puzzled, I disagree with your comment about how hard DOB works compared to the players. While the players exert more physical energy, DOB works many more hours writing, blogging, interviewing, transcribing interviews, and traveling (the team flies a charter, he flies commercial). DOB also puts in many hours during the off-season providing us with hot stove information and covering other sporting events for the AJC. I’m a huge Braves fan and DOB’s job sounds very cool, but I wouldn’t trade places with him due to the long hours and travel obligations (especially since I am married with a small child).

Yeesh. You can put me in the camp of people who would not want DOB’s job …. at least not for longer than a week or two. I used to work the closing shift at a newspaper and those hours alone made it almost impossible to have a life with anyone other than my co-workers. And I’m just talking about working nights and weekends. I didn’t have to do any of the traveling and working on my days off that DOB does. Not saying he’s got the worst job in the world or anything, but I wouldn’t trade my 9-5 job that gets me home everyday in time to watch the game, and keeps me out of the office on weekends so I can fire up the grill and throw back a cold one.

Wambulance, Jeremy: You’ve got it wrong. I’m not complaining about my job at all. Love my job (if a few of you loved your own jobs, you’d probably not ask every single time — that’s every. single. time. — that I have an off day, whether I’m on “vacation” again. That’s silly.

I wasn’t complaining about my job, I was responding to commenters who can’t seem to resist asking someone who works 80-100 hours a week why they have a day off. That’s all. I’m not complaining about my job at all. I wouldn’t swap with many folks. Just pointing out the absurdity of calling it a vacation when, after someone works six long days in a row, then spends half a day flying, then the half the next day writing (but just not writing that days’s blog, God forbid) he’s then asked about being on “vacation” by, I’m suspecting, some who don’t work, uh, well, quite that many hours but have the weekend off. Every weekend.

And yes, I would’ve steered clear of today’s topic. Only because the responses, the nasty back-and-forth, is so entirely predictable. Sort of like the “vacation again?” response every day I’m off. Like when I cover every game on the 11-day trip next month to L.A. Arizona and Minnesota. Next day back, I’ll be off and one of Those Guys will say, “vacation?”

And if and when I respond, I’ll be told I’m cranky and should take a day off.

Since some continue to insist on talking politics, here’s my 2 cents worth.

- injecting politics into this blog SUCKS.

-This issue, and most, are not as simple as some seem to think. It actually has much less to do with immigration (leagle or otherwise), and more to do with human rights (a right which true Americans should hold dear, no matter thier politics). See 3:26 post by ASN for further explaination.

- I believe, and we all should believe in the 1st amendment. Civil Protesters have a right, even if you strongly disagree with them. We would not need a 1st amendment to protect popular views. To call these people names, and say that THEY should be deported, etc. is , in my view UNAMERICAN. That has nothing to do with how you feel about what they are saying.

LET US PLEASE NOW GET BACK TO BASEBALL.

I have been here for 5 years or so and have never said anything negative regarding this blog. However, today is weird. Bottom line I want to get at here is instead of arguing with nobody or that one idiot who said “vacation”, why don’t you let us know what happened with Jurrjens MRI? If he had one yet or when it is scheduled. He is ATL’s best pitcher so that is very important news.

Secondly, other than explaining yourself to and idiot, what happens if the Phillies get busted a 2nd time this year? What are the consequences they would suffer? (I am very interested in this being they are the team ATL needs to beat back down and their cheating is pathetic and punishment is in order).

Finally, for all of you political idiots, take it somewhere else. The law is the law. No it doesn’t belong at Turner Field. What ya gonna do? I have a suggestion take your BS somewhere else away from here. I’m sure there is 100+ venues for that. This isn’t one of ‘em.

CR: The bigger issue is where to put Chipper if not batting third. Third should be Heyward’s spot; he’s earned it through performance and a way better slugging percentage. Chipper is not in good health and his OBP is almost mitigated by his total lack of anything remotely called quickness or speed.

In light of McCann’s recent struggles, a stint in the fifth spot would not be the worse thing – provided Chipper can stay healthy. For three days, I have heralded a one-man campaign to put Chipper on the 15 day DL in light of Conrad’s recent surge. In the absence of any trades, the 2010 Braves need a healthy and productive Chipper to come through with the same OBP, an average at .280 or above, at least 18 to 20 dingers, and 85 runs driven in.

In his present state of health, that ain’t gonna happen.

Me? I’ll be looking around for any evidence or photos of the zoot suits DOB wrote about manager Bobby Cox and the coaches wearing home from the trip to Milwaukee.

Hey, I just thought it was a Who song…

Carroll Rodgers. A Who fan. I like it! A reference to their classic rock opera Quadraphenia.

Heck, since she doesn’t do the whole song lyric thing like DOB, perhaps I can enlighten my fellow bloggers.

The Who “Cut My Hair”

Why should I care, if I have to cut my hair?
I got to move with the fashion, or be outcast,
I know I should fight,
but my old man is really alright,
And I’m still living at home, even though it won’t last.

Zoot suit, white jacket with side vents five inches long,
I’m out on the street again, and I’m leaping along.
Dressed right
For a street fight,
But I just can’t explain,
Why that uncertiain feeling, is still here in my brain.

The kids at school have parents that seem so cool,
And though I dont want to hurt em’, mine want me their way.

I clean my room and my shoes,
But my Momma found a box of blues,
And there doesn’t seem much hope they’ll let me stay

Zoot suit, white jacket with side vents five inches long,
I’m out on the street again, and I’m leaping along.
Dressed right
For a beach fight,
But I just can’t explain,
Why that uncertain feeling is still here in my brain.

Why do I have to be different to them,
Just earn the respect of a dancehall friend?
We have the same old row again and again.

Why do I have to move with a crowd, of kids that hardly notice I’m around?
I work myself to death, just to fit in!

I’m comin’ down,
Got home on the very first train from town.
My dad just left for work, and he wasn’t talking.
It’s all a game,
And inside I’m just the same.
My fried egg makes me sick first thing in the morning.

Not to be confused with “Cut Your Hair” by Pavement. Different song. Both good though.

ASN,

You said, “Here’s the problem with the law. Cops can stop folks who may appear to be illegal, whenever they want, if they have reasonable suspicion that the person is illegal.”

Actually, that is not what the law says. I’ve read it…talked to lawyers who’ve read it…and the law does not give police the leeway to do racial profiling. They cannot stop a person on suspicion that he/she is “illegal”. They can check for immigration documents if the person is stopped for another reason, i.e. traffic stop, etc. That is a far cry from racial profiling and the police must justify the reason for the stop. Abuse can happen with any law, but it is the exception, not the rule.

Proper identification is REQUIRED of all citizens who operate a vehicle. It is also required of ALL PEOPLE who immigrate to this country legally. If you have a green card you are supposed to carry it everywhere you go. Police have ALWAYS been within their rights to ask for identification from anyone in this country…including immigrants.

What is a shame about this protest is that it is so unnecessary. People don’t even know what is in the law. They are protesting a law that will not go into effect until August and they don’t even know what is it it.

Baseball teams, high school basketball teams…all of sports should not be places of political protest. That is what this is…a politicization of a law that MIRRORS…not changes but MIRRORS FEDERAL LAW. The only change is that it requires local police to enforce the FEDERAL law and that it requires a stop for another issue. Other than that…this is the FEDERAL LAW warmed over. People need to get the facts before going off the deep end.

Baseball should not even be involved in this. When the law goes into effect, I am sure, if anything smacks of abuse, our “lawmakers” will quickly jump on that and politicize that to win points in the latino community. Until the law is misused, we can protest until the cows come home and it won’t make a difference if 70% of Arizonians approve of the law. Only congress can act on this, or the Supreme Court. The cost of dealing with illegals in AZ has made the pubilc there dig in their heels. And rightly so.

What is being protested here is a law to stop the flow of ILLEGALS into the country…it is to stop the flow of people violating the LAW. I will say this, AZ needs to take this one step further and punish the employers who hire undocumented workers. Maybe that will get Congress to get off their tails and find a solution for EVERYONE affected by this.

Let’s continue the hot streak and sweep these last-place D’Backs. Braves need to take advantage of playing last-place teams that have hit injury bugs.

Sorry, but I have to leave a political note because it was included in the article and we’re Americans who believe in the 1st Amendment. It stinks that some people are protesting the D-Backs…they are obviously not the ones who wrote or passed the law. But, I have read the law and it does seem unfair to me.

Here’s the problem with the law. Cops can stop folks who may appear to be illegal, whenever they want, if they have reasonable suspicion that the person is illegal. Reasonable suspicion is a term of art, which is always subject to abuse. So think about that. How does anyone know if someone is illegal? What is reasonable enough to stop someone? Factors could include: appearance, language, etc. Do we really want to promote police to stop people based on their appearance or language? Is that the country we want?

Let’s think about a more practical example. A brown-colored US Citizen walking around in Arizona. Does that mean that he or she needs to start carrying around a passport if traveling in Arizona? Some might say, well, you should be carrying around your driver’s license. Good point, however, we all know that not every state requires proof of citizenship to get a driver’s license (GA does, so we’re all good, and we can say that to the cops). But, what happens if someone is stopped who doesn’t come from a State like Georgia that requires proof of citizenship to get a license? What if that same person doesn’t have his passport handy? Well, cops can access a computer and check federal records to make sure before arresting that person. At the same time, this individual is still being detained by the cops, based on appearance or language, even though he or she is an actual citizen! Sure, it’s just 20 minutes of time that could pass, but others can see those 20 minutes as a blatant abuse of power — especially when we are supposed to live in a world of “limited” government. It’s just what your philosophy is all about. Do you want more security or more privacy? It’s a great way to think about it. For me, it’s all about finding a workable balance.

I’d like to give police benefit of the doubt that they will only stop folks based on actual suspicion. But that’s always going to be an issue – cops must use discretion. And discretion is subject to abuse.

So folks, that’s what any protest should be about. This debate is around privacy. That’s it. It’s not about whether you like immigrants or not. I myself am an immigrant (moved here when I was three on a green card, became a citizen when I was 17). At bottom, It’s about how much control we want police to have on our lives and whether we can trust them to be honest.

Spread the word. Read the law. And respect people’s opinions if they happen to disagree.

But yes Huxley wrote a lot of essays.

Hey, maybe some of those protestors can take a baseball bat to Mark Reynolds’ knee cap for us.

That could be quite helpful. Just a thought.

Something tells me KJ’s gonna get shut down this weekend. I’m hoping KK has his breakthrough game tonight. I think he’s gonna bring it.

Bat, that just shows that I’m not all that cognizant on Upton Sinclair, either, LOL. I’m the one who should be embarrassed. :-) Just can’t get all the synapses to fire at will, anymore.
