jeffrey, still working on it but here it is for now -
May 14th, 20101:56 pm
Brian from SC – Well what they brought here to be then? Lowe has been the opening day starter for the past 2 years. He was billed as the guy who was going to “anchor” the staff.
Cle-I’d say that statement is no more worthy of doubt or ridicule than the one claiming it wasn’t right to protest in America.
Oh yeah, while the grounds crew is out there, change the sign in right center from “This is Braves Country” to “This is No-Hit Country” – should be an easy change, both Braves and No-Hit are 6 spaces and have the same menaning.
The draw back to Chipper being in the 2 hole is lack of speed. Heyward runs the bases better, so he and Prado will hopefully give Chipper a lot of RBI opportunities.
Heyward will be in the 3 or 4 soon anyway.
He can’t field, son. Sorry, that’s just the way it is. Nice kid, good clutch hitter with a talent for coming off the bench and getting a hit – not an easy thing to do. He cannot field.
If the Braves have an ideal that he can – which would be unfortunate, that a major league team would be so clueless – then you’ll find out, as they will, that he is a liability in the field.
RHR, I’d love to get political with you because you obviously don’t know what you are talking about in regards to the law. It actually PREVENTS the law from doing that based on appearance. But don’t let facts get in the way of your emotions.

You’re lineup is spot on!

Carroll – Would you be able to add a picture of the Milwaukee suits to the blog or somewhere we could see it.
Man that Dave O’Brien get’s an ass-load of time off eh.
what if I were to say that Kelly Johnson is the greatest baseball player who ever lived, and the Braves front office should be ashamed that they let such a fine ballplayer go?
FINALLY…someone who gets it

Uh-oh…think I watch too much “Mister Ed”…
I would like to see Medlen given a legitimate shot to nail down a spot in the rotation. He has more long-term potential than Kawakami. KK is already what 34, 35 years old?
T for Texas

A baseball sonnet maybe?
did Hinske break up with your sister williamshakespeare? He won Rookie of the Year at 3B FYI.

Jeez DOB, Cranky?
May 14th, 20102:01 pm
It’s a little testy here this afternoon
Brian from SC
Actually, Lew, if you want to use the same stat, the Giants are 25-14 in Lincecum’s starts the last two years. Bout the same as Lowe.
I will take Eric Hinske in LF over Chipper, Garrett Anderson, Ryan Church, Brandon Jones, Josh Anderson…I can’t even remember who we’ve stuck out there, Ryan Klesko, i’d take Hinske over all of them.
Medlen will get his chance as soon as JJ gets back. Unless KK goes on a win streak.
May 14th, 20102:02 pm
Jeffrey d – testy?

Sorry girl, just wanted you to be sure since you’re a real asset to this blog and a true insider fan. Always a pleasure reading your thoughts..
Way to call ‘em like you see ‘em (@Renegator).
Fun times, huh?
I would like to know what Wren’s plan for 3B. Chipper is clearly a shell of his former self, and he has pronounced that he has no intentiones of retiring. Who would have guessed that Chipper wouldn’t walk away from $13million/year???? We have no 3B prospect in the minors that I am aware of. I guess we will have to make through 2 more years of Chipper plodding along at 3B.
Do you think Hinske is a worse defender than Loaf? (Garret Anderson)
May 14th, 20102:04 pm
I feel like the blog is teetering on the edge of madness this afternoon. Most of the political stuff is gone, but there’s still a post here and there, every one of which threatens to turn the blog into a circus.
As was pointed out on SNL, “show me your papers” is the favorite phrase of Nazis in almost every World War II movie ever made. Way to go Arianaziona!
Rough Estimate, maybe you can send him an e-mail.
DOB Yes, if you call spending six hours Friday in airports and plans (flight delayed by storms) around Chicago/Milwaukee, then spending several hours today writing Sunday Braves Insider and on the blog and Twitter, then I guess I’m on vacation.
you should try the beach.
May 14th, 20102:05 pm
T For Texas – I liked the Tex trade. I just meant that inevitably some people here will start complaining about it again because Matt Harrison struck someone out, or Yunel forgot to tag at 3rd…
SNL-It was used in a Cheech and Chong skit, too back aroud 72 or so. “Sign ze papers, Old Man or we will hurt your daughter.”
Also its like a cost/benefit allowance, a better defensive player like Melky may prevent a run or two with his defense he is a huge liability at the plate. While Hinske may be cause an extra run with his defense, he will make that up plus more with his bat, which is where the team is lacking. Bobby has been doing it perfectly, start Hinske to spark the offense, get the lead, then put in Melky to help preserve it.
May 14th, 20102:06 pm
LINEUP WE COULD ALL BE PLEASED WITH:
1. Prado 2B
2. Hinske LF
3. Heyward RF
4. Jones 3B
5. McCann C
6. Glaus 1B
7. Infante SS
8. McLouth or Cabrera CF
Who’s not happy with that? Heyward 3rd and Chipper 4th…let’s start a rally about that!!!
analysis not allowance
No disrespect intended, but you are grievously mistaken. I guess you’ll just have to let your eyes be the judge, and over a larger sample size. I don’t, however, believe the Braves could possibly be in the dark about this, so I don’t seriously think he’ll be seeing a lot of reps in COF.
You have to understand, I am saying this in context of understanding that COFers are ALREADY guys you compromise on defensively because of their bats. But Hinske isn’t even THAT guy. He’s worse, much worse.
Brian From SC – Do you have his email address? How about a cell #? I am sure he would love to hear from me on a wonderful Friday afternoon. Hell, he might let me come sit in the GM box at Turner Field tonight? Think so?
May 14th, 20102:07 pm
T for Texas, Gammons has a point. Look at the time when they did the deal for Tex. Most teams have the “win now” mentality and Wren is dead on that those prospects dealt were blocked. Yes, they could’ve deal later for other needs on the team, but that “win now” mode is there again. Besides, Scheurholz made that deal and he should be defending that deal with Gammons, not Wren.
I still don’t get the line, Braves fan base needs subtitles. Read it more than once and I still don’t understand.
May 14th, 20102:08 pm
Glad to know someone’s on vacation around here – i’m working my ass of here.
Let’s see what i’ve done today so far…..Talk Braves…answer the phone…more Braves…get some coffee…Check out Talking Chop…check cell phone to look at my new Braves wallpaper…bathroom with the sports section…more AJC Braves talk…look out the window…..answer the phone – it’s my friend wanting to talk Braves…fiddle with some faxes and press releases…youtube Jason Heyward’s opening day homer…throw on some Hall and Oates…
It’s been a good day.
May 14th, 20102:09 pm
Thing I don’t understand is if Chipper is not worthy of batting third, why do y’all think cleanup or sixth – both RBI positions in the order – are where a player whop is getting on base regularly, but NOT hitting for power should be hitting? Seems to me batting him 2nd would be much better – IF he’s moved at all.
May 14th, 20102:10 pm
rough estimate I would like to know what Wren’s plan for 3B.
ok, this one is easy. wren signed chipper to a 3 year extension which started this year. so maybe a little closer to 2013, you can check in on this topic.
“It’s a little testy here this afternoon”
That’s the problem with a 48-hour gap between games. (That, and people’s inability to let the debate about Arizona’s law go.)
May 14th, 20102:11 pm
And DOB…come on man, we all feel bad for the beat writer of the Atlanta Braves. You hang out with these guys everyday, travel to the coolest citites in the country and get to watch all of OUR favorite players and team on a daily basis.
Sure your job is not as glamorous as it seems but really nobody’s is. Take a step back sometimes and stop bitching about how tough your job is when EVERYBODY who frequents this blog with any regularity would love to do what you do. Enjoy your recovery time and we are all looking forward to your continued in-depth coverage of our baseball team that we love so much…sans your complaining and negativity.
Hold on…Yunel forgot to tag at third, and Matt Harrison got a K?! If you tell me that Elvis Andrus is paying a solid SS and Neftali Feliz has made the Rangers’ roster…I will totally freak out!
The Tex trade would have been an acceptable trade if it were one where the Braves knew they could re-sign him to a long term contract, and if the Braves had a team capable of more than just “getting to the playoffs”. The Braves haven’t had a team that was a legitimate threat to win a W.S. since the days of Maddux, Glavine, Smotlz.
The question is, why has Cabrera’s bat gone south? He was very good at fighting off that high outside heat LH. He looks lost at the plate, and hitting way under his career average.
also FYI Williamshakespeare,
There were a lot of people including many other teams who were saying the same things about Jason Werth that you are about Hinske. Luckily GM’s don’t ask you.
Buckhead Braves, until Hinske starts to show why he’s labled a “utility man” around MLB. He’s been awesome and I’d definitely play him in LF right now over Diaz or Cabrera, but I wouldn’t get ahead of myself.
May 14th, 20102:12 pm
I can see I haven’t missed anything.. same ol’ same ol’
Half of the idiots protesting have not read the law but hey, in today’s world that does not matter. Every state should have the same law and please do not trash me unless you have read the law and have a clue.
DAP – Well if that is Wren’s plan, it is failing miserably.
About Chipper’s position in the lineup…..What if one of you stat guys out there compared Chipper’s stats this year or his stats since last June to the N.L. average stats for each position in the batting order and see where those N.L. stats says he should be hitting.
May 14th, 20102:13 pm
Basically if you are pulled over you have to show ID that you are a US citizen. Nothing new there.
I hate politics, especially on this blog and this will be my 1st and last comment on this subject. I had no idea one has to carry an ID that proves you are US citizen, when pulled over. I guess that means we have to carry our passports whenever we drive because driver’s license can not prove that one is a citizen…
Back to baseball – have the crazies contributed 1st Ballgame comment yet?
Moe-For me it wasn’t about Arizona or The Law. It was the notion that whoever wants to can’t protest anywhere they choose to protest or what they want to protest about. THAT was what I was calling intolerant. Protest is the life blood of this country and being allowed to do it is what makes us unique. I won’t stand for anyone saying you aren’t allowed or shouldn’t do it. That’s BS and nothing but.
Escobar is one of the few Braves with current trade value. Is Infante a bona fide every day MLB shortstop?
I suspect Escobar is not well liked on the team because of his hot dogging. Even if he hits .320, does he drag the rest of the team down? I wouldn’t be surprised if some other player with the same injury would not have been encouraged or allowed back into the line-up sooner.
I would love to hear from others the possibility of Escobar being moved, and what we gain/lose with Infante as a regular at SS.
May 14th, 20102:14 pm
This should help…. Here’s the definition of “Invasion”
1. The act of invading, especially the entrance of an armed force into a territory to conquer.
2. A large-scale onset of something injurious or harmful, such as a disease.
3. An intrusion or encroachment.
Brooks Conrad produced as much in TWO GAMES and Chipper has the entire year!
Good grief…this place has turned into a truly repulsive $#**-hole in just an hour and a half. This is my cue to GTFO. I thought the in-game sessions were un-bearable. Somebody cross the streams. There’s definitely a very slim chance we’ll survive.

Do you think Hinske is a worse defender than Loaf? (Garret Anderson)
In a word – yes. Anderson at least once had instincts for getting a good jump.
Mind you, Hinske is not slow. He’s a squat, thick-bodied guy, but he can actually run fairly well. The problem is, he can’t track balls well. Just can’t do it. He doesn’t close very well on the ball, either.
May 14th, 20102:16 pm
jeremy_he wasn’t bitching about working hard, he was responding to a thoughtless (or supposedly funny post) and was commenting that he wasn’t on vacation, but this was a day off – the first he’s had in six 12 hour days.
Damn straight Jeremy. That’s the lineup that BC should pencil in. Having Chipper “protect” Heyward from the cleanup spot would probably light a fire under Chipper somehow since he loves the 3 hole so much. His singles and doubles would work well with Prado, Hinske and Heyward ahead of him in the lineup. BC probably won’t do it since it weakens the bottom portion of the lineup w/o Hinske down there, but I agree w/ you. BTW, I love Chipper, my pug’s name is Chipper for cryin out loud, but he might need a little change like this to get him goin.
May 14th, 20102:17 pm
I think Escobar’s trade value is at the lowest it’s ever been at the moment.
Transplant-Then there are incursions like The British Invasion, which brought us some really great music in the mid 60’s.
And with that…I’m out of this discussion. You do NOT want to get political with me. RHR
Oh I bet it would be a hoot, just at another forum.
now i know you are full of it. Garrett Anderson last year was maybe the biggest defensive liability on a baseball field in the last 10 years. He made Adam Dunn in LF look like a gold glover.
May 14th, 20102:18 pm
I wasn’t saying that anyone shouldn’t allowed to protest. I am just saying that a baseball game is not an appropriate forum for political protests. Go protest at the state capital, but not while people are trying to enjoy a baseball game.
May 14th, 20102:19 pm
May 14th, 2010
I’m with you on that.
May 14th, 20102:20 pm
Lew, I absolutely agree with you (and am not attributing any testiness to you). I agree that we have too reined in the ability to demonstrate and protest. I have no problems with the protest. I also have definite opinions on the Arizona law but don’t want to debate those here.
May 14th, 20102:21 pm
Is there anyone getting out to Gwinnett to see them play tonight?
So is today’s williamshakespeare, yesterday’s Sancho Panza and Dulcinea. Do we just have a blogger with a great love for early 17th century literature?
At least two-thirds of our miseries spring from human stupidity, human malice and those great motivators and justifiers of malice and stupidity: idealism, dogmatism and proselytizing zeal on behalf of religous or political ideas.
May 14th, 20102:22 pm
Let me Congratulate the AJC for the Article of Pete Van Wieren in today Paper. He is talking about groin up without his father.
There is no such thing as a non appropriate forum for protest. This is the U.S.. It is our right and something the country has been based on since it’s inception. Yu supposedly are extremely pro American . Surprised this hasn’t imprinted on you . Youdon’t like what is being protested? So what. Ignore it or go protest that with your own sign. And then don’t come here to talk about it.
Thanks! And thanks for pointing out my misspelling…heck, I get on people for misspelling McCann…
May 14th, 20102:23 pm
How are williamshakespeare and T for Texas posting in the future?
May 14th, 20102:25 pm
I’m okay with Heyward in the 2 spot. Notice that since Bobby moved him up in the order, he stole his first 2 bases of the year? Two games up in the lineup, 2 SB.
I’d rather have Heyward on base (possibly stealing 2nd if needed, and certainly able to go 1st to 3rd on a single, 1st to home on a double) with Chipper at the plate, than to have slow-footed Chipper on base for Heyward.
Heyward will get plenty of RBI opps either way, but it’s nice to have some speed on the bases for Chipper, Glaus & McCann – all of whom can drive him in, but won’t hit a ton of HR.
At least I think there’s an argument to be made for it.
May 14th, 20102:27 pm
Did JJ have an MRI?????????
Then again, I’m certain you work 12-13 hours a day for six days in a row on your job, then call a day off “vacation,” right? You’re joking, I do realize (at least, I hope you are). But it’s so absurd that it’s hard just to let it pass. You working hard today, by the way, while firing off those comments from the peanut gallery? How ’bout this weekend? Working, or will you be on on “vacation” this weekend? —Mr. DOB
Damn, that is some serious rapage right there. Go ahead on Mr. O’Brien.
May 14th, 20102:29 pm
I don’t care how bad it is for you in your home country. Illegals taking jobs from Americans only weakens Americans, and country should come first.
Political. Suspended, plus two days at Ellis Island for re-education.
You guys just keep throwin’ ‘em out there. I’m making a list.
May 14th, 20102:30 pm
Told the wife yesterday we are taking our family (around 20) to Arizona for our family vacation this year! All Americans should support the people of Arizona in their attempts to enforce the law, even if our President and Attorney General will not do the same in violation of their oaths of office! By the way, Georgia has a similar law please don’t tell anyone! Go BRAVES!
As an AMERICAN who believes in the Constitution, I’ll be the first person to say they have every right in the world to stage a protest that the media will eat up like cake…however wrong their viewpoints may be…and in this case, they are extremely wrong.
When US citizens are in any foreign country, we are required to carry our passports, validation of who we are, where we are from and what our business is being in that foreign land.
For those Lib’s who share the protesters point of view, just read up on Mexico’s laws concerning immigration. If the roles were reversed and you were there illegally, you’d be in jail no questions asked, fined heavily, perhaps violated while in custody, then deported.
As a Braves fan, hope they keep up the hot streak and get back in the race!!
So Lowe and Kawakami both have an ERA of 5.73, yet Lowe is 5-3 and Kawakami is 0-6. Seems a bit unfair.
May 14th, 20102:31 pm
Scoots, you do realize every one of your responses is political, right?
May 14th, 20102:32 pm
DID JJ have an MRI???
May 14th, 20102:34 pm
stop bitching about how tough your job is when EVERYBODY who frequents this blog with any regularity would love to do what you do
Oh, man, LOL. Might want to check that “everybody” at the door, there, muchacho.
Good article by Gammons however he does realize that Vizcaino is 4-3 with an era over 4 in Rome. I wouldnt exactly call that “burning it up” down in Rome.
Why does DOB require so much time away from the Braves beat? The players have the same grind as he, and they’re expending a lot more physical energy than he is.
Not that I don’t enjoy Ms. Rogers just as much!
May 14th, 20102:35 pm
Of course, LOL. But mine are funny.
Julio Teheran has been promoted to Myrtle Beach if anybody cares.
Soph – good job! I like it.
Jeremy – like that lineup a lot!
Brian – threatens to turn the blog into a circus.
So….a return to the norm?
May 14th, 20102:36 pm
I’ll be stopping by to check on DOB. Poster gives him a hard time about another vacation, and he starts complaining about his “job” which entails: blogging, watching baseball, hanging out with players, and writing (which you are really good at) for a game that doesn’t even go year round. Hey…don’t taze me bro. Btw…glad to see you calling out BC and the team in general this year.
This planned protest is just as narrow- minded and ignorant as the law being protested. These guys are ball players, not legislators. Leave them out of it!
May 14th, 20102:37 pm
Brick wall, where are youuuu?
Changing subjects. If you have not read the Professor’s first person elsewhere on these pages, do so. It is a extremely powerful piece.
Only have had one opportunity to meet Pete – at a 400 Club annual event some years ago. While wondering how a dad, mom and daughter from Clearwater, Florida could be Braves fans, he was most gracious on a evening when his time was extremely limited. A class act.
Uh oh, time warp hit the blog again.
May 14th, 20102:38 pm
