And nobody wants that. So, please ask Heyward. Thanks.
DOB- Will the Ken Burns’ series be on PBS and if so, when? By the way, saw an interesting show last night on Fox Sports South called the ” Golden Years of Baseball” and last night that had a feature on the “Three Lost Teams of Baseball”–the Philadephia A’s, the St. Louis Browns and Boston Braves. All 3 teams from cities that used to have 2 major leauge teams. They all moved to new cities right around the same time ‘52-’54. Good old film clips, too
Can we please have a little positive thinking on this blog this afternoon? So, we got swept on the road on a 3-game road trip. We’re still in a winning season at this point, and I really think the boys were somewhat demoralized over the last few days for some reason. Hopefully whatever it was has been “swept” out by the Sox and we’ll get back on the winning track.
Burns’ Civil War documentary remains holy crap good and riveting stuff. Didn’t see his music one and have seen a lot of the baseball one. Like an army of steam rollers … oh, wait, that’s Terence Mann.
Didn’t realize that was Frank Whaley as young Archie Graham. His second-best role, right behind being told “Say ‘what’ again. I dare ya.”
Adam, that sucks that your wife called you that for blogging. I am a girl who’s been married for 13 years. I sit here and blog while my hubby is watching a movie a lot of nights. I support his love of cars – drag racing and restoration. He somewhat supports my love of Braves baseball. He doesn’t mind me blogging while I sit here with him, and he bought me a jersey and ticket package for Christmas. Now, he doesn’t go so far as to go with me to the games, but he doesn’t mind me going.
bravesgrlforlifeeeee, I agree, we need to be positive. We are still in 1st place. We WILL be in the playoffs, and win the WS in BC’s and maybe CJ’s last year!!!
DOB, was this interview live at the ballpark or was this via web chat or something? How did he see your tattoo? Where is your Cash tat?
The absolute best part of Burns’ Civil War series was the music as well. There is a haunting fiddle tune called “Ashoken Farewell” that runs throughout that series and every time I hear it I get choked up. Just dug this up and it’s pretty neat background on Jay Ungar, the composer, and how he wrote it. Can’t wait to see Burns’ new piece. Love that it starts with “The Slide” and Barry’s weak ass arm. That was when he was about 190 lbs and his hat size was probably only a 7 not an steroid-induced 8.5.
Say what you want to about Chip Caray, but he’s not nearly as annoying as the guys for the ChiSox… Chicago on their way to number 10 in a row thanks to an ‘opening day-esk’ performance from Big Zzzzzzzzz
Crime DogKemp’s OPS this year is less than McCann’s. McCann, according to popular blog opinion, “can’t hit.” Makes sense.
Of course it does. (ITS)
bravesgrl4lifeDon’t get me wrong, I get bummed by losses, but still ♥ my Braves!
Same here. I used to get really bummed/violent to doors after serious losses and/or when BMac went throw a bad stretch. Made it my “New Year’s Resolution” to tone that down a bit…so far it’s worked pretty well…the doors don’t get it quite like they used to.
DSL still lead the league by a half a game at 12-7, but lose big last night to the DSL-ANGELS 11-5. DH RON LUNA (.393) has a 2-5 evening and scores two runs. The two position players we’ve been watching, SS SALCEDO (.270) and 1B ALCANTARA (.278), are coming along. Both have 1-4 nights at the plate. ARIS has an RBI and a walk also.
Six BRAVES hurlers were cuffed arounf pretty good with only reliefers ELVIN GARCIA (2.0) and ELIAS VALDEZ (1.1) turning in unearned run stints.
GCL BRAVES are winners last night 5-2 and have the early league lead with 3 wins and a single loss. The team pounds out 10 hits including two doubles and a triple. 2-11 with RISP. C COREY BROWNSTEN has a 3-4 night with that triple, drives in an RBI, and scores a run himself.
Four pitchers combine for 9.0 IP, 8 H, but limit the opposition to 2 ER, while striking out 11 and walking only three.
DANVILLE finishes their three game set in PRINCETON, WEST (by GOD) VIRGINIA by winning 7-3, and sweeping the series. Still a bit too early to go into individual performances. Some trends will develop in a few more games.
ROME is crushed by LEXINGTON, N.C. last night as three BRAVES hurlers are dismembered by the home team. Starter ROBINSON LOPEZ lasts only one inning while surrendering five earned with a walk and zero SO’s. The big hurt, ouch! His record falls to 3-4.
DH RIAAN SPANJER-FURSTENBERG has a 1-3 night with a walk. Team is 1-11 with RISP and leaves 9 stranded. The offense………………..practically silent.
MATT CRIM continues his JEKYLL and HYDE act last night. Yesterday, he played the good guy, but to no avail as the BIRDS fall 2-1 to POTOMAC. CRIM goes 7.0 IP, with 6 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, and 3 SO. Gopher balls prove his undoing however, and the two solo shots are the only two runs scored by either side in the game. Too bad this isn’t golf. If it were, we might request the assistant greens-keeper to eradicate the furry problem. TYRELL HARRIS pitches a perfect eighth, but to no avail.
Only MIKE JONES has a multi-hit night going 2-3 with a walk and the PELICANS lone RBI of the evening.
3B DONEL LINARES is 2-3 as the PEARLS of MISSISSIPPI best the MOBILE club 2-1. No extraordinary batting performances last night. WILLIE CABRERA goes 1-4 but it’s a double and he later dents home plate with the winning run. C JESUS SUCRE has another hit (1-3) and a walk while maintaining a lofty .391 BA.
JUAN ABREU gets his third win of the year with two innings of three hit, one run ball with three SO’s. But a superlative performance by BRANDON BEACHY was wasted in the process. He goes 7.0 IP with TWO hits, 2 BB, and 7 SO. What a shame he couldn’t pitch a complete game.
JAIR JURRJENS is a winner last night leveling his record at 1-1 going 6.0 IP, 7 H, 1 HR, 4 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO. VLAD the IMPALER stakes out all three he faces to dry in the sun. MARIANO GOMEZ and STEVE MAREK finish up with a spotless inning of work apiece.
A veritable plethora of base knocks last night as the G-BRAVES fete a hit-fest for the home team. 17 hits and 9-21 with RISP. That’ll fatten up the old individual stats a bit. An unlikely candidate leads the evening’s festivities as SS DIORY HERNANDEZ has a rare 4-5 night while raising his BA to ,333. His hits plate 2 RBI and 2 R’s. 2B-LF MATT YOUNG continues his torrid hitting with a 3-5 night and 2 R scored. 3B OLD MAN RIVER is 2-5 last evening with a double, 2 RBI and 2 R’s scored. The FLAILING CUBAN is 1-1 with an RBI in a pinch-hit role. But the two young men we want to here from most SCHAFER (1-5) and FREEMAN are a combined 1-8. JORDAN’s double ultimately allows him to score. FREDDIE is 0-3 with a BB, and RBI.
Interesting fact–the Saint Louis Browns, in their last year in St. Louis (1952,I think) drew an attendance of only 85,000 fans that year–for the entire season! They moved to Baltimore and became the Orioles.
I am kinda in a bummed-out mood right now, though…Braves got swept, BMac K’d twice yesterday…but the real kicker is that “The Great Mouse Detective” refuses to load unto my computer! Guess they’re makin’ the movies tougher these days…
Hey, I wasn’t gonna do anything illegal! I payed for the movie, and I want it on my iPod! The innocent always suffer…
Carlos Zambrano with another meltdown in the Cubs dugout this afternoon. He got lit up by the White Sox in the first when Derick Lee misplayed a ball. He gets in Lee’s face in the dugout, they have to be separated and Lou takes him out after the 1st.
Zambrano is an embarrassment to the Cubs. The Cubs are a screwed up organization. Thank goodness the Braves aren’t that disfunctional!
I heard Ken Burns was working on his follow-up to Baseball kind of a long time ago and then recently I saw that it’s coming out in November I think. I’ve been really looking forward to that thing forever but I read it’s only going to be four hours.
I’m like, four hours? Are you kidding me? Everything that’s happened in the last twenty years? I mean, I think it originally came out in ‘94 but it hardly covered anything from the ’90s.
He does the longest freakin’ documentaries. Four hours seems a little short to me. I could go double that easily.
I imagine at least some portion of it will be devoted to all those effete journalists and baseball historians pondering how Bobby Cox could have the best pitching staff ever assembled and lose four World Series. In fact, it’s a shame they didn’t push it back till next year so they could end it with a bit about Bobby losing for a fifth and final time. Missed opportunity right there.
It’s amazing how things come full circle sometimes. Wasn’t Atlanta dubbed “Losersville” by Sports Illustrated in the late ’80s for all of our God awful pro sports teams? Then Bobby takes over as Braves manager for a second time in the summer of 1990, turns an abysmal team into perrenial World Series contenders for more than a decade but loses four times out of five and finishes no better than third over four of his last five years and Atlanta again ranks highly as one of America’s most miserable sports cities.
McFann, I am hoping for some rain up my way. My poor herb plants are drooping something awful. My original sage plant looks like it’s dying. I hope not. I really like sage.
Maybe Atlanta ranks high as a miserable sports city because of fans like you. After all, you seem pretty miserable just about all the time. Food for thought.
Don’t know if anyone noticed or not, but I think Heyward needs to move up on the plate a bit. Seems like he’s changed where he is in the box since he was hot. )
I do find it ironic and annoying actually when the people at Forbes magazine for example (why they feel compelled to make such a list, I don’t know) place the blame on Bobby and the Braves for being a miserable sports town. I mean, the Falcons, Hawks and Thrashers never won $&#%.
But I guess nothing makes a person more miserable than getting their hopes dashed year after year.
I mean, I certainly wouldn’t want to be a Cubs fan carrying on like my team’s ever won a damn thing. I’d rather have been there and lost but still when you have arguably the best team for fourteen years and you lose the last game of every season except one, you’re bound to be a little cynical.
I’m trying to sign into Buster Olney’s blog from today, in which he apparently discusses the Braves’ trade needs, but ESPN isn’t letting me sign in…arggh. Would anyone that’s an insider (and can sign in) mind copying and pasting here? Please?
DOB Speaking of your Johnny Cash tat. I just finshed Cash written by Johnny, sure that you’ve probably read it. I’m somewhat of an autobiography buff and that one is by far the best i’ve come across. Picked it up on a discount shelf for $4.50!
well, guys and girls, I am signing off for probably the weekend. Going to Alabama tonight with the hub for his diving cert. Not sure I’ll have any internet access. I’ll miss hanging with you for the games this weekend. Here’s to the Braves eating up some tiger this weekend
here you go.. Buster on the Braves trade situation (doesn’t really say much).
There are only 36 days remaining before the trade deadline, and the Braves appear to be in an excellent position — they have no glaring needs and are one of the few teams that aren’t scrambling for pitching, given that the return of Jair Jurrjens is now imminent. Matt Diaz will be back soon, and in the weeks thereafter, the Braves will determine what kind of role the surprising Eric Hinske will play down the stretch. Hinske was brought in primarily to be a weapon off the bench for Bobby Cox, and if Hinske figures to play at least semi-regularly, the Braves will probably look for another hitter to come off the bench.
By the way: The Braves are well aware that if they hire Fredi Gonzalez in a support role during the season, they’d set up an expectation that Gonzalez is the heir apparent to Cox without having gone through the process of exploring their managerial options. So there would seem to be a good chance that the Braves won’t hire Gonzalez during the season.
Phillies are hot as I said……..it’s up to the Braves to decide if they can play with the big boys.
Why didn’t I mention the Mets? Simple. Mets are a freak situation. A perfect storm of performance. They have too many weak links. They will be lucky to finish ahead of the Nats and Marlins!
In case you missed it, I have been a little busy the last 3 days Besides, you keep saying you are going Caveman soon, so I never know if you are going to be around…
I hope the Bravos jump on the Tigers early, because my college team goes up against those other Tigers(Clemson) tonight. The winner goes to the finals!! Go Cocks!
I know I posted this already and I hate to be one of “those” bloggers, but I really have to know- do you really have a Johnny Cash tattoo? And if you do, what are the odds of getting a photo of it?
cabravesfan: I do, indeed. Upper left arm. Johnny smoking a cig, white spread-collared shirt and blazer, slick-backed hair, from an iconic photo of him taken backstage in ‘58, I believe it was.
DOB, Has Bobby considered flipping Escobar and Heyward in the lineup. Heyward is really struggling hitting the ball to the right. Even Joe Simpson has stated that he is considrably further off of home plate and rolling over pitches. How bad is Heyward’s thumb at this point? Would he be better off NOT playing in the All-Star game and resting his hand?
Barring any unexpected developments, Jurrjens will start on June 30 against Washington, according to Bobby Cox. He wouldn’t say who’s getting bumped, said he’d let us know when he’s ready to (but me and everyone else I’ve talked to would be surprised if it’s not K.K.)
In the Braves game notes, Medlen is down to pitch the 30th, but that was before Cox said Jurrjens would start that day. The next day, July 1, is an off day, so if it’s Kawakami that gets moved to the bullpen, I wouldn’t be surprised if Medlen is available to pitch once out of the bullpen between now and his next start, which would presumably be July 2, unless the Braves skip his turn with the off day in there.
But this is all just me speculating, educated-guessing if you will. All we know for sure, per Cox, is that Jurrjens is scheduled to pitch June 30 barring any setback between now and then.
Let’s set a date midway between now and the end of the season. Escobar’s 1st homer under will be before that date and his over will be after that date. For the record I am taking the over.
Believe it or not, it’s almost the all-star break. Yunel has gone from a guy last year who looked like he was flirting with becoming elite to a guy who is at best a very average role player on a major league team.
Does everyone here actually realize the Braves are where they are now due to the performance of people NOT named Escobar, Jones, McCann?
It’s not like anyone is waiting in the wings to replace Escobar, but he shouldn’t be untouchable in the trade market. I mean c’mon, the season is almost half over and Escobar hasn’t even gone deep once!
I saw Frank Wren while ago talking to a handful of what looked to be Japanese executives or consulate types, had ‘em down on the field. Don’t think the relationship that the Braves have established with the Japanese is not important, because it is.

It’s awesome.
Go Braves!

Or maybe it’s just getting swept by a .500 team.

here you go..
