McCann will return to lineup Monday

Braves catcher Brian McCann was out of the starting lineup for the fourth straight game Sunday in the series finale against Pittsburgh. However, manager Bobby Cox said McCann would be back behind the plate on Monday when Atlanta opens a three-game series against Philadelphia.

“He could have played [Saturday], he could have played [Sunday],” Cox said. “This is the smart thing to do.”

McCann suffered a strained right quadriceps last week against Florida. Also out of the starting lineup on Sunday was Chipper Jones. Omar Infante replaced Jones at third base.

“I gave him a day off,” Cox said. “Plus, Infante has got to get in there.”

Infanted batted second and Jason Heyward moved down to hit third.

McCann and Jones didn’t stay on the bench. Both had key at-bats in the eighth inning when the Braves broke open a 2-2 game. McCann drew a one-out walk and Jones, batting for Infante, delivered the game-winning hit – a two-out bloop single to left field to score Nate McLouth. Heyward followed with a two-run triple.

“When you rest people, you have a lot of weapons on the bench,” Cox said after the game. “It could be in the fifth or sixth inning. A lot of people don’t look at it that way. I’ve always talked to other managers about resting guys. I tell them what a plus it can be to give a guy a little bit of a rest and, if you need them, you have all these weapons sitting on the bench ready to go.”

I am glad Infante is getting to play. He was hitting so well when Escober returned to the lineup. Escobar is a better defender but has hurt the Braves at the plate. Is it possible that Infante will replace Escobar soon?

Another question … It is convenient for Cox to state that McCann’s days off are to rest his quad. Ross has started now three days in a row against lefties. Two of those days McCann said he could have played. Is this the start of a potential platoon situation?

Buster Olney just called the Braves the best NL team of May. Also said Manbeast (Heyward) is on pace for 35 HR 126 RBI. Wow, 20 Dude. 20.

Ross deserves more than 1 out of every 5 starts even after McCann gets his groove back.

When McCann’s in his grove, there’s no better hitting catcher in the NL.

Is something wrong with Hinske. I mean I know that McClouth is really hitting so much better than him right now. But I think that the Big H might be just a little better.

McCann is the best catcher in the National League. I dont think bobby will be platooning. Ross is a great backup. But he is not McCann. He is not going that good right now, but hes a hitter. And hitters will hit.

Don’t you guys think that with the way McClouth is hitting that Melky should be in CF and Hitski should be in LF?

Escobar has hit well the past three games and looks to be getting back to his old hitting self from last year. Infante won`t be replacing him anytime soon unless Escobar pulls another one of his childish tantrums that forces Cox to deal with him. Don`t forget that Diaz was a .300 hitting outfielder before this year and the surgery he had to do. He could be the answer in left with Hinske back to covering for LF and 1st base. Melky will surely play more center when and if Diaz is hitting well. Then schafer will come be the regular cneterfielder, Mclouth will go to AAA and Melky will spell LF and CF. Infante will spell 3rd, short, and 2nd.
Got to feel terrible for Kawakami today.

1. Omar Infante will not replace Escobar in the line-up, now or anytime in the future. You can just put that to rest already.
2. McCann will not be platooning.
3. The Braves are now the run-scoring-est team in the east.

Hinske’s reduced PT has me puzzled, too. He’s a switch hitter and he was swinging the bat well when no one else beside Heyward was. Now that Glaus is finally doing what a cleanup hitter should, having Hinske in the 5 hole when McCann’s out makes much more sense. McClouth is a great glove but Melky should be in center batting 8th. Nate needs to regroup. If we had a real hitting coach maybe that would help.

Escobar will play when healthy, end of that discussion, he’s too talented and his stick will come around. I love Infante but he’s not a run producer. Don’t forget what Escobar’s career avg with men on base is. Agree only time to bench him is when he takes a play off, loafs, etc.

Who the heck suggested a catching platoon? Bobby wanted the best catcher in the National League rested and healthy for the Phillies. That’s all. McCann WILL hit.

The real issue is – when is Bobby going to put loyalty aside and make the best move possible for this team: put Chipper in the 2 hole and bat Heyward 3rd. Chipper’s lack of power at this stage of his career, experience, bat control and good OBP make him a perfect 2 hitter. And your best hitter hits 3rd in any league. Period.

Everyone get on MLB.com and load up the All-Star votes for Heyward. No other Brave has a chance to start. Prado and Hudson will get picked by Charlie Manuel. Maybe McCann will get picked by Manuel, too, if he tears up the Phillies this week.

Let’s get first place this week!!! We miss Halliday, there is no excuse!! Not with our pitching!! And cut down the men LOB, boys, Philly will take advantage of that! Their bats won’t be quiet that much longer.

BALONEY SUGAR COAT IT ALL YOUI WANT THE PHILLIES WILL TAKE CARE OF BUSINESS AGAINST THE BRAVES THEN THEY GO TO LA FOR 4 ,ARIZONA FOR 4 ,AND MINNESOTA FOR 3, FIRST PLACE IS ONLY IN YR IMAGINATION THIS TODAY ON MEMORIAL DAY IS THE START OF THE FINAL DOWNFALL OF 2010.

[...] Brian McCann to return to lineup for Monday’s series opener against the Phillies. It was first thought that he would only miss the finale in Florida with that tweaked quad muscle. I think Bobby Cox made a wise decision by sitting him as much as he did as you don’t want something nagging to turn into something that is serious. Plus with all of the wet weather that has been around the stadium it would have just made things more dangerous. McCann did get a couple of pinch hit appearances and should be ready to go for the big series with the Phillies. [...]

I was thinking the same thing the other day, so I did look it up…they were averaging 5.44 runs a game, before and are averaging 3.35 runs per game since….might have been something there

No need for binoculars at the Ted. Just walk Heyward and pitch to the rest of the single hitters. McClouth and Escobar are automatic outs, no problem. Philies take 2 of 3 and never look back.

I’m tired of reading excuses on here about the hitting coach being the reason McLouth is struggling? Come up with something more reasonable? The knowledgeable fan knows that the hitting coach can’t hit for the player. Come on man.

Even John Smoltz has said it’s unfair to blame a hitting coach for a player not hitting (ie: McLouth). I mean Prado is killing the ball, Heyward is killing the ball, Glaus is killing the ball. I mean, doesn’t TP have something to do with their success? He has too if he’s blamed for a players failure (McLouth).

Rumor is that MLB set up security binocular detector walkthroughs at the Phillies entrance into the Ted this morning. Everything was fine, but security found two binocular sets 15 minutes later in the trashcans outside their entrance!
