Will – KJ could revert to a .250 hitter with 10 homers the rest of the year and he still would have been the best LF we could buy with our budget.

Thank dog no one will think I wrote that.

You have to love Mets fans! They win a few games and they act like they actually won something over the past 25 years. Most Braves fans hate Mets fans, I don’t. Quite frankly when I see those fat arrrsses at games with hair coming out from under the back of their tank-top and I’m talking about the women Mets fans they make me feel better about myself. Wow to be a Mets fan……. I’d rather stab myself in the eye with a soldering Iron.

Prado and Heyward in the top two spots wouldn’t bother me. But I can see why Bobby hasn’t done it (yet). Heyward is really the only power threat in the lineup right now, and you’re sort of neutralizing that when you bat him 2nd.

When you bat your two best hitters (perhaps) 1-2, you’re pretty much putting them in positions where they don’t have many guys on base when they’re at the plate. Since Chipper is getting on base, but not driving the ball, I think he’d be the ideal leadoff hitter right now. But I still wouldn’t do it if I was the manager…he’s earned that #3 spot, and he’s comfortable there.

I do like the idea of Escobar hitting 2nd, Prado 3rd, Chipper 4th, BMac 5th, Heyward 6th, Hinske/Glaus 7th

I know Chipper feels more comfortable in the 3 hole but based on our personnel he needs to be cleanup

Taken individually, the components of this team aren’t bad. We just seem to be jinxed right now….We can either go the Bull Durham direction and we run down to Turner Field tonight and turn on the sprinklers so we can have a rain day tomorrow…Or we can do the Major League thing and kill a chicken and offer it up to JOBU to change our luck….Which way do we go, DOB?

Cox doesn’t like that Rob from SC

I remember a story about Maddux not long ago. Somebody drilled a Brave hitter and Cox said someone has to make him pay. The next time they met that team Maddux asked Cox if he meant what he said, Cox said yeah and Maddux went out and drilled the guy. But Cox does not go for that, right.

ChrisfromSacramento,CA (April 29th, 2010 3:35 pm EST): Kelly and Adam are doing well. TP just makes hitters worse.

Do you have any empirical evidence this is true? If not, could you stop saying it? I don’t mean to pick on you, everyone seems to be on this irrational management hate train right about now. Just because you’re frustrated with the team, though, doesn’t mean changes need to be made. And unless you have empirical evidence they do need to be made, you’re just talking out of your ass.

Nate cant see the ball at all.

Adrian Gonzalez’s suddenly giddy agent John Boggs on the Ryan Howard contract: “I’m very happy for Ryan Howard. Obviously this bodes well for Adrian Gonzalez because it validates the fact that he’s worth that kind of money or more.”

Boggs noted that Howard was a controlled player not eligible for free agency until November 2011 — same as Gonzalez.

From our notes network correspondent Tom Krasovic: Obviously Howard is the more accomplished slugger, by far. Gonzalez, however, is 30 months younger than Howard. He’s also the better defender. The two play in vastly different ballparks. Gonzalez’s home yard is the worst in baseball for hitters.

The Padres, according to Boggs, haven’t approached him about an extension for Gonzalez. Padres players have framed it this way: If they can stay in playoff contention through the July 31st trade deadline, the Padres will be far more likely to keep Gonzalez..

So far, the players are doing their part to keep Gonzo around. The Padres (13-8) lead the National League West.

Memo to Frank Wren (and I paraphrase): It’s the philosophy, stupid.

This is not a great team that is having a slump. This is an average team that would’ve had to play B+ overachieving baseball in order to even win a W-Card spot. Like last year’s team, there were WAY too many answers going into the season, hitting-wise. Years of signing aging/failing/recovering bats that were once great for $2 million took its toll on a lineup that has not has a single All-Star caliber hitter string together two seasons of All-Star numbers since the heyday (yeah, I said it) of Chipper and Andruw back in the first third of this decade.

Since 1991, the Braves have been characterized by great pitching and passable hitting. Since Cox and JS took over – and with the exceptions of A. Jones, C. Jones, Javy Lopez, and, to a lesser extent, David Justice – there has been very little hitting development in the organization. Remember, we are talking about twenty years! Now, two decades of poor position player development, as well as putrid hitting evaluations, have led to the seeming demise of this once-proud franchise. What does it say to the average Braves’ fan that the only remnant left from the mid-decade “Baby Braves” is Brian McCann?

This failure rests on JS’s and Frank Wren’s heads. As I’ve said before, the mythology that was the greateness of the Braves was built exclusively upon three arms: Maddux, Glavine, and Smoltz. The further that memory seems to us all, the starker the truth becomes.

B from SC:

See your point. But it also seems like there have been many RBI sittuations for the top 2 spots in the order here early in the season. I don’t know. Would be nice if Chipper would realize that the power seems to have faded in the last 3 years. If he could come to grips with that and go back to spray hitting like he did when he won the batting title, he could be the kind of impact leadoff hitter that Jeter is for NYY. And with Esco limping off the field…. But, I know, Chipper will only bat 3rd.

Interestingly, all of the teams that you’d think would be contenders in the NL this year (not including the Mets) increased their payrolls this year…except for the Braves, who sliced theirs by around 13%.
