Braves postgame comments following 10-4 loss to Rays

Brian McCann on Kenshin Kawakami’s night:

“His split-finger didn’t have the action that it normally does,” McCann said. “The bottom usually falls out and tonight it stayed up for the hitters to hit.”

McCann on Kawakami’s 0-9 record:

“He’s pitched so much better than his record,” McCann said. “He’s kept us in a ton of games. We all have confidence in KK and every fifth day he gives us a chance to win, and that’s all you can ask for.”

McCann on Rays’ ace David Price:

“When you throw 98 mph, it makes everything you do better,” McCann said. “It makes your offspeed better. You can get away with pitches that are up in the zone. That’s what makes him so successful. He’s able to paint at 97 and when he makes a mistake, 97 is hard to hit. I was very impressed tonight.”

McCann on the play when Carl Crawford scored on the single despite falling down after he rounded third:

“I’m not that quick,” McCann said. “When I caught it, I knew it would be a footrace and I probably wasn’t going to win it.”

Kawakami when asked about the losing streak:

“Aside from that, I gave up four runs in the first inning and that just gave the team a bad rhythm to start off with,” Kawakami said through his interpreter. “I’m just getting into a bad rhythm every start. It’s my fault that some of the games are going this way, so I have to improve on that and get into a better rhythm when I start a game.”

Manager Bobby Cox on Kawakami:

“He only gave up the two earned runs,” Cox said. “He didn’t control his breaking ball the very first inning and he got hit, but he only gave up two earned runs over five innings. That’s not the worst performance in the world, that’s for sure. We made a game out of it, we had it 5-3 and then we couldn’t hold them, at all.”

Cox on Chipper’s game:

“Chipper had a great night,” Cox said. “He had a homer, a double and just missed two other home runs, hit them against the fence. We out-hit them believe it or not.”

Even with KK’s lousy first inning, we could have won but for 2 reasons.

(1) 1-15 with RISP. Ouch. We had a load of base runners
(2) Resop was a disaster. Not even sure why he was pitching just up from the minors with our loaded bullpen, down just 5-3 and we just pitch counted their ace out of the game.

Having said that, I was impressed the way we made their ace work to the tune of over 100 pitches through 5 innings. We continue to show good plate discipline, just couldn’t get the big hit.

KK’s confidence is so far gone by this point, he should probably be given a rest. Resop, Medlen, heck, even JoJo would do — just change it up for a while, Bobby, please, for God’s sake…

Another question for McCann:

Why can’t a 3-time All Star ever throw a base stealer out, even on pitchouts?

Also, I had the feeling the Braves were back in the game until Resop came in. He and KK should both go back to Japan.

“He only gave up the two earned runs,” . While that may be true, Kawakami also allowed three other runs to score. And Cox, while you are painting the pretty picture, let’s not forget he gave up four extra base hits (I saw three of them) and they were absolute rockets. “We made a game out of it, we had it 5-3 and then we couldn’t hold them, at all.” Um, no – the game was winnable until YOU lost it. I am having trouble keeping up with how many games you have lost by poor decision making. Here’s hint for you to write down. When a relief pitcher (who is AAA fodder) comes into a close game – don’t let him blow it. Dude gives up a leadoff single, and you don’t pull him. He gets a first pitch strike to both Crawford and Pena (who NEVER takes a walk) and then surrenders four straight balls to each, loading the bases. And you STILL haven’t pulled him. He gives up a two-run base hit and now the game is over. You usually wait until after your 7th and 8th inning naps to pull these stunts. I guess the rain delay threw off your timing. One day, people will realize how horrible of a strategist you are. Some of us already know.

Were not playing a team that is going to lay down, there the best team in baseball right now, and we went against there ace. Hanson will go out tonight and shut them down to take this series to the rubber match and give the ball over to Hudson. We will get two outta three.

Let’s not kid ourselves here. The Braves are in first place in spite of Cox – not because of him. And can we please dispense with the spineless victim syndrome? Just because someone is critical, doesn’t mean they hate who or whatever they are being critical of. Cox’s attribute has always been that his players love him. But I think you would be hard-pressed to find ANYONE who will attest to his ability to run a game. I’m old enough to have watched thousands of games, both Braves and other teams, and no announcer, no ESPN columnist, no baseball writers (that I am aware of) have ever credited Cox for his managing of a game. You only have to look at the record to know this. The best pitching staff in the HISTORY of baseball. A top 5 offense in runs scored nearly every season for 15 years, a some would say Hall of Fame 3rd baseman, and countless starts littering the roster year after year…..and one championship.

Let's Go

June 16th, 2010
9:40 am

No matter what TPic and others think Bobby Cox is THE REASON this Braves team is in 1st place. He manages the game the way it’s suppose to be managed and could care less what people who know very little about baseball think. He protects and respects his players and all he ask in return is that they respect the game of baseball and show up ready to give 100% every game. He may chew some butt but it’s done behind closed doors, never in the media, and once it’s over it’s done.

No thanks to you Bobby. What a truly idiotic thing to say.

I have to admit, I honestly got a little semi-emotional at the thought of Chipper retiring and he and Bobby possibly going out together at the end of the season perhaps with a World Series victory.

But it’s not gonna f’ing happen. Nothing changes. We maybe in first place but as long as Bobby is around, winning a single series in the playoffs is just a pipe dream.

We will lose in the first round. I am sure of it. Now more than ever.

0 for 9 seems like a trend to me. The division race is way too tight to concede every fifth game. I know KK makes $6 million a year but we have several young arms who deserve his starts more. PS: If you have the Risen Son you have life, if not you’re dead in your sins and an enemy of God. Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your heart.

TPic, you said it.

That was a thing of beauty my man.

You know, I foolishly allow myself to have fantasies of winning the World Series and that somehow Bobby will find a way to get us there this time.

I tell myself I should know better but why? There really is nothing whatsoever preventing this team from winning the division and going all the way. There have been worse teams that have won it over the years. Why not us?

Well, the name is Bobby Cox. Some other names? How about Terry Pendleton, Kenshin Kawakami, Chipper Jones, Nate McLouth, Jesse Chavez among others who are not giving this team what they need to win games.

You know, it didn’t matter if we were the heavy favorites or the Cinderalla team, Bobby Cox always found a way to lose. Except that one time.

Let’s Go, I’m still waiting for some evidence. I don’t pretend to think Cox reads this blog, and I have more of a vast knowledge of the game than I think you would like to believe. But you still haven’t given an example of Cox’s strategy of helping his team win. So I will do it for you. The squeeze play game in Minnesota – he was lucid, coherent, even logical in his moves and they all worked. I will say that even if they had backfired, I would have supported his decisions. Sometimes the correct choices don’t yield the desired results. But that’s one game this season. I can think of four others that he personally cost the team a win.

The way a bunch of people up here were acting like I was excited……… But then I remembered hey wasnt he with us about 3 years ago and I didn’t remember any spectacular things from him but everyone said hey when we get resop up here our bull-pen will be better. Well Jesse Chavez could have done what I saw Resop done last night? I said maybe we need to trade JJ for an Alex Rios after tonights game I SAY IM DEAD WRONG. Even thought we need Alex Rios we need a 5th starter even more and we need another righty in the pen. Maybe we can trade one of our young rightys in the minors – besides tehanan and we can get Rios but man we need some pitching maybe we should have let Resop walk.

Bobby pitched Resop hoping he would have a good outing and garner some trade value. Guess that idea backfired. Also, I’d have a hard time believing Chipper would retire mid-season, as some have suggested. He feels a certain loyalty to Bobby and has too much integrity to quit now. Yes, I used integrity and Chipper in the same paragraph – even though he had like 6 mistresses at the same time…

Personally, KK has only gotten [prior to the current start] about 1.8 runs per game. If he pitched like Maddux, then he could get wins. But Maddux he isnt, and KK even admitted he wasnt pitching that well last nite. The bats have to scrape runs for EVERY starter, otherwise good pitching is wasted.

Personally though…I’d give KK some time off from the rotation, whether its the bullpen or maybe some ‘dead arm’ issues to get him on the DL.

Running Kawakami out there time after time and expecting a win is insane. I don’t care why he’s not winning. The bottom line is, HE”S NOT WINNING. So stop the insanity! Stop sending him out there! Chipper WAS horrible last night. He should retire. He struck out on a breaking ball with the bases loaded. He then failed again with two runners on with a chance to get us back in the game. The old Chipper would have feasted on their ace, but this Chipper is caught guessing too many times. To make matters worse Chip hit a meaningless homer in the ninth because there was no pressure. Good bye Chip, time for you to go.

To be fair (and I am an admitted Jones critic) he did have two hits last night, both for extra bases. I’d take that most nights; of course, it does have to be tempered with the 0-3 with runners in scoring position. And while he has always been indifferent about defense, lately he is pitiful, even by his low standards. The ball that Rodriguez hit (I know it was a rope) he never flinched at. The ‘natural’ reaction of a 3rd baseman is to dive for that ball – no thinking required. Ironically, he had to think to NOT dive for it. I’m not saying he could or should have made a play on it, but c’mon Clean Pants, where is the effort?

Ok Tpic – Here’s what Bobby has to work with

Jones batting 230 with 4 HR’s, breaking down and out 1/3 of the time
McCann batting 250 with 6 HR’s and vision problems
Yunel looking for his 1st HR and batting 230
A 20 Year old Rookie RF
A 5 th starter with a record of 0-9
McLouth batting 180
Your Ace – JJ – 0-3 and out for the first half of the season
A 15 million dollar pitcher with an ERA around 5.00
An injury prone 33 year old 1B – who had never played 1B until this season
A 40 year old closer playing in his final season – and his 40 year old setup guy on the DL
Melky Cabrera (Nuff said)
A team that endured an 0 -9 skid early in the year.

Put all that crap in a division with a team that has been to the World Series 2 years in a row – and a NY team that outspends you two to one –

Take all that “Talent” – and then lead them to first place in mid June – and what do you get for your troubles -

Some idiot named Tpic railing on you about how you don’t know what you’re doing.

Here’s hoping that the boys can get it together tonight and not allow any more 1st inning runs, and that they’re still in first place with the final out is recorded. I knew the Rays would be a challenge. The Braves are good enough to go toe-to-toe with them, though. It just needs to happen on the field. The frustrating thing is the LOBs from last night. It might have been better if the game had remained in rain delay….LOL.

Tom in ATL, you make some good points. And some not so good. Are you seriously going to claim that all the items on your list are problems? The ace is not on the DL; he is starting tonight’s game. Most teams would gladly have a catcher with 6HR hitting .250 – how many other teams have that? The 20yr old RF? He’s the best player on the team – I hardly think that warrants a concern. The 40yr old closer? Lights out. The 1st baseman? Arguably an MVP candidate in some eyes. I could go on, but hopefully you’ve gotten the point by now. Anyway, excuses can be made for just about every team in the league. This team isn’t alone in that regard. I won’t continue our conversation, however, because it’s clear that you’d rather call someone (who you haven’t met) an idiot rather than have an intelligent discussion.

I am so tired of Bobby saying: He only gave up 2 earned runs, because when the other team is hitting the ball all over the place, it means your pitcher is “HITTABLE”….HELLO. Will Bobby ever not defend a pitcher when he is not pitching well??? I realize it is painful for the Braves to admit they OVERPAYED KK, and he should be a bull pen pitcher and Medlen should be a starter, but is it all about being “right” or being “wrong”? Do bull pen pitchers get the kind of salary that starters do? What do you think?

Gotta love Bobby. The positive from last night’s game was that Yunel and Chipper showed signs of life. They need to keep it up. The Braves just left too many men on base to overcome the 4 errors and an average start by Kenshin. I still like him as a fifth starter, but I won’t cry if he goes to the bullpen. Having 6 pitchers when JJ comes back will be huge. Even if somebody gets hurt, we have a solid, deep staff.

What the hell is with this Mets team? They always suck. Hopefully, they will return to their sucky selves. We can’t take them for granted though. Just take care of our own business and playoffs are in sight.

It was Yunel’s error that led to 4 run first inning. Kawakami would have given up only one run if Crawford was out. It was a routine play that should have handled easily. KK’s fine. I’d suggest switch his order with Hanson or Hudson. He’s had tough luck all around. Maybe a switch will get him a win and start the trend.

David Price was hittable last night too

David Price has given up 5 hits or more in six games this year. . . hits, not runs. Lowe has given up 5 or more runs in five games.

Price is amazing but he was off last night. I think the rain delay affected both pitchers

So J-Man- You think those stats for the first half of this year are worth taking on 10+ mil per year worth of salary? The Blue Jays are very happy not to be paying it.

Same old tired story. Braves base runners in scoring position all night long…………..14 stranded.
No other team in the entire history of American baseball strands more runners than the Braves. They will set a record that will NEVER be broken. Impossible. It’s a wonder their entire pitching staff isn’t in therapy.
Pathetic.

I am so sick of what Bobby Cox thinks and says. Yes, he protects his players. I am not going to miss him after this season.

Nothing personal about the idiot comment – don’t know you from Adam – I just get tired of the constant railing on the manager everytime something doesn’t work out. The way I portrayed the team, 40 year old closer, injury prone 1B, 20 year old rookie etc. Is the truth. WHY have they been successful? Is it possible that the manager, who doesn’t throw them under the bus, bench them when they go o-4, keeps everyone involved and fresh by rotating and giving AB’s and opportunities, (See HInske, Venters, Conrad, Infante, Ross, – all valuable contributors due to the way Bobby utilizes them) MAYBE, just maybe, he is due a bit of credit for their success.
