getting stronger as got deeper in game

“Everything felt good for the most part today, and then once I got out there it felt like it just kept getting better. My command kept getting better and everything kept coming out of my hand a lot better.

“I definitely felt a lot better and a lot stronger and more confident in the later innings.”

Are your hit batters a flukey thing? (Hanson leads NL with 10)

“I don’t know. The one against Ross, it just slipped out of my hand. I was trying to go fastball inside. I felt it slip out of my hand. And then the curveball I was just trying to overthrow it. It’s not like I’m out there trying to hit guys or anything like that. It just so happened that a couple of times it would slip out of my hand. Just kind of one of those deals.”

On leaving field to standing ovation

“That was good, especially after those last two starts. It’s good to get back on this side and throw the ball well. Definitely a good feeling.”

On mechanical adjustment he made since last start

“Roger pulled me in the video room the other day and just showed me last year how much I was on top of the ball, compared to my last couple of starts. I think it was just – as a reminder to myself I would always think, before my leg goes home, to get my [pitching] hand out [of glove and behind body]. That always lets me get [the hand] back and get on top, so I can go down. I think those last couple of starts, I was dragging a little bit and not quite getting all the way up [with the hand above head]. I was down just a little bit and everything was going this way [flat].”

That helped your slider?

“It helped my slider tremendously. Just getting my arm time to get up, back here, so I can work down.”

BRIAN McCANN

“He was getting ahead, kept the ball down, kept them off balance. When you fall behind hitters you become predictable when you throw 95 miles an hour. I think his command was way better today that it was the last couple of starts. That’s what we needed from him today.”

On the big inning, key hits:

“Man, Blanco, I can’t say enough about what he’s done. He’s brought a spark to our lineup. He’s playing great, making all the plays. He’s a tough at-bat. Infante got another big knock today, and that was the game. We scored four and our pitching shut ‘em down.”

“Today was a big outing for [Hanson]. Coming out today and doing what he did was big. He got big strikeouts when he needed to. That’s the Tommy we needed today.”

On Moylan’s strikeout of Hanley Ramirez:

“Pounded the ball in the zone against one of the best hitters in the game. Such a big spot in the game, right there.”

“I think today was a summary of our season so far: We had a big inning and we had great pitching. That’s what we’ve been doing all season long. Today was no different.”

It seems like no matter what the lineup combinations are, they are out there scrapping and someone else gets hot. I never expected Blanco…

Here’s what some of you had to say about Blanco on May 25: He has played a huge part in 3-4 wins since. A huge part.

Gregor Blanco is not close to being a major league player.

Pete, take a break. Blanco’s stats are major leage, of course. He’s not a Pujols, just a fairly typical major leaguer.

no williamshakespeare thats not it at all. the sarcasm comes from chipper sitting every third day with something new wrong with him, heyward getting the day off with a strain or jammed whatever, jurrjens hamstring, kawakami blisters and back, mccanns eyes, diaz’s splinter, lets see did i leave anything out or did tha cover it. oh mclouth is a bust and escobar is a tool!

Why Blanco? We need a bat off the bench not a pinch runner. I agree with Austin why not Jones or Thornton we have extra outfielders in Infante and Prado if needed.

Do we really need another outfielder? I mean we’ve got Hinske, Heyward, Cabrera, McLouth and Infante in a pinch. I’d like to see them bring up another pitcher.

I feel confident every day that the Braves are going to have a good chance to win. I’d put our 5 starters against ANY other teams starters for sure… Go Braves!!!!!

As I posted on the other blog:

A big reason for that clubhouse camaraderie and everyone feeling they are on the same level is the attitude of Chipper Jones. A lot of players with the status and accomplishments of Chipper would be more egocentric and not allow others to be on his level. Poke fun at his injuries and missed time if you will, but Chipper does so many little things that do not make the statistics but make this team into a champion.

Go Braves!

Blanco deserves to stay in the line-up once McLouth gets healthy. After Heyward comes back, Diaz and the Melk Man can be our backup outfielders. Think about it: that’d be quite a force coming off the bench!

Well the real hero the last two nights has been Peter Moylan. He has gone from being absolutely horrible to coming in and getting guys out. Way to go! “The Aussie Matador”!

As much as I am wary of Blanco after witnessing his subpar work in 2008 and 2009, I am delighted that he has grown and matured and is taking advantage of this unlikely opportunity in McLouth’s absence.

As someone else mentioned, hope Bobby rides his hot hand until he cools and then we can re-evaluate for the remainder of the season. I doubt Blanco is the answer, but sometimes getting nice little bursts from your entire 25 man and some of the 40 man guys can get it done. Not sexy, but it is obviously working.

Josh Willingham would be a nice fit, but a year and a half of Josh for one of our primo young pitchers would probably be a gross overpayment. Powerful RH corner outfielders that are still relatively young are going to be a premium at the deadline.

I do not think we will see McLouth back until August or September at the earliest. Get him well and on a 30 day (I believe that is the max) minor league rehab and bring him back when the rosters expand in September.

Escobar has played and hit better since Chipper talked to him in the dugout the other day. No reason he cannot get out of his fog and be the hitter he has been the last several seasons. He could carry the team for periods in the second half. He was a “difference maker” when he came up and perhaps he will remember that soon and tear it up.

Except for a couple of series, we play top teams in the second half plus starting Monday we’ll be on the road for awhile. Wins will be harder to come by. We need all our players to be at their best. A big bopper would also help . . .big time.

“Infante, and Blanco keeps helping us win games.” It has a certain musical quality to it, no? The fact that even the backup-utility-DL-fill-in players are threats should be making the rest of baseball a bit nervous. That said, dose it seem like team’s defense has been a bit soppy lately?

2011 Atlanta Braves Roster!!! This will be the team following this years World Series team in 2011..

C- Brian McCann
1B- Freddie Freeman
2B- Martin Prado
3B- Chipper Jones (I dont think he will retire, just my guess)
SS- Yunel Escobar (although if his struggles continue dont be surprised if we make a move here)
LF- Corey Hart ( I hope we get him this season- he’s signed through 2011, we’d have to give up alot)
CF- Gregor Blanco
RF- Jason Heyward

Bench-
IF/OF- Omar Infante
LF,1B- Eric Hinske
C- David Ross
OF- Nate McLouth
2B, 3B- Brooks Conrad

Rotation-
1. Tim Hudson
2. Tommy Hanson
3. Jair Jurrgens
4. Kris Medlen
5. Derek Lowe

Bullpen-
1. Johnny Venters
2. Peter Moylan
3. Kenshin Kawakami
4. Eric O’Flaherty
5. Takashi Saito
6. Mike Dunn
7. Craig Kimbrel (Closer)

This team would be amazing, its so deep I had to leave guys like Matt Diaz and Melky Cabrera off the 25 man roster. I really think Gregor is here to stay, he is becoming an excellent baseball player with great speed and keeps improving his hitting everytime I see him, I said this about Prado two years ago, he reminds me alot of him. I also think Omar Infante is a GREAT utility man. I think Nate has too much talent to sink off into oblivion, however if that concussion lingers on, and we dont see the same old Nate again, I think Diaz will take the spot. I think Chipper will continue to play, although he wont ever be a 30 or even 20 homer guy again, expect 15-17 homers and 80=85 RBI and if he can hit .285-.290, he will be fine. I wish we could have had Glaus for one or two more years, but he will get big FA after this season with the Braves. I think Freeman will have a decent rookie year. I really like our team, especially the starting pitching which will be THE BEST rotation in all of baseball, you heard it here. 1-5 we are stacked!! Plus with Medlen, we have another great young pitcher, that will be right up there with Hanson and Jurrjens. Lowe and Hudson make this a feared rotation. Our bullpen will be even stronger, even without Wagner. Kimbrel will step in and do amazing and we have KK for long starts, and Venters has another year under his belt….Awesome team…

GO BRAVES!!!!!!

Monger. Good looking lineup, but Hinske is a FA after this season, and I believe Saito is also a FA after this season, and they definitely won’t keep both KK and Lowe after this season. One of them will be moved. If it’s KK it will be a salary dump and we will get little to nothing in return and probably have to pay some of his salary even then. We could get something for lowe maybe, but I’m doubting if too many teams are interested for 15 mil a season. If they move one of those in the offseason I could see Mike Minor starting in our bullpen next year for the medlen-style long relief/spot starter break into the majors.

We will see his Blanco plays through the rest of the season, but I really doubt he would be used as starting outfielder next year. But who knows. Go Braves!

I think Tommy may not be able to take the heat, literally. The California native was born and grew up in a very mild climate. Coming here he has really struggled pitching in day games so far in his career. He pitched really well yesterday, but you could tell he was having trouble with his grip. He slipped from about 5-6 pitches, 2 of which hit a batter.

Slumpbuster, you and I agree about Blanco. However, that doesn’t mean Cox and Wrenn do. Here’s predicting Blanco returns to the minors when McLouse is ready. Don’t forget that Kelly J continued to play until late in the year last year even though Prado was outhitting him by about 100 points. And, don’t forget Bobby’s rule that a starter never loses his job by injury. The only exception was Schafer losing his job, but they didn’t know he was injured. Hope you are right, but don’t think Bobby thinks like that.
