Chipper needs to be dropped to 6 or 7. He is one of the all-time greats, but he is past his prime and there is no need for him to pull a Biggio or Bagwell and limp into retirement while hurting his team. Move him down in the order.

Brian from SC – That is mostly to the fact that the one hitter hasn’t gotten on base. But the odds of Heyward having more guys on by batting 3-5 is obvious, especially with Chipper hitting in front of him, not behind him.

1. Prado 2B

7. Infante SS

T for Texas, there is probably a decent difference between hitting 2nd and 8th, for example, mainly because of the increased number of plate appearances you get by hitting higher, but between the 2nd and 3rd spots the difference would be so insignificant, something like Chipper’s accomplishments and pride are a good enough reason to keep him in the 3rd spot.

I dislike moving Prado from the 2nd spot in the lineup, but what are you to do when you don’t have a leadoff hitter. If Bobby is going to move Prado to leadoff, then i love Chipper hitting 2nd, and Heyward hitting 3rd. Chipper Jones is the only player in the world who can hit a solid .230 and have a .420 OBP. That’s respect. I like Heyward hitting behind the always on base Chipper Jones.

Heyward will bat cleanup before he bats third (with Chipper in the lineup, that is). But with the black hole that has been the leadoff spot so far, I think Cox really wants another bat in that top 3rd. If Yunel comes back strong, he might fill that spot (either leadoff or 2nd) and let Heyward hit in a so-called “run-producing” spot.

Agreed about plate appearances and Chipper’s pride. I was just thinking that in the NL with the pitcher hitting 9th, that that would mean that over the course of the season that the 3rd hitter would bat with significantly more men on base given that the combined OBP of the 1st and 2nd hitter > combined OBP of the 9th and the 1st hitter. Is that a false assumption?

T for Texas, yes, the 3rd hitter will see a few more baserunners, and a few more baserunners in scoring position. But really, studies have shown that it doesn’t make much of a difference.
According to computer simulations I’ve see (I know, it’s just pretend), the ideal lineup usually has a pitcher batting 8th and the best hitter batting 2nd. You get the advantage of your best hitter having more plate appearances, and having a hitter in the 9 spot gives him more runners on base.
usnavyvolfaninva,
I don’t know if Chipper would come right out and say it, but I think it would hurt his pride some. And Bobby’s the kind of manager that knows that and will accommodate his players up to the point that it is obviously hurting the team. The Braves aren’t close to that point yet, IMO.

Too bad I won’t be in town this weekend, so I could bring pro Arizona immigration law sign to the game(or at least the front gate where they’d be at). What part of illegal do people not understand, and what does it have to do with baseball, or any sport for that matter. You want to protest it, go to Arizona and protest it.
I have no issue with immigrants coming into this country the right way, but if you’re illegal then you need to go back, I don’t care how bad it is for you in your home country. Illegals taking jobs from Americans only weakens Americans, and country should come first.

I still don’t know what’s wrong with the law? I thought it only effected those that are here illegally is that not true?
Whats wrong with it is it gives Arizona police the authority to demand people to show their papers based on their appearance. Doesn’t matter if they’ve committed a crime, doesn’t matter if they’re legal, doesn’t matter if they’re helping an old woman cross the street, doesn’t matter if they’re a millionaire who has been a legal US citizen spending their millions in Arizona for years. The only qualifier for being asked to show their papers is that their skin isn’t white enough.

For those that never took history in School.
History of Arizona:
There is some disagreement over the proper etymology of the name “Arizona.” Possible origins supported by historians are the spanish sentence ‘zona arida’ (desert region), shortened to arizona or the Basque phrase aritz ona, “good oak,”[11][12][13] and the O’odham phrase alĭ ṣonak, “small spring”.[14] The Basque etymology is the one preferred by Arizona state historian Marshall Trimble, among other specialists. The name Arizonac was initially applied to the area near the silver mining camp of Planchas de Plata, Sonora, and later (shortened to Arizona) to the entire territory.
Marcos de Niza, a Spanish Franciscan, explored the area in 1539 and met its original native inhabitants, probably the Sobaipuri. The expedition of Spanish explorer Coronado entered the area in 1540–42 during its search for Cíbola. Society of Jesus Father Kino developed a chain of missions and taught the Indians Christianity in Pimería Alta (now southern Arizona and northern Sonora) in the 1690s and early 1700s. Spain founded presidios (fortified towns) at Tubac in 1752 and Tucson in 1775. When Mexico achieved its independence from Spain in 1821, what is now Arizona became part of the Mexican Territory Nueva California, also known as Alta California.[15] In the Mexican–American War (1847), the U.S. occupied Mexico City and forced the newly founded Mexican Republic to give up its northern territories, including what later became Arizona.

When you look at how much Derek Lowe and Kawakami are being paid, and the percentage of the Braves payroll that is being spent on them, I think it is pretty easy to say that they have both been major busts as of right now. Lowe was supposed to have been a #1, he has been far from it. Kawakami was supoosed to be a #3, and he has excelled only in a relief role at the end of last year.

Getting away with Hinske in the OF on a regular basis is not possible.
He can’t field. It seems some of you have this notion he can be an everyday player. But he can’t, because he would get exposed defensively. I thought it was common knowledge that Hinske’s glove is token. You have to sneak him in and out of the corner and cross your fingers it doesn’t cost you.
He is a specialist: an excellent pinch hitter with power. That’s what he does well. Expecting him to provide even passable defense on a daily basis is not realistic.

Good for Arizona. All the new law does is uphold old laws. Not to get too political, but illegal aliens are becoming a huge issue in our country, particularly out in California. I would like to see Chipper continue hitting third with Heyward 4th. Heyward is our best power hitter, and clean-up is where your best homerun threat typically hits. I don’t mind seeing Heyward in the 3rd spot, but batting him second makes no sense to me. Once Escobar returns, I like Prado, Escobar, Chipper, Heyward, McCann, Glaus, Hinske, and McLouth (against right handed pitchers), and Prado, Escobar, Chipper, Heyward, Glaus, McCann, Diaz, and McLouth against lefties. I also wouldn’t mind seeing Infante in CF against lefties if he is not needed elsewhere.

DOB on vacation again? — Renegator
Yes, if you call spending six hours Friday in airports and plans (flight delayed by storms) around Chicago/Milwaukee, then spending several hours today writing Sunday Braves Insider and on the blog and Twitter, then I guess I’m on vacation.
Then again, I’m certain you work 12-13 hours a day for six days in a row on your job, then call a day off “vacation,” right?
You’re joking, I do realize (at least, I hope you are). But it’s so absurd that it’s hard just to let it pass. You working hard today, by the way, while firing off those comments from the peanut gallery? How ’bout this weekend? Working, or will you be on on “vacation” this weekend?

Carol,
Most certainly, Chipper should be dropped from the 3-hole, probably to 7th. I think he feels like batting third is a right for him, but he’s really done nothing lately to deserve hitting there. Heyward hit well there in the last few games and should get the chance to drive in runs with Prado on base and to give Glaus an opportunity to drive him in. (Wow, never expected to be saying that about Glaus a month ago!)
