McCann questionable for Thursday with quad strain

Miami – Brian McCann strained his right quadriceps muscle running the bases in the fourth inning Wednesday night and is questionable for Thursday’s series finale against the Marlins.

McCann tweaked the quadriceps running between first and second on Yunel Escobar’s lineout to center in the fourth. McCann played for three more innings but left the game after his run-scoring single in the seventh inning, worried he might aggravate it further.

“It’s a six-to-seven week thing if you tear so I’m going to be careful with it,” McCann said after the game. “I don’t want to pull it, so I’m going to hope to go. I’m going to show up tomorrow and hope to go.”

Troy Glaus also left the game in the seventh inning. Manager Bobby Cox said he’s been nursing a sore foot.

“I try to give him a breather as much as I can,” Cox said. “I hate to take him out because he’s turned into a real good defensive first baseman.”

Which foot is bothering Glaus?

Are the rumors that I’ve signed with the Braves true? If so, could I possibly make it to the majors this summer? Thanks. I’ll hang up and listen.

That’s why the players love Bobby; he puffs them up so much. Remember in the late nineties when he said Chipper was as good defensively as Brooks Robinson? So good they brought in Vinny Castilla and moved Chipper to left. Don’t think that ever happened to Brooks

I may be batting leadoff for the Braves later this summer. What do you think about that, Bob in SF?

Just an idea but maybe Bobby can rest McLouth tomorrow night and play Melke or Blanco in center, Hinske in left, J Hey in right. Or, if Glaus can’t go, play Hinske at 1B, Blanco in CF, and Melke in LF. Melke is hitting a little better. McLouse is not.

if it wasn’t for Diaz injuries & Shafer not being ready, both Nate & Melky belong in Gwinnett, neither are Major league caliber hitters right now.

If it wasn’t for him being our best starter right now, I’d think about putting Huddy in the OF right now. He played OF when he wasn’t pitching back at Auburn, & was a really good hitter. If he worked at it, he could be a pretty good major league hitter, he’s definitely a good hitter for a pitcher.

The bad news first: Is it me or does Chipper cringe every time he swings and misses. McLouth looks like he weighs 130lbs. On Pitt he looked like 180-190. Yunel is a Hanley wanna be, not good. Glaus looks like Chipper in his early I’m getting old stages. The good: Pitching. The confused: Managing. This lineup is hard to manage though. Like fingers in a dike.

makes me discussed the unbaseball like talk coming from….what grade schoolers?? Certainly not adults. . Jones is hurting the club and Cox should drop him to seventh or eigth in lineup or play Infante and bench Chip.. Was great player but bvelieve his career is over. Will be surprised if he even hits 260 this yr , no power and limited range at third. To bad!!!!

Can’t say that I’m happy with Nate’s bat but the ground he is covering in the outfield should keep him on the roster. Batting 7 or 8 but still out there. His jump on the ball as it comes off the bat makes it look so easy but he has saved us several times.

That’s terrible news about McCann. While I think his hitting will eventually come around, he has REALLY improved his defense this season. Carroll, how many base runners has McCann thrown out this season? Is that a statistic you can look up?

Guess Who…
I’m still playing almost everyday…
I’m now in 86th in the NL in batting average…
I’m now tied for 108th in the NL in hits…
I’m now tied for 86th in the NL in runs scored…
I’m now tied for 100th in the NL in homeruns…
I’m now 79th in the NL in Slugging Percentage…
I’m now tied for 90th in the NL in RBIs… (Willie Harris has more RBIs than me in almost half the at bats…
I have only 11 extra base hits…

I’ll give you a hint…I hit 3rd day in and day out…obviously no matter what. Players say they have confidence in Chipper Jones at the plate…That’s the biggest load of BS I’ve heard in a while. The guy is terrible and he’s hurting the team hitting in that spot in the order. He is an automoatic out and he only hits when there are guys on base because Prado and Heyward are always on. Get a clue Cox, move him!!!!!! He’s the worse 3-hole hitter in the big leagues.. NO QUESTIONS ASKED! There isn’t even a comparison!

Did someone seriously say McCann’s defense has improved? LOL He is a terrible defensive catcher. He has way too many passed balls and wild pitches. He does a terrible job of sliding his body and blocking balls in the dirt. Way too often he gets lazy and reaches for wild pitches

I agree–his defense has shown a lot of improvement, especially in the pitch-blocking category (unfortunately they don’t have a stat for what gets blocked).

He’s 8-30 in catching guys stealing–good for 27%, which isn’t horrid. I think 30% is about what is considered “good”.

Vinny Castilla replaced Chipper at 3rd and no one questioned that. Now can we please move Chipper down in the line-up so we do not Blow this season? Is Bobby watching the games, or is his “LOYALTY” to Chipper Jones more important than the TEAM? And if Chipper Jones cared about the team, he would insist on being moved down in the line-up. How long is he willing to wait?

Troy Glaus is a very good defensive 1st baseman. Have you seen some of the balls chipper has thrown to glaus? off target, but the big guy can catch anything. hes made some great picks, especially since he was a 3rd baseman before. I hope brian and troy get better quick, but I’m very proud to know that our back up catcher is much much better than normal back up catchers.

[...] Brian McCann is highly questionable for Thursday night’s series finale against the Marlins. The Braves catcher tweaked the quad in the fourth inning and played through the seventh before being lifted for a pinch runner. Despite the hot streak that the Braves are on, they need to rest McCann as they don’t want that lingering injury to turn into something worse. McCann after a slow start is hitting .263 with 5 home runs and 18 rbi’s. [...]

I agree Dorothy. too bad they don’t have all the same fancy stats for managers as they do for players. Bobby Cox won 14 straight division titles and won the world series once! he had 3 hall of fame starting pitchers in the same starting rotation for a decade. he also had a hall of fame 3rd baseman. I think bobby is a very loyal manager but i cant wait for this season to be over so he will be gone. a perfect example of his pathetic managing is last night, when for some stupid reason he pitched moylan 2 innings and he threw 30 pitches. all this with a 5 run lead. that is inexcuseble. and he also have the weakest 3 hole hitter in the majors. who knows how game 1 of the series would have played out if chipper wouldn’t have grounded into a double play with 2 on and nobody out in the top of the first. bobby makes me sick

Glaus has started hitting the ball, so thats good, but a “real good” 1st baseman? Are you kidding me? If thats the case, the Statue of Liberty is a Gold Glove outfielder.

Also, no one asked, but why is Chipper still hitting 3rd.?.IMO Chipper should be hitting either 6th, or if he is so seemingly happy to be a singles hitter and one who walks twice a game, put him in the 2 hole. And Cabrera in the 6 hole???? Cabrera just needs to sit.. he sucks. Ill take Hinske out there over Cabrera regardless of who’s pitching ..he may be Glaus-like in the field but at least he can hit.

14 STRAIGHT division titles. No pro team in ANY major sport has done that. It could not have been done without Bobby Cox’s leadership. You fair weather fans make me sick. The Boston Red Sox went almost 80 years (if not more) without winning a World Series and their fans stayed loyal.Think about the talent they let get away… Is that the fault of Bobby Cox ? NO, blame UPPER management.

Players slump, Old Players slump longer and it looks worse. Chipper hit well last night. He’s proven that he’s going to hit. He’s never played all 162 and certainly needs more time off these days. Infante is a very good fill-in. Glaus is NOT, at this stage, a good 1b. The throw last night that got by him was a poor throw but a 1b’er should handle that hop easily enough. He WAS a good 3b and with work will become as good a 1b as he wishes to become. His bat came around and so will the glove. Yunel will hit again and his D is strong. Hinske is a D liability anywhere but at 1b, but is necessary in the OF for his bat right now, until Melky, Mclouth, Diaz come around. And they will.
McCann will hit too. Ross is as good a backup C as there is in the game right now.
Prado has become an unexpected gem. Heyward has been all that was billed and more. But kids slump just like all other players and his will be rough. It happens to ALL players. The pitching has been soooo reliable and has kept the team afloat thus far.
There is little help for what ails these Braves in the Minors. These Braves are proven vets that will figure it out. May not be playoff caliber though.
