I was gonna go with another played-out, not-even-funny old joke here. But, I think dude deserves a break. I’ve had to move before. It can make you sound a little off…
Good move by the D-Backs…I can still remember watching Gibby’s home run in the World Series, limping around the bases, Vin Scully making the call Still my favorite baseball memory
Wayne, I’ve been good. Runnin’ my behind off with work and my son’s baseball. He plays on two teams. One in his league and a traveling team, though we don’t travel too far. Just around the state and we had two tournaments in Minnesota.
As much as I love it, I’m ready for it to end so I can gear up for work in the fall. His league tournament starts on the 6th and we’ll play up to 10 games in 11 days, and in between those tournament games have two final tournaments on the weekends. He’s getting tired, (as are mom and dad). Add to that, it’s been 97+ degrees for the past 3 days with no let up in sight.
But all is good. He decided not to play football this fall. That makes me smile. We all needed the break. LOL
Did you see John Goodman’s end coming. Kinda didnt realize till he got onto the ferry and asked for a cigarette? Gut wrenching but too real from what I’ve read.I’m hooked too and cant wait for season 2.
cabravesfan: that’s what we were talking about, the Eels song used in the final scene of Rescue Me season premiere, in the church.
I thought it was another solid episode, but they’ll get better as soon as they get all the other characters involved in next episode or two, I’m sure. That one was mostly Tommy, for obvious reasons — he was left dying as the last season ended.
You know what sucks: cab and VJ are so nice, and such seemingly good people here, that I’ve got absolutely nothing to hit these people with. I mean, talk about an area ripe for humor. Dude MOVED HIS LIFE. And, I got nothin’. Why couldn’t you be like Jeff321? I could be all over that…
Watched a lot of Jair Jurrjens’ outing on Wednesday, and he looked great. Not OK, not good — he was exceptional. Why he won, from Mr. Nanda: Jurrjens had a 70 percent first-pitch strike percentage against the Nationals. The MLB average is 58 percent. He threw 61 fastballs for a strong 68.9 percent strike percentage. He had a 53.8 percent chase percentage on pitches inside Olney ESPN Insider
BAS – sorry – reaching across her to type did not give me a good opportunity to re-read my somewhat over-long sentence (and I do dabble in Language Arts tutoring, I’m afraid to say)…
cab, even I’ve figgered that you’re female. That makes you a dudette. Plus, it’s starting to sound like you treat the guy like something approaching a Roman slave. He, most certainly, is the dude deserving of a break. Hell, I think you were trying to promote him in a three-way cage-match earlier today.
We’ve had two trades of veterans in the last week and in both cases, the team acquiring the veteran player — the Mariners with Russell Branyan and the Rangers with Bengie Molina — took on no salary.
The Indians are paying Branyan’s salary for the rest of the year and the Giants are paying Molina’s salary, which is just another sign of how little money is available.
“A lot of the trades made are going to look like this,” an AL general manager mused on Wednesday evening. “There’s going to be a lot of salary relief.”
The Rangers needed a veteran catcher, and the way they made it work was by including reliever Chris Ray, who is making $975,000, and getting salary relief from the Giants of help offset Molina’s $4.5 million salary. This way, the Rangers’ payroll stays in place. In return, Texas gave up a mid-tier prospect.
The Rangers are hoping that Molina can help them, writes Evan Grant. The Rangers still need a nudge from a judge, writes Randy Galloway.
With Molina gone, it’s Posey time for the Giants, writes John Shea Olney Insider
Thanx and tip of the hat to ‘thin’ for breaking down MINOR’s first AAA start numbers. Pretty impressive. Definitely trying to dec other GM’s into going for this bum, no? Call MIKE up, and let him impress, so we can go get that great OF bat on the cheap in a trade. LOL, LMAO.
GWINNETT
MINOR (1.17 ERA) in AAA thus far. Splits show 102 pitches, 64 strikes, 38 balls. BTW, CRAIG KIMBREL allows an unearned run in the ninth, but gets his 10th save as his ERA in AAA dips below 1.00 (0.99).
FREEMAN the man again tonight. He’s definitely launched on a trajectory toward downtown ATLANTA. 2-4 tonight (.283 BA), another double (21), 2 RBI (43).
MATT YOUNG (.301) 0-3 but a BB, and run scored in the lead-off slot. Steady OLD MAN RIVER (.285) 1-3, RBI, run scored. The FLAILING CUBAN (.312) 1-4. DIORY HERNANDEZ (.340) 1-4. JOE THURSTON (.243) 1-4. JORDAN SCHAFER (.214) O’fer. JOSH ANDERSON (.155) 2-4, double, run scored. CLINT SAMMONS (.172) 1-4, run scored.
MISSISSIPPI:
Double-header in BIRMINGHAM this evening. BRAVES win early 2-1 and drop the late game 9-8.
TIM GUSTAFSON wins early going 6.2 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 SO, 0.84 ERA (3 AA starts, two in April) and raises his AA record to 2-0. Distinct improvement over his results in GWINNETT, where his promo and 12 starts resulted in a 5.87 ERA. LEE HYDE gets the final out on a SO, and garners his seventh save in the process.
RICHARD SULLIVAN starts the night-cap and loses, dropping his record to 1-8. He lasts 1.2 IP, 4 H, 6 ER, 4 BB, 1 SO. ERA 6.72 and is NOT destined for ATLANTA anytime soon. JAYE CHAPMAN, JEFF LYMAN (9.00 ERA) both hit hard in middle relief. BENINO PRUNEDA pitches the seventh, and closes it out with a shut-out inning. CHAPMAN’s promo from MYRTLE has not gone swimmingly. 4.64 ERA in 16 appearances, all in relief. The SOUTHERN LEAGUE is currently hitting .314 against him. LYMAN has just been sent down from GWINNETT, and this was his first SOUTHERN LEAGUE relief stint. Not a good start.
Hitting in the first game was limited to 6 H. A double by 1B MAURO GOMEZ (.260) was the only extra-baser. He later scores. RF WILLIE CABRERA makes up for missing the previous game’s hit-fest by going 3-3 (.322) tonight with a run scored. C ORLANDO MERCADO (.299) is 1-1 with 2 BB in the early game. SS LUIS ‘THE LIBERATOR’ BOLIVAR (.276) continues hitting AA pitching well after being sent down from GWINNETT with a 1-3 night.
In the night-cap, lots of new faces appear in the line-up and do well pounding out 10 timely hits (6-10 RISP), but to no avail as the pitching crashes and burns.
SCATTERINGS elsewhere:
RANDALL DELGADO takes a loss to KINSTON and the BIRDS fall 6-4. BRAVES are four hit and go 0-12 RISP. MYCAL JONES (.364) has a 1-4 night with a BB.
GREENSBORO stomps ROME tonight 9-2. BRAVES shoot themselves in the foot with FOUR untimely errors and CALEB BREWER is handed his first loss (2-1). 1B SPANJER-FURSTENBURG has a good night at the plate with a 2-4 evening and a run scored, but his costly error in the third gives that run back.
4th rounder DAVID FILAK takes a hard-luck loss at the hands of PRINCETON, W. VA. this evening. In his second appearance he goes 5.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 SO, 1.13 ERA. No extra-base hits and 2-12 RISP not good. C JACE WHITMER (.250) has the only multi-hit game going 3-4 with 2 RBI and a run scored.
GCL-BRAVES beat up on the YANKEES (always a good thing) 6-2 this evening. SS MATT LIPKA (.226, sandwich first round) 2-4 with a run scored out of the lead-off slot.
27th rounder WILLIE KEMPF makes a solid impression by pitching 5.0 innings of shutout middle relief.
DSL-BRAVES best their closest competition, the RANGERS, 2-1 today. EMMANUEL DANIEL (.152) has a 2-3 afternoon with a double. Only multi-hit player other than DH BRUNO TOVAR (2-3, 1 R, .400 BA) I like this name. Let’s see if his play measures up to the monniker.
First, if VJ didn’t cook, we would starve (I don’t cook) and if he didn’t do the dishes, we would have a serious mold problem (I hate cleaning) and he seems to like to cook so I have no complaints…but he’s very good to me and I certainly appreciate it
Coach, I hope you’re right. But I wouldn’t bet on it.
What do you think is a more logical move? Trading JJJ or trading Minor?
It’s all a moot point if Wren can move Lowe after this season. I don’t think it will be as difficult as it was (apparently) last off-season. With only two years left on his deal, somebody will bite.
In fact, I think it is also more likely that the Braves would “eat” some of his money this off-season with only two years left, rather than three.
If you think about it, it would be MUCH more sound thinkin to move Lowe while eating some money, allowing them to not only make room for Minor, but keep JJJ in the fold until his is too expensive.
But like I said. If Lowe can’t be moved, I would expect JJJ to be shopped, but the return will be pretty good. A team with a bunch of bats (or bats on the way) that needs pitching could do an “even” swap for a bat that has perceived equal value.
Not saying the Dodgers are interested. But a JJJ for Kemp type of trade is what I’m talking about. A guy that could anchor our lineup (alond side Heyward and Prado) for the next 2-3 years.
Perfect trades (for both sides) are made when two teams trade from strength to fill a need. Pitching is our strength and we need bats.
Imperfect trades are made when teams have money issues and trade stars for prospects. While I’m still behind the Vazquez trade (because I think it will pay long-term dividends), it was NOT a perfect trade for the 2010 Atlanta Braves. It weakened the rotation (though Hudson has done better than expected – and likely better than Vazquez would have), while it didn’t really help in the short term. Though we’d be in trouble without Melky – how weird is that to say?
So don’t mistake my saying JJJ might be moved, for saying he SHOULD be moved. And I don’t think it would be a mistake if Wren could get somebody like Kemp as a return on JJ. That would be a move that would IMPROVE the short-term success of the team. Our pitching is good enough. The offense, while seemingly good enough, is FAR from a powerhouse.
“That one was mostly Tommy, for obvious reasons — he was left dying as the last season ended.”DOB

Sorry. Never did get around to watching last season of Rescue me after my DVR crashed and haven’t yet bought (or rented) last season on DVD to catch up. Though I’m already DVRing this season so when I do catch up I can start watching.
Ya know, y’all gave Don a whole lotta crap for his Jurrjens shoulder stuff. And, I realize there was no factual stuff for him to base his rants on. But, I’m a bit of a worrier. And, I freakin’ love JJ, more than any of our boys, I think. That demeanor, at that age. And, that stuff. And, what really endeared me to the guy: his FB at 90-92 until a guy gets on, or until he faces a Zimmerman, or until he falls behind 2-0… And then, suddenly, he’s got 94-95, painting corners better than that dude painted that ceiling of that religious deal (I’s is cultured).
I guess what I’m sayin’: dude had some minor shoulder stuff in Detroit. He had some minor shoulder stuff this spring. And, the kicker, people don’t come back from major shoulder stuff. So, I know it’s been minor, but I’ll be worryin’ ’til he’s 38, and tryin’ to win a fourteenth championship in Atlanta.

The torment within you must be terrific. W&M vs. VCU. Which tutelage were you exhibiting on that one VJ?
I’m worrying about Hanson. He’s got a disjointed delivery (Noleeeee confirmed this, along with a one of the coaches at our school) that makes me wonder if he can sustain the level of “stuff” he’s used to delivering in his best games. I know that the pros in the Braves org know a hell of a lot more than me, but it’s worrisome all the same.
richbrave, good point at 10:36 pm about the braves drafting so many infielders. I thought that was mostly due to Chipper’s age, but I guess it could also be due to Escobar’s issues.
For the record, zerox BAS. I was catching a bit of that too, but when the rumors started with that “loss in velocity” crap, I just wigged out, you know?
I too worry about JJ’s shoulder. I didn’t read Don’s posts about it cause…well cause Don wrote it…my guess is that he went overboard as usual, but I think a wee bit o’ chronic worry on that subject is an ok approach
shortstops and centerfielders are usually the most athletic guys on most high school and college teams. they get moved around a lot as they progress. They likely drafted a lot cause the team is very weak in position players
Bay Area Steve, Don’t forget that Maddux and Glavine both dealt with minor shoulder issues throughout their careers. It appears that JJ has good enough stuff to work through any problems that may or may not be present.
richbrave – I don’t attribute much of my storehouse of knowledge to VCU (no offense to them, just the results of a Masters in Education not being worth much more than the extra pay it entitled me to)…
Tell me how the heck we’re two games up. Besides Prado, who’s bringin’ the lumber the last two weeks? And, Lowe scares ya. Hanson looks like he’s tellin guys what’s comin’. Huddy walks as many as he Ks. Medlen’s got two pitches. JJ’s been hurt, and stat guys have always said he might not be that good… Moylan looks like he should go back to sellin’ drugs every other outing. How in the heck are we two games up?
richbrave, not much, just enjoying not having to work this summer, thus the late night posting (I work for a school system just south of Atlanta). However, it really sucks not having a game on tonight. Not much on the tube.

DITTO. Looked at that in the 60’s myself, and decided I couldn’t afford the tuition for the extra bills it would generate.
We score runs. We hit at the top and bottom of the order. We pitch well–starters, middle relief and closers. We don’t make costly errors in the field (though there have been some boners that haven’t been too costly). Bobby is managing well. We have gamers who will do what it takes to win.
Granted, the usual suspects have been absent at the plate–Chipper, McCann, Esco. But Glaus has provided the power and timeliness the team has required.
I know its hard to quantify, but the team does what it takes to win. Consistently, so far.
I like our chances of sustaining the winning ways. We’ve got deep pitching and good chemistry. The schedule seems to favor us as well. We’ll be head to head with the Phils for the final series of the season.
I will be Driving from Atlanta to Arkansas Sat Morning cooling out to my dope R&B,Rap,Rock Jams. Then shooting fireworks/shots, and hanging out in the Boom Boom Room Saturday night getting Crunk…
To bad I gotta be Back in the “A” (Atlanta) Monday afternoon for work on Tuesday…
And, what really worries me: how grateful I’ve been for Melk and Gregor. I mean, we’re talkin’ Melky Freakin’ Cabrera, and a guy, who (at least the 2008 version) looked like he could be outplayed by six guys from RobDawg’s slow-pitch softball team. These two cats’re darn near carrying us right now. Where would we be? I mean, two more weeks, and I’m gonna be a Melky fan. I don’t know that I can live with that.

BAS, thanks man.
LOL

DOWN ON THE FARM:
BRICENO (2-2) and NIN (3) get the win and save.

Balance, my friend.
