So I heard the end of the game on the radio.
Anybody want to guess what I thought of Bobby bringing in a guy who pitched in three of the last five games and who only appeared to be sharp in one of them?
I’m not criticizing Johnny Venters mind you. When he’s put out there as much as he has been over the past week, odds are he’s not going to give you his best as he would if he’s used sparingly.
No need whatsoever to have him close out the game in Minnesota. Medlen was at 92 pitches through 8 innings. Now if he, Medlen, starts the 9th and walks the first batter or gives up a hit, take him out. Bring in anybody you want. Hell, he could have brought in Wagner for all I care.
I’m not just trying to find something to complain about. I couln’t be happier that we won but it’s a legitimate point of contention. You just can’t keep overusing these guys.
I mean, was anybody surprised he gave up a run?

As I said, just the whole overuse of the bullpen thing.
Coming into tonight (and it went down, not up), Braves had used 182 relievers in 65 games, an average of 2.8 per game.
League average is 2.906 per game. Braves are 11th in the NL in most relievers used.
And we were 7th in the NL in # of IP by relievers.

Dude, he gave up two runs. If he’s on his game he shuts ‘em down 1-2-3.
It’s just knowing or at least having some sense based on recent performances who’s going to be most effective in certain situations. Something Bobby Cox doesn’t seem to know or have.
You had to like the way Moylan pitched tonight. Seems like he’s breaking out of his recent funk.
I certainly didn’t have a lot of confidence in him when he was brought in in Arizona after we had just taken the 1-0 lead and I think a lot of people felt the same way. And look what happened.
It’s nothing against the pitchers themselves. They’re all good. Hell, even Jesse Chavez kept us in that game against the Reds. He’s probably the worst guy in the pen but that’s about it. We’ve seen much, much worse over the years.

Mitchell you still havent given one reason why he wouldnt of been on other than he was used 3 of the last 5 games. That doesnt really count considering he had the last two days off. TnBrian is right, Simpson, Boog, and even DOB has also agreed that Cox overuses certain members of pen, and Venters success on the trip has made him a target. It’s just too easy to look back and say who Bobby (or any manager) should have used. Actually, I think this year Cox has been letting his relievers go a little longer than in recent years – like tonight, letting Venters stay for the 9th after pitching in the 8th.
Also, I think Bobby is intentionally giving Venters the opportunity to finish some games, give him some more responsibility. He’s earned it, and it’s valuable experience.
Lastly, and this is not exactly scientific – usually when a pitcher has an ERA of under 1, it’s likely he’s gonna give up a run or two pretty soon. Not many guys stay in that territory for too long. Especially not rookies.

Mitchell, Venters did exactly what he was supposed to do–throw strikes and get outs. He had a six run lead and the Rays are aver very good hitting team. He would’ve pitched differently had it been a one run game. Relievers are going to give up runs, even when they are on their game. You expect waaaay too much. Perhaps this is why you are always disappointed. There are pretty good players on the other teams too.

If your starter doesn’t pitch (well) deep into the game, it’s pretty tough not to use the bullpen. Seems to me, anyway.
I’d much rather have 5 or 6 good arms in the pen throwing 75 times a year than let young pitchers like JJ and Hanson rack up 230 IP while they’re under 25 years old.

Chip I also recall games where he would bring in guys like Bennett and Boyer with a 4-run lead and all they did was give up walks and hits till it was a 1-2 run game and he had to bring in Moylan, Gonzo, or Soriano. It was a lose-lose situation. He had a bad bullpen last year. Imagine that, a manager is only good when his players are good. Wow…

I’m in FL (hence the name), and get both the Marlins and Rays every game. I can assure you, those teams (and I bet all teams) have exactly the same “issues” regarding bullpen use.
Seems like some of the folks who pick apart every decision, every error, every loss, have only watched the Braves and somehow think that we’re uniquely inept at managing, bunting, and most everything else. Fact is, everybody’s pretty much equally inept. It’s part of what makes the game so great.

Jeez, the only reason Venters gave up a run is because the defense allowed a non-stolen base. Yeah, he walked a couple and gave up a legit hit, but he pitched well. The problem is, his stuff is just too good. He can’t locate it in the strike zone because it moves so much. He’ll learn, but I will take that ERA any day. Remember, he’s a rookie. We should all be happy to have an arm like his. And why did we recall Chavez instead of Dunn? I’m guessing it has something to do with options.
