Yeah, me too. Time to see if that shoulder is “TIRED.” That talk about a drop in velocity earlier in April really made me nervous. A lot more than the hamstring which is serious enough for a pitcher.

I’ll become optimistic regarding SCHAFER again when I [richbrave]post him up consistantly for having multi-hit nights.
Yes, that, and the return of some power. He hit a dinger this week, but he could have just run into that one. He’s always generated his power with good hands, and it will be worrisome until he shows his wrist is once again strong enough to do that.

Mike Dunn’s record looks sick. The good type of sick of course. He might be a very valuable trade piece this summer or a great bullpen piece for next year if he is still around. Great trade even if you take Melky out of the equation.

Scoots, I think the Braves would be happy if Schafer never hits a HR in his career if he could just be a good hitter with an ability to reach base consistently and use that speed in CF to help out this pitching staff.
Does that make any sense or have Nate and Melky just really lowered my expectations?

I doubt JJ goes 6 today. Even with the Nationals and their hitting problems, JJ has a habit of letting men get on base and making his innings a little high stress. So first start back I’ll be happy if he goes 5 giving up 1 or 2 runs. What I see happening is this: he cruises through 4 and then lets a couple on in the 5th, tiring a little in a close game and Bobby will pull him after 4.2 IP. No W for JJ even if KK can hold it for him.

Scoots, I know you were just goofing on Melky, but it’s actually scary to think what our outfield production would be without him in the last 28 days. According to baseball-reference’s site here are what Melky has done and what the rest of our outfielders have done in that time:
Melky:
26 hits, 1 HR, 12 RBI
McLouth, Heyward, Hinske, Blanco combined:
45 hits, 2 HR, 17 RBI.
Yikes to say the least.

Glen, making the usual assumptions, the kid would be able to get on base and play excellent defense when he gets up, and that would make him a “nice” player, and certainly give him some value. But his thump as a CF would be the asset that moves him beyond “nice”, I think. He actually has the sock that too many people here think Escobar should have, LOL.
Without the power, I don’t know if he qualifies as a player you would wait around on, just for his peripheral offensive skills and defense.

•Derek Lowe is on pace to issue 18 intentional walks, which would be the most since Roger McDowell’s 20 in 1991.
Just saw this little tidbit on ESPN. I’m not sure what to think about that, except that he must be in jams a lot, though I guess anyone with half an ear could figure that out…

I agree with Schafer and HR. Like scoots said. He’s going to run into them because of his wrists/hands and his bat speed. But I’d be none too worried if Schafer ended up being a guy like Brett Butler who slapped the ball all over the place, used his legs and played above average defense for a few years until a better option came along.
Expectations were so high on him, being the prospect he was and making the team semi-unexpectedly last year out of spring training.
Time to possibly put the “super-star” tag away when referring to him, and just simply hope he can be a decent ballplayer on a winning team if surrounded by guys that can help the team win.
Not every top prospect pans out to be a superstar, but many top prospects have had decent careers and helped teams win championships by playing good ball for a few years.

I am concerned about our bullpen right now. We don’t have 1 RH reliever we can count on right now. Saito is still injured. Kawakami is well Kawakami; and Chavez is not allowed around any close game. Kimbrel should be on this team right now. Moylan could use the rest.

I think the Braves still very much hope that Schafer is in the plans. We have a pretty roomy outfield to cover in our balpark and the dude has some serious speed. Would be fantastic if he could hit 2nd behind Prado and just provide some offensive value there. But it would be more than OK if he just hit 8th and covered some serious territory defensively.

Amen to that. His arm isn’t what MIKE REMLINGER’s used to be that’s for sure. IRON MIKE was directly responsible for at least one division pennant in that 14 year string.

I like Melky. He may not be the best CF ever, and runs the bases like he’s on acid, but he’s a pretty good hitter with a strong, accurate, outfield arm. He’s also not afraid to actually THROW the damn ball. Twixt he an Nate, I’d go with Melky every time.

I still think that the outfield will be OK with Melky, Hinske/Diaz, Heyward. Any thing else will just be a bonus. Don’t give away the farm for a right hand rental. Schafer is left handed and we need some right side offense.

Ease , I know you will agree with me here why does everyone keep bringing up unrealistic trade possibilities and not the obvious ones? The Reds are going to win the Central. So why don’t we just go get Albert Pujols put him in LF and hope he doesn’t have to many balls hit his way. You know since all MLB GM’s are trying to figure out how to make the Braves better. It’s really the perfect option!

On Schafer:
This could be like the tommy john thing where a pitcher regains his strength in the 2nd year. Still way to early to call. When his power and confidence returns(if it does) the batting average and slugging will come fast and furious, whether it’s late this year or sometime next season,and we’ll know he’s back. If he were a pitcher we wouldn’t even be having this conversation.

Nice to hear that Esco may be maturing. I think it should also be mentioned that he did not let it affect him at the plate, and he went out there and got a key RBI hit late in the game that ultimately knocked Strasburg out of there. If he can have a huge second half, this team is gonna roll.

Count me as a Negative Nellie on JJ tonight. Hope I’m wrong but don’t see how he could truly feel confident with his work in rehab games.The Adrenaline Factor may help him, but he was a nit picker before his injury, can’t really see him challenging hitters tonight. Will probably try to just feel his way around. Could see one inning with 2-3 walks and then a blast. It could get ugly if the Nats are patient.

I like the Nelson Cruz idea. I like BJ Upton, obvious Justin more. There are several options out there, with several weeks to make a move. Wren can get whoever he wants, he has the pieces, it’s a matter of who the organization projects the highest etc. etc. BUT, they definitely need some kind of outfield bat, even when Heyward comes back, and even if he were 100%, which he won’t be the rest of the year. The team is getting by with essentially 4 4th outfielders at the moment, which just won’t cut it over the long run.

I’m sure the Braves are still high on the kid. I’ll be pleased if/when he does turn it around. But I have no qualms about making moves which could potentially “block” him. I hope the team doesn’t either. There isn’t much of a guarantee when it comes to his return. His hype from previous seasons was so high because he was projected to be real good, and he was real young. He was to come up at 21-22. And he was to be a solid fielding strong hitting guy. Not AJ with 50 HR potential. But strong nevertheless. Now though, he’ll be 25 if/when he gets back. He could still have a good career, but … his ceiling is lower. And it’s lower assuming he can regain all his prior form which isn’t a given.
I’m mainly hoping that the Braves hope for him doesn’t inhibit trades. In the mean time I’ll continue to be less than impressed with a .200 hitting minor leaguer who looks futile at the plate.

If the mariners are going to rebuild, their top prospect that is one of the best hitting prospect in all of the minors is not going to be part of any deal.
As for Nelson Cruz, for what reason would the Rangers ever entertain moving that guy right now?
As for Justin Upton, unless heyward is part of the offer forget get.

I am not concerned with the average of Schafer, but his high strikeout rate does. He needs to make much better contact.
