I don’t think a small trade is actually going to improve this trade. We have all of the small pieces in place. We need more a difference maker type of trade…if we decide to make a trade. Otherwise, I’m just not sure your really going to improve this team much over what we already have.
I don’t believe McCann is below league average at throwing out baserunners.(Just a guess) And what he gives us offensively is being the best hitting catcher or thereabouts in the league.
July 1st, 201010:44 am
Pudge put on a clinic because he is one of the best defensive catchers ever. He will be in the Hall of Fame five years after he retires. Expecting McCann to be anything like him defensively is wishful thinking.
You know McCann wants to be the best but it’s tougher to come out of the crouch when your tall. Pudge is like Johny Bench built closer to the ground and quick. At 38 he is the energizer bunny when it comes to production.

JJ4NLCY I can’t count the times when a bullpen pitcher like Saito or EOF have struck a guy out in a tight situation and point to McCann for calling a great pitch. He KNOWS his pitchers.
Heck yeah! That’s one reason why he’s staying a catcher.
Some people give him credit for calling a good game…others yell at him for calling whatever pitch this guy hit a home run with…even if the pitcher totally didn’t throw it where it was s’posed to go.
thinbreakness Your defense of his defense is admirable.
Well, thanks. I’m just doin’ my job.
July 1st, 201010:48 am
monty I don’t believe McCann is below league average at throwing out baserunners.
I don’t think so, either…not this year. He might be right at it…but I’m not entirely sure.
Travis You know McCann wants to be the best
but it’s tougher to come out of the crouch when your tall.
That’s a good point.
July 1st, 201010:49 am
You know Mauer had a Scholarship to play Quaterback and was a 3 sport star in HS as well as a no.1 pick. He’s a tremendous athlete and the best catcher since Johnny Bench.
Why are we evaluating McCann again?
How about McLouth?
jeffery d If I may look way, way ahead….if we make the playoffs, do you think Bobby would start Lowe first again?
no, i think huddy would get the first start. and i personally hope that hanson would get the second.
And Pudge has been catching a heck of a lot longer than Mac, too. No doubt he’s a great catcher, but he’s been doing it for a lotta years.
McFann, you know I take McCann any day over most catchers in MLB.
July 1st, 201010:50 am
Mauer is taller than McCann by 2″.
I never questioned the athleticism of Joe Mauer.
July 1st, 201010:53 am
JJ4NLCY Why are we evaluating McCann again?
I don’t know…
thinkbreakness Mauer is taller than McCann by 2″.
My bad. But, although McCann is not fat, Mauer is slightly thinner.
Most catchers, eh?
July 1st, 201010:54 am
It’s like saying who would you rather have at 1st Base, Gonzalez or Pujols.
July 1st, 201010:55 am
Thanks DAP….I posted that question about 12 hours ago and nobody answered. Made me feel naked
July 1st, 201010:56 am
McCann is the best catcher in the NL and Mauer is the best catcher in the Major Leagues. Redundent, I know.
The only gripe I have about McCann and it’s not a big gripe but IMHO he needs to make sure he has securely received the ball before he tries to swipe tag a runner trying to score on a throw from the OF. But we’re talking milliseconds here, and usually those are the bang-bang plays.Sometimes in his anxiousness he pulls the trigger a little to soon. But I wouldn’t trade him for the world.
July 1st, 201010:59 am
jeffery d .I posted that question about 12 hours ago and nobody answered. Made me feel naked
haha!! i always respond to the late night posts the next morning. i like to go back and see what happened overnight, usually starting about when the game ends. put some pants on.
July 1st, 201011:01 am
thinbreakness It’s like saying who would you rather have at 1st Base, Gonzalez or Pujols.
And yes, Mauer is totally a gr…a great…catcher. But lemme tell ya something, if he EVER breaks the Record For Most Doubles In A Single Season By A Catcher, he’s gonna be my enemy for life…or at least until McCann breaks it after him.
monty But we’re talking milliseconds here, and usually those are the bang-bang plays.Sometimes in his anxiousness he pulls the trigger a little to soon.
Uh-huh. That cann be irritating. But yeah, it happens so fast, and he just seems to get a little anxious…
But I wouldn’t trade him for the world.
Do I really have to post my response, here?
July 1st, 201011:04 am
I hate to be a jack/ass, but the only untradeables are Heyward and most of the pitchers.
July 1st, 201011:06 am
Well, everyone’s entitled to their opinion.
I can’t see Wren trading McCann, though.
Only said that because I don’t really pay any attention to the others. McCann is the MANN for me, too.
I do like Pudge, but that’s just ’cause he’s Pudge. He seems to be a really likeable dude.
July 1st, 201011:08 am
It’s always been a business and Wren is a cold-blooded businessman with great skill evaluating talent.
July 1st, 201011:11 am
Given the value of McCann’s current contract, he’s definately a keeper. Aren’t we lucky that Frenchy thought so much more of his ability than did Brian.
July 1st, 201011:13 am
On Mitchell: “Considering he was on here questioning whether JJ was ready to come back”
Lot of folks on here were questioning if JJ was ready considering his rehab starts were less than spectacular. Probably many things you could question about Mitchell’s comments, just don’t think that was one of them.
I think the future faces of the Braves are McCann and Heyward.
July 1st, 201011:15 am
Really great to see JJJ return the way he did last night. Hopefully the time shut down allowed his shoulder some much needed rest and that issue won’t crop back up again any time soon.
Tough series coming up against the Marlins with the Braves facing their top three pitchers. Glad the series is at Turner Field where the Braves have played some really consistent ball.
July 1st, 201011:16 am
Yeah, I was just messin’ with ya.
And I kinda like Pudge, too. Great defense, really good bat…and he’s still going strong. There actually aren’t a whole lot of catchers that I really don’t like, I mean, with Mauer, it’s slightly just a put-on. And I’m jealous of all his doubles this year…
I think Russell Martin is the only one that I know well enough to honestly just not like. He bugs me.
Yes, but really…I just can’t see him shipping McCann off. Haha, and I’ll tell ya something, he’s gonna have to go into better hiding than Clint Hurdle if he did trade him.
July 1st, 201011:17 am
I think pudge is a cheater
thinbreakness Given the value of McCann’s current contract, he’s definately a keeper. Aren’t we lucky that Frenchy thought so much more of his ability than did Brian.
Totally. No offense, Jeff, but…
See, BMac’s humble (unlike myself ). Being humble will take you far, even though it might not always look that way.
July 1st, 201011:23 am
They seem really high on the 19 year old at Rome (Bethancourt). Know one has any idea what the team looks like in 3-4 years. JJ’s probably pitching in NY. Ridiculous to get that far ahead as a fan, but you know Wren considers the future health of the organization on a daily basis.
July 1st, 201011:25 am
pitching matchups for the Phillies series, not that we’re getting ahead of ourselves, but they’re intriguing;
Monday: Lowe vs. Halladay
Tuesday: Jurrjens vs. Hamels
Wednesday: Medlen vs. Moyer
July 1st, 201011:30 am
I agree, their 3 best after facing the Marlins 3 best – time to seperate the men from the boys and I hope we end up being the men.
July 1st, 201011:31 am
Oh my lord…that guy is my age…
I agree, no one knows what’s gonna happen in the next few years. I just keep telling myself BMac’s gonna be a Brave for life. I could totally see that happening unless the teams decides to trade/not resign him. I think he’d go all Chipper on them and take less money to stay here.
July 1st, 201011:32 am
July 1st, 2010
I may just have to have some fried fish for lunch today in anticipation of this series.
I am having a fish fry tonight in honor of the BIG ones the Braves are gonna catch and fry this weekend!! Anyone wanna join me?
Halladay, Hamels, and Moyer?
Oh…heaven help us. I like Sunday’s pitcher, though! (Tomorrow’s? ICK!!)
July 1st, 201011:33 am
Does anyone find it interesting that no team has made any inquiries about Freddi G?
July 1st, 201011:41 am
McFann, are you attending college yet or making plans? You have a lot of friends on the blog who wish you the best.
July 1st, 201011:42 am
Did you catch the song “fresh blood” in the season opener of Rescue Me.
July 1st, 201011:44 am
No reason to compare Mac to Mauer. I love Mac, but Mauer is clearly the better player. Nothing wrong with being the second best catcher in MLB.
Still bumming about Vizcaino, really hope the kid doesn’t have to end up having surgery. Although it’s far better to have elbow problems then shoulder issues at his age. And maybe this injury keeps the guy in our system past this year? Just looking at the bright side.
July 1st, 201011:47 am
Thank you! Um…I’m not really sure what I’m going to do just yet. This fall I’m gonna take some more classes (at home…we’re homeschooled). To be honest, I’m not entirely ready for college yet. I’m prob’ly gonna take some kind of art class as well.
But actually, I’m sorta ready to start back up with school this fall. I don’t know, just kinda want to get to it. I just hope I still feel this way when the time actually comes.
I say, at 19, have the TJ surgery now. At that tender age, he’ll probably heal quicker and end up throwing harder. We don’t need him for aother 2-3 years anyway. Not to sound like he’s just a commodity, but it is a business. Maybe that’s what Stipe meant.
July 1st, 201011:48 am
njbraves Nothing wrong with being the second best catcher in MLB.
No…but why do people have to keep reminding us, sheesh.
July 1st, 201011:50 am
I’m trying to do a month-by-month assessment of BMac’s defense, but I seem to be short 2 SBs and 1 PB. Thought I was keeping such good tabs on that this year. Aaarrg…
July 1st, 201011:51 am
thinbreakness – you comment that the only untradeables are Heyward and the pitchers. If you are talking about now then I think that you must also add Prado, Chipper, McCann and Glaus, losing one of these players would seriously disrupt the equilibrium and spirit in the team.
Looking to the longer term then nobody is untradeable if the right deal is offered, which is one of the reasons that the Braves refuse to give no trade clauses in any of their contracts (other than inherited ones such as Javy V had).
July 1st, 201011:52 am
And, can someone explain that stuff with RG, and her identity, and Emily from Rome, and thinking of her differently? I’m lost (again). BAS
Well, you see…Soph told someone that Marteeen was dating a girl named Emily from Rome.
July 1st, 201011:53 am
Monday: Lowe vs. Halladay
Ew. I don’t like this one!
If Bobby would’ve sent Hanson to the bullpen, he’d be about as close to an alphabetical rotation as you can get
By no means am I suggesting that Hanson should be in the bullpen. I just thought that was neat
July 1st, 201011:54 am
so DOB, what do you think of the new Twilight movie? :- )
Lowe vs. Halladay
I’m sure this day will be real jovial on the blog
That’s exactly what I meant. I think the 2010 Braves are adding not subtracting. Wren signed 4 guys this Winter that are solely responsible for the team’s success so far, but 2011 is a new season.
July 1st, 201011:55 am
Nu uh. nolie said Marteeeen’s dating a girl named Emily from Rome and then he thought you were Emily since you’re Roman Gal. So, I just wished you and Marteen a happy life together.
July 1st, 201011:56 am
Funny how Sopheeee and jeffrey d showed up at the exact same time.
July 1st, 201011:57 am
Maybe we’re the same person
July 1st, 201011:58 am
I’m not entirely ready for college yet. McFann
Aww, sure you are! You’ll have no problem finding a niche.
July 1st, 2010
Monday: Lowe vs. Halladay
Me neither. Halladay hasn’t exactly looked stellar lately. It does make him seem a little less scary. I mean, he has lost 7 games, right? I think he’s lost something like 4 out of his last 6 starts. Good news for us!
July 1st, 201011:59 am
McFann, with your attitude you will do fine whatever life throws at you.
I knew it…
Yeah, jeffrey’s my Marteeen disliking alter-ego.
July 1st, 201012:01 pm
jeffrey doesn’t like Marteeen?
Oh, jeffrey! I think it was yesterday that you brought up how Lowe comes to bat with that apple bottom jeans song. I’m guessing he picked that song because in the song they’re like get low, low, low, low, low, low (I don’t know how many low’s but there’s a lot of them).
July 1st, 201012:03 pm
Haha, thanks…it’s not so much meeting people that worries me–it’s the reading.
Aw, thanks! I guess I just don’t have enough confidence in my…whatever you call it…reading comprehension. Sure, I cann usually understand what I’m reading, but will I remember it 5 whole minutes later?
jeffrey d Maybe we’re the same person
Sopheeee jeffrey’s my Marteeen disliking alter-ego.
That’s what it is!
July 1st, 201012:04 pm
CB, he’ll say that he does but I know deep down he resents Marteen for sending his beloved Kelly packing.
McFann – a good friend of mine was homeschooled, and she had very protective parents (wasn’t allowed to watch The Lion King). She was nervous about going to college too, but once she started going, she loved it. Found a great group of friends and a nice guy….now I hardly see her
July 1st, 201012:06 pm
Yeah, Jeffrey doesn’t like Martin?
July 1st, 201012:07 pm
I read many of you discussing McCann and his catching ability. He calls a good game and is a good receiver, but his throwing ability is sub par. The strange thing is that it is all a mechanical problem. All too often McCann comes out of his crouch too early, this causes his throws to sail, his front shoulder to fly open, and his velocity decreases. This is why his throws are often high and to the right field side of the bag. I was a catcher in college (small division II school) and its like football in that “the low man wins”. A catcher has to stay in his crouch and use his legs, this is where the power comes from and puts you in a better throwing position. David Ross on the other hand has perfect mechanics and I think it would benefit McCann to watch Ross throw.
July 1st, 201012:08 pm
I know deep down he resents Marteen for sending his beloved Kelly packing.
“You know there’s a G in there”
“I don’t see no G, we’re going with bologna!”
You should come up to Rome for school. It’s the bestest.
July 1st, 201012:11 pm
Wasn’t allowed to watch “The Lion King”?? Dang…that was the first movie my Brother and I saw in the theaters!
She was nervous about going to college too, but once she started going, she loved it.
I’m sure when my time comes, I’ll wind up liking it…but if I started this fall I might go into panic mode. My other problem will be dealing with missing so much of…[gulp]…the Braves!
Found a great group of friends and a nice guy….now I hardly see her
She ditched you? How rude.
My bologna has a first name, it’s O-S-C-A-R. My bologna has a second name it’s M-A-Y-E-R.
July 1st, 201012:12 pm
Yeah, and maybe you could meet this Emily from Rome person.
July 1st, 201012:14 pm
Did somebody actually sat het Jose Guillen? Yeah, just what we need, a big mouth, big contract and not nearly as good as he obviously thinks he is.
That will NEVER happen!
Matt Kemp is a different story. But I think something like that would be worked out in the offseason because it’s a deal that would acquire time and thought. Plus they’d be selling low with him at this point.
Look for a rental here pretty soon.
(wasn’t allowed to watch The Lion King).
WHAT?! Ok, that’s taking it too far…
His carefree days with us are history. In short, our pal is doomed!
July 1st, 201012:15 pm
Really? (That’s not an “I don’t believe you “really”, BTW.)
jeffrey d “You know there’s a G in there”…“I don’t see no G, we’re going with bologna!”
I love that part:
“Hey, I like bologna, jerkhead!…Your act is bologna!”
July 1st, 201012:17 pm
My other problem will be dealing with missing so much of…[gulp]…the Braves!
I rarely ever have to miss a game. If you have work that needs to get done, you can do it with the game on in the background…assuming you can concentrate on other things while the game is on.
I read at the beginning of the season that Ross has been helping McCann with his throwing mechanics. That might be a big part of why McCann’s done so much better this year than in years past.
July 1st, 201012:19 pm
I really do think you would like it. If you ever want to come up for a visit, just let me know and I’ll give you a tour!
July 1st, 201012:20 pm
Roman Gal assuming you can concentrate on other things while the game is on.
That will be easier to do when Ross (or whoever the backup will be at that point) is catching.
I could prob’ly do some stuff with the game in the background…I’d just have to cut out Blogging.
If you ever want to come up for a visit, just let me know and I’ll give you a tour!
July 1st, 201012:21 pm
I don’t like the Hawks offering max money to Joe Johnson. He’s not worth max money, imo.
mcfann, i think ive told you this before, but my wife was homeschooled. she went to college and did great…3.9 GPA as an undergrad, and as of today, she is finished with her master’s degree. 4.0 GPA in hers masters program. smart girl. i mean, she married me, afterall :- )
Ease™ in Buckhead
July 1st, 201012:22 pm
She ditched you? How rude.
Not really…pretty sure he meant that he only sees her at night
July 1st, 201012:23 pm
McFann – she started at Perimeter, which is a real small school (although I think it’s UGA’s Gwinnett campus now) and not very intimidating.
And in my 4 years of college, I never had a class at night that would make me miss a Braves game.
….I did, however, have a lady friend who was a big nerd and went to all these late night tutorials on the part of campus with no streetlights across from the parking lot of sketchy vans, so I’d have to leave games sometimes to walk her back.
July 1st, 201012:24 pm
The Hawks will be a horrible team without Joe. It’s a necessary evil
July 1st, 201012:25 pm
tenbravesfan David Ross on the other hand has perfect mechanics and I think it would benefit McCann to watch Ross throw.
i think he has, and it has.
July 1st, 201012:26 pm
I know but max money? That sucks for the Hawks.
July 1st, 201012:28 pm
College classes interfering with Braves games? Dude, just skip the class!
July 1st, 201012:29 pm
Dude, just skip the class!
I second that. Solves all your problems.
I’m not entirely ready for college yet
You mean that you are not ready for all the hardcore partying, playing baseball, girls boys, staying up late, graduating eight years later, then getting married, finding a real job, etc…Wait, let me reflect on that a minute…Strange, that sounds like my life, but let me edit for McFann.
July 1st, 201012:31 pm
Oopps McFanned that post.

Freedie Freeman is gonna be a good one…280/346/472….at the age of 20 in AAA…8 hr, 20 2b’s
He’s come on strong lately. He scorched the ball in June: .318/.411/.511/.922 with 11 XBH including 3 HR. Overall though he looks like he struggles against Lefties…
graduating eight years later
Dude, just skip the class!
Class? They had classes? Dang, knew I was missing something!
July 1st, 201012:34 pm
I was told there were classes, but that may have just been one of those urban ledgends you hear about college…
July 1st, 201012:37 pm
I keep thinking that Minor is goiung to be dealt for either a STUD Power Bat OR LEE since he was promoted to AAA.
July 1st, 201012:41 pm
cab – Seriously!…the professor handed out a piece of paper (I think it was called a syl..a..bus…) with exam dates and what to study, said nothing about actual classes…just pointed me to the baseball field and said practice…or was that the coach? Hell if I know anymore…
July 1st, 201012:47 pm
I love how “McFanned” has become a verb on this blog. McFann, kiddo, you are now immortalized for the history books
That’s great about your wife! Very smart lady!
My Brother made all A’s and B’s in his first semester or whatever you call it…first year (which was this past school year). Haha, but unlike me, he even reads when he doesn’t have to!
Oh yeah, I’d definitely have to go to a small school, too!
I’d have to do the same…might miss the occasional DGANG, but that wouldn’t be the end of the world…
I’d have to leave games sometimes to walk her back.
Ease Oopps McFanned that post.
Haha! That’s what you get.
