Javy was Maddux-like last year. EVERY start he seemed to be on his game and the man could bunt with the best of ‘em. I wish he was still here, for sure.
And If Huddy wins 16 or 20 (he has before)I say it will be an upgrade
what he wins will depend on his run support. last year Javi got very little or would have won 18-20.
I’m not picking on Huddy at all. I like him and was saying that they needed to sign him to an extension if he seemed healthy all last season.
AdirondackDave you are not of a bargain shopper are you. I dont know how it is in Atlanta but in St. Louis you can get packages for good seats and there is a huge discount. Hell, bleacher seats may not be comfortable but in St. Louis they are $18ish(dont know what they are this year) and close to the field and right in homerun territory.
But anyway, you’d think the recent 4th quarter meltdowns would have something to do with the overworked starters. Woody even said he learned his lesson back in February, but sure enough….he kept giving the starters 40+ minutes and we kept blowing 4th quarter leads
No, I went in to accept it right now and saw Street’s yellow card thingy and changed my mind. I think I’ll be okay without Marteeeeeen. I don’t want to jinx him anyway.
Find a taker (sucker) for Lowe’s contract, replace him in the rotation with Kris Medlin, and use all that money toward Carl Crawford when he becomes a free agent !
What Lowe did in the past is exactly that – in the PAST ! That sinker ball ain’t sinking anymore folks ! Wake up and smell the roses ! — Branch Rickey
Well, in that case it shouldn’t be any problem finding a taker for his contract, Mr. Rickey.
(Eric from MO: I had written this at 9:38, the moved it to the right blog after realizing the commenter I was responding to had posted it on another blog. Now I moved it back here after seeing your comment. Sorry about that.)
Branch Rickey sounds like one of those guys last year saying “I don’t see why they don’t trade KJ, Norton and a prospect for Andre Ethier and a good bullpen arm; the Dodgers could use some bench help.”
DOB what does Thurston have to do to prove that he is better in the clutch than Conrad? Thurston has more MLB experience, has been driving in runs during ST, has hit for a higher average, etc. The only thing I can see that Conrad has over Thurston is that Conrad is already on the 40 man. If the Braves are really serious about taking the 25 best players to Atlanta then Thurston is your man.
TexasBrave it really doesnt matter that much does it? Neither one will play that much and neither one is a big offensive threat off the bench. Its not worth getting worked up over

TexasBrave Did you go to ST this year and actually watch Conrad and Thurston play? I did and I can assure you that Conrad outplayed him defensively and offensively, in addition to already being on the 40 man. Thurston is a statue in the field.

Jeremy, do you mean start the season with Conrad AND Thurston? Your comment says “OR”, but it seems like you’re talking about keeping both of them on, and having a 6 man bullpen?
kinda weird about Thurston last season. He hit poorly in high and in low leverage situations, and pretty good in medium leverage ones. 2 outs RISP was 256 and everything else clutch was worse to much worse. course Conrad was 0-23 when he came back up. Truth is that neither one has ever shown that they can hit worth a hill of beans in the bigs.
Conrad has made some nice plays this spring but his fielding over his career has always been considered a bit below average. Thurston ain’t too great either but at least in the minors he shows as a bit more range 4.99 to 4.7m @ second base.
Thurston can play short and has more MLB time. Since they opened so many spots on the 40 man I won’t be too surprised whichever way it turns out.
And what was that Dizzy said, after piching a one hitter the first game of a double header before his brother Paul pitched a no-hitter the second game? “Heck, If I’da known he was gonna pitch one I would’a piched one too”.
Isn’t the last bench spot mostly a pinch hitter? How often will they get playing time in the field? Not so often, I would think. (Norton certainly did not make it to the field much.) If so, then it seems like we should go with the better bat.
OBP mostly I guess and he hit 228 last year witch stinks no matter how many homers you hit. His fielding, especially the last two years has been below average, and though he hit 30 dingers one year the rest have been 20 or less.
a funny Twitter post while ago from Sportsminute: The Yankees signed ambidextrous pitcher Pat Venditte. Good thing the Mets didn’t sign him or he’d have to injure both hands.
nolie, I agree. I would probably go with their respective histories in the majors. As you have said, neither is terribly impressive. But we will have a several other pinch hitters before we get to them–Hinske (or whomever he is spelling), Infante (or whomever he is spelling), Ross (or McCann), the 4th outfielder of the evening. It is not a position that will get much play. If he does, then it means that we have multiple players going day-to-day. Not a situation in which any team will do well.

As you’ve both commented before: If the team is in a position where they’re having to rely on someone regularly that far down the bench, something has gone awfully wrong.
As you’ve both commented before: If the team is in a position where they’re having to rely on someone regularly that far down the bench, something has gone awfully wrong
Yeah, but neither will be all that far down the bench. Infante, Escobar, Chipper, and Glaus have all had injury issues the last few years. Prado was basically Infante’s backup in the utility role the last two years, and ended up getting plenty of burn. So much burn in fact that he ended up taking the second base job from both KJ and Infante. We even had to see more of Diory last year than one would prefer. Nick Green had to hold down the fort one year when Giles was hurt. We certainly saw too much of Orr when he was here. Worrying about the 25th man is silly until you inevitably have to see him out there for 2 weeks to a month.
Braveheart, I understand what you are saying. However, Diory was a call up. When we saw Conrad last year, he was. You are talking about having to DL someone. As the Braves go, so do I. I was surprised how quick Prado went off the board, Jurrgens was real early, and Lowe towards the later rounds. McLouth went around 110, and Melky didn’t get drafter at all.
What was the question? Your squad looks pretty good. The only obvious issue I see is that Berkman just went on the DL. Luckily, Garrett Jones qualifies at 1B , so you’ll need to slot him there for a couple weeks at least.

As the Braves go, so do I. I was surprised how quick Prado went off the board, Jurrgens was real early, and Lowe towards the later rounds. McLouth went around 110, and Melky didn’t get drafter at all.

Fantasy question…12 team mixed league… Braves AC
What was the question? Your squad looks pretty good. The only obvious issue I see is that Berkman just went on the DL. Luckily, Garrett Jones qualifies at 1B , so you’ll need to slot him there for a couple weeks at least.

Jay212033–Yep. It looks like the Tigers in Lakeland at 1:05 Eastern Time. I might catch the beginning of the game. I think I had a great-grandparent from Lakeland.

RG–Do you have a class tomorrow? I’m teaching a late afternoon class but not yet prepared for it. I have finished the reading but have no notes for teaching the material.

I’d put up a picture of my feet, but unfortunately it would be easy to identify me from them. Odd number of toes and all.
Sorry, what was the topic?
