Ha, I’ve never watched the Greg Maddux IMOW on FSS. I just caught the part where he and Chipper collided on a pop up and Chipper said Maddux started dropping f-bombs galore.
Bobby’s feedback to McLouth today after Nate’s BP is all well and good. Bobby’s patience with several other players in the lineup has been rewarded. That said, why Bobby continues to play McLouth in CF speaks to a less than HOF thought process.
Even when things go right, there is still much to be upset with Bobby about. Didn’t Melky Cabrera play CF for the Yankees? Hasn’t Hinske played a serviceable LF as of late? Can’t McLouth sit on a bench or go to Gwinnett for a couple of weeks until he finds himself?
Honestly, Bobby, even when you’re seemingly right, you still find a way to make yourself look downright dumb. To seize the moment RIGHT NOW and go on a strong run, all eight positional pistons need to be firing in synch.
Nate McLouth is a dropped piston that will screw up a suddenly high-performance engine capable of going far.
Just got home from work. Missed the game but will watch it at MLB.com later. can’t believe we are finally back in 1st place. The last time we were in first place this late in the season was 5 years ago. That’s a long time boys and girls. And everyone is doing their job, with the exception of McLouth. makes ya wanna go “HELL YEAH!!!!”
Although I read the blog every day, I seldom post. So, of course, having read many posts I think I’ve been able to accurately determine the persona of many of the people who post regularly. “Didn’t Melky Cabrera play CF for the Yankees? Hasn’t Hinske played a serviceable LF as of late? Can’t McLouth sit on a bench or go to Gwinnett for a couple of weeks until he finds himself?”
People McLouth’s value to the team is playing CF. Although Melky plays a good CF, Nate will turn many more possible doubles and triples into outs than Melky will. I do agree that he could stand to set against tough lefties i.e. Hamels tomorrow. But you had better get used to the idea of him being in the line up most nights. He scores runs by saving runs.
Honestly, Bobby, even when you’re seemingly right, you still find a way to make yourself look downright dumb. To seize the moment RIGHT NOW and go on a strong run, all eight positional pistons need to be firing in synch.
What do you call 21 and 8… 6 straight wins……..a mediocre run?
“What, we need another 20-inning game and then use him after we’ve used all our pitchers and if a position player’s sinker isn’t biting?” the player said. -From that Mets article in reference to Oli Perez.
BBM or whoever…… Mc Louth is STRUGGLING, he is BEHIND way TOO MUCH in the count. You AND Coxie don’t get it. HE SHOULD NOT START AGAINST A LEFT HANDER, PERIOD.
TexasBrave: McLouth’s value was not only as a CF, but as a leadoff or 2-hole hitter. Unusual circumstances allowed us to find Heyward as a #2 and the torrid Prado as our leadoff guy. If you think for even one moment that McLouth is that much better a CF than Cabrera, then you seem to have an over-inflated sense of McLouth’s abilities.
I’ve got no problem with running McLouth out there to chase balls down for our pitchers. As long as the rest of the lineup is doing its job we can afford for him to continue working things out in the lineup. He can’t stay this bad forever, right?
TexasBrave: If all McLouth is needed for is to play an exceptional centerfield, then he is lacking there also. Fact is that Schafer is well beyond McLouth defensively. Wren should bring him up and turn him loose, whether he hits the ball or not. At any rate, he wouldn’t hit any worse than McLouth has done. Sooner or later, we are gonna need for our centerfielder to contribute offensively.
Schafer wasn’t exactly the next coming of Andruw Jones out there in CF from what I remember. He has the raw skills for sure. If McLouth keeps this up then something will give. I just hope it isn’t Melky as everyday CF.
Great day to be a Braves fan…I had tickets to the game today but had to work missed out on the Braves beating the Phillies live…but good to see a team win:)
N8,
I wonder why Joe (who loves to point out Esco’s mental breakdowns) didn’t single out the slow jog out of the batters box on that single (thrown out at 2nd base play)…but that slow start and the early slide cost him the double there. still, an encouraging sign that he’s had several mutli hit games as of late. This team needs him to be his old self.
Glad to see Chipper show that he still does have the occasional ability to hit a HR, something required of a number 3 hitter in any LINEUP.
McLouth is just lost right now…bad mechanics, bad plate discipline, always seems to be 0-2 up there…but I still believe he can “come out of it” at some point. He hasn’t always been this bad. He’s popping up a lot of pitches middle of the plate and away…bad sign…makes you wonder how TP is working with him to help him hit the ball up the middle and to the off-field, b/c Nate is not swinging like it, he’s a dead pull hitter right now.
People clamoring for McCutchen…just stop. the Pirates are not going to be trading their best position player anytime soon, esp. when he can be had for cheap for the next several years.
Ideally, if McLouth continues to struggle, and Matt Diaz can come back strong, you just play Diaz/Hinske (platoon in LF) and Melky ini CF (since he’s been hitting as of late). No need to play Blanco (except for defensive replacement).
Braves who should be on the All Star team right now…(I’ve voted), please vote…Prado, Heyward, Hudson…outside shot still to make the game is McCann (McFann, don’t lose hope )
Good deal that the Braves are missing Doc and the ancient one (who seems to give them trouble)…they’ve been hitting Hamels the last few starts, hope the trend continues tomorrow.
Go Braves, first place Braves…should be interesting to listen to Kincade on 680thefan tomorrow and his Phillies are sucking it right now…
MiaBchBravesFan – Then you don’t watch much baseball, because Melky in CF is a step down to Nate. Also Nate has never been a true leadoff hitter. Just look at his career OBP. McLouth batted leadoff out of necessity and I am glad that he is no longer in that position.
Bobby said for years that Andruw saved a run a game defensively. Not true. He saved a run every series, perhaps, depending on the circumstances.
Nate’s defense is above average, but he isn’t superman out there. He hasn’t saved any runs this series—no diving catches, no gappers he has run down that a slower outfielder wouldn’t catch up to.
What he did do, was leave the bases loaded TWICE yesterday and scores of other runners on base over the past month. He has cost us more runs than he has saved us.
Eric from MO: as a matter of fact, yes I was. Score one for patience and good fortune after a recent history of mediocre signings gone bad. I am a Braves’ fan first, with impatience a very close second.
Can’t McLouth sit on a bench or go to Gwinnett for a couple of weeks until he finds himself?
how in the hell is he gonna find himself on the bench? he is a much better defensive CFer than Melky and in case you missed it-we are winning regularly, there were 5 or 6 other guys hitting that poorly for a while who turned it around with regular play. Nate has a decent sample size of productive hitting, if he is healthy there is no reason that he won’t come around.Y’all bytch about the most meaningless things during the best winning streak they have had in years. Grow up
Jerald Holcombe – While I agree that Schafer would play a better CF than McLouth, I would much rather have Jordan working things out in the minors. And while the team is doing well offensively now there is no reason to bring up or replace somebody making millions more who is not crushing your team offensively like Jeff and KJ were last year.
I think you guys have to realize that a trade is going to have to happen before Nate gets totally unseated from his CF position.
ray k. and at the same time the Braves still one the game. Would it have been great for him to come through, yes absolutely, but he didn’t and the team still found a way to win without him hitting. Again I say this is one person in the line up who is not hitting in a lineup full of others that are getting it done. Is Nate the answer to the Braves future in CF, NO. But right now with Schafer working on getting strength back in his wrist, he is. Melky is not the better CF, but should get more starts than he does against left handed starting pitchers.
Danga: You are right in that Schafer was, and is not, the second coming of Andruw Jones. But then again, who is? But I’ll tell you this with all sincerity, McLouth is not the second coming of Schafer either, and that is saying something considering the kid has played at the major league level for 50 games and had 127 POs with 4 assists and 1.000 fielding pct. McLouth on the other hand before today played in 46 games with 104 POs and one assist and 1 error and a fielding pct of .991. Truthfully, I can’t remember the one assist he had and have a hard time believing he threw anyone out. Players take the extra base with McLouth, but Schafer has a better gun, hands down. McLouth has a leftfielder’s arm. I am a big fan of what I think Schafer can do on this level, and the last thing I wanna do is hurt the kid’s chance to come up and not stay here. But, I remember when Andruw was young and the way he struggled and Bobby kept saying that Andruw was gonna stay in centerfield whether he hit or not because he was saving the team runs defensively. That’s what I say should be done with Schafer.
Did people really just say Schafer is better defensively than McLouth? How short is your all’s memory? How many games did Schafer overrun balls instead of playing them off the wall? Turning singles into doubles and doubles into triples. Leave Schafer in the minors so he can work on his game for now.
Would anyone be willing to trade Kris Medlen and Nate McLouth for Chris Young of the Diamondbacks…I know he strikes out a lot, but he’s good in CF and has some pop and hits righthanded…They need pitching and I would rather send KK but don’t know if that would work out unless we gave up a suspect like Venters with it….
I hear ya Jerald, and I don’t disagree completely. But after the injury and everything Schafer has been through the last couple of years I just assume he polish his game a bit more in Gwinnett.
Schafer is a much better defender than McNate no matter the troubles he had. he is faster and has a stronger more accurate arm. In the minors he took as good a route to most balls as Nate does. They are not going to bring him up until he starts showing some progress as a hitter again though no matter how much some of y’all whine.
Jerald Holcombe – I agree with everything you said except for the last sentence. Andrew was not struggling because of injury, whereas Jordan is still building strength in his wrist. Bring Jordan up now and he will press and will not get any better this season trying to hit major league pitching. Leave him down until his strength is back and has confidence in his hitting. Again it is going to take a trade of either Nate, Melky or Diaz to get Schafer back up and not before.
Oh and Eric, it was clear Jordan was trying to do too much. He got that out of his system after a couple of series.
Just asking…we’re stuck with Nate for the new couple of years at the rate he’s going…Would you trade KK and Nate or Melky for him….He’s a lot like Mike Cameron, a 7 hole hitter with some pop and he can go get them in CF
TexasBrave: I think you guys have to realize that a trade is going to have to happen before Nate gets totally unseated from his CF position.
That I’m not buying. McLouth can ride the pine and be a late inning defensive replacement, or pinch runner. And after the season, they can try to trade him or just release him all together. Doesn’t matter to me as long as he isn’t in this lineup and leaving runners on base like has. In just the last 4 games, he has left 12 runners on base. That is just wrong.
I’m still here and not awaiting moderation on anything. Wasn’t awaiting it yesterday, either. Thing is you don’t have the brains to realize that those who write the blog know that I didn’t post those garbage posts.

Julio Teheran is pitching yet another great game for MB. Through 6 innings he’s allowed 0 runs, 3 hits, 9K’s & 0 walks. His ERA is down to 0.49.
At this rate the kid may follow a Tommy Hanson like arrival in Atlanta next season.

ray k. and at the same time the Braves still one the game.

They are not going to bring him up until he starts showing some progress as a hitter again though no matter how much some of y’all whine.

that would be the Chris Young who hits 223/300/420 away from the hitter’s haven in Arizona? Isn’t that a bit steep for a 720 hitter?
