Braves-Pirates game on Saturday will NOT be televised

It happens only once in a blue moon, but it’s happening this Saturday. The Braves game against the Pirates in Pittsburgh Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. will not be televised.

FOX network is experimenting with holding its Saturday games in prime time and is using this Saturday and June 26 for trial runs. That means the games not being televised by FOX that day cannot be held in that prime time window.

The Pirates elected not to move Saturday’s game to earlier in the day, and potentially hurt ticket sales at PNC Park. As a result, the Braves will not be on TV for the only time in 162 games this season.

Tristan –
I don’t think it’ll be on mlb.com tv. Fox has a deal with them where you can only watch their games on broadcast television. I may be wrong, but I think it’s part of their “pay your money and not see any of the games you care about; instead, enjoy our crap” clause.

People with MLB.tv and Extra innings will not get the game either since Fox has an exclusive deal for that time slot. Pretty bush league of the Pirates for not moving the game. Lord forbid we disrupt the plans of all 12,000 people that will actually show up to a Pirates game.

No, it’ll be done by the time of the MLB slot. But that’s assuming the game ends in regulation; extra time + penalty kicks would be another 40-50 minutes.

There’s one more week where they’re in a primetime slot, but I don’t think it has anything to do with their other programming.

The Pirates have a promotion that night with a Garrett Jones figurine. They will be expecting a large crowd and attendance wise they need all the help they can get. They aren’t going to change the gametime to afternoon and screw up thier own fanbase just to satisfy a bunch of Braves fan TV watchers. Any other team would do the same thing. Blame Fox if you want to complain.

KV, by large crowd do you mean the 16,000 that are showing up for Pirates games on average? I know I’m pumped for the Garrett Jones bobblehead give-away. Nothing like a figurine of a career minor leaguer in the midst of a couple of fluke months to get me out to the ballpark.

Seriously, Pittsburgh was worried that fewer people were going to show up to their game than the already dismal number that attend in the first place? It’s a SATURDAY, you’d think Pittsburgh residents would want to get in and out of the city before nightfall… thats when Ben Rothilsberger goes on the prowl.

Geez people…like KV said, it’s only 1 of 162. We’ll find a way to get over it.

If there’s anybody that might complain for one night it’s the folks over at MLB Network. Usually their Saturday Night programming is based on cut-in’s from the different regional outlets. Though I would assume since it is the League’s network that they are exempt from the National Exclusive rights that the big Fox has betweeen 7 and 10 pm Saturday.

As far as FOX’s decision to use this weekend for Saturday Primetime coverage, I wonder if any of that is based on the fact that Interleague play starts this weekend?

BTW, here in Western North Carolina along with Atlanta, we’ll be getting Mets and Yankees Saturday Night.

Andy

May 20th, 2010
10:45 am

Dan_in_NC

Yes, it’s only one game but if FOX gets good ratings for the game then they may make every Saturday game a night game and that means no night games can be televised on Saturday. Then we have a real problem.

Dan_in_NC

May 20th, 2010
10:53 am

Don’t agree Andy…as I said, I think Interleague play has a lot do to with using this weekend for their Primetime Coverage. They’ll definitely get good ratings with Yankees-Mets and Phils-Red Sox. But they won’t get that every weekend. Even if FOX wanted to to Primetime Saturday every week, they won’t carry all games, therefor you would see a lot more East and West coast Noon and 1pm starts.

You also got to remember that Saturday Baseball could also interfere with FOX’s NASCAR coverage. NASCAR is going to more and more Saturday Night races with each passing season.

The fundamental flaw is that the the contract allows FOX to change the scheduled time and still retain absolute broadcast exclusivity. MLB is granted certain immunities from anti-trust and MLB teams/owners receive tax payer money for their stadiums, so this isn’t a cut and dried case of business in America. Schedules are made and tickets are sold. If FOX wants to change the time for their “exclusive” broadcast after the fact, OK, but they should lose the right to prevent a local station from broadcasting a previously scheduled local market game if they do so.
