On Manny… I just hope “Good” Manny doesn’t show up when pitching against the Braves and “Bad” Manny against the Phils. He sure had a Jekyle and Hyde personality when he got into games. You just never knew before hand which one was going to be manifested.

Good to see Manny Acosta gone from the Braves to the Mets. Can’t wait for him to start giving up homers to his former mates.

Guy really does have a nice arm, just very inconsistent like Jeff Bennett and Blaine Boyer. For a team like the Mets with no clue what they are doing with their bullpen, it probably is a good pick up.

Evening gang…

Turn back the clock day on the ol Braves/MIB blog, saw a lot of names on some reminiscing posts that brought back some chuckles. If I remember correctly, CL and Eric the Elder were the first to welcome me to these parts, but I enjoyed conversations with a bunch of folks like the Klobber and the Scribe over the years. Great folks.

And congratulations to the resident artist on getting the featured artist designation on a MIB video tribute to the one and only. Lew is very deserving of that.

Braves triumph over Fort Knox the Bronx and it seems Manny Acosta will be the latest former Brave heading out the 7 train to Flushing. He’s always had great stuff at times, but also looked rather hittable, especially so this spring.

At this point, I like Joe Thurston’s body of work this spring a little more than Brooks Conrad’s body of work. Right now, the team is just playing out the string at Dark Star before heading northward where a relatively svelte Andruw Jones awaits. Could be an entertaining weekend in the ATL to be sure with one backup position battle and a bullpen spot yet to be decided.

Daniel: No, I don’t think you’re necessarily missing anything with The Big To-Do. It’s a typical DBT album, if you ask me. And if you’re love the band, you probably love the album. It’s certainly nothing groundbreaking, no stretching out and trying new things, etc. Just another strong record from one of the best bands going.

I gotta tell you — and anyone else — if you like titanic, smart rock meant to be played real loud, try the new album by the Jersey band Titus Andronicus. It’s called The Monitor, and it’s as good or better than the band’s momentous debut LP The Airing of Grievances from a couple years back.

This one is a concept album based on — get this — the Civil War. No, really. And it works. Brilliantly.

I saw this band at The Earl and couldn’t believe they’re not huge by now. But they might be too good to be huge.

Everyone here who likes smart, loud, rock, give a listen. Sort of like The Hold Steady and The Gaslight Anthem, but a little angrier than either.

Here’s a cut from the new album (don’t worry, there’s a 20-second intro that’s from a speech. The music cranks soon… and I mean cranks.)

Have you talked to Schafer recently? Any improvement on the wrist? Did they say how long until he’s hitting live pitching or if he’ll be ready for AAA season opener? — BravePack

Just so happens I talked to Schafer this morning. He took BP today on field, hit for fourth consecutive day — but that’s coaches pitching. Still hasn’t faced a real pitcher, but getting close. No timetable for return, but mid- to late-April at Gwinnett seems possible.

Schafer told me, “It’s taking a long time, but it’s getting better, so…. As long as it’s getting better, not staying the same or getting worse….

“Soon as I get healthy, it’s not going to take long [to get back to playing]. I’ve done enough stuff and seen enough pitches, bunted enough at high speeds, it’s not going to take long to get going. It’s just a matter of getting to the point where I can get in there and swing every day.”

Have you talked to any of the players about this weird early season schedule that has them on the West Coast on the 5th day of the new season? Its hard to follow your southern teams. Most of the time they are the smaller market. People who aren’t huge fans of baseball or people just coming to like baseball will follow the teams who can spend the big bucks. I met quite a few people who never really followed baseball before last year who acted like the worlds biggest yankee fans.

And to top that off, I live in Northwest Florida which is a big Saints/Dolphins area. You wouldn’t believe the amount of people who have acted like saints fans this year. I’ve heard enough ‘Who Dat’ to last me a lifetime.

I’m not in line with the cracking on Acosta. He did post a 3.55 ERA in 103 games with the Braves. There were stretches in 2008 when the bullpen was really banged up and he went out there day after day giving it his best shot. He wasn’t “automatic” by any stretch and there were a few painful blown saves, but he was put in some tough situations and got the job done more times than not. I’m not saying he should be on the 2010 squad, but I don’t think the exagerrated criticisms are warranted.
