Cox confirms Jones meeting to discuss retirement after 2010 – updated

Chipper Jones met with Braves officials Tuesday to discuss retiring at the end of the season.

He acknowledged as much to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution but said any announcement wouldn’t come until “at some point during the home stand.”

The Braves opened a six-game home stand against the Rays and Royals to this sudden news that their 16-year veteran third baseman had called a meeting with Braves manager Bobby Cox, general manager Frank Wren and president John Schuerholz.

“We talked to Chipper today,” Cox told reporters several hours before the game. “…He’s been thinking about this all spring, last winter about this would be his last year. Until he talks to you people I really can’t say right now.”

Jones first acknowledged retirement was his motivation for calling the meeting to three reporters, including one from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, as he entered Turner Field Tuesday afternoon.

“It’s obvious it’s something I’ve been thinking about, and that’s that,” Jones said.

He did not formally meet with the media.

“I need to go through the proper channels,” Jones said. “Once those have been taken care of, everyone’s questions will be answered.”

Jones was asked if issues to “take care of” had to do with settling finances. He has two years and $28 million left on his contract. “That’s fair to say,” he said.

Jones, 38, first brought up the idea of retiring at the end of the 2010 last year amid his struggles at the plate. His problems have continued into this season as Jones, entering Tuesday’s game hitting only .228 with three home runs, just two years after winning the National League batting title.

Jones has brought up the idea of calling it quits after the 2010 season in recent weeks but until now it wasn’t considered serious.

His father Larry Wayne Jones Sr., who was  in town for Tuesday night’s game, realizes he’s serious about it now.

“He talked to me about it about three or four months ago and I said, ‘Don’t made a decision based on how you feel right now, give it a chance,’” Larry Jones said. “And I’ve run out of ‘give it a chance.’ He’s a grown man. He’s 38 years old now…“I’m good with the fact that the end is near. I just hope the end comes with him playing well.”

Cox, for one, thinks Jones could still change his mind if he gets going at the plate again.

“Anybody that’s used to hitting .300 it wears on them some,” Cox said of the career .307-hitting Jones. “I personally think he can still contribute…If he gets going and hits .350 the rest of the way, I think (if I were him) I would change my mind.”

Since winning the National League batting title by hitting .364 in 2008, Jones’ offensive numbers have tailed off and he’s faced a steady stream of nagging injuries.

He missed seven of 11 games on the Braves recent road trip with a sore ring finger that has ailed him for several weeks.

Jones has talked openly this season about his willingness to surrender his third spot in the Braves order to rookie phenom Jason Heyward and lately has leant his support for backups Omar Infante and Brooks Conrad filling in at third base in his absence.

Jones was back in the lineup at third base for Tuesday night’s game.

AJC staffers Jeff Schultz, Curtis Compton and Chris Vivlamore contributed information to this report.

It’s time. He was great but now he is sub par. Might as well go out with Bobby, officially ending the great Braves era. Sure would be nice if we could get one more world championship first. Come on boys, let’s go out and win for the Chipper.

I consider this to be good news for the Braves. I’ve always been a fan of Chipper as a player and as a person, but, with his productivity dropping off significantly, and this team’s payroll limits, it would be wise to use his $10-15 mil salary slot to do something like re sign Troy Glaus, or persue a more productive player than Chipper.

Chipper Jones belongs in the Hall of Fame, even if he never hits another homer. He will finish his career with an over 300 batting average, and over 400 homers. He’s had a great career, but, with his performance the last two years, his best days are behind him, and it’s best for himself and the team that he retire.

I think he will retire. He sees better what we see. His body is breaking down and it is highly unlikely he will regain the production we have seen from him. The brutal truth is that due to age, he has become the highest paid singles hitter in baseball. He know that and due to his professionalism he realizes that contract isn’t helping the organization.

So, he’s going to convince the GM and manager that it is time he retires. He’s been a class player his whole career and he’ll go out a class player.

Actually it would not shock me if he announces that he is retiring immediately to be honest.

I think the hand issue may be a permanent thing (arthritis) that he will be dealing with all season long.

He may also stay on for the rest of the season, but do so as a pinch hitter and spot starter.

In that case I wonder if Brooks would get a full time gig or if they might consider moving Glaus to 3B and put Hinske at 1B. HMMMMM

This is more to do with a guy at his low point due to injuries than an announcement I would hang my hat on.

Take whatever he says with a grain of salt. He needs to go in the 15 day DL and not travel with the team. Heal up and clear his head IMHO.

Right now he is living in a very frustrating and ego bruising place – on the bench and or ineffective at the plate.

This is the correct and dignified thing to do. It’s best for the team next year; it’s best for Chipper. Makes sense to go out with the only manager he’s ever had. I am not really down with having a press conference to say which way you are leaning, but if he indeed does retire at season’s end, there should be no ill words about Chipper. The guy was the best ATLANTA Brave, won an MVP, a batting title, selflessly moved to left field, took pay cuts, and walked a way from millions of dollars because his skills were on the decline. It’s sad to me because I was happy to see him rejuvinated the past few years and thought he would play much longer. The end comes quickly I guess. Hopefully and he and Bobby go out with a bang.

While it would be nice for Chipper to get some extra attention from Braves fans in other cities, I really don’t think Chipper is completely done just yet (unless he is hiding some worse injury). The lack of hitting is a concern but part of it is just bad luck (with the exception of the decrease in power). The subpar defense at 3B, on the other hand, is really what prevents Chipper from truly living up to his contract to me (and to defensive metrics if subscribe to those).

Bottomline, I’m still refusing to believe that we might lose Chipper next year but this is a better way to go then what happened with Griffey and quitting in the middle of the season.

The best chance the Braves have of winning a World Series is to combine a retirement of Bobby with the retirement of Chipper in the same season. There should be some kind of wonderful karma to be had from that.

Otherwise, it’ll just be another year.

Keith J, what are you smoking? Let TP take over for Bobby?!?!? That would be going from bad to worse… much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much worse.

Fire TP, hire Chipper as batting coach, and bring in someone with a little fire to be the new manager.

I will miss Chipper, he’s been one of the best this organization has ever seen. I do think it’s time for him to hang up his spikes, but my main worry is that there aren’t any players in the system to take over for him.

Sign Glaus to a 2-year deal, move him to 3B, bring up Freeman next season, and trade a surplus pitcher for a 3B prospect. Done, done, and done.

Chipper next season’s hitting coach, and Smoltzie next season’s pitching coach? Will have to see it to believe it – unless the Braves give him a postion in the organization with big bucks. It would be difficult for anyone to leace 28 million on the table (14 mil for each of the next two years after this year).
As far as him being given a significant postion in the organization — For the most part, former stars just do not turn out to be great baseball administrators. Look at AAron for example – At first, after his retirement, when he had a more significant role in the administration of the Braves – they were very unsuccessful. This is not to day that AAron should not have an honoray position with the Braves with a decent salary – since salaries where not that high when he was playing.

Everyone complains about no small ball and waiting for the big one to bail us out for a win with Bobby, but with TP making the calls we will play baseball the way it should be played. Google an interview with TP about his days in St. Louis as a player and listen to his thoughts about what he learned from his manager and his thoughts about how the game should be played. As much as I’ve liked Chipper and want to see him reach 3,000 hits and 500 homers, he’s a drag on the team at the plate, on the field, in the budget, and on the roster. He’s taking up a roster spot and getting paid $14 million, preventing the Braves from signing others.

He needs to have either a miraculous comeback or retire. If Chipper joins Wagner in leaving, that’ll be over $20 million the Braves will have saved to spend elsewhere.

Chipper should continue playing until he goes over 500 home runs and guarantees his place in Cooperstown. Remember what happen to Fred McGriff “Crime Dog” when he retired. McGriff finished only 7 home runs short of 500 with 493. Most fans felt since McGriff was so close to 500 home runs he would easily make it into the HOF. Wrong! When the voting came up last year, McGriff wasnt even close and its a shame because he is so close to 500 and was so spectacular during his career it makes you think that the voters should all be pycho analyzed for their insideous votes of denying McGriff entry into the HOF. McGriff has done as much or more as anyone who is currently in the Hall of Fame. The voters are just plain ignorant and dont realize how great the Crime Dog really is. McGriff has done as much as Lou Gerig, Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Frank Robinson, Ken Griffey, Alex Rodriguez and all the other players who are in there. If McGriff is denied entry into the HOF, then EVERYONE WHO IS CURRENTLY ENSHRINED needs to be removed from Cooperstown. Now Chipper will get his chance to take his rightful place alongside the all-time greats if he just hangs on for about 7 more years to compile the stats to get in. Good Luck Chipper; keep chipping away at 500 dingers.

BraveMan, cap space? I did not know that MLB implemented a salary cap overnight. Perhaps you mean budget space? The Braves will pay Chipper’s salary whether he retires today or at the end of the season, as he has earned it with his good work and salary deferals.

Takes a real man to know when he is done. Must be one of the toughest decisions for a professional athlete to go against their competitive nature. I admire you, Chipper, for taking responsibility and action. Don’t let it happen to you ala Smoltz and Glavine.

He wasn’t calling you an idiot for your so-called “opinions”. He was calling you an idiot because you don’t seem to remember/have any appreciation for what Chipper has meant to this team, how many times he has gone to the front office and reworked his contract to allow them to sign other players, and also the occasion he went and volunteered to move to the OF to help the team(how many players of his calibur have done that EVER?) Either you aren’t a Braves fan and come here to be obnoxious, or else you are one the kind of fans I frankly don’t care for, one who does not know or care about the players that make up the Braves legacy. I would love to see Chipper take a swig from the Fountain of Youth and get back that .300+ batting average. Whatever the announcement may be, I hope he has made a decision based on facts and not emotion. He has always been a team player, and I don’t expect that to change with his decision. Chipper, you have my support if you choose to retire or if you choose to play-out this season and re-evaluate at the end of the year.

Yep, I figured the Chipper situation would come up as soon as we got back home even though it doesn’t seem like it, it is allmost mid June and the numbers for Chipper sadly are what they are. Like him or not you got to respect him, it takes allot to walk away from that kind of money, and to be man enough to know that your not the “man” anymore. I think Bobby would have let him 200 in the 3 hole all year if it was up to him, but Chipper is taking him off the hook with this move and this is whats best for the team. Chipper can still be very valuable this year, but Bobby,Frank and him have to figure out what his role should be. Just think if the magic keeps going this season, this could be a Braves season for the ages with a scrappy, determined team trying to send Bobby,Chipper and Wags, three for sure hall of famers off into the sunset on top of baseball. You couldn’t makeup a story better than this. Go Braves!

While I have been a huge fan of Chipper since he broke in in 1993, It is time for him to relinguish his 3rd spot in the line-up and retire at the end of the season. Since the Braves are going to continue to owe him a pile of cash, it would be great to see him added to the coaching staff as hitting instructor while moving Terry P to bench coach. This may also free up some cash to allow the Braves to re-sign Troy Glaus and move him to 3rd base. Then Hinske and Freeman can man 1st base in 2011 once the Braves re-sign Hinske. Maybe the Braves can then trade or drop McClouth and trade for or sign a speedy center fielder who can be a true lead-off batter. Chipper has always been a non-selfish guy and I am sure he will do what is best for the team!

When I was a kid a collected baseball cards, all the great players has a decade plus of awesome stats, and then 2 or 3 or 4 years of mediocre stats. Thanks Chipper. You and Maddux are my Braves. @ Runnin: Ken Griffey, Jr. did not do it the right way. Ken Griffey, Jr. quit on his team in the middle of a season rather than accept the role they were asking him to play. Go back and read the statement he gave when he announced that he was hanging them up. He said words to the effect of, “while I still believe I can perform at this level, I can’t do it without getting starts to iron out my swing.” In essence, “since you guys won’t let me start anymore, I’m taking my glove and going home.” Griffey isn’t what he used to be, but he could still have done what the team asked him to do and retire at the end of the year… or after last year, when the team could plan for his absence. It bugs me that nobody out there is willing to say anything bad about Ken Griffey, Jr. He was a lot of fun to watch when he was in Seattle the first time, but he showed his true colors to the world after things started to go bad in Cincinatti. He was surly with the media (still is), surly with a lot of fans, and then just flat out didn’t care when he was no longer the focal point in Seattle (as in, he took naps in the clubhouse).

No, Chipper’s doing it the right way, if this is indeed what he’s doing. He’s offered to give up the #3 spot in the lineup. He’s mentoring the young players on the team. He’s trying like hell to get back on track. And if he still isn’t able to be a star at the end of the year, he’ll hang it up rather than tack on a few Griffey-With-the-White-Sox-and-M’s type years on the end of his career. Keep in mind that he’s got years remaining where he could collect money from the Braves just by showing up. He’s not doing that. Chipper Jones plays the game the right way, and he appears to be determined to leave it the right way.

Well, this should answer a lot of people’s criticisms of Chipper. He wants to take a full year to see if he can get it back, but he is willing to walk away from the rest of his contract rather than stay around and embarrass himself and hurt the team’s chances of winning the next couple of years. He’s been one of the all-time great Braves and a HOF player, and he’s not going to let things end like it did with Glavine and Smoltz. I had said all along I believed he would; why would he even bring up the possibility if it wasn’t something he was willing to do? It’s good to see him follow through.

Treat the guy with the respect he has earned and deserves. He is almost 40 years old, it’s part of life. He won a damn batting title at 36 years old. I think this is a good move, it puts it on the table… but if he does really improve, then he shouldn’t retire. I think he has gotten too much pressure to stay healthy and do amazing. Besides his rough patches, you can still see the beautiful swing and plate discipline. Lets not forget his OBP, which is the reason we have one of the most runs scored per game, considering we are no higher than 10th in Average, Homeruns, etc…
He is still productive. He gets so many walks because pitchers KNOW what he is capable of. I think he would be great in the 2-hole, on base for the guys behind him…

Wren re-signed Chipper that offseason after nearly getting eviscerated by “fans” for not re-signing Smoltz. I think it was an attempt to avoid a similar fiasco this past offseason, and to offer an olive branch to fans by making sure that Chipper would be a career Brave. I wonder how small a contract Chipper would’ve accepted to give it one last shot this year. Either way, Chipper doesn’t really seem to be hurting the Braves too badly so far this year, and I can understand wanting to play the season out just to make sure he can’t hack it anymore.

my first thought when I saw the headline and the upcoming press conference was that he was retiring today (why else would you have a press conf now) unless clearing the money means they make a move at the trading deadline. Just my initial thought after what Griffey did a few weeks ago.

Keith J: You hit it right on the money if people haven’t figured it out by now. Terry withdrew from the Marlins, Nationals and Rangers positions when they were available. Bobby’s been prepping Terry for the GM spot. Now with Chipper has hitting coach that would be very sweet. Keep the coaching postions in-house for the futrue.

Anyone suggesting that TP take the managers position is on crack. No way. TP is not a manager!! And the Chipper to batting coach stuff is silly, or is it? I think he’ll take some time off and deprogram. Who knows whether he would want to stay in the game?

But saying that….. Please no TP as manager stuff. Don’t go there, no……………………….!

I will not miss this guy. We made several trips to spring training over the years. We never made it to the games, but paid good money to watch the first days of practice. Like other on here have mentioned, he had no time for the kids that stood there for hours to meet the players. Brian McCann, Jeff F, Kelly Johnson amoung others would stand and sign until everybody got the autograph. This clown would stay as far away as possible. On one occasion he was walking by and said he couldn’t stop to sign for a kid that couldn’t have been older than 5 because he said the coaches needed him in the bullpen. Fair enough maybe that was true. But he went on to say he would be back shortly and take care of it then. This kid stood there for 30 min only to see Chipper return and walk away from the stands out to the first baseline, and follow it down to first base where he could walk into the dugout without being bothered. Yells from the kid and his father didn’t phase him. I once was a fan, but this showed me how shallow he really is. See ya later, don’t let the door hit you on the way out.

I feel actually pretty sad about this…he’s been a great player for the Braves for many years…and all of the anger/etc seems to be circulate around whether he’s chosen to retire at just the right moment. So he stayed a year or two longer than he should have…and he’s just a middle-road player (middle-road for the hottest team in baseball) is that so terrible?

To those that think that he will retire this year….are you serious? The way this team is playing, Bobby’s last year, and a chance to make the playoffs and possibly a penant/championship. No, he won’t retire immediately, but I think he should retire after this year.

He’s had a great career, but don’t stretch it out too long. Better for the Braves and better for his legacy.

Glaus to 3B means about 5 trips to DL each year. Glaus doesn’t have the hammies to play third base anymore. Has anyone watched him walk around, much less run?

Resign Glaus and keep him at 1B. Find a 3B.

Geeze this sounds like a memorial page on a Funeral Home website! I’m sad to hear he is wavering… go ahead and do it if you are going to do it. If the flame isn’t there or you just can’t, then you CAN’T! Be man, say what you think and bow out gracefully. I’ll admit I’d be dissappointed to not see him on the field but if it is HIS time, so be it. Do some around the park appearences but let Bobby enjoy his time in the spotlight – at least his swan song won’t affect the team’s performance.

Obviously I’m not a HUGE Chipper fan, but I do think he ranks among the greatest to where the Braves jersey and his legacy deserves to be preserved, not watered down with a .225 batting average…

“Joshua, I disagree (though it would make some sense). Re-sign glaus to play third with the money we would open up, and open the door for freeman at first.”

I think that is the other distinct possibility, but I don’t favor that nor think it more likely for a couple of reasons. It will not likely happen this year because to date Freddie Freeman is not ready by any measurable metric to take over full time duties on a major league roster. That being the case, it is likely that for at least this season, Yunel will move to third. After this season, I suspect the Braves will attempt to resign Glaus for one more year (which may not be a possibility given his torrid pace thus far) and seek to acquire a big name infielder (quite possibly Dan Uggla). I think that the ultimate deciding factor here is going to be wanting Glaus at first where he is less likely to sustain any injury so that he can play as many games as possible.

Whatever Gimmme a Break, let’s take Chipper off of the Braves on their historic run & implement Griffey Jr. I see more than 1 championship, yes Griffey is a little bitter because like all great competitors it hurts at the end, too realize you will never get to wear that ring. If it were not for Justice’s home run, the Braves & Cox would = Bills & Levy. As for nuturing so called talent look at all the up & coming talent that has passed through the Braves system( one of the best farm systems during their run ) Andruw Jones never learned to hit while playing with Chipper & had the same potential as Heyward. I doubt giving Chipper his father- Buhner, Martinez, & Randy Johnson would have worked any differently. So lay off Griffey, they never surrounded him with great talent & the guy gave every ounce he had. To many times this future HOFer was carted off the diamond for going all out for the ball, not straining a oblique swinging the damn bat !!!!! I don’t have anything against Chipper’s contributions is an above avg hitter & decent team player. But degrading a guy like Griffey is blasphemy, & once again its the media stories that reflect the end of his career. Here’s another thing, during the great playoff runs were’s Chipper’s great HOF leadership moment ???

As a lifelong Braves fan, I hate to see one of the most iconic players in Atlanta history coming to the end of his career… but for all he’s done, he will always be appreciated by Braves fans, even if this last season winds up being sub-par compared to what we usually expect.

He is a true professional baseball player… he’s not hanging around for the money or titles or glory or fame… he wants to play to his highest level and compete hard every night and be productive and help his team win games. When he realizes he can’t do that as much as he’s used to, well, he’s making some hard decisions. It can’t be easy for a lifetime major leaguer, but I wish him the best.

I met chipper when he was an up-and-coming minor leaguer in about 1991… it was amazing to watch his rise to team leader, league MVP and World Series champ. Here’s hoping that the Braves make one more playoff run for Chipper and that he gets a good, dignified, classy retirement from the team.

Good luck CJ!

The Sham, I think the only reason Chipper is leaving a caveat is in case he can stay healthy and catch fire. I think the fire’s still there, which is one reason he came back for this season and really wants to finish this season. He wants to play, but not if he can’t play any better than he has. He feels that he’s still capable, so he wants to leave the door open just in case he starts getting the results he feels he can.

I’d hate to see Chipper leave. He’s the ONLY reason I have put up with cox and paid for the MLB package the last 5 years. Where I live it’s the Rays, the Marlins or nothing — uh, make that nothing, less than nothing and no baseball at all.

We paid Bruce Sutter a wad of cash to do nothing for a few years. At least Chipper puts butts in seats and has contributed greatly to this team and given up a lot of $$$$ in restructured contracts, etc. just to play here.

The LOVEFEST is ON……Either some of you guys are too young to have followed Chipper’s career or have VERY short memories.Chipper has had a very productive career and I wish him the BEST! Yes, he will probably be in the HOF but he is NO Mickey Mantle…..who played in pain most of his career. These last 3-4 years when we needed him the MOST,he would call out sick (ingrown toe, ring finger, oblique, beer drinking forearm, pimple on nose…etc). I guess we thought that this day would come eventually. But, it sure did sneak up fast on me. Guess I’m starting to get old or something..LOL. Sigh….I remember his rookie season as if it were yesterday. I hope Chipper’s open to maybe being the hitting coach next season if he does retire. It would also depend on, of course, who is being selected to be the next Braves’ manager. On 2nd thought, doesn’t Chipper have to do some time as a minor-league coach first? All I know is that the team has remained focused (w/o Chipper in the lineup) thanks to both Bobby & Chipper (as the captain of the team — officially or unofficially) as well as the coaches. His knowledge of hitting & the NL opposing pitchers could be helpful to the “youngsters” on the team. I just can’t help but think that if Chipper could get completely healed that he might find his swing again (he traditionally does well the last half of the season). But, again…it’s not my decision. I wish him well no matter what. Future 1st ballot Hall of Famer!

He will retire after this season. If you recall, last season he said he would not be a mediocre player and drain the team finacially. Say what you will about Chipper, but he puts the team first. He has taken less money in recent years to help the team, moved to left field, and asked Bobby to drop him in the lineup this year. I agree though he doesn’t need to announce it if he thinks for a moment he’ll be back. Do it like Bobby, announce it and then have your farewell tour. Bobby couldn’t back out on his announcement now b/c of how every city he travels to honors him!
The last game of this season will truly be the end of an era…very sad. I think in his heart he also knows he doesn’t want to play for anyone but Bobby, can’t say that I blame him.

Jake, Smoltz ended up missing almost a whole season, the whined about how little the Braves wanted to pay him to pitch half a season after he recovered from the surgery. Smoltz was a great player and a great competitor, but don’t tell me how much more of a team player he was than Chipper. Chipper also re-worked his contract and moved positions to help the team. And Chipper’s damned if he does and damned if he doesn’t with you folks. If he plays while hurting, he’s hurting the team by taking a spot in the heart of the lineup when he’s not at full strength. If he doesn’t, he’s a wimp.

On postscript: I’m actually starting to get very sad now about this. Chipper was/is the consummate team player. His surprise pop-ins on DOB’s blog….all the times he gave himself up in the offseason to renegotiate his contract just to work out a way financially for this team to afford that hitter or that pitcher the team so desperately needed. And, I’ll always remember how he OWNED Shea Stadium, thus naming his son Shea. He has been one of the main reasons why I have often gone to see the Braves play (besides the obvious reason of supporting the team). I just can’t imagine now seeing #10 on the ball field any longer. Um, actually Cooperstown is reserved for the greatest players of all time. Not the greatest Brave, or your favorite player, but the best – period. He has had a real good career. I won’t discount that. But before we hand him a plaque, let’s be objective. Was he a great (or even good) third baseman? No. Was he one of the most feared hitters in ANY year of his career? No. He may one of only a few players who won an MVP without having led his league in any offensive category. He did win a batting title, barely qualifying with enough plate appearances as he milked it down the stretch. This season will be the 8th of 9 where he didn’t reach 100 rbi – this from a #3 hitter. Are you kidding me? Joe Carter knocked in 100 every year batting .230. Check the career stats – thay are nice numbers. But Hall of Famer players do not have nice numbers – they have great numbers. And before I hear the “he was the 3rd best switch-hitter ever”, that makes him unique – not great.

I saw someone say say he is not a hall of Famer. You are crazy. He is one of the five greatest third baseman but if you want to know how good he really was/is. He is the only switch hitter in the MLB history with 400 homesrun and a lifetime .300 avg. There has been alot of switch hitter come through this league and to be the only one to do something like that is special. He will be missed

JMac12203

I did give him credit. If you paid attention to what I said, I DID say he had had a good career; the fact is that his time has come and gone, and he is wasting a roster spot that a PRODUCTIVE player could be using. Chipper is too injury prone to continue to produce. Like now – how many games has he missed with a hangnail? .228 and 3 home runs might be ok for a #8 hitter, but it is totally unacceptable for a #3 hitter. GOODBYE CHIPPER.

C’mon Chipper. You’ve had a great career. Key word being “had.”

Leave with some dignity. Leave with a .306 lifetime BA. Leave because the fact is we don’t even notice when you aren’t in there at third. Your replacements ARE producing at least as well….. maybe even better than you.

C’mon Chipper. Just pack it in. We can use that salary to better this team.

Seems a shame to me. Physically I think he could go another couple of years and get 500 homers, but mentally he just doesn’t seem to be into it and I really believe this is what is affecing his perfomence the most. I hope his numbers are good enough for HOF but unlike others I,m not sure….and please spare me all the stat comparisons to other switch hitters. Remember Chipper also played in the PHD era and his stats will be scrutinized just like all the others that put up big numbers in this era.If Mark McGuire cant get in with his numbers what makes anyone think that Chipper is a slam dunk for HOF.Remember how big he was for a while when he won MVP and now he is constantly breaking down physically? Win one for the Chipper?

Seriously, Chipper retiring would be one of the saddest days in sports to me. That said, one of the most difficult things for any of us as fans is to watch our hero’s grow old. So many of the greatest players, in any sport, try to stick around to long. Very few of our heros call it a career to early. The incredible ego and self confidence that allowed them to be great in the first place is probably a large part of what causes them to stick around to long.

Thank you Chipper, for all the joy you have given me as a baseball fan.

Braves28 – I was afraid you’d take that stance. Do you know who is the only player to have 147 steals, 230 homeruns, played 500 games at three positions and once lead each league in batting average? Well, neither do I. But I’m sure some database could find that guy. Would he be a Hall of Famer? My point is only that we tend to define greatness by uniqueness. Again, Jones has had a very good career – just not a Hall of Fame career.

This is a game-day distraction. When the team is in first place, hitters are hitting, pitchers are pitching and us bloggers are complaining come rain or shine, why mess with this right now? This could be something for the upcoming three day all-star break or perhaps the next Monday off, but not right now. The team has been doing fine without him, a fact Chipper acknowledges.

It’s Chipper’s call. No one is going to talk him out (he has a guaranteed contract), no one is going to force him out and he will retire when he is ready. Lets let him make that decision. While we are waiting, lets concentrate on those that are playing and not thinking of quitting. We have the rookie of the year, one of the best bullpens in baseball, a great starting staff, the league’s hit leader, the league’s rbi leader and a manager who would love to go out in style. Let’s enjoy this moment and leave personal decisions to those that make them.

If Chipper stays, get well Chipper and get back in the order and join the fun. If its time, go out with dignity. Don’t keep retirement a headline issue, like Favre. Don’t wait till you are caught napping, ala Griffey and don’t take the moment away from 24 other guys working hard to win this thing one game at a time.

Speaking of Gary Carter and his .259 batting average, 2184 hits and 1445 RBI’s, he will NEVER see the day he could hold Chippers batting glove. Oh and 396 hrs. Look at his number 5 of the last 6 years as well.
Chipper didn’t even come up as a power hitter and still has 429 HR and as many doubles to match.
Look at the 2 switch hitters ahead of him, both in the HOF and Chipper lost his first year in 1993 in tearing his ACL right prior to entering the season, and half of 1994, and the start of 1995because of the strike. In his prime he lost valuable time, in which his numbers would be even more inflated.

Blogsters can argue all they want, but it’s not even debatable – Chipper Jones will be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame on his first ballot. Debate whether or not you agree, but it is going to happen. Many teams don’t have a nationally recognizable face of their franchise, which is what Atlanta has had since Chipper arrived. First class organizations honor guys like that, as do their fans. It will be tough for Braves fans to see Chipper leave along with Cox – if it happens – but he’ll be passing the mantle on to a younger group that includes Heyward. Youngsters shouldn’t forget that prior to 1991 the Atlanta Braves were a joke of a franchise, even during the handful of seasons they had a respectable record. Chipper and Cox – and plenty of others – changed that to what you see now.

I dont see how anyone could have anything negative to say about Chipper Jones. He has been the classiest guy since day 1 in the bigs. He is not staying around to collect a paycheck. He had one bad year and that was last year, he said if he has another year like that he would retire and thats what he is doing. There is no way you can knock him at all, he has stuck to his words. All the moves he has made over the years to help the team win and now realizes that the team is winning so he is going to step down for good. Anyone that wanted to see him go(you know who you are) is really going to miss seeing him at the hot corner. He has been the backbone on this team and the face of the franchise. There are a lot of young talent out there in the bigs that need to look at chipper jones and how much of a team player he was and try to imitate atleast half the team player chipper was.

Thank You Chipper for all the great years of hard work, great plays, and great memories. You will be very much missed long after this season is over. (Standing up and Applause)

Parker, why would he even mention retiring if he was going to hang around the rest of his contract? It’s just asking for it to be thrown in his face. If he was planning on sticking around until the end of his contract, he never would’ve talked about it in the first place, much less re-iterated it multiple times.

He said at the end of last year he would retire AT THE END OF THIS SEASON if he couldn’t be the type of player he wanted. That’s the timeframe. That’s always been the timeframe. Those of you who want him to retire today, tough. If he doesn’t get on track, he will retire at the end of this year, no sooner.

Chipper is the true picture of a “team player” and one who shows great class as a ballplayer.
It is sad watching an era close out! I remember the excitement surrounding Chipper when he was drafted and while he was coming up to the majors. I remember the year (94′) when he came into spring training with high expectations and then hurt his knee (ACL) and was out for the whole year. Then to come in in ‘95 and should have won the ROY! (Where is Hideo Nomo today???)
Now we are watching the end of his playing days… sad how quickly it all passed.
What is even worse – are those who want to railroad him off the team and out of town as quickly as they can…. very sad!
Enjoy the days of watching him play, even though they are not what they used to be, we owe a great deal of thanks and honor to Chipper for the memories he has provided (too many to mention right now!). Many of those pennants hanging at Turner Field have a lot of Chipper contributions – without him – they would not be there!
I will be real emotional the day Chipper retires, and I will be real emotional (with excitement) when he enters the HOF. I have watched his whole career, and a couple thousand of his games or more… Good memories, great memories! Thank you Chipper!

If Chipper retires after this year, I’d almost bet he’ll be more revered than Glavine, Smoltz, Maddux and even possibly Aaron, because he’ll have been the only one to stay a Brave his entire career.

Chipper is the man!!! I hope he doesnt retire at the end of the year. He can still turn it around this year and contribute (Still get on base a lot). I want to see Chipper get to 500 Home Runs, but I think he would have to go to an AL team and Pinch Hit.

Chipper should hang it up–his swing from the leftside has gotten so long and so slow–Major League pitchers love seeing him come up–a very easy out.
Mark my word, this is going to be a Brett Farve deal–the Braves should offer to pay him for 2011 and see if he will hit the trail.

All good things must end. A HOFer that, do to age and injury, has diminished skills. When you can’t do what you used to do, its time to go. Don’t pull a Willie Mays and hang around when you have lost it. Chipper has done it all. MVP, batting crown, World Series champion and up until the last 2 years has been very consistent with excellent numbers.

Matt, Chipper wants to play his whole career as a Brave. He doesn’t want to “hang on” as a DH for some other team. And I don’t know that not playing defense would do much for his hitting since the middle of last year. DH’s are expected to really hit. Chipper wouldn’t be a valid DH with these numbers.

i didn’t say you were an idiot — that was the other guy — i just said you were classless, for disparaging a guy who has been nothing but a team player for his entire career.
as clay said — the guy had one bad season and said if it happened again he would quit — and that’s what he appears to be doing.
i would say he is the greatest atlanta brave ever — more years than hank, and being an everyday player gets him the nod over smolz/glavine/massux ….. so why would anyone trash him?
how could he possibly have handled this any better?

Chipper Jones would get alot of respect if he retired at the end of the season instead of holding the team hostage with his contract and not contributing like he should while making alot of money. The Braves also need to get rid of Yunel Escobar and bring up Freddy Freeman.

Oh the folly of tweeting too soon. It happens to everyone.

Anyway this is all just pent up emotion and outright frustration for Chipper. Put him on the DL, get his hand checked out and properly fixed.

He should take the time to clear his head and perhaps skip the next road trip to work on his hand and his psyche.

Another idea should be to hang up the switch hitting thing. Focus on the side that is the least painful and most effective. Bag the other for good.

It may give him a few more years of effective baseball.

Aw, did I hurt its little feelings wif the big bad truth? I enjoy Braves baseball, and Chipper, too. I’ve been amazed at his ability, just shook my head in amazement at his approach at the plate. I appreciate the guy as a great hitter in my favorite game.

But his ego, his mouth, his retirement, and his present day suckage are all separate issues. And this “classiest guy ever” business is for the birds. He’s about the same as most, certainly not as bad as some. He’s in an uncomfortable spot because he started grandstanding in the papers about not going out in a silly way and he’s been tripping over his own flapping lips once a month ever since. If he was mister class, he’d hush, play the game (or not), and get to all that when he’s got a decision. Not keep begging “please love me” with his retirement fidgets.

This is a sport, no one in their right mined should belittle a player because most of his good days, are behind him, unless it’s the hitting coach. I don’t care how Chipper acts outside of the diamond, only between the lines and when the time comes to give it up, he should walk away, with pride and his head held high. And I’m honestly not sure why they ever said they were going to bring Glavine up last year. Medlen was starting to show what he’s capable of. They should’ve just kept Medlen in the rotation or planned to bring up Hanson in the first place.

Just think of the young players lost due to not trading Chipper at the end of the ‘08 season. As usual the Braves held on to him too long. As it is now he’ll just retire and the Braves will get nothing of value except the money saved on the contract. The Braves are loyal to a fault sometimes….Didn’t they learn anything from the Alexander for Smoltz trade years ago? Best Wishes Chipper!”

Three things wrong with your post:

1. The Braves could not trade Chipper after the 2008 season without his permission, as he was a 10-5 player. This has been repeated 100’s of times over the blog over the last couple of years, but apparently you and others have trouble with reading comprehension.

2. The 2008 season was one in which Chipper won the batting title, so why would they trade him away, even if they could?

3. You haven’t stuck your head into a blender yet.

Chipper Jones, in my opinion, is a first-ballot hall of famer. I know that Chipper is aware of the legacy he has left on the diamond. My advice to Chipper is to somehow try and hang on for another 5 years, not for the money but for the statistics. If you dont finish your career with at least 500 home runs and 3000 hits you wont ever as much as sniff Cooperstown. If you dont believe that just look at Fred McGriffs career. Fred finished just 7 home runs short of 500 and cooperstown so far has SLAMMED THE DOORS SHUT ON MCGRIFF. Whats ironic about it is that it is a cold-blooded crime to keep Fred McGriff (the Crime Dog) out of cooperstown. McGriff should not have been kept out of the HOF because McGriff (493) has more home runs than Willie Stargel (475) AND more RBIs than POPS. McGriff has the same number of championships (1) and McGriffs career has been more impactful than Willie Stargel. Yet Stargel is in the HOF primarily because he played with the great Roberto Clemente. That is not McGriffs fault that he didnt play with anybody great. Well actually McGriff played with Smoltz, Maddox, Glavine and Chipper Jones (potentially 4 hall of famers). Fred McGriff should be enshrined in the HOF immediately.

Our photographer Curtis Compton caught Chipper outside the clubhouse a little while ago and here’s what Chipper had to say:

On retirement: “It’s obvious it’s something I’ve been thinking about, and that’s that.”

On his struggles: “Any time you struggle at the plate and have trouble producing, it’s frustrating. I’m just in the middle of everything and it hasn’t been happening. Hopefully, I really contribute to this team staying in first place. Hopefully, I will have a better second half of the season. I need to go through the proper channels. Once those have been taken care of, everyone’s questions will be answered.”

Asked if he wanted to retire with Bobby Cox: “No comment.”

[...] Bobby Cox and GM Frank Wren on Tuesday to discuss his future. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution initially reported he would then address the media and announce he was likely to retire following the 2010 [...]

To answer your question:

Brooks Robinson–2 WS Titles (1966 & 1970)
Chipper Jones–1 WS Title (1995)

World Series Appearances:
Brooks Robinson–4 (1966, 69, 70, 71)
Chipper Jones–3 (1995, 96, 99)

Post-Season Appearances:
Brooks Robinson–6 (66, 69, 70, 71, 73, 74)
Chipper Jones–11 (95, 96, 97, 98, 99, 2000, 01, 02, 03, 04, 05)

Considering that Brooks didn’t have divisions until the last 8 years of his career, not a lot of difference in post-season appearances.

Chipper sounds frustrated and confused, not good however you look at it. Hopefully he will have his meeting with Frank and Bobby and figure out whats gonna work best for him and the team. They just need to come up with some kinda plan that they are all happy with a stick with it. I think they should go ahead and change his lineup spot, maybe get him somewhere where theirs a little less pressure than the three hole and see what happens. McClouth struggles very comfortably in the 8th hole, maybe Chipper should try to hit their.

Yes, I think that’s the mark of winning organizations to just fire a coach, especially one that the players respect, and that is close to the manager, while the team is on a surge and in first place. George Steinbrenner notwithstanding, not many organizations who do well operate this way, and in King George’s case, his money trumped his temper, and one could argue that they should have won more often than they did with the resources they had.

they signed hampton to a steal of a contract with the marlins paying all of his salary for the first 2 or 3 years and then the contract was backloaded to pay hampton a lot of money in the end. he got hurt, but that doesnt mean the braves didnt have to pay him. its called a guarantee contract. if he doesnt get hurt its one of the greatest contract signings in history because hampton was a cy young type pitcher and the marlins paid us to take him from them.

and i highly doubt chipper gets even close to all of the $28 million. he’s given the braves their money back plenty of times and there’s no reason to think he wouldnt do it again if he doesnt think he’s earned it.

“We talked to Chipper today,” Cox said. “The best I can say is he’s planning on retiring after this year, but we won’t know until he tells you guys.”

That was the quote earlier. Now the quote is a lot different. What happened?

Chipper has to retire. When Griffey retired a few weeks ago did anyone really think he had anything in the tank anymore? NO! I just shrugged my shoulders about Griffey. Yeah he was great and always will be remembered as a great player, but the key word for now is *was*…he just waited too long to retire. I’m not saying I’d shrug my shoulders at Chipper retiring, but this is his last chance to do so with at least some kind of admirable respect. I’ll miss him when he’s not hugging 3rd anymore, but it may be time to give the Braves organization a definite answer and let them have a game plan way before the offseason gets here.

Chip can’t “announce” until he works out a settlement. If he retires straight up he leaves 20 million on the table. The Braves will probably give him half of that to just call it quits now. They’ll do it in the form of a multi-year “special adviser” contract. Everybody wins.

I think Glaus would be better at first next year. Why risk the money on a shoulder that may not hold up making that many throws across the diamond? he has been the first baseman we have been needing for a few years. We could bring in whomever will play it from the minors halfway through next season and let them work their way into the job. I think Infante/Conrad would be a good platoon at third unless we get a good young third baseman during the offseason.
As for Chipper….*SIGH*….I have seen Murphy retire, Maddux, Glavine and Smoltz. It wouldn’t last forever but you never really are prepared for the day when the STAR retires. I admit to having booed him after his first big contract and he stunk it up in the playoffs and cost us the series. I’ve cheered more than booed for Chipper and he is definately a rarity in this day—A professional who won’t just sit on the team for the money.
Braves fans everywhere will miss you Larry!

The retards on here are unreal. WHO CARES IF HE DIDN’T SIGN A 5 YEAR OLDS BASEBALL!!! Do you know how impossible it is to sign every persons request for a sig when you are Chipper Jones??! I personally don’t care what the man does in his personal life, he killed it on the field and helped my team win 14 consecutive titles. You are the same idiots that go to 3 games a year and complain to the usher that I am being too loud cheering for my team. Please if you are going to be such a bunch of whinny little girls, don’t bother supporting the Braves. You are the reason that other teams have reason to come at us real fans, please go hop on the bandwagon of another sport. I’m going to talkingchop, you guys are the lamest bunch of wannabe fans I’ve ever seen.

P.S. Rob – Yes, your comments undoubtedly solidify your status as an idiot bro.

Reality Check

This decision, as hard as I know it is for Chipper, is absolutely the correct one. He’s an all-time great, but his greatness in terms of on-the-field performance has faded rather sharply the last 2 seasons. It’s never been a question of desire. It’s all about being 38 years old and having a body that bears the scars of a fifteen-year Hall-of-Fame career. He’s worn out. He has nothing left to prove. He can walk away knowing that he gave it all he had for a decade and a half. This is an unselfish move, and one that may help cement the Braves’ standing as an elite team within the division for years to come. The money they’ll save can be used to re-sign Glaus or make any number of upgrades. I salute you, Chipper, on a fantastic career and for making another sacrifice for the betterment of your team. You will be missed on the field. But I have a sneaking suspicion we’ll see you around next year. You’ll be a great hitting coach.

Thanks for everything, Chipper! Cooperstown is waiting for you!

Chipper is definitely going to be in the Hall of Fame…. he is just physically worn out. He went straight to the pros without a stay in the minors and that is a lot of years on the road. I think if you are 20 and have no Braves memories without Chipper or Bobby, you should try and remember when you were FIVE, the Braves won a World Series with DAVID JUSTICE, TOM GLAVINE and JOHN SMOLTZ as main heroes. I love what Chipper has done for the Braves, but if they can make it without thse guys, they will do OK without Chipper and Bobby.

As for the ludicours idea of moving Chipper to batting coach and Pendleton to bench coach… WTF??? Chipper is considering retirement MAINLY because HE’S NOT HITTING!!! What, exactly, would he tell the Braves’ hitters, who are all hitting better than he is?

28 million $ seems like a superhuman’s paycheck.
He’s putting out 50% of the production at the plate, that he was giving when he signed that superhuman contract.
And his ability to field his position is all but gone, unless they hit a ball directly where he is standing.
He WAS leaning over and pointing his glove at the ground balls hit within a couple of feet of him, after they were ten feet past him.
Last night he wasn’t even making the effort to do that. He didn’t even run over to the stands to catch a catchable foul ball last night.

Everybody is talking about Chipper leaving 20Million on the table and retiring. What about Kensheen Kawakami retiring. The guy is 0-9 and winless in a Braves uniform this year. What if he goes 0-495 for his career. I think Kensheen should retire immeidately and stop taking a spot in the rotation thats costing the Braves dearly. What about promoting Jergens to the starting rotation and moving Kawakami to the bullpen to work his way back into the rotation. Just a thought.

I think Chipper should just “play it cool” until the end of the season. Continue to work extremely hard and try and get back into all-star form. My question is this. Why should Chipper retire immediately when the Braves are in FIRST PLACE and in CONTENTION. It makes no sense. Think about this. The Braves are skating through the division with Chipper slumping. In spite of Chipper playing pathetically, the Braves are still building a cushion in first place. When Chipper starts to play well the Braves will build a 20-games lead in the division. Also, what if the Braves win the world series this year, would that be fair to Chipper to sit home and watch it on tv when he could be playing in it. Let Chipper be Chipper and wait until the dust settles and the smoke clears on the season. Wait till the world series champion has been crowned. Then Chipper will decide on his future plans. The Brave may be world series winners and chipper may want to come back for the Braves to repeat as champions. All of that is possible.
