Dang! I hate when I make an “important” post at the end of a page. Here it is again, with an addition.

Jersey Gil -Strange, but the Peanuts cartoon they ran in our paper yesterday had Charlie Brown throwing the pitch over the backstop and hitting Lucy’s Mom.
Did anyone see the report that they’re going to tear down Giants stadium and when they do they’ll look for Jimmy Hoffa in the end zone to see if the rumor’s true?
Remember when we were all upset that the Red Sox beat the Braves in the Tazawa bidding last year? Tazawa set to have Tommy John surgery in Birmingham Tuesday.
Drew-It was on my Comcast Home Page, but Gil has a good link there. Apparently the FBI will NOT oversee the end zone deconstruction. Maybe they already know the answer?
Interesting, and surprising: Looks like Garrett Anderson is going to make the Dodgers out of spring training. To make room, the Dodgers released Brian Barton. You may remember him as the literal rocket scientist we got from the Cardinals for Blaine Boyer. He appeared in one game with the Braves, as a pinch runner, and got caught stealing. Nice Braves career, lol.
Seriously, he appears to be a good guy…hope he gets another shot.
Got confused reading the article… kept waiting for them to say they would look for it. Nonetheless, it would be interesting though. Hard to believe that they found 5+ bodies there during the construction.
Interesting story there about a team from the Big Apple. The thought of them searching section 107 spiked my interest a bit. Much more so than the story I read about the Mets putting Reyes and Murphy on the DL to start the season… sounds like business as usual everywhere in New York.
Hard to believe that they found 5+ bodies there during the construction.
and that they quit reporting them after that, because it slowed down their work. so…when they found a body, did they just put it in a pile somewhere? work around it?
Opening Day Start Monday, Here my pick for 2010 Season:
National League American League
East : Braves Tampa
Central: Cubby White Sox
West: San Fran Mariners
WC : Brewers Boston
Natl champ: Bravos American Champ: Ray
WS : Braves Vs Ray…..Braves
World Series going to be play in Warm weather Folks.
Reed Johnson is the Dodgers’ fourth outfielder, so I’m guessing Anderson will be mainly a pinch hitter. To his credit, Anderson has hit .310 with 3 HR in spring training, but the Dodgers should know that’s likely a mirage. Oh well, good for Garrett.
Where’s Anders lately? Must be laying low based on the Mets outlook for 2010. Don should switch and be a Mets fan, since he loves to b*tch and moan so much. That would give him valid reason. I don’t know what his excuse will be this year if we win the WS.

Garrett did have an OPS around .800 around August 1st or so. But then he slipped the rest of the season. Couldn’t tell whether that was simply regression back to his true talent, or an old man getting worn out playing everyday, or some combo of both
The Rockies have lost their closer, Huston Street, maybe for a while. Lefty Fanklin Morales will pitch the ninth for them now. Every little bit helps (not that I want to see anyone injured).
raleighbravesfan: well tell me what it your pick: St Louis?…everybody pick the Cardinal but i’m going with, this will be the odd year..lot of surprises this year. No Yankee,no Rocky, No phillis no Angels or Dodger.
Braveheart, Garrett’s early August OPS was aided by a .944 July. In June it was .804, but every other month it was under .700. In the first and last months of the season it was under .600.
I think he did get worn down. But mostly he was just awful.
Wanting to get the season off to a good start, naturally Cox would pick Lowe as his opening day starter. And naturally, you Cox lovers would think it is great no matter who he picked. Granted this is probably a minor thing; but the point is — If some other managers did some of the things that Cox does, you would think they were terrible – but if Cox does it, you think it is great.
Wanting to get the season off to a good start, naturally Cox would pick Lowe as his opening day starter.
I agree…good point, Don.
And naturally, you Cox lovers would think it is great no matter who he picked.
Yeah, with his track record, probably so. I would call myself more of a “Braves lover”, though.
Granted this is probably a minor thing
Very good, Don!
If some other managers did some of the things that Cox does, you would think they were terrible – but if Cox does it, you think it is great.
Nah, that’s not true. But you really did well on this post, Don. 75% was good…much improved. You keep that up, and you’ll get to be a valuable Braves fan, sure enough!
Here’s the lineup, at least as Cox had it last night (we’ll see if Chipper’s ready when they get here; they’re arriving late today, skipping BP on getaway day)
Has Hinske played the outfield at all during the spring? He is hitting the ball pretty hard from the looks of it. I wonder if he would be able to play the outfield off and on, or is he just considered a 1B/pinch hitter at this point in time?
My brackets did have a lot of upsets… just the wrong ones. (I’m dreading a move to a 96 team playoff by the way. I look bad enough as it is.) Although, I don’t see anyone other than the Cubs having any kind of a shot at STL over 162 games so if youre picking upset, might as well pick them.
Man I had not looked at my bracket in a while and when I logged back in I can’t believe I am up to 330,000th place after hovering around 1.5Mth place. I sort of lost interest when Nova lost because I had them as my champion. But I got 2 of the 4 finalist correct Mich St and WV. I guess the Mich St prediction really moved me up.
I have Mich St in the finals, so I gotta say if they win Saturday, I could have the best result in years…. which is not saying much though.
Yeah I don’t know how anyone picks the Cubs over the cards. The Cards have at least 2 SP who are better than any of the Cubs SPs. And the Cards have the best player in the game in the middle of their line-up. And the Cubs bullpen is really weak.
I think the Brewers are more of a threat to the Cards than the Cubs… they can really score some runs and at least have a guy with #1 stuff at the front end of their rotation.
Jersey Gil – I don’t think the Cubs have the pitching, but it is a weak division. I’m picking Brewers, but I believe the Cards will finish ahead of the Cubs. Too bad. I’d love for you to be right.
raleighbravesfan ..i pick the Brewers as a WC..you right that Div is weak. But i don’t see the card to win, they will be close but i have the Filling that Pujols this year going to have the same season of Chipper have last.
The Braves’ right fielder created the most spring training buzz since Albert Pujols tore up Cardinals camp in 2001. Which would you rather have when it comes to the NL Rookie of the Year Award: Heyward or the field? I’m not taking the field, not even a field that includes Strasburg and Chapman.
Heyward seems like a lock for 20 home runs. Not so impressed by that number? The dude is 20 years old. Only 13 players have ever hit 20 homers at or before their age 20 season, and that includes only two 20/20 Club members in the past 31 years: a couple of guys named Ken Griffey Jr. and Alex Rodriguez.
Forget the Fred McGriff comparisons; Heyward is far more athletic. Forget the Willie McCovey comparisons; McCovey was only a .270 career hitter. Forget the Willie Stargell comparisons; Stargell never walked even 90 times. Just let Heyward be who he will be, and enjoy a very unique player
Also, seeing McLouth in the 8th spot makes me think. I know Bobby would never do it, but I’d at least think about hitting the pitcher and 8th and McLouth 9th making McLouth somewhat of a leadoff hitter from the 9 spot.
Also, hitting 8th will limit Nate’s running opportunities. When he reaches first with no outs or one out, he is gonna get bunted over. With two outs, you never run with the pitcher up at the risk of having the pitcher leadoff the next inning. Nate is one of the best base stealers around and I don’t want to see his opportunities to run minimized.
Hey guys, I have a question for those familiar with the area around Turner Field. I’m heading to the game on opening day, but I hate to miss out on watching all of the great day games on opening day. Where would you recommend going near the Ted where I can get some lunch and watch baseball on several screens simultaneously (while actually enjoying what I’m eating)?????
(Also, walking a mile or so is not really a problem.) Thanks for any advice.
Bravofan, thanks for the idea, but I’d really like to be able to watch multiple games. Plus, I’d rather not have any gastrointestinal distress when I go to the game either.
glen w, i agree on the cardinals. in fact, ill take it a step further and say that i believe the cardinals are the class of the NL. they might be the best team. thats right ESPN, even better than the phillies.
The Cardinals are certainly more balanced than the Phillies. But then again, so are the Braves probably. The Phillies are a little more one-dimensional, but what a big dimension that offense is.
Lawton – I have to think that BC would love to get Nate back to the leadoff spot for that very reason, but that he just wants to take the pressure off for now. I think if Nate hits at all in the few remaining games that he could actually be in the leadoff spot on opening day.
“glen w, i agree on the cardinals. in fact, ill take it a step further and say that i believe the cardinals are the class of the NL. they might be the best team. thats right ESPN, even better than the phillies.”
-DAP
Right now I would say 1. Rockies 2. Cardinals 3. Phillies 4. Braves. And I think the Braves are a deeper, more rounded team, I just need to see them put it together to say I would move them ahead of the Phillies.
Gil, I think all the covers have Halladay as the main picture, the local picture is in the top right. I have the one with McCann but it is only a small shot, so not sure if you are interested in that. If you are let me know your e-mail and I will get your address and send it over with pleasure (once I have read the Magazine of course).
The good thing about the NL is that no one is head and shoulders above the rest of the league, in my opinion. Rockies, Cards, Phils and Braves all have a chance to make themselves the class of the league.
If Billingsly and Kershaw turn the corner, the Dodgers would be in the mix too. No?
I personally think everyone is ranking the Rockies are a little higher on people’s list then they should be. I think the Braves have gotten some key pieces to the puzzle this offseason and if Chipper has a good year the Braves are golden I wanna see em send Bobby out on top
If Billingsly and Kershaw turn the corner, the Dodgers would be in the mix too. No? – Lawton
I think no. They really needed to add some pieces for the back end of their rotation badly… and they were not able to because of the McCourt divorce.. and there is no end in sight there. So I can;t see them being overly competitive this year. The Giants will outpitch them in every game this season… and the Rockies (as you and I have agreed) are the best in the NL at this point. I can’t see the Dodgers competing this year.
DOB, I want to thank you for your great reports this spring. It’s really nice getting Braves news as it happens. Enjoy today’s (hopefully quick) game and have a safe flight home. I’m stopping at the Ted on my way home from work today to pick up my opening day tickets – life is good!
The Dodgers were the best team in the NL in the regular season last year…I don’t see them dropping off to the point where they’re not contenders. Their rotation isn’t one of the best in the NL, but they have a great bullpen and a good, deep lineup. I hope they’re in a dogfight with the Rockies, D-Backs, and Giants out west. That way the Braves can grab the wild card.
Brian from SC ..What SI Cover you have?….I got my yesterday with Roy Halladay in the Cover. Looking for some one that want to trade with me.
Hey Gil, about that cover. All 6 covers have Hallady on the front, the only difference is that little pic in the top right corner is of a different guy depending on your region. I’m sure the content inside is the same. I’ll probably get mine in the mail today and it will be the ATL region one, I’ll let you know if there is a feature on McCann or the Braves but I sort of doubt the content inside is any different than what you got.

Interesting lineup with McCann 4th followed by Glaus, Heyward at the 6 spot then Yunel 7th. Not that it matters, but I like it. – Lawton
I think we are going to see today’s lineup vs. RHPs and vs LHPs we’ll see 4. Glaus 5. Mac 6. Yunel 7. H.eyward

Brian, actually I think the Braves offense could be just as potent this year, especially considering how much more bench depth we have.

No?

The Cards have that great 1,2 punch in the rotation and lineup that will take them far, but other than that do they have much?

I personally think everyone is ranking the Rockies are a little higher on people’s list then they should be. I think the Braves have gotten some key pieces to the puzzle this offseason and if Chipper has a good year the Braves are golden I wanna see em send Bobby out on top
