Medlin MUST remain in the rotation. Hell, once we get JJ back, we’re back to that wonderful problem of having six starters again.

Just saw the McCann play at the plate on Baseball Tonight.

The commentators’ take was what a great slide and reach around the tag – and what a great backup play by the pitcher. Almost implying that McCann couldn’t have been expecting that great of a throw.

Braves Paisan – no problem, since KK is no excuse for a starter. So technically we will be back to four legit starters – and one extremely overpaid long relief man.

Saito has left hamstring pull, but they’re not sure how serious. He’ll try to avoid DL, but if it’s not better in a few days they’ll probably DL him. He wants to avoid DL, obviously, but said he also wants to make sure he doesn’t burden team by forcing them to go short-handed for long if he’s not going to be able to recover soon.

He was hobbling badly in clubhouse after getting treatment for about a half-hour. Said he felt it on the last two pitches, thought he could keep pitching after it tightened on one pitch, but after it worsened on next one he knew he had to come out.

Venters got a one-pitch save, and Cox called him “Vulture” Venters afterward, teasing.

Don't look now...

I’ve got like 97 things:

First, I truly appreciate all the pre-game posts the last few days. Thank you, all. Without the haters (those who don’t post when the boys’re winnin’), y’all really shine.

P-Dub, and others who’ve touted Meds v. JJ: I thought y’all were short-bussers, comparing Meds to JJ. on stats alone. And, while I love me some JJ, clearly Meds has it in ‘im… I was wrong people; do what you do.

And, did you folks catch that N8-like McFann post? Good stuff…

And, we need to add Chip-Caray-mentions-the-Cubs to the Bingo card. Free space, almost. Just sayin’.

Illini, I agree, It isn’t that KK has been horrible, but he just doesn’t seem to be able to nail a game down. I don’t if it is nerves or something else, but he finds a way to lose. To the pen with him.

So here’s the simple math. Braves are 32-22. Many said they weren’t as bad as the team that lost 9 in a row. Some have said they’re not as good as the team that has now won 9 in a row. So what does that leave?

A team that’s gone 23-13 in the other 36 games. Time to believe people. This team isn’t going anywhere.

Season is officially 1/3 of the way done and Braves are playing .592 baseball and have a 3 game lead on the Phillies. Not bad.

BOBBY COX
on Saito: “He pulled a hamstring, and I don’t know how long. No [DL], not yet. We’ll give a pitcher a few days. He was going to have to rest tomorrow anyway, probably.

“I don’t know yet [if complete pull]. He felt it. For him to come out of the game – he’s tough.
Cox smiled and added: “Jonny ‘The Vulture’ Venters, one-pitch save.”

Does it take anything away from win, the concern for Saito? “Yeah. Any time you lose a guy like that … this guy is huge for us.”

“Medlen is the guy we’ve got to talk about. He was just outstanding. The eighth inning was kind of a crazy inning for him – one off the end of the bat by third [base], a two-hopper, and where was the other one? Another ball we couldn’t make a play on in the infield.

“He gave up one line drive. And Ethier hit the other ones, one to left and one to right. Two balls hit hard all night. I thought he was outstanding.

“And Moylan did his job. He got the ground ball. It wasn’t at anybody. He got another ground ball that we could only get one on. O’Flaherty got a tough out.”

More on Medlen: “He had a great night. He’s had a great night every time he’s started this year…. “He’s got three above-average pitches – curveball, change-up and fastball. He used them all. The change-up was great. He’s not afraid of anything.”

On Jason Heyward’s errant throw:
“I don’t know if the grass was wet or what. I’ve never seen him throw a ball [like that], ever.”

KRIS MEDLEN

How many family/friends here? “I didn’t have too many. My parents are driving from Texas [his parents live in the Lone Star State now, moved several years back from California]. They’re going to be here Saturday. I know my cousin brought his whole high-school baseball team. I had my old high-school baseball coaches, but not too many [others].”

Was that your best start? “Yeah, like execution-wise, me and Mac were on the same page the entire game. I felt something in the bullpen when I was warming up, something with my alignment. I was staying behind my curveball a lot better today. I thought that pitch was big for me, because my last few starts it’s just been fastball-changeup. Just gives me another weapon to use. I got a couple of strikeouts with it. Just tried to hit my spots. The defense played great behind me. It was awesome.”

“I just tried to come in there with my fastball, because you can’t throw a change-up the entire time without the fastball. I located real well, worked in and out. It’s a tough lineup, but we seemed to get through.”

First time all your pitches really working at once? “This year, yeah. I thought the three pitches combined were the best they’ve been the entire year.”

Nice homecoming? “Yeah, it’s great to be back. I grew up wanting to play for the Dodgers. It’s cool to come back and win a game against them.”

On his hit: “I ambushed him a little bit. There was a guy on third and I tried to get him in. It ended up being a big hit, because we needed [that fourth run].”

On starting vs. relieving: “I do miss the bullpen. I miss that, ‘Hey, get up and go,’ because that’s the kind of guy I am. I’m just energetic and can’t sit still most of the time. That role fits me well. But starting just kind of calms me down and makes me focus on every pitch. It’s more of a marathon, and it’s worked out for me so far.”

on the eighth inning: “I wasn’t tired at all. Tough play that O [Infante] made on the infield single, and then the broken bat by DeWitt, I thought the bat was the ball. I watched film of it, too. It broke and he threw it, and I turned. The ball was, like, 10 feet away from me; it could have been an easy out.

“But it’s huge getting the bullpen in the game. Moylo [Moylan] gave up a base hit but still got a big out, and then O [O'Flaherty] came in and got a huge strikeout.”

On O’Flaherty strikeout of Ethier: It’s in the back of your head because [Ethier] has done it so many times. He’s a great hitter. O made a great pitch.”

Moe, I think the only stuff I’ve read on the Manhatten Project is Richard Rhodes’ Making of the Atom Bomb, and the books on Richard Feynmann. Oh yeah, and a recent bio of Oppenheimer. Amazing collection of geniuses there. And yet, my understanding is that to a large degree the development of the bomb was more of an engineering problem than anything else.

As long as we got the late night crowd here, I reiterate the question. Willie said he could steals signs from first and third base by watching the twitching of the muscles in the catcher’s forearm. Is this humanly possible? And if not, does that mean Willie was an ALIEN!

Moe Berg

June 4th, 2010
2:58 am

uga-brave–I trust you. Which drillers do you have in mind? I guess my fear has been the possible ending of off-shore drilling–at least new permits.

I have been studying my forearm since I read Willie’s claim, and have deduced that too much forearm hair (a curse of my people) is a deterrent. I think maybe the wiggling of all the fingers for a change-up can be discerned from the rapid movement of several muscles. But identifying one finger from two from over 90 feet away is simply not possible from the forearm muscle movement alone.

“Of course I’d like to avoid the DL, but if I become a burden on the team, I have no choice. That’s something that I have to discuss with the trainers and coaches.”

Felt it on one pitch?

BRIAN McCANN
on Medlen: “He’s been pitching great all year long. I mean, this wasn’t something that he did where we’re like, ‘Oh, I can’t believe he did that.’ He’s been doing this since he’s been up here.

“He had all his pitches working tonight. Location was great. He’s a competitor. He takes the mound and he expects to do that. That’s half the battle up here at the big-league level.”

On the winning surge: “Pitching has carried us, andwe’ve been swinging the bats [for a while now]. It’s been a great mix for us.

On Glaus: He’s been unbelievable. I mean, he has been unbelievable hitting in the middle of the order for us. He’s been everything we could ask for. And he’s been great over at first base, too. He’s picked up that position so quick.

“He’s playing like an All-Star. He’s been an All-Star [in the past]. He’s done it all.”

More on the pitching:
“That’s the reason we have a streak. That’s the reason we’re in first place. Now we’re hitting and everything. We’ve been swinging the bats really well the last three weeks, last month. We’re playing good baseball.”

On Saito: “He’s been a big part of our success. Hopefully it’s nothing serious and he can get back sooner than later.

“He tried to stick it out, but he knew it was a one-run game and if he didn’t feel conviction throwing a pitch, the best thing that could happen was for him to come out of the game.”

Someone asked me yesterday how many game-winning runs McLouth has scored this year. By my count it’s three:

1. His own walk-off HR against Philly in April
2. Scored on Chipper’s RBI single in the bottom of the 8th last weekend
3. Scored on Infante’s RBI single in the bottom of the 8th on Wednesday

McLouth also had a huge hit in the 7-run 9th inning against the Reds, and he scored on the grand slam, but technically he wasn’t the winning run…Conrad was.

Enjoyed the link to the Warren Zevon .. Letterman show .. sandwich reference. I remember that show. Speaking of sandwiches … you recently mentioned Farm Burger in the Atlanta area .. and you are now in the land of In-N-Out-Burger. Could you shed some light on those chains .. for those of us who haven’t experience dining at either of those establishments … maybe a compare/contrast? Also, If you had three burger places in a row .. near you house .. Farm Burger .. In-N-Out .. and 5 Guys .. would you have a favorite .. or would each place win out on certain occasions? Thanks for any info.

Bruce Chen is starting tonight for the Royals. I had no idea he was still in baseball. It’s actually his second start of the season.

Brian: He’s been pitching the last three years in Winter ball in Puerto Rico…I saw him last yr on my Visit to the Island and he was pitching great.
